Second, one of the things I love most about Dimitri is how self aware he is of his privilege as a prince (or king) and how seriously he treats the gravity of his position. He has a strong sense of duty and wants to be a good leader who listens to and provides for the needs of all of his people. This includes the citizens of Duscur, who were nearly wiped out by his own countrymen in (mistaken) retaliation for his father's murder. His commitment to righting this wrong is one of his primary goals in life.

Third, while he is more than capable of crushing a man's skull with his bare hands, under normal circumstances he absolutely wouldn't. A large part of the reason why his fall is so shocking and devastating to witness is because by the time he snaps, we know that Dimitri is actually a kind and gentle soul who hates violence and understands that even his enemies are human. Even at his worst point he still recognizes this, which feeds into his extreme self loathing. He extends compassion and forgiveness to others but struggles mightily to allow himself any forbearance for his own mistakes. He's kind quite literally to a fault, as his empathy is both his greatest strength AND his biggest flaw and I find that as heartwarming as it is heartbreaking."

Chapter 6 of a secrets worth from Jim's POV?

That chapter lives in my head rent free. It's literally one of my faves to go back and reread.

Jim was still laughing, all of them were, as they walked out of the dark theater into the bright lobby. He really shouldn’t make a hobby of theater hopping, for a lot of reasons, but he was really happy they’d done it today.

“Glad you decided to stay later this time,”

He started and glanced over in confusion.

Toby grinned up at him “Dr. Lake probably won’t be too mad at you for breaking curfew, just make her some of your famous spinach puffs and she’ll get over it,”

Jim stopped completely to turn and look at Toby directly “What are you talking about? It’s only three, I’ll be home in plenty of time,”

By now their whole group had stopped, the girls all turning their heads to silently watch his and Toby’s conversation.

Toby raised an eyebrow at him “No dude, it’s four thirty,”

The beginnings of something uncomfortable squirming in his guts, Jim slowly pulled out his phone “It can’t be that la-”

Jim froze, heart seizing up middbeat, staring down at his phone, brain refusing to accept what his eyes were seeing.

4:27pm.

He blinked, hoping desperately it was a trick of his mind and that after a few moments of staring it would go away and he’d see the real time.

It didn’t, the glowing numbers remained static, showing that the time was indeed four twenty seven pm.

He couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe, an icy chill spreading out across his whole body and a roaring sound in his ears–

Suddenly there was a hand on his shoulder “Don’t worry, I’ve broken curfew a few times, your mom might be mad but it’s n--”

The touch and the voice snapped him out of his paralyzed trance.

He had less than fifteen minutes until he changed. 

He needed to get out of here now.

Sprinting away from the group, he rushed out the doors and made a beeline for his bike. Frantically trying to tear it free from the rack with badly shaking hands.

Had to go get out now before anyone sees–

“Hey, where’s the fire?”

Hearing Darci’s voice, seeing the four of them walking up out of the corner of his eye, Toby’s face pinched and strained, made his already pounding heartbeat ratchet up tenfold.

He couldn’t let anyone see, he couldn’t let them see. Getting hunted down and dragged away was bad enough, but to have his friends see him like that. To watch their eyes widen and faces twist up in horror as they saw the monster he really was –

Jim didn’t think he could take that, ever.

Despite his trembling fingers he finally managed to undo his bike lock and pull it free “Sorry but I really need to leave right now,”

He didn’t stick around to listen to Mary’s shout of alarm, in too much of a rush to even put on his helmet. His mom’s lectures about bike safety drowned out by the frantic drumming of his heart.

There was only fifteen minutes left until he transformed. Less now since it had been a while since he’d looked at the clock. It was ten minutes from the theater to his house by bike…

This was going to be close, so close, if he slowed down by so much as a second it would be game over.

Jim was so singularly focused on peddling his bike as fast as possible he was nearly to his cul de sac before he noticed–

The others were following him on their own bikes.

His already pounding heart shot straight up into his throat but he didn’t dare slow down. Too keyed up to even feel relieved when he pulled up to his house. Ditching his bike on the lawn and sprinting towards the front door. 

Ripping it open, Jim darted inside and slammed it behind him without slowing down for a second. A creak of the floorboards had him glancing to the right to see his mom was right there in the living room, sitting on the couch with her phone in a death grip, expression gaunt and skin chalky. As soon as she spotted him equal measures of relief and anxiety washed over her face as she stood and stepped towards him.

“There you are, Jim what–”

Both of them jumped as a pounding sounded just on the other side of the front door.

Jim stared at it in horror, insides twisting in on themselves, then a second round of pounding noises had him racing into the kitchen and ducking behind the counter.

He was in his own house, his own home with his mom right there. But he couldn’t calm down, the booming in his chest and ears and jittery energy all over his body refusing to dissipate.

He was faintly aware of soft noises echoing in from the front room, his mom trying to shoo Toby and the others away, making the pressure in his chest ten times worse.

What did they think of him? Running off like this? Acting like a crazy pers–

Jim jerked and swallowed a gasp as the change washed over him. The roaring in his ears was now ten times louder, and his clothes had to be at least twenty times tighter and it was not comfortable at all.

As unpleasant as it was, the sensation of his too tight clothes straining and pinching into him did help ground him somewhat. He was still freaking out, but he was a lot more present in the here and now than he had been ten seconds ago.

A slam of a door, click of a lock, rapid footsteps and then his mom was walking into the kitchen. She leaned heavily into the counter across from him. Her entire body rocked by deep, shuddering breaths.

After what had to be a solid minute she finally turned towards him.

“What were you thinking? I must have called you over a dozen times!” 

Hearing her desperate tone a wave of guilt rose up alongside the existing panic inside him “I…I’m sorry, the others wanted to sneak into another movie, and I lost track of time, and my phone was off–”

Barbara sagged against the counter, as if just standing upright took all the strength she had.

“Jim I’m glad you’re going out and having fun with your friends, but you can’t just let yourself get careless like this. If you want to be independent you need to manage your time better,”

“I– I’m sorry,” despite his new size his voice was small “I just– I didn’t think–”

“Do you have any idea how close you were cutting it!”

Jim jerked back in surprise, shirt ripping from the sudden motion. He couldn’t remember his mom sounding that scared, ever. He didn’t know how to respond.

And based on the look on her face, neither did she.

“Oh sweetie I’m sorry…” Barbara glanced down, seeming to notice his tattered clothes for the first time “Stay here, I’ll get the scissors,”

He managed a nod in response, slowly getting to his feet while his mom pulled the scissors out of the pencil jar.

Despite the panic, shock, and guilt still coursing through him, there was still a part of him that rankled at the idea of his mom helping him undress like a little kid. But his clothes were beyond ruined, and there was no way he could get out of them on his own.

Barbara stepped up to him, scissors in hand, and Jim held out an arm in permission.

There would be repercussions from today. There was no way he could run out on his friends like a crazy person without any consequences.

But he was home, he was safe, his secret was safe. Whatever fallout would come he would take it. However bad it was going to be, Jim knew today could have ended far far worse.

His mom looked up to him, the pain in her gaze saying more than words ever could, then slid the scissors under his sleeve and snipped.

Guess what? I just reread Pride and Prejudice from cover to cover for the first time in years.

I wanted to answer the character asks I was sent about Elizabeth and Darcy with the characters as fresh in my mind as possible, so instead of just skimming the book for favorite quotes, I gave it a full reread.

Before I answer those character asks, here are some general opinions of what stood out to me.

I can safely say that this book isn't a "problematic fave," at least not where Elizabeth and Darcy's romance is concerned. I never thought it was, but now I know it isn't. I'm sure you've all heard me say that while I love Disney's Beauty and the Beast, I think it's a problematic fave because it does portray a raging, selfish bully as someone who can change into an ideal love interest. But not so Pride and Prejudice. Darcy is cold, stern, and sometimes rude in the first half of the book, but he's never, ever a bully. Almost all of his verbal "battles" with Elizabeth are outwardly polite on both sides (their only really angry argument is after his first marriage proposal), which helps this book to appeal even to people who don't usually like the "bickering leads to love" trope. Nor does he change to please Elizabeth: his off-page character development takes place when he never expects to see her again. Nor is he necessarily more flawed or more changed in the end than Elizabeth herself. I'm not entirely sure why this story is known as the quintessential "woman changes man" romance when their character development is so clearly mutual.

Elizabeth is not, in any way, shape, or form, a Mary Sue. Why some people call her that is beyond me! If they read only the first half of the book, I could understand it: if you don't know the ending, the first half does read as "Most of these characters are jerks, idiots, or sweet but all too naïve, and witty, perceptive Elizabeth cleverly judges and mocks them all." But the second half deconstructs this viewpoint, as Elizabeth realizes that she hasn't been much wiser than anyone else and that her vanity has clouded her judgments. It's ironic that in a book about the unreliability of first impressions (even the original title was First Impressions), the first impression of the heroine is all that some people remember.

When I first read the book, I thought only Mrs. Bennet was the bad parent in the Bennet family, and that Mr. Bennet was the good parent with his humor, his perceptiveness about his wife and younger daughters' silliness, and his love for Elizabeth. But now I can see the mean-spiritedness in the way Mr. Bennet judges and teases his wife and younger daughters, the fact that he prefers to laugh at the younger girls' follies instead of giving them any real guidance, and the fact that he carelessly spent his fortune instead of saving to provide for his family after his death. But again, I think this ties into the theme of deceiving first impressions: in the first half, we're set up to view him as the likable, sensible parent in contrast to his wife. It's only after Elizabeth confronts her own flaws (which are similar her father's and clearly influenced by him) that she's forced to fully acknowledge her father's flaws too. This is no defense of Mrs. Bennet, though. It's valid for her to be anxious to see her daughters all married before they lose Longbourn and its income, but she's still an obnoxious, silly person who only makes their prospects of marriage worse. They're both bad parents in different ways.

When I started my reread, I was especially curious to see if I would agree or not with one specific complaint I've sometimes heard: namely that Austen shows "internalized misogyny" by portraying so many of the female characters other than Elizabeth and Jane as silly, snobbish, and/or gold diggers. My answer? No, I don't think it's internalized misogyny. The male characters are no better; they include an equal share of snobs, fools, and boors (plus one rake). The women just stand out because there happen to be more female characters than male. I think Austen was mocking people in general, not specifically mocking women.

40 Day Anime Challenge 2023 Edition - Day 7: Character you want to marry

My boy.... my love.... my first anime love.... 😍

ZERO KIRYUUUUUUU!!!! (Vampire Knight)

The closest thing to an "angsty boi" I will ever go feral over. While most of my faves have some sort of chip on their shoulder, some sort of angsty backstory, 9 times out of 10 they hide it behind either Tsundere attitudes or sarcastic humor.

While Zero isn't an open book, he also doesn't bother with facades. To quote the great Mr. Darcy, "disguise of every sort is [his] abhorrence," which is probably a HUGE reason why he hates Kaname Kuran so much, who always has an ace up his sleeve. Zero does mellow out as the series goes on, naturally, but his angsty honest core remains true.

Underneath his hatred and desire for revenge against all vampires is a burning desire to protect the ones he loves. Not only is this shown with Yuki, but his bond with his twin, Ichiru, and the tragedy of their estrangement (to put it nicely lol).

He's gentle and kind towards animals and children, socially awkward among his peers and rude to his superiors (at best lol), and self-sacrificing if it means doing the right thing (aaaaand possibly with the thought of ending his own misery, but that's mostly in the beginning of the story ^^")

Plus, and let's be honest here, THE GUY IS HOTTER THAN SIN HOLYYYYYYY SHIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTT 😍😍😍😍😍

Tomoya Okazaki (Clannad & Clannad: After Story)

As much as the fangirl in me would always choose Zero, realistically, Tomoya would be the most LIKELY choice I would fall for in real life. Because this guy is basically my fiance.

Winx Club - Controversy meme

Favourite character: Darcy

Since the first season I always found her character interesting. First her look, most of the time a character with pants in Winx is a tomboy or a casual/active/sporty one while for Darcy it's very feminine and vintage. Her color scheme too. Then her contradictions, between having some feelings for Riven ( she's clearly shown as jealous toward Musa) and her original goal & attitude. She's not the total evil one like Icy or Stormy who at first live for chaos and power, she seems to be a bit more shy and nice. I'd really like to know more about her backstory.

Least fav character: Flora

World of Winx made me tolerating her a bit more but ... Ugh. She's way too sweet and boring. People tend to see her as a talented fairy, yet the fact she limits herself to vines and petals while she's called "fairy of nature" screams laziness and lack of talent for me. Flora is supposed to be the most powerful fairy after Bloom but still sucks in fights, and isn't that good for the rest. Adding to that she's insecure at a very annoying level.

Favourite villain: The Trix

In season 1 only. After that it's only by default. They were relentless, good strategists, able to made a whole dimension bow in front of them. While being only three ( eh, they summon the things, it depended on their energy, even Faragonda said it, Riven was a bit useless, just like Knut and the duck). They were only senior students at Cloud Tower, not a 100 years old demon like Valtor or Darkar.

Least fav villain: Kalshara & Brafilius

Was that duet meant to be a joke ? She looked cool at the start but after...

Most overrated: Bloom and Flora

I already said what I was thinking about Flora. Now Bloom.

Bloom was one of my fave characters in season 1. Determined, curious, willing to discover and learn, a good friend ( the fact she was ready to fight the three others just because she promised to help Flora for her exam in the swamp episode), just a normal person trying to fit in a very different place. She was also very brave and willing to help people in need WITHOUT looking like she's doing it for the camera. Her relationship with Sky wasn't my fave part, I always thought she'll have to apologize to Diaspro for that stupid fight, and be able to move one, with or without Sky. Unlike lot of people I sort of understand her running away to go home, when people are sad or live something like being humiliated in front of two or three whole schools and officials, the event being probably even broadcasted live in Magix too, after being sure that it was the witch who physically assault you since you're in that dimension. Heartbroken, lost, with weird dreams, far away from the only people she grew up with and who can't even come to help, realizing the guy she was seeing as a friend and potential love interest lied to her, and now humiliated in front of everyone... I think it's a valid reason when being a 16 years old to have a breakdown.

But Bloom in season 5, 6, 7 or 8? Please stop. Obnoxious, bossy, childish, insecure, cry baby and attention whore. What happened to the original Bloom ? Oh yeah, she get everything she dreamed of and now can't tolerate any obstacle.

Most underrated: Headmistress Griffin

I mean... She's an icon. I love her bickering with Faragonda, just like old friends. She's the healthy type of witch we should see more in the serie, the one who doesn't need to turn into a fairy to be good.

Plus, let me remind you that right after being freed from her prison she directly fought the Trix all by herself to allow the others to escape. She was a real threat for the Trix, it's the main reason why they imprison her instead of trying to eliminate her properly, better deal with her when having more powers and spells.

Also she's a total troll, fully enjoying the mess did by the Trix during the party in the start of the second movie. Just relatable. The only reason she's not in the "Favourite character" slot is that we don't have enough screentime for her compared to Darcy but it was very hard to pick only one.

Favourite season: Season 1

A classic. With an actual plot who was still enjoyable, nothing better than someone discovering a magical world and themselves. It gave me Harry Potter 1 feels and I live for that.

Plus they had personalities back then.

Least fav season: Season 7

Gosh it was boring!

And making a whole season related to animals while treating Roxy like that... Worst villains, worst transformation, worst season. Even season 6 seems enjoyable compared to that.

Favourite fairy form: magic/basic

No I won't call it "magic winx". Not every fairy is a winx, and there's tons of fairies having it before them. I think in the GBA games they called it pixie magic and it's way cuter.

Simple and efficient, I really like the fact they seemed more powerful in that form that in any other one. Just... Bloom breaking the ice and releasing that huge dragon. Did she ever do that again ? Nah. It was smaller and less powerful. A true shame she never used it again. Same for Musa's flute, Stella's scepter who mysteriously vanished while being a Solarian treasure.

Least fav fairy form: butterflix

Was that a contest of how they could make this season even worst than any other one..? If yes, I can confirm it's a success.

Favourite episode: S1 ep9 Betrayed

This episode has everything:

friendship drama ( Stella is a bitch, borderline bully)

teenage love drama

girl fight ( a simple slap but still lol)

prissy daddy's boy VS angry emo "I'm not like the other guys" teen

A real freaking street fight

Least fav episode: S3 ep18 Valtor's box

While this one is the start of one of my least fave couples: Aisha x Nabu. So you're gonna tell me they made Aisha a courageous and independent woman, who knows what she is willing to accept and all you can offer to her is a creep who stalk her, disrespect her and keep pushing her until she gave up to what he wants. This character and their relationship is poorly written. Aisha deserved better than ending with a creep chosen by her father, it's almost like if the wanted us to see forced marriages like a good thing. Stella's attitude was also disgusting, she could understand the situation Aisha was going through and just support her, encourage her to solve the problem instead of saying she could ask a guy what he thinks about it. Making someone uncomfortable seems to be her favourite hobby, it was already the case in season 1 with Musa, except she wasn't supposed to keep acting like that years after. That and the hideous rain outfits looking like a rainbow vomit when they finally had the occasion to make something less bright.

Favourite couple: ( non canon) Griselda x Wizgiz

That's the type of interactions I want to see, not boring love at the first sight teens.

Least fav couple: Bloom x Sky

Where should I start ? Like everything with Bloom, it was good in season 1. But it became boring with the time. They're supposed to be engaged for a time now, and yet Sky's father still acting like if Bloom wasn't the hero of their dimension and a princess more powerful than him. That and Diaspro always in the middle, Sky unable to finally tell everyone to shut up, Bloom always crying but not ending this fail of a relationship... Gosh.

Just stop with them. Even Riven would be a better choice for her at this point.

Favourite sidekicks: Nereus & Tritannus

Do they count ? I take the lot.

Least fav sidekicks: the pixies

People will say that the selkies are worst BUT while the selkies can't bother you when you're not in the sea, these damn pixies will follow you everywhere. Between Scylla and Charybdis, I choose the less present one.

William Laurence

I headcanon him as a sex-favorable to sex-neutral ace, very much biromantic, and this is the hill I will die on, please and thank you.

I honestly am fine with pretty much every paring and triad here? Of course Tharkay, Granby, Roland and Bonaparte would be at the top of the list, but like... literally any human. Even crossover humans. A Elizabeth/Darcy/Laurence story would make my day xD

...I kind of like the idea of Laurence/Hammond too, because Hammond always looks kind of awestruck and I think it's cute. Plus he was Laurence's second that one time :3

... though Temeraire and Churki would definitely come to blows over who gets to consider the humans as theirs in that ship... so maybe not 😂

Temeraire, of course, who else? I mean, human&dragon friendship is pretty much always awesome, but I adore the open love they show each other, the way they feel like an inevitability. These are Temeraire's formative years, and it's plain to see how he'll cherish them in the future, even with the hardships.

Any dragon. Just... purely on the logistics alone, I can't wrap my head around it. Though I do believe that some human somewhere, sometime has indeed tried 😳

He was an ensign on the Surprise with this universe's equivalent of Jack Aubrey. They both pretend to hate each other but deep down they are friends.

Laurence pretends to lose bets to give Aubrey money without it seeming like charity, and Aubrey was the first to welcome him back to England after League of Dragons by shaking him and making him promise he's never doing another fool thing again, I swear to God, Will, since when am I the responsible one??

He would definitely see himself as a problematic fave, on account on all the disobeying orders and being an aviator and all. But since pretty much the rest of the characters see him as a (very uptight) cinnamon roll, he's outvoted.

Heartstopper s2 thoughts (SPOILERS AHOY)

Full disclosure: I write this as a longtime reader of the comic, though I am not caught up with the latest volume's online posts. Also, I borderline didn't want to watch this because I REALLY REALLY STRENUOUSLY object to what Alice Oseman has said about BL in the past. But I watched anyway and it is what it is.

The third season order clearly makes itself felt throughout the whole season, but eventually you realize that they've written the second and third seasons to be continuous, in some ways. There's almost no resolution to the smaller side stories in season 2.

The main throughline is Nick's coming out, with the secondary line of everyone knowing about him and Charlie.

The second major throughline is probably Elle and Tao getting together and it was done beautifully. Will Gao and Yasmin Finney did a fine job of playing friend or not friend as a trope. And the characters are so cute together.

Is the third throughline maybe Isaac's journey? We don't get a resolution to that one though, so it may be more of an unfinished side storyline carrying over to season 3.

Sahar, Naomi and Felix have almost nothing to do during the season, which was not unexpected but felt a little sad, because the roles are cast brilliantly. The nice thing about the new characters is they continue to bring in all sorts of diverse bodies and viewpoints and the not-nice thing is that we barely see them; on the other hand, they're clearly NOT THERE just for diversity's sake, because that stuff isn't even a plot point. They're kids that the group knows/meets and who slot right into their friend group and it's nice.

I was...surprised by how melancholy the last few episodes felt, even though I know the story and know that stuff is there in print.

I was also surprised by how...affected I was by the eating disorder stuff. I think it has more...impact as video than it does in the books.

Likewise the Darcy storyline. I think if you use the measure of how much I talk to the screen to understand how I feel about things, I talked most to Darcy these 8 episodes. It's hard not to feel for her. Everyone has their things, but hooooo, Darcy.

The music is so good, just like it was in the first season. I'll tell you, when I recognized Taylor Swift's 'Seven' in the last episode, I nearly died from happiness. It's one of my fave TS songs, and it's just beautiful in real life and it's beautiful in the show and siiiiigh of happiness.

Boy did Kit get huge. I mean, muscles. His muscles. Got huge. Is that to make Joe look smaller or? Shit man. Huge.

Do you mean in real life? Because that’s classified. Also, not really. That kind of insanity only exists in fiction.

Fictionally though…I can think of many. I think that’s why my affection for dair is so enduring, it ticks so many of my ship boxes for me, so let’s dive in, on a tour of liz’s fave romantic ships

Let’s start with the classics.

The original romcom couple: beatrice x benedick of shakespeare’s much ado about nothing. They have everything: eviscerating banter, guy being an absolute simp for his beloved. Nads has written about it before.

And of course, the austenites: Darcy x Lizzie and Knightley x Emma are big ones, and I think there’s definite vibes with Wentworth x Anne too.

the Blueprints are When Harry Met Sally and Summer x Seth (and tbh you could probs throw Holly Golightly and Paul Varjak and Tracy Lord and Mike Connor — I would have picked jimmy stewart tbh. rip to katharine hepburn but I’m different. )

Sidebar: Oh but you know who knows SO much about Philadelphia Story and all romcomedy bc they’ve written academically on the subject? tumblr user scabopolis!—somewhere, mayhaps a fic comment?—they told me that that script was written with the intention of the ending being punitive for the heroine. if hepburn and the writer weren’t combating early 20th century misogyny, would the play and subsequent film come to a different conclusion???

Mutual blueprints (Poppy x Alex have a best friends to lovers that is DELICIOUS but the characters themselves aren’t that similar to dan and blair on that level)

Speaking of mutual blueprints, the mindy project’s mindy x danny have a GREAT workplace enemies to lovers arc in the first couple seasons…the second half of the show roughens them up a bit. (and danny castellano is SUCH a different daniel than our girl dan humphrey)

And in the realm of “stop being so mean to me or I swear to god I’m gonna fall in love with you” allow me to talk a bit about one of my favorite ships of all time: luke and mara jade skywalker.

Okay so, in the extended star wars universe; in the novels that were written BEFORE the new trilogy (and before the prequel trilogy in some cases), these published fanfic pulp scifi books introduced this character, mara jade. She was the personal assassin and fixer for the emperor, and when he was killed, she was like “I have to get revenge” so of course she makes it her life mission to destory luke skywalker. And then of course they get thrown into a few impossible situations where they have to team up and she discovers that actually she doesn’t hate him which of course makes her furious, and then after a couple more teamups she realizes she likes him, how horrifying, then after luke convinces mara to train as a jedi in between smuggling deals she realizes she’s in LOVE with him?! while luke has been down bad since the first assassination attempt they are literally those posts that go “she thinks they’re sworn enemies but he is just some guy with a crush on her” and “she stops trying to kill him and honestly he’s a little disappointed. star wars sequels committed many sins but the original one was cutting out my girl mara jade skywalker.

I have discussed at length with S (and even written fic) on the dair-codedness of amy and jonah from superstore.

Speaking of S, she also made me watch Hart of Dixie and whilst the main couple zoe x wade have a chaotic adversarial romance that may speak to dair, the true dair of the show, the couple that came late in the game, but looking back seems like they should have belonged together all this time (I caught Vibes in s2 but that’s neither here nor there): ANNABETH X GEORGE! They have a long history of mutual disinterest/only tolerating each other for the sake of the mutual love of their life, Lemon, and then after a couple heartbreaks and a long winding road, they fall for each other! and Lemon is like the captain of their ship—it’s both Dair and the resolution the blair x serena x dan triangle deserved!

And in terms of childhood love vs the love you grow into have this whole fic verse that expands upon the dair & amy x laurie parallels

I’m laughing my ass off. This reminds me of when I was at a fannish party back in... 2012? 2013?

One of the hosts excitedly asked us if we were into MCU. I said yes, and she aggressively shoved her art portfolio at me. It was entirely manips of Stony. I loathe MCU Stony. I also don’t like manips, but it was really the ship that stuck with me. Because she didn’t ask if we liked Stony but whether we liked MCU.

Anyway, that’s a longwinded way of saying that while I was “in” MCU for a hot second, that doesn’t mean I was in that part of it.

I ignored Iron Man 1. I was too angry at how its unexpected success destroyed any chance my beloved Speed Racer had of breaking even. Speed Racer is one of the most aesthetically adventurous films of its decade and offensively underrated at the time. (Hilariously, all the film bro blogs changed their tune in like 6 months, years faster than I expected.) It’s one of the only films I’ve seen multiple times in the theater. (The others being The Man from U.N.C.L.E., which was similarly buried by another film, and Deadpool 2.)

A while later, I was looking up fanvids that use music from Highlander as part of making a vid to mess with a friend. She said any song can be used for anything except for that one because it belongs to Highlander. She was joking, but I thought it would be funny to use the song for something else... only I couldn’t remember which one she’d said, so I used both Princes of the Universe and Who Wants to Live Forever to make fun of all the emo Sherlock vids post S2.

I was shocked to discover that talitha78 actually had vidded Who Wants to Live Forever, and it was a really shippy vid of something I hadn’t seen and didn’t even recognize. So that’s how I watched Captain America: TFA. I have one great narrative weakness, and it’s people being fake or temporarily dead. Needless to say, when I found out what happened with Bucky in comics, I was very interested.

I got into MCU at that point, right before Avengers came out. I ate a lot of shawarma.

Avengers made me ship Science Bros like mad. Bruce was hands down my fave. I also read some Pepperony on LJ. I find MCU Tony insufferable, but I liked his vibe with both Pepper and Bruce. I also read some Tony/Pepper/other dude OT3s, even Tony/Pepper/Steve despite me thinking MCU Stony was intensely chemistryless at the time.

But honestly, the fic I probably read the most of was something I didn’t even ship myself: Clint/Coulson. I loved Coulson. I love characters coming back. And I’m weak for tropey handler/asset. C/C at the time was practically just original m/m with faces grafted on, and there were some great fics.

I also read a lot of trashy Mary Sue Darcy fic. That was everywhere in 2012. Darcy joins SHIELD. Darcy is Coulson’s secret child. Darcy dates Coulson. Darcy fucks her way through the Avengers. Darcy has a freaky blue baby with Loki. Darcy fucks Jensen from The Losers. (In fact, there is more Darcy/Jensen than a bunch of MCU ships that actually make sense.)

Then The Winter Soldier came out. I walked in a stucky shipper. I walked out thinking “Bucky who?” I was blown away by how that movie, like Cap1, is off in its own aesthetic universe. The whole film, I kept going “Oh my god, it’s Three Days of the Condor! Right down to the color palette!” Imagine my amusement to find out that the directors were calling it “Three Days of Captain America”. I was also blown away by Sam. The imperturbable friend who’s too sane to crumple under your bullshit! My weakness!

After that, I read a bunch of fic with Sam, Steve, Natasha, and Bucky in various configurations.

So, okay, yes, I did read some stucky. But even back then, I was seeing a rise in stucky-only fans whose work wasn’t so much my thing. There was a lot of lipservice to “historical accuracy” and fellating of anybody who’d read Gay New York and wanted to show off their learnings. I’ve read that book, and it’s great, but the attitude made me roll my eyes. In my experience, “historically accurate” just meant justifying some specific kink for femme Steve with Steve as a fairy and Bucky as trade. (More on what those referred to in this book review. Basically, femme vs. masculine guy who fucks women and femmes.)

I drifted away from MCU some time after that. I’m not good at staying into canons that are too sprawling or things that are too popular in general, especially if they’re very OTPy. (My stay in BTS fandom is shockingly long for me. I chalk it up to the sheer quantity of OT3s and multishipping.)

The big thing I noticed was that in addition to a lack of fic about Sam, a lot of what there was was distinctly boring. People were afraid to write iddy trash for obvious reasons. Not so with stucky, which has always been iddy trash central. Curse The Winter Soldier for robbing me of my ability to care!

I was excited about the idea of Bucky and Sam in a buddy show despite not having seen MCU in years, but friends’ reviews made me think it would be a letdown, and I haven’t bothered to watch.

I don’t know the big internal dramas in stucky fandom after I left MCU. I’m sure they have been legion. I get the impression that many of them have boiled down to “You are more popular than I am, and that is not okay.”

It’s such a large ship and has so many OTPers who don’t necessarily interact with other parts of MCU fandom that I don’t know how many of those dramas have leaked out elsewhere. MCU is like Harry Potter fandom in that way: there are tons of completely separate camps, and one might or might not be in multiple of them. It’s not even a question of disliking each other: it’s just too big to be in all of.

Given how overwhelming and hard to get into Stucky is at this point, I would just read the fic and not worry about interacting--unless you want to? TBH, ships like that aren’t that easy to get into in a social sense. I’ll still read the occasional fic if I get a rec. I read that one where they go to the Captain America film festival, and it’s a hilarious parody of gay French art films and subtextually homoerotic 1980s US action movies. I also read that one where Steve contacts a professor of queer history looking for info about his past friends and Bucky bugs her office. (I’m certainly not immune to the history nerdery. I just find it lulzy when people go “FACT!” and mean “I love femme Steve!”)

marius von hagen who is 21 years old in 2030 means that from the Important Media Ages (12-15) it was 2021-2024. good fucking lord, marius was born in 2009 and that makes him so young that his Important Media Ages arent even DONE HAPPENING IN OUR CURRENT TIMELINE, JESUS....

2021 is an interesting era of entertainment because it is getting steadily more and more apparent that corporate greed is trying to swallow up good storytelling; movies and shows are made as fast food products to be consumed immediately and thrown away just as fast. there are smarter posts and articles talking about this, but my point here is that marius "believes SO MUCH in art and art's capability to make a difference" von hagen would HATE THIS SO MUCH and, through spite, get into a lot of indie medias that dont necessarily sell. smaller movies, tv shows that got cancelled way before they should have.

oh, hey, MARIUS WAS 12 YEARS OLD IN 2021, yeah he could have watched The Owl House and threw a fucking FIT when disne/y nerfed the show's third season. he has not forgiven and he has not forgotten.

regardless of his age, marius, at some point in his teens watches Vincent and the Doctor (s5 e10 from Doctor Who). for those who dont know this episode, it involves Vincent Van Gogh and a bunch of sci-fi stuff but, at the end, a scene where Van Gogh is taken to the future and shown the impact his art has made on people. please watch it, if you havent it, it's very good and no words can do the experience justice.
