summary: the biggest goal of a grad student is to get through school in one piece - no petty drama involved, no sweating over the little things. however, that plan almost always never follows through. sometimes, you can’t help but fall into the most unthinkable, unexpected traps and learn the hard way. like, exhibit a: being unable to resist your engaged, substitute teacher, kim seokjin.
pairing: (2nd bts member to be revealed) x reader x engaged!teacher!seokjin
genre: grad school au, student life au | fluff, angst, smut (to come)
words: 4.2k
warnings: implied sexual content, cussing / mature language, relationship issues, angst, club scene, alcohol consumption, intoxication, seokjin is ready to risk it all cause reader is a huge flirt, the love triangle mess shall begin
notes: AH IM SORRY, THAT’S ALL I HAVE TO SAY?!? I TRIED to make this as fair as possible, but i..... clearly have an issue and just really wanted this to be messy lmao

"Waddup bro." Namjoon steps aside to let Jin in. "Wasn't expecting you to come by since we're seeing each other tonight." Jin chuckled.
"Fuck, that's right." Joon laughs as he hands Jin a bottle of water before sitting.
"What, you forgot? You planned this for your own stepbrother."
"No, I know. Just a lot of things going on." He sips on his water, manspreading in Namjoon's loveseat in the livingroom. He tilts his head back and closes his eyes, the headache he felt earlier this morning no longer as bad, but still lingered. After getting home last night, he had tried to push you out of his mind, but failed miserably. It didn't help that he really and genuinely tried to clear the air with Grace, only for her to push him off and sleep on the far end of their bed.
"You alright? What's going on? I feel like I haven't seen you this stressed in a really long time. Last time was probably when you were planning your proposal." Jin softly chuckles, his head still tilted back.
"Yeah, it's been quite the shit show lately."
"Can't be that bad, can it? Have you and Grace been fighting?"
"A tad."
"A tad? The way you're acting right now says it's much more than a tad."
"We've been distant. Busy. We don't do things together anymore." He shortens the shpeel cause quite frankly, he's tired of repeating the story even though he hasn't told many people.
"Why don't you guys talk about it?"
"We can't communicate properly. I try, she gets even more upset and blows me off."
"It's probably just a rough patch in your relationship. I'm sure if you just give each other enough space, you could figure out how to fix things and have a serious conversation about where you both are at and what you need from each other. Remind each other that you're a team, and not working against each other." Jin's slightly shot his head up, his eyebrow raised.
"That's actually pretty solid advice coming from you."
"Shut up, you need help right?" Joon laughs.
"You're right though, it's just been hard. I feel like we've been constantly pushing each other away."
"You two are stubborn."
"Yup, that too." Jin sipped his water.
"I know that's not the only thing on your mind." If it was anyone in Jin's circle, you could count on Namjoon to figure things out before you can even say anything to him. "It's a little hard to believe you came over here to tell me this." In which, he's right. Jin never really talked about his relationship problems, let alone did he go out of his way to tell his friends what was going on. It was more of a thing that naturally came up in conversation when they were all together.
"Don't know what you're talking about." Joon shakes his head.
"Who is she?" Jin watches Namjoon's curious eyes as he leans into the palm of his hand. He was trying to come up with excuses or find ways to see himself out of his conversation, but he couldn't. Namjoon was too smart for this. If it were Yoongi or Hoseok, maybe he could get away with it. The only thing that Jin can come up with is a stupid smirk before he shakes his head and breaks eye contact. "See."
"See what?"
"That smirk. You can't tell me I don't know that smirk. I've been there before, dude. Who is she?" He repeats, causing Jin to succumb to defeat.
"She's a grad student in my creative writing class." Namjoon pauses before he bursts out in laughter.
"I need to sit back and get comfy on my couch for this." He says leaning back and crossing his arms. "She's a grad student? What's her name?" Jin nods.
"Y/N. 25 and so fucking attractive. It's frustrating." Jin groans into his hands.
"And you're telling me you see her more than just a distraction? I mean, I have to ask cause you are going through a rough patch with Grace." Although this is definitely not what Namjoon agrees with, he was only going to advise Jin on how to approach things. But execution-wise, it was up to Jin because this was his life. Namjoon was only part of it.
"She's smart, and she's fun. And.. she's refreshing."
"What did she do to make you feel this way?"
"She kissed me. In my classroom. And," Jin swallows the lump in his throat. "It happened again last night. It almost escalated into other things. But she stopped it." He quickly says because he can see Namjoon's facial expression changing. "She stopped it and she put me in my place because it just made things even more complicated. She said that we should keep our distance from each other."
"Which, she's right Jin. You really can't be doing this." Namjoon says sternly. "Please don't be stupid. This can hurt alot of people, especially since you're still engaged to Grace."
"I know, but likeeeeee--"
"No but's." Joon shook his head. Honestly, he didn't expect this behavior from Jin and it concerned him. "I can't force you on how to act, that's solely up to you. But you need to understand that it has to be one or the other, it can't be both. You either try and work things out with Grace and leave Y/N alone, or you call it quits with Grace."
"Y/N has been occupying my mind lately and it's been hard to push her out."
"Maybe that should be a sign as to what you need to do?" Joon sighs. "I don't know. I don't know her, so I can't say much, but are you really ready to throw away all these years with Grace for her? Like, is it really that serious?" Jin shrugged.
"I don't know, she doesn't want this."
"Correction - she doesn't want this because you're engaged. It's obvious that things would be different if the circumstances changed."
"I love Grace. A lot. We've been through so many things together, lots of ups and downs that taught us things."
"Yeah, and I love you both. I love Grace like a sister. But you can't stick around just because of history and because you both are comfortable, if that's what it really comes down to. It's not fair for both parties. If you find out that this is the end of your relationship with Grace, then it's the end."
"I'm just torn."
"Look, whatever you do, know that I support you no matter what and I'm always going to be here for you. But please do this right, no matter what that is. You can't have both of them."
"Yeah I know, I hear you." Joon nods.
"You're selfish, you know that?" Joon laughs. "You couldn't even introduce her to your single friends?" Jin smiled.
"Nope. Finders keepers." Joon rose his middle finger. "Just do me a favor and keep your mouth shut until I tell Yoongi and Hoseok myself."
"Sure, whatever. Not my battle anyways." He stood up and stretched. "So, where are we taking your little Jungkookie tonight?"
"The club so he can get some for his birthday."
"What a good older brother." Jin laughed.
"Is Grace in New York already?"
"Yep. I'm probably just going to head home and sleep until then. I don't remember the last time I stayed up this late, let alone the last time I went to a club."
"Yeah go home, and not to Y/N's house."
"Should I?" Jin joked, but Namjoon rolled his eyes. "I'm kidding, don't worry. Everything didn't just go in one ear and out the other."
"Yeah, please reassure me and tell me that I didn't waste time giving you advice."
Tumblr media
"Oh my god, hurry up!" Jimin groaned loudly as he laid sloppily on your couch, getting restless while waiting for you, Ryujin and Taehyung to finish getting ready. To be fair, you all had been getting ready and fooling around for 2 hours, while Jimin sat patiently and watched whatever was on TV.
"Shut up, Jimin! I'm going to make sure I look good tonight." Ryujin yelled back.
"For who?"
"The dick I'll be getting."
"Why did I even ask?" Jimin sighed and dug his head into a pillow while you and Ryujin continued to yell and sing along loudly to every song that came through on your bluetooth speakers. "You all look good already, please, what else do you need to do?" He mumbled into the pillow. Don't get him wrong, he loves you all to death. He truly does. But it's just been such a long time since you all have gone out like this. He forgot what it was like.
"You know, she really means me." Taehyung tugged on his collar and swiped his thumb across his bottom lip.
"Okay, honestly. You two should probably fuck already. Get it out of your systems, you know?" You say as you dab lip gloss on your lips before shrugging and rolling your eyes. "Jesus Christ."
"Okay, no. You're supposed to be on my side, and that doesn't help." Ryujin's cheeks flush to a rosy tint as she pulls you aside. You knew damn well she was feeling embarrassed because it was true. She wanted to. Once Ryujin finally dusted herself off and was satisfied with her outfit, you both walked out into the living room to meet Jimin and Taehyung. Their eyes widened as they caught sight of you two, Ryujin in a pink, ruched dress with matching pink heels and you in a matching 2-piece skirt and low cut crop top.
"Oh shit, you both look good as hell." Taehyung says as he gets up and continues to eye both of you up and down. Mostly Ryujin, though. "Shall we head out?"
"Yup!" You say as you come to Jimin's side and lead the way out of your apartment. Jimin decided he'd drive tonight since he didn't feel like drinking too much, but he still wanted to go out and have fun. The crew headed to grab dinner at the Farmhouse Kitchen, which served the best Thai food in town. You all enjoyed some good grub, along with some really strong cocktails. You felt super happy that you all had time to finally do this since it's been a minute. You felt like you could finally let lose and get your mind off of things. The things that your dearest bestfriends don't even know about.
But, stories for other days. Tonight, you felt good and you looked good. You were all that and then some. Maybe tonight was the night you could meet a single, fine ass man to dance up on and act up with.
The cocktails were hitting you and Ryujin the most, already feeling tipsy before heading into the club.
"Wooooo!" Ryujin yelled before laughing out loud. "I'm ready!"
"Okay, yes, same, but please keep it together so we can at least make it inside the club." Jimin pleaded. He led your crew up to security, flashing your IDs one by one and paying for the cover fee before stepping in to the already packed nightclub. You and your friends ended up walking in a straight line, holding each other's hands to navigate through the crowd to the bottom floor. The top floor was the most crowded, being it was the house / EDM floor, while the bottom Hip Hop floor wasn't too jammed packed.
"Shots, my friends?" Taehyung asks as he swings over to the front of the bar. You follow behind him and line up against the bartender, asking for some good ol' Don Julio tequila. It wasn't your fave, but it was definitely Taehyung's go-to, and you can't lie, it got the job done quick for you. You all stick around the bar to take your shots, kicking them back to back [besides Jimin] to really get this night started.
As you waited for the final around, Taehyung is scanning the room and notices a group loudly making their way from down the steps and over to the bar. They were cheering on whoever the birthday boy was. A face in the group had looked familiar, so Taehyung squints his eyes to get a better look, and realizes its no other than Jin with his friends.
"Oh, shit! Look! Mr. Kim's here!" Taehyung laughs and says loudly, pointing towards the other end of the bar.
"Is he really?! Let's go take a shot with him and his friends!" Ryujin squeals as she sees him come into full view. You too, get a glimpse of him as they approach the bar and suddenly, you felt hot and nervous - the alcohol being of no help during this time. He looked good, and he didn't look like the already-handsome-professor you had. His hair was more natural, slightly curly, and almost like he had showered and let it messily air dry. The look was perfect on him. Not gonna lie, you were somewhat happy he was here to see how good you looked and part of you really wanted him to crave you until he couldn't take it anymore. You wanted to drive him crazy, and little did you know that you already were. It was a game you didn't mind playing, especially since you knew you couldn't have him.
You shouldn't.
"Ayeeeee! Mr. Kim!" Taehyung's ass yells with Ryujin cheering in the back. He does nothing but flash that smile of his while chuckling. His friends are all really handsome as well, one especially caught your eye with the way his wavy black hair fell down his eyes as he stood against the bar in black ripped jeans and a button up shirt. He seemed to be the youngest out of the group, but you were just assuming.
"Let's take a shot! On me!" Ryujin yells as she runs over with her loud ass. You follow behind her with Taehyung and Jimin, slightly hiding behind Jimin since you were feeling a little shy and awkward at this encounter. The events of the past days just flashed before your eyes, and you can feel Jin's eyes burning holes through you from your peripherals.
"These are your students?" You overhear as one of them looks behind at Jin and laughs.
"Yup." Is all he says, hands deep into his pockets.
"That's her isn't it?" Namjoon says in his ear, loud enough to make sure its clear over the music blasting. Jin simply looks at him without saying a word before returning his attention back on Jungkook, who he noticed was eyeing you. The look said everything to Namjoon.
"Do you know her?" Jungkook points at you and Jin nods.
"Why?"
"Why? She's gorgeous." His eyes light up, causing Namjoon to slightly choke and laugh behind Jin.
"Go for it." Is all Jin says. He's honestly livid right now, because the thought of someone else being able to get a taste of you while he hasn't fucks him up.
"Ohhh, boy." Namjoon sighs. "I hope you're truly over her or else it's going to get really fucked up, you know that right?"
"Don't worry about it." He says, dismissing him as he takes the shot from Yoongi's hand and immediately downs it.
"Hey." The black-haired cutie that caught your eye pushed his way through the group to come into full view. "I'm Jungkook."
"Y/N." You lightly shake his hand before tucking a strand behind your ear.
"I just wanted to say that you're absolutely gorgeous." He says cutely, his hands tucked into his pockets.
"Aw, thank you. That's so sweet."
"I, uh—"
"It's his 23rd birthday today!" One of the guys against the bar yells, grabbing Jungkook's shoulders and playfully massaging it.
"Yeah, it's his birthday Y/N! Give the boy some love!" Ryujin winked from where she was at.
"Happy Birthday." You chuckled as he nods.
"Thanks. Maybeeeee you can bless me with a dance after this shot?" He asked shyly. Boy, was he fucking attractive. You could see his thighs poking through the rips of his jeans, his sharp collarbone poking out from the unbuttoned portion of his shirt and his arm muscles defined even in the dark.
"Yeah, I'd love to." You leaned back against the bar as he stood next to you, waiting for the round of shots to come. "Are these your friends?" He chuckled.
"More like big brothers? That's Yoongi, that's Hoseok and that's Namjoon. They're Jin's friends. Jin is my stepbrother." You swallowed the lump in your throat as you quickly glance at Jin, who's side-eyeing you as he leans against the bar. You have got to be fucking kidding me. God was truly testing you.
"Ohhhh." You respond. "That's sweet of them to take you out."
"I honestly didn't wanna do much, let alone come to the club. It's not really my thing, but I'm glad I did or else I wouldn't have met you." He smiled, his smile being just as perfect as his stepbrother's.
"I'm glad I could make your birthday a good one after all." Ryujin suddenly comes to your side and gives your arm a good squeeze.
"He's a cutie! You better hop on that since Mr.Kim is taken." She says in your ear, pulling you into a hug.
"That's his stepbrother."
"Even better!" She exclaims, making you shake your head. You all gather and take the last round of shots in honor of Jungkook's birthday and shit gets wild, quick. Your group led them to the dance floor, partying together like you had known them since forever. It didn't feel awkward at all knowing it was Jin and group of friends, but it did get awkward when you felt the tension with Jin every time you were near him. He didn't like seeing you dance all up on his stepbrother, getting all handsy and touchy-feely when just the other night, you were straddling his lap, ready to risk it all.
Hell, what was he gonna do though? He couldn't do shit. Not with his people around, especially Namjoon.
You knew this. He didn't have to say anything for you to know he wasn't a fan of it. You'd catch him looking at you throughout the night, his eyes hungry and almost dark. Let's get this straight - there's no bad blood here. You're not mad or bitter [slightly]. You're just having your fun because you're single and can do whatever the fuck you want. You know he wants you, what's wrong with a little tease?
A couple of songs have passed and Ryujin has made her way through Taehyung, Yoongi and Namjoon, and now she was back to doing her own thing on the dance floor. Jimin has had a couple of ladies welcome themselves onto his lap, and he gladly accepted. You loved seeing Jimin have fun and you especially loved when girls swooned at the sight of him because he was deserving of it and he was mighty good looking. He always worked hard and never gave himself a break.
You, on the other hand, had been stuck to the hip with Jungkook and you had brought him deeper into the dance floor, away from the group just to get a little alone time. You had danced up on him majority of the night, his muscular arms always gently bringing you back against his body. You both were feeling some type of way with the alcohol running through your veins, but you weren't complaining one bit. Alcohol or not, Jungkook was fine.
"So, are you going to let me take you out on a date?" Jungkook asks in your ear, causing you to bite onto your bottom lip.
"I'd love to go out on a date with you." You face him, his smile going from ear to ear as he nods and starts taking down your number. To be honest, you could be here all night with him, but you decided you needed a break from all this dancing and from the crowded dance floor. You quickly excuse yourself to the bathroom, suddenly needing to break the seal really badly and freshen up. As you were exiting the bathroom, Jin was also exiting the men's bathroom at the same time. You both locked eyes, with you breaking the contact with a small, toothless smile before walking off.
"Y/N." He says, gently grabbing your wrist and pulling you back towards him. His body is against the back wall, both of your groups distant and not as visible from where you're standing. He looks down at you, his hand still wrapped around your wrist.
"Jin."
"You haven't said one word to me all night."
"I'm trying to keep my distance from you, remember?"
"You know that's not necessary." His hand was now on the small of your back, fingers gently caressing your back in small circles.
"It is. You know what you do to me." You say as you look down at his lips. Truthfully.
"And so do you." You can feel his breath against your skin and it sends goosebumps down your entire body. You're trying your hardest right now to not get turned on by this man, let alone throw yourself onto him. "This isn't fair, you know?"
"I gotta get back to everyone." You say, slightly pulling back.
"Just for the record," He gently pulls you back, his other hand lifting your chin. "Jungkook might have you right now, but I know in the end you'll be coming home to me and that's all that matters." He lets go of your wrist and walks away, leaving you slightly dumbfounded at the way he stood his ground like that. Your panties felt soaked, and you wanted nothing more but to ride this man into the next dimension. He was truly testing you, and quite frankly, you could burst any minute now.
"You okay?" Jimin says, lightly squeezing your arm. "You were gone for awhile."
"Yeah, long line." You lied.
"We're thinking about heading out, you good with that?" You nod silently. You look around to see Ryujin flirting with Yoongi and Namjoon, making you shoot him a look. "Not me, all you. Go get her." He shakes his head, chuckling.
"Alright, I need to say bye to Jungkook anyways."
"Oooh, Jungkook." He wiggles his eyebrows. You make your way over to the area that Jin and his friends are occupying, prying Ryujin's drunk ass away. You give Jungkook a tight hug and a kiss on the cheek, letting him know you'd be waiting for his text.
Finally, you all headed out of the club and into Jimin's car, Ryujin being the first drop off of the night. Thank God he had decided to drive, because all three of you were still pretty tipsy and in no condition to get behind the wheel.
"Y/N, listen to me. You need to hop on Jungkook because he's fine as fuck!" Ryujin's drunk ass yells in the backseat as Jimin is making his way to her house.
"Ouch, Ry, stop kicking my chair." Jimin whines.
"Y/N, did you hear me?"
"I hear you loud and clear, Ry. Thank you." You laugh.
"And you, Jimin! I hope you grabbed a ton of numbers because there were tons of pretty ladies feeling you tonight and you need a girl!"
"Perfect, thank you for pointing out how single I am." He says, making Taehyung snorts.
"What about me?"
"Shut up, Tae. You don't need shit. Mind your own business." You and Jimin laugh in your seats.
"Also, Mr. Kim was really eyeing the hell out of you tonight, Y/N." She adds, making you sigh silently to yourself.
"Actually, I concur." Jimin chimes in. "He couldn't keep his eyes off of you."
"Mistress Y/N." Taehyung calls out, causing you to turn and pinch him on the leg. If you haven't gotten it by now, Tae loves to tease the fuck out of you by calling you a mistress. It's been his thing since you got all googly-eyed for him. And you hated it. You truly wanted to fight him every single time.
"It was nothing. He was probably just drunk."
"Sure." Jimin responds. "Call it what you want, he was definitely feeling you tonight." The ride goes silent, which, you're happy that none of them are pressing on it. You were not trying to get caught up at this moment.
Ryujin gets dropped off before Jimin makes his way to your apartment, parking in the yellow passenger/loading zone. Taehyung is knocked out in the back seat, while Jimin throws his hazards on and walks you to the front door of the lobby.
"Thanks for driving, Chim." He smiles and pulls you into a hug.
"No prob. Call me if you need me?" You nod. You walk in and get into the elevator, Jimin and his car disappearing in sight. You take a deep breath and sigh because you had been having an internal battle since the moment you stepped out of the club.
You were losing.
You stepped out of the elevator, only to step into your apartment to quickly freshen up and throw on comfier clothes. You find yourself heading back downstairs to meet your Uber. You knew exactly where you were going and you knew exactly what you were doing.
But you didn't give a fuck. You had been dying to get your needs fulfilled and the only person you wanted was a quick 25 minute Uber trip away.

Yes, yes I know I've been obsessing but I've just finished Psychopath Diary and well, wasn't that drama Amazing? So here's a spoilers-full list of stuff I can't get out of my mind
This drama proved that Yoon Shi Yoon looks good in anything, the grandma outfit ✔, the prison uniform ✔, the red hat ✔
Tumblr media
Playing someone like Dong Sik must have been so much fun, he was so dedicated to make that dork over the top in ANY situation
The real scene stealer of the drama though was Park Sung Hoon, he possessed the last brain cells of the entire cast and it showed. He was an antagonist I respected and was fascinated by. He was evil, cold and totally obessed with our main guy.
Tumblr media
Dong Sik being a drama queen and overreacting was so fun to watch, especially in the beginning when he had embraced his psychopath self
All the films and monologues he went around quoting
Tumblr media
The stupid questions he asked jerk director while pretending to be Jigsaw
They threw around the word psychopath, predator and profiling a bit too much for my liking, but I've seen worse in other thriller dramas
The ost for this drama was nice, especially the theme that always played at the end of the episodes
The whole copycat thing was distracting, but it made sense story-wise
The accumulated guilt dong sik started feeling episode by episode broke my heart
Officer Shim is a precious leading lady
I love that she is like so small but they never made her wear heels, that she was smart and competent until the end, that she had a moral compass like no other
I love the fact the she was not there just to be in danger: she was targetted by the murderer because of her father, because of her digging for the truth no matter what
I love that she doubted herself during the process, most of the times you see these characters that have so much misplaced confidence that I'm like... how?
Also my girl shoot the psycho in the end and took a bullet in the arm
Taek-Soo and Chil-Sung were so precious
Take-Soo thank you for showing that friendship is real and you don't have to romantically like your female senior colleague to respect her
"I see your beard is growing nicely"
Blood Brothers T.T
Tumblr media
How could you think he'd betray you (my heart seriously)
Dong Sik family omg, you usually see so much conflict with stepmothers and stepbrothers (see psycho-boy family), but they just... loved each other so much? and I was like... is this really happening? did kdramaland gave us a functioning extended family...? Is this the real life?
The whole plan Dong Sik had for being a serial killer was actually getting beaten up and smiling like a maniac. But even then he ended up saving people. We stan one precious boy.
Thinking about it Dong Sik was actually the leading lady of this drama: nice to a fault✔, mistreated✔, not the brightest out there✔, has a rich guy take a liking to him✔
Park Sung Hoon was mesmerizing with his outfits and evil laughters, he slowly became the puppeteer pulling all the strings
Tumblr media
The whole thing started with him being fascinated by Dong Sik, the elevator scene had me screaming, the music was so perfect but you'd still think they were flirting, c'mon
He thought he'd found someone who could understand him and then he discovered he was a weakling with amnesia, and how dare he be!
But ah! too late, he was obsessed so he wanted to take Dong Sik to his level and then defeat him
The dude actually set up cameras to watch Dong Sik murder the detective! Ehm sir you could have continued with being drinking buddies, this is all very intense
I think he was so intoxicated with these games that he slipped, he understimated other detectives, forgot other players, provoked Dong Sik the ultimate selfless guy
Dong sik escaping prison Only when officer Shim was being threatened (how is he so... good?)
The phone call was pure genius
Both of them
The glasses trick, yes take that, psycho boy, his blood brother taught him that
Tumblr media
I'd have loved to see more of Detective Shim in action, the actor was amazing
Dong Sik letter to his mom T.T
It's not a fault to be nice
All the scenes in the escape room were hilarious (okay not the first attempted murder, that was just intense)
Tumblr media
The team plans to go against the killer were satisfying, you could see them holding on against evil
The family reunion healed my heart, together with Dong Sik's dad shouting in order to drive away his son and not let him get caught by detectives
When Dong Sik showed up, painted his face with blood and then gave us the purest smile in the history of smiles
Did... did Dong Sik start throwing random stuff at a serial killer with a gun?!
And there I thought this drama could not pleasantly surprise me anymore
Tumblr media
I loved that Dong Sik became a writer, I'd say that it suits him
Also they were giving me Castle and Beckett vibes in the end😍
All in all this drama was a rollercoaster, it went from hilarious to sinister in a heartbeat and delivered so many satisfying moments.
It wasn't perfect, but you bet it's one of the greatest kdrama I've ever seen and it made my top5, no doubts.
(Also I may add stuff to the list, I am so forgetting something)

Stranger Things, Billy & Max, last day in CA, snippet
Notes: This is the most complete part of a fic I am working on (heavy air quotes), that was meant to explore my feelings on Max and Billy’s sibling relationship and what a ‘last day in California’ might look like for them.  This was written before season 3 came out.
I’d love to know what you think, if anything.
--
Max made a disgusted sound as she caught sight of her stepbrother flirting with a pair of girls farther down the beach. Billy leaned in closer, saying something that caused the girls to laugh so loud that Max could hear them over the surf and she made another gagging noise.
“Hey, Max, get your skinny butt over here!” Billy called to her, jerking his head up like he was summoning a dog. Max scoffed loudly, but walked over all the same.
“Aw, is this your little sister? She’s so cute!” One of the girls gushed, bending down to get a better look at Max, and giving Billy a better look at the cleavage spilling out of her bikini top.
“Yeah, this is Maxine,” Billy said with fake affection, “Just thought we’d spend a day at the beach.”
“That is so sweet,” The girl with the bikini looked over at her friend, exchanging a glance that was probably some secret girl code that Max couldn’t decipher yet and hoped she never would, “Most of the guys we know would rather be caught dead than hanging with their little sister.”
“Mm-hmm, it’s so...attractive to see a guy who actually cares.”
The girls let out another giggle together and Max looked up at Billy in disbelief. Were these really the type of girls he liked?
“Can we leave now?” She asked instead, not holding back a roll of her eyes.
“Why don’t you run along, Maxine, go splash in the water, huh?  We’re gonna be land-locked for the rest of our lives, so go enjoy it,” Billy said with gritted teeth, still playing up the fake affection, and ruffled her hair, pushing her away. Max batted at his hand and stalked away with an annoyed huff. The girls who had been simpering over her a minute ago laughed and didn’t give a backward glance as Billy steered them toward his car.
Billy had been gone for an hour or two, who knows, Max had lost track of time. For a while it had been liberating, she was there by herself, she could do whatever she wanted. She rolled up her jeans as high as they would go and kicked around in the waves, laughing when the bigger ones splashed up to her thighs. She chased seagulls and watched the surfers, she climbed rocks and yelled at the top of her lungs, she joined a pair of siblings hunting for hermit crabs in the tide pools before they both had to leave.
It was dark now, the sun had gone down and Max was convincing herself that the tears forming in her eyes were caused by the cool wind blowing in from the water. The beach was still crowded despite the late hour, some bonfires had sprouted up and there were people laughing and the sound of glass smashing, but Max didn’t go near them. She stuck to the outskirts, shivering in her short sleeve T-shirt and damp jeans.
“Hey, little girl!” Someone shouted at her, but she turned away, “Are you cold? You could come over here, we’ll keep you real warm!”
She could hear laughter follow her as she broke out into a run.
Max was starting to panic, actually panic. She had stopped running a while ago to sit down in the sand, but her heart was still pounding and to her immense disappointment, her lip had begun to tremble. She was going to be the lost little girl sitting on the side of the highway crying instead of doing something to help herself. Max didn’t want to be like that, she wanted to be strong, she wanted to be tough. Her skin was going to be armor, her eyes would be a shield, and her voice would be a weapon, she wasn’t going to need anyone. Not her mother, not her father, and definitely not Billy.  She brought her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around herself, trying to warm up.  She heard a shout behind her and buried her face in her arms.
“Hey!  What the hell is wrong with you? I’ve been driving up and down this damn beach trying to find you!”
Max turned around and was momentarily blinded by headlights, she could only make out the vague silhouette of her stepbrother.  Max could not decide if she was more relieved or angry.
She got up off of the sand and stomped toward her stepbrother, her hands shaking.
“You left me!” She yelled shrilly, pushing every ounce of her little body at Billy, giving him a hard shove that sent him back a couple steps and put an amused smile on his face. He was laughing at her. That realization made Max see red and she launched herself at him again even harder than the first time with another yell, this time taking him to the ground. Billy wasn’t laughing anymore and he pushed himself up with a stony look in his eyes, brushing the sand off his jacket. Max tensed and prepared herself to fight or run, whichever she decided to do in that split second. Billy took one step towards her, breathing heavily.
“I just wanted to hang out!” She yelled instead, picked up a piece of driftwood and chucking it at her brother, missing, but feeling better for having done it, “I wanted to go for a ride and have some fun before we move to Shit Hole, Indiana, but you had to ruin it! I thought you could be a decent person and you ruined it! I was having fun with you for the first time and you ruined it!” The sentence seemed like it had to be dragged from the pit of her soul; she screamed it out, her voice ragged and hoarse with unshed tears.
It stopped Billy in his tracks though, a look on his face that Max had never seen before.
Billy opened his mouth, hesitated, before finishing quietly, “Just, just get in the god damn car so we can go home.”
“Apologize!” Max yelled at him instead.
“Max, I’m not screwing around, get in the car.”
“Apologize!”
“Get in the car, Max!”
“You say you’re sorry first!”
“I’m sorry!” Billy yelled back finally, raising his arms. “I’m sorry, I messed up!  I turned this into a shit day, cause I’m a shitty brother, is that what you want to hear, Maxine?”
Max’s chest was heaving, and she was barely concentrating on what her step-brother was saying, but at that moment, she was just cold and tired and hungry.
“Let’s just go.”
They rode back in silence, all except for Billy’s stupid music that he was blasting louder than it had been the whole day and was making Max’s ears ache.  Max tried to distract herself by watching the waves catch the moonlight, knowing this was going to be one of the last times she was going to be able to see the ocean, but she was too mad to enjoy it.  Billy had ruined everything.
Billy turned down the music and slowed down as they drove down their street and pulled into the driveway. The house was brightly lit and smelled like pot roast the moment they walked through the door.  Neil and her mom were curled up around each other on the couch, looking content with a half empty bottle of wine between them.  They both hopped up as Max and Billy walked into the living room.
“Hey, sweetheart,” Her mother’s smile was kind, and the kiss she placed against Max’s head made her throat go tight again, “Did you and a Billy have a good time?”
Billy watched Max with a guarded look and Max knew that how she answer that question would determine how Billy would spend the rest of the evening. She thought about telling the truth, for a split second, she did. If she truly wanted to hurt Billy, that was the way to do it. She could tell her mom and stepfather about the biker bar, the speeding, the police car, the two girls in the bikinis, the smoking, and the men at the beach where Billy had left her and hadn’t come back until hours later. She could lay it on thick and start crying; she already looked pathetic, her cheeks sunburned and sand drying in her hair. But, but she didn’t want to hurt Billy, not in the way that her snitching to his father would. Not quite like that. When she hurt Billy, it would be on her terms, and only for her.
So she lied, plastered a smile on her face that stretched her sunburn painfully and lied through her teeth.
“Oh!” Max’s mom’s eyes lit up after she was done telling all about the awesome day she and Billy had had together, “That’s so nice, thank you, Billy. Really, it was very sweet of you to do that.”
Max wanted to vomit at her mother’s sickly sweet tone of voice. Her mother was normally soft spoken, but she really laid it on thick when she was talking to Billy.
“I’m really hungry, Mom, can I just take a shower before I eat?”
“Of course, sweetie, do you want me to put your hair in braids after?” Her mom asks with a big smile, still looking so proud.
Max colored, “No, mom, I haven’t done that since I was, like, seven.”
Her mom chuckled and gave her a kiss on the forehead and Neill ruffled her hair as she walked past him.
She decided to complete the charade by turning to Billy and saying, with just the slightest amount of sarcasm, “Thanks again, Billy, for everything. It really made my last day special.”
Billy’s face went from pinched to smiling in half a second, “Of course, squirt, you’re welcome.”
Max nodded at him, dropping the loving sister act and replacing it with one made of stone, and giving him one last glare before turning to go to her bedroom.
“I’m proud of you, Billy,” Max could hear her stepfather say as she walked down their bare hallway, stripped of all the pictures Max’s mom had hung up, “You’re really stepping into your role as big brother to Maxine. Remember?”
“Respect and responsibility,” Billy replied tonelessly, and Max couldn’t help but mouth along with it, she had heard it so often in the days leading up to the move.
Respect and responsibility.
Billy owed her one now, and it was going to take a lot more than respect and responsibility for them to be even.

The first couple weeks at school hadn’t really gone how Jeremy had wanted, but just about how he had expected. He didn’t really talk to anyone besides Michael and Jared and no one really even acknowledged he was there.
Some kid with a red streak in his hair and always in a muscle shirt took to calling him “tall-ass.” So that was…fun.
Jeremy signed, thinking that this was all just like his old school; practically invisible except for bullies.
A bell rang suddenly and Jeremy remembered he was in 3rd period jazz band lost in thought. He quickly stood up to put away the saxophone he borrowed for the class so he could get to lunch.
He swung around and accidentally caught the side of the music stand with his saxophone. The stand and libretto papers went flying in all directions. Jeremy turned bright red and quickly squatted down to frantically pick up papers, snickers and whispers following him down.
Jeremy’s mind was racing, telling him how stupid he was and how this was the reason no one wanted to be caught dead talking to him. He saw a shadow looming over his shoulder and he had the sinking feeling it was someone ready to make a joke at his expense.
It wasn’t, just Zoe, the girl who played the guitar in the jazz band, bending over to help him gather up his sheet music. She was so pretty and cool and smiled at him when she handed him the fallen papers.
“Thanks,” Jeremy said with a bashful smile.
“No problem. I’ve done that a bunch of times too, they’re pretty easy to knock over.” Zoe said.
Jeremy let out a small laugh and nodded in agreement, not sure if she was just trying to be nice, but not really caring either way.
“Hey, you’re new, right?” Zoe asked.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m new. I’m Jeremy. I went to Glacier Peak before, down in the valley.” Jeremy explained.
“Cool, I’m Zoe,” Zoe said and stuck her hand out to shake Jeremy’s “Why’d you switch schools?”
Jeremy shook her hand and continued to spout out information, so ecstatic to have someone to talk to, “My dad got married and he and my stepmom bought a house closer to this high school. Plus my stepbrother goes here and they didn’t want to move him to a different school for his senior year.”
“Who’s your brother?”
“Evan Hansen.”
Zoe had a thoughtful look on his face before saying, “I don’t think I know him.”
“Oh, yeah, uh, most people don’t. He keeps to himself mostly.”
“Nice,” Zoe said with a nod and a smile.
It seemed like the end of the conversation but Jeremy really didn’t want it to be.
“Do you have any brothers or sisters who go here?” It was the first thing Jeremy thought of as Zoe grabbed her guitar case.
Zoe pulled a face, “I have a brother who goes here, Connor Murphy.”
Jeremy didn’t mean to let her see his surprise. She just seemed so normal and calm in comparison.
She laughed “Yep, that’s my brother, crazy, psycho dude.”
Jeremy awkwardly smiled, “If you hadn’t told me, I never would have guessed you guys were related if that makes you feel any better,” Jeremy said
Zoe snorted and nodded, “That’s good to know.”
She slung her backpack over a shoulder and shifted her guitar case to the other hand. She shot him a peace sign and a sweet smile. “Nice meeting you Jeremy, see you tomorrow,” Zoe said and left the band room.
Jeremy smiled broadly and waved.
He’d made his first friend!
-
Rich was not impressed. This whole situation was so…he didn’t even know what to think. Catastrophic? Tragic? Heartbreaking? Stupid?
Rich was standing with his best friend Jake at their lockers, waiting for class to start. Jake was digging through his locker, looking for something for the last couple minutes.
On the other side of Jake were two of Jake’s other friends, Chloe and Brooke, who were chatting up a storm.
“Did you see what Stephanie Kipp was wearing yesterday?” Chloe asked, whirling a stand of hair around her finger.
“No, what was it?” Brooke asked
“It was bright yellow culottes! Isn’t that gross?” Chloe asked
Brooke’s mouth fell open in real surprise “What? No way!”
“Yeah! Yeah! I’m literally not even kidding. I saw her in math yesterday and that’s what she was actually literally wearing and I was like what the actual fuck.” Chloe said
Rich snorted, happy not to be wrapped up in their stupid girl conversation. The only reason Rich even put up with them was because Jake and Chloe had stayed dated freshman year and stayed friends.
“You ready for practice tonight Jake?” Rich asked, trying to drown out the conversation next to them.
Jake turned back from his locker with a smile, “You know it, bro. I’m so ready for the meet on Saturday. We’re gonna kick ass!”
“Yeah, the Mavericks are gonna eat ass!” Rich laughed
He reached out his hand and Jake smacked fists together in a secret handshake. Jack reached up and smacked Rich’s face. Rich laughed and shoved him.
“You wanna go?” Jake playfully laughed and slammed his locker closed “Huh? Let’s go!”
“We’re gonna go? Let’s do it!” Rich grinned and suddenly Jake had his arms around Rich’s neck.
Jake started laughing and grinding his fist over Rich’s head.
“Fuck Jake stop!” Rich yelled, still laughing.
He squirmed and tried to get out of it with no luck. Jake finally let him go after a few more moments. Rich felt a little breathless and his heart was beating fast but laughed anyway. He snapped his arm forward and punched Jake in the gut, it wasn’t that hard, Jake had tensed up but he let out a noise like it had been a more powerful blow.
“God you guys, don’t be so gay.” Chloe sneered
Rich tensed up and snapped at her, “Fuck off Chloe. Don’t be such a bitch.”
He felt like his blood was gonna fucking boil every time that word was associated with him. He wasn’t a fucking faggot.
“Hey, it’s cool.” Jake chuckled, sticking out his tongue a little.
Rich reached up to mess with his hair, making sure all the dyed red strands were aligned back in the middle. He looked out at the stream of students walking past, looking to get some anger out of him. Chloe had seriously pissed him off just now.
Oh hell yeah, here comes tall-ass. He waited until the new kid was right in front of him
“Virgin” He coughed as loudly as he could, then coughed a few times for good measure.
Tall-ass glanced over at him and turned bright red. Rich grinned, feeling good. He heard Chloe, Brooke, and a few other people around snicker.
“Oh, sorry tall-ass, didn’t see you there.” Rich said, feigning innocence, “Wouldn’t have said that if I had known, but it’s pretty obvious already.”
The kid cast his eyes towards the ground and scurried off, face as red as a cherry tomato.
Fuck yeah! Rich felt great.
“God he’s pathetic,” Rich said leaning back at the locker, looking over at Jake.
Jake pulled his head out from his locker, “What?”
Rich rolled his eyes, Jake hadn’t even been paying attention or listening for the past couple minutes.
“Uh! Yes, he’s so gross.” Chloe scoffed “I bet he is a virgin.”
“Oooh, he’s in my chemistry class. I thought he seemed nice.” Brooke said
“Who?” Jake asked
“That new kid, Jerry or whatever,” Chloe said
“Seems like a fucking loser if you ask me,” Rich said
“I heard he and Zoe Murphy are friends,” Jake shrugged.
Chloe let out a mean laugh, “Yeah if you like sad, ugly freaks.”
Rich snickered, maybe Chloe wasn’t that bad.
Jake shrugged again, “I don’t know you guys. He’s kinda cute.”
“WHAT?!” Rich, Chloe, and Brooke yelled together.
Rich couldn’t believe what he was fucking hearing. Was he in the twilight zone? Was Jake crazy? Yeah, Jake like guys just as much as girls and Rich didn’t really give a shit but just…TALLASS?!
“Yeah, I mean, dorky hipsters are kinda in right now, right?” Jake asked with a laugh “Besides, he’s all people are talking about, so might as well, right?”
Rich’s mouth was hanging open as he watched Jake walk away, headed towards first period.
What the actual fuck just happened? Rich felt like he was going to black out,. Why the hell was he even interest in that guy?
He looked over at Brooke and Chloe who were furiously texting away on their phones.
-
Evan, his mom, Jeremy, and Mr. Heere were all sat around the kitchen table.
Mom used to be gone a lot more with work and classes, but she was able to take some time off now thanks to the combined income of her and Mr. Heere’s. She was starting to learn how to cook properly too so they were having home cooked teriyaki chicken and white rice instead of takeout.
Evan tried not to pick at his food. He really loved homemade food but he really wasn’t hungry. He never really was.
“How was school these past couple days, you guys?” His mom asked.
“It was okay - alright, you know. Nothing…too exciting happened” Evan lied, thinking back to the numerous panic and anxiety attacks he’d already had.
“I started talking to a few new people at school,” Jeremy answered, looking like he was vibrating in excitement.
Evan looked over at him, slightly jealous of Jeremy’s luck at the school in just a few weeks, while he had been there for 3 years.
“Hey, that’s great!” Hr. Heere said.
“What are their names? Are they in your grade?” Evan’s mom asked.
“One is Zoe Murphy” Evan perked up at the name, “She’s in my jazz class and we started talking a few days ago. She’s really nice.”
Evan felt his stomach drop a little.
“I’m really proud of you son.” Mr. Heere said, “Who are the other kids?”
“Well that one isn’t really a friend but uh,” Jeremy’s face turned a little red. “His name’s Jake and I uh actually think he’s gonna ask me out…like on a date.”
“Wait, Jake Dillinger?” Evan asked
“Yeah. I heard from Zoe’s girlfriend Alana that some girl named Madeline saw on twitter that some of Jake’s friends posted that he had talked about me and then yesterday when I was walking down that hallway he said hi to me and smiled.”
Evan inwardly cringed. Jake didn’t really seem the best kind of person. Plus this might all just be a prank on Jeremy. But Jeremy must be really excited about it because he rarely offered up that much personal information at family dinner.
Evan glanced over and saw his mom and Mr. Heere exchange a look. His mom cleared her throat awkwardly.
“Boys, Paul and I were actually just talking before you started school about rules we wanted to set up now that we’re together and...” His mom trailed off looking at Mr. Heere.
“We’ve decided that we don’t want either of you dating until you get out of high school.” Mr. Heere stated, trying to look authoritative.
“What?!” Evan and Jeremy asked at once, though Jeremy seemed to shout it.
“Well, you know, we were both talking about how horrible both our dating lives were before we met and how it really started because we had started dating the wrong people in high school and it was distracting us from our school work and lives so we figured that we should just take away the option so you wouldn’t have to worry about it.” Mom rambled, looking a little unsure.
Evan felted shocked. This felt sort of out of nowhere. Evan had never even really talked to his mom about dating before so it seemed strange she felt the need to create a rule for something he didn’t have anything to do with.
“Dad, Heidi, that’s not fair. I really think Jake might ask me out and I’ll the only person at our school who’s not dating.” Jeremy said, looking back and forth between the two adults.
“We just want to protect you Jeremy. Plus, your brother doesn’t date.”
Evan felt a little flustered. Of course, he didn’t date, who would want to date him anyway? That didn’t mean he did want to date, he wished someone would ask him out, not that he’d be able to function and actually say yes.
“But no one even wants to date Evan!” Jeremy said, almost smacking his hands down on the table.
“Hey now,” Mom said, in defense of Evan, but Evan knew he was right.
“I wouldn’t – I wouldn’t want to date anyone from school anyway,” Evan said, feeling his eyes start to swell a little. It was almost impressive how fast his stepbrother had turned on him just to date someone like Jake Dillinger.
Mr. Heere looked from Evan’s mom to Evan to Jeremy and back again, trying to make up his mind about something.
“Okay, here’s how we solve this one.  Old rule out. New rule: Jeremy can date...” Jeremy’s face brightened, “when Evan does.”
Jeremy’s face fell.
“Are you sure about that, Paul?” Mom asked, looking unsure herself.
“Of course,” Mr. Heere said not sounding that confident.
“But what if Evan never dates?” Jeremy asked in horror.
Evan’s cheeks turned scarlet.
“Then you can officially date when you go off to college.” Mr. Heere said, getting up from the table to clear his plate. Mom joined him and they walked into the kitchen together.
Evan looked across the table at Jeremy, who had a look of disbelief on his face, and wanted to say something but had no clue what. He didn’t want him thinking Evan had any sort of part in this.
Jeremy suddenly stood up and made eye contact with Evan. He wasn’t glaring but the look is his eyes was enough to make Evan shrink down on himself. Jeremy departed from the dining room and was up the stairs in a moment. Evan was left alone at the table listening to Mom and Mr. Heere talking in hushed tones in the kitchen.
Evan sighed.
-
Jeremy was still pissed about his dad’s new rule when he and Evan had arrived at school the next day. The most popular guy at school wanted to date him! But he couldn’t do anything about it! Jeremy wanted to be angry at Evan, wanted to blame him for all of this, but he knew it wasn’t his fault. Why did Evan have to be so awkward and weird? If he wasn’t maybe someone would actually date him and then Jeremy could say yes if Jake asked him out.
Jeremy was still thinking about it by the time lunch rolled around and he slumped down next to Michael in the cafeteria.
“What’s up Jer?” Michael asked, looking up from a Big Gulp cup filled with peach slushie.
“Nothing,” Jeremy mumbled, picking at the dry looking burger he had picked up in the lunch line.
“It’s just that,” He huffed and rolled his eyes, “I heard that Jake Dillinger was going to ask me out, like…the Jake Dillinger and so I mentioned it to my dad and Evan’s mom last night and they said that we’re not allowed to date until we graduate high school! But then I said that wasn’t fair so then they said they I’m allowed to date when Evan dates! Can you believe that? Like–Like–Like Evan doesn’t even have any friends really and he told me before he’s never dated anyone before so he’s never gonna date anyone and I’m never gonna date Jake and it’s so stupid!”
Jeremy crossed his arms and slumped onto the cafeteria table, grumbling under his breath.
Michael and Jared, who had come in just before Jeremy had started his rant, exchanged a look.
“Wait, what?” Jared asked.
Jeremy rolled his eyes again, “I can’t date until Evan dates because my dad and stepmom are sadists and want me to be miserable.”
“Kinky,” Jared interjected, wiggling his eyebrows.
“Why the hell would you want to date Jake Dillinger anyway?” Michael said, pulling a face.
“Dude, Michael, he’s so cool and, just, have you seen him? He’s so tall and he’s always wearing that red jacket and he’s so hot. Literally, everyone wants to date him.” Jeremy explained.
“I’d date ‘em,” Jared said, raising a hand.
“See? He’s just so…cool. And he wants to date me! Me!” Jeremy looked at Michael, expecting to see some sort of realization in his friend’s eyes on how groundbreaking this was.
Michael gave him a skeptical look and shrugged, “I mean, whatever makes you happy dude.”
A sigh escaped him for the billionth time today.
“Can’t really be happy when no one wants to date my anti-social stepbrother. Can’t have Jake till someone wants Evan.” Jeremy grumbled and turned back to his food.
The three of them sat in silence for a while, before Jared started messing around on his phone and showing things to Michael. Jeremy rolled his eyes, but not about Jake this time.
It wasn’t until the end of lunch that Jeremy spoke again.
“Do you wanna hang out after school today Michael? Play some video games?” Jeremy asked.
“Actually Michael and I gotta work on a project for History together. We’re writing about the American Revolution.” Jared said in an exaggerated bored tone.
“Oh, sounds lame,” Jeremy said.
“Yeah, it does,” Michael said with a weird, uncomfortable look on his face.
Jeremy shrugged but then his brain paused at the thought of Jared and Michael hanging out in Michael’s basement, working on homework, together, alone, without Jeremy there. For some reason, that thought seemed to make Jeremy feel even more annoyed at the day, though he didn’t exactly know why.
The bell rang and the three on them stood up and said their goodbyes.
-
Michael and Jared were sitting in Michael’s basement after school playing Halo. Michael tried to focus on the game but mixed emotions from the school day left him distracted. After Jeremy had told him all about the Jake situation, he felt so spacey and out of it.
Michael had been so ecstatic when he heard that Jeremy was going to be moving to his school. He was his best friend and wanted to be around Jeremy all the time. Plus with Jeremy so close by maybe something more could happen between them…
Michael had basically been in love with Jeremy since they were kids. Jeremy was so dorky and nice and completely adorable and Michael had hoped that now that Jeremy was here they could grow closer and maybe one day he could tell him about his feelings…but that was all ruined now. Thanks to Jake-Jerkoff-Dillinger. Who the hell did Jake think he was? He was just some asshole that walked around with an asshole face and looked like an asshole. What did Jeremy even see in the guy?
“MICHAEL” Jared loudly articulated, pulling Michael from his thoughts.
“What?” Michael asked.
“You haven’t moved in a few minutes, I’ve killed you like 40 times. It’s awesome for my kill streak, but are you even gonna try to beat me?”
“Why did you say we were hanging out today? Jeremy said he wanted to hang out and-” Michael started but Jared quickly cut him off.
“Chill dude. You literally looked like you were going to explode after what Jeremy said about Jake at lunch. Not a good idea for you to have to hear more about Dreamy Dillinger from your baby faced boyfriend.” Jared snorted.
Michael huffed, “What am I even supposed to do now? I’ve waited 5 years to tell Jeremy that I like him and now he’s going after someone like Jake. How am I supposed to compete with that?”
“’Kay few thoughts,” Jared said, pausing the game after sniping Michael’s character again, “1. Jeremy described Jake as tall, cool, attractive, red jacketed, and wants to date him. Who else do we know like that?”
Michael cautiously pointed at himself with a raised eyebrow.
“Great, so you have that going for you, basically just Jake but better, which leads us to; 2. Jeremy can’t even date right now so you got time to figure out how to make Jeremy see that you’re everything he wants and more.” Jared explained and wiggled his fingers in a magical way.
“How are we gonna do that?” Michael asked.
“We?” Jared snorted.
“Jared,” Michael grunted, annoyed.
“Yeah, yeah, just kidding, lighten up.” Jared said, “All we gotta do is find someone to date Evan so that Jeremy’s free to date and then you can swoop in and grab him before Jake does.”
Michael contemplated the plan for a while and came up with the obvious flaw.
“Who are we going to get to date Evan? I think everyone just thinks he’s weird.” Michael said.
“Gotta find a kindred spirit. Another social outcast that’s desperate enough to connect with someone like Evan and visa verse.” Jared explained
“Who is it?” Michael asked
“Dude I don’t know. I’ve had like 4 hours to come up with this plan.” Jared said and unpaused the game.
-
The next day at school neither of them had any idea on who to ask. They were in biology, filtering through anyone they could think of.
“Class, I’m going to step out and grab your worksheets from the printer. Start dissecting your frogs please.” The teacher said
“What about Mallard Crawler?” Michael asked
“Dropped out last year. Payton Zeller?” Jared responded
“She’s drunk all the time.” Michael shot back
“Dustin Kroft?”
“Asshole, too brutally honest. Jennifer Jace?”
“Alliterated names are stupid.”
“Tristan Anderson?” Michael tried, pulling on a pair of rubber gloves his teacher had provided for them.
“No.”
“Madeline Smith?”
“No.”
“Brock Johnson?”
“No.”
“Sarah Campbell?”
“No.”
“Okay well, I really don’t know who else then,” Michael sighed, deeply irritated.
He picked up the scalpel and sliced into the live frog’s stomach, noticing Jared look away when he did so.
Michael pulled the skin back and started carefully digging through the frogs guts with small surgical tweezers. He almost crushed the bladder when he felt a hard jab from Jared’s elbow. Michael whipped his head over, glaring at Jared until he noticed what he was focused on across the room.
Michael spotted the scary kid, Connor, sitting alone at a lab table. No one had partnered up with him. He didn’t look too interested in dissecting the frog, his brow furrowed. If Michael didn’t know any better he might have thought that he was slightly uncomfortable or uneasy about the frog in front of him.
“Hey, what about him?” Jared gestured towards Connor.
“No way dude. I heard he lit a state trooper on fire. He just did a year in juvi.” Michael whispered, not wanting Connor to hear him.
“Yeah, well, then at least he’s looking a lay on the outside.” Jared chuckled.
“I'm serious, man. He probably sold his own liver on the black market for that jacket.” Michael said.
They watched as Connor freed the frog from its restraints and flipped it over so it was sitting on its stomach. He lightly poked the frog’s side and it croaked softly. A ghost of a smile just barely touched Connor’s face.
Compassionate. Caring. Empathy. All in that one small act. Coupled with looking pretty sad and lonely and–
“He’s our guy.” Michael sighed and Jared grinned.
“Great,” Jared said and bounced up from this seat before Michael could stop him. He strolled over to Connor who was watching the frog hop around the table.
Michael saw Connor spot Jared getting closer and he immediately bristled. His face went dark and he glared at Jared. Maybe it wasn’t the best plan to let Jared go talk him into the idea.
“Hey Connor, how you doing? Listen I…” Jared started.
Connor quickly snatched his backpack from behind his chair, plucked the frog up off the table, and stormed out of the classroom; all before Jared could get out another word.
Jared turned to Michael and shrugged, “Should have seen that one coming. That psychopath and I have never really played nice before.”
Michael groaned as Jared sat back down next to him.
“How do we get him to date Evan?” Michael asked.
Jared sat in silence for a few minutes looking in deep thought when he finally spoke again, “We could pay him.”
“How do you know he needs money? Isn’t the Murphy family hella rich or something?” Michael asked, going back to pulling organs out of a frog.
“I heard from Jenna Roland that Murphy boy was cut off so he’ll be needing it,” Jared said
“Actually, I don’t know about this…” Michael said, suddenly very hesitant.
“Michael, you want to date Jeremy, right? Then this is the way to do it. Plus we’re helping Connor, so many people end up sucking dick for meth but all he has to do is date some weird kid instead.” Jared explained, using his hands to talk.
“But we don’t have any money,” Michael fired back. “We don’t even have enough  to buy Destiny 2 when it comes out.”
“Yeah, well, what we need is a backer,” Jared said.
“What’s that?” Michael asked.
“Someone with money, who’s stupid,” Jared explained with a toothy grin.
