I'm determined to read and give highlights/ recs on everyone else's fics that were posted this - find those in #prose if you want to get ahead of me, and I'll post mine under #tdw bookclub. Any that were posted to Ao3 are also in this collection.

I have seven days worth of vague prompts to fill from your polls (#poll) - lets hope those are done by next year!

The playlist I opened for you guys to add to is here, and it's looking good (well done for reminding me My Chemical Romance exists!). It's not freely editable any more, but you can still spy, and if you think something is desperately missing, do let me know!

This blog will get a bit of a revamp in the coming weeks, pushing the rules and prompts aside for your wonderful works!

I'm going to pull some stats on what prompts work, assess whether or not I succeeded in my goals, and make a plan for a project like this in the future. That analysis may well be posted on here.

And finally, I need a little break. In general, the queue is going to be slower on this blog than it has been, perhaps more like 5 posts a day instead of 25, so I can cut down on the maintenance it takes. If I decide to run in 2025, the hype train will start again in Autumn, but I'll still be here if you want to chat! Or, find me on my all-sonic blog @wonderinc-sonic

December 2023 Development Update

Happy impending holidays, everyone!

Today was mainly a writing month! I'm happy to announce that the first draft for the script for The Deepwater Witch is officially DONE, with 48,125 words. I've passed it off to my beta readers and received the first round of edits! It's hard to believe that initially this story was intended to be around 5k words, then 15k, then 20k, then 30k...Based on the suggestions that I've received, I think that the script will balloon a little bit more before I'm done, haha! (From now on, I am definitely not planning any hard deadlines for games until the scripting is done...I've learned my lesson.)

I also redid the storyboards for TDW based on the complete script. (I ended up scrapping a lot of the planning I did prior to the scripting, since some scenes ended up longer/some ended up shorter, some scenes were added/some were cut...) Currently I have 22 backgrounds and 18 CGs planned (with about a dozen "stretch CGs" on the docket in case things end up going faster than planned...)

PLANS FOR THIS MONTH

December will be full throttle in the art and coding, with a demo for TDW set to release at the end of the month! It's going to be busy, busy, busy...wish me luck, haha!

Your Current Fandom: Technically still active in the Lokane fandom. Currently in the Romance Club fandom (it's a visual novel app). They're more active on Reddit. Been involved in the football and F1 fandom for a long time now. And CW's Nancy Drew.

How did you first get into fandom?: The last movies of HP came out and my entire class (actually my entire year, I think) were freaking obsessed. So I started looking up stuff so I was as knowledgeable as them. Took me into fanfics, then into Twilight 🤫 and from there...

How long have you been engaging in fandom spaces?: A little over 12 years.

How often do you read fanfic?: Less often than I used to (getting back to writing a little now).

Top three characters from your current fandom?: This is so hard 😅. I'll pick from RC. Adil, The Desert Rose; Vicky Walker, Heaven's Secret; Ares, Rage of the Titans.

Share a personal headcanon that you feel strongly about: That Loki had a little more feelings for Jane than canon ever established.

You’re trying to convince a friend to get into your current fandom(s) with you. what episode, clip, or scene are you showing them?: I tried to convert my friend to Lokane once. It's that scene in TDW, when they first met. For my current fandom... the scene when Vicky slays Satan in Heaven's Secret S2. It was fire. There are scenes like that in the other stories too. For Nancy Drew, I'd say S2 EP11. It's one of my favourite episodes (not that I could choose... they're all good!). For football and F1, just highlight reels.

And finally, what does fandom mean to you?: Community. Comfort. A place where I can just be, learn things, share things. Sometimes they're the brightest spark in my day.

Your Thor metas are interesting. I agree that the neck-touching is very unusual and seems to carry abuse imagery throughout Loki's entire arc (and it's how Loki died by Thanos). I have siblings and I don't think I've ever touched their necks. I am not sure if you like being perceived, so let me know if not.

hi! thank you :D i don't mind being perceived - the reason i post in my own tag rather than the main ones is because there was a stage when i was making 30 or more posts a day and i didn't want to either a) get discoursed or b) get banned. comments questions criticism etc are all welcome :)

and yes, i don't think i've ever done that to my siblings either. but, then again, i've also never used "brother/sister" as a serious form of address. i'd say that, as a non-aggressive gesture of affection, it seems to be a lot more normal within an asgardian cultural context. we see it in a few other relationships:

thor to sif in T1. thor persuades sif to leave the battlefield when it becomes clear she can't win. thor is quite forceful here too - he fully turns her around to look at him, and he's clearly giving her orders - but there's no anger or threat in it.

thor to jane in TDW. they argue - jane actually hits him - and then thor puts his hand on her jaw/neck to tell her "fate has brought us together". thor is trying to get her back on his side, and to cover up his own nerves. (the latter doesn't entirely work.)

odin to frigga in TDW. this is just a gesture, no real tension, but it is a little possessive - he calls her "MY queen" at the same time - and authoritative - he's trying to dismiss her fears for him.

thor to bruce in T3, i think? i can't remember the specifics of this one, but at some point, thor uses it to try to keep bruce calm so he can stay in his human form.

which gives us an interesting bundle of connotations, even before we get to how it mingles with violence for thor and loki specifically.

it's a medium-intimate gesture (friends, family, fellow warriors, etc) that's meant to project an air of invulnerable authority, calm down the recipient, and impose order and social cohesion (which is sometimes a synonym for obedience.)

there are two couples on the list, but even disregarding loki and bruce, the presence of sif makes me pretty confident asgardians don't view it as romantic by default (the way some viewers seem to), since thor not having feelings for sif is A Whole Thing.

HOWEVER. i do think it's subtly gendered - we always see it done by a normative/ideal man to someone with less social power - a woman, or an "overemotional" man, or someone who acts outside their gender role (loki + sif)... etc. (not saying that's a hard rule, to be clear. just an interesting pattern.)

(and it's also relevant that the three recipients of this gesture in TDW - frigga, jane, and loki - all either die a sacrificial death or, in jane's case, very narrowly escape one. TDW treats (self-)sacrifice as a form of subjugation.)

[it's also interesting that there is, as far as i'm aware, precisely one reversal, where the gesture goes up the power dynamic instead of down (loki to thor), and it's in a *deleted scene* in T1. i know a lot of people like to take deleted scenes as canon, and sometimes i do too... but i also like to consider the fact that they ARE, deliberately, deleted. they could've shown us a break in this pattern, but they never did.

(i mean, this certainly won't be the main reason for deleting that scene, given that the motif was solidified in the avengers, but still... it could be a factor. and regardless of intent, the pattern is interesting.)]

[edit: i misremembered the deleted scene! it's STILL thor to loki in that one. so we have NO reversal at all...]

so ummm yeah! overall... in this story, it's not always overtly aggressive to touch someone's neck, but it IS generally pretty hierarchical. and it is pretty normal in asgardian culture... but of course, they're an absolute monarchy. a lot of bad things are "normal" to them lol.

wondering how thor would be nowdays if the had kept the characterization stabilized in tdw...

I think Thor's journey was well on its way to understand his father's mistakes, finally separate himself from him and become a better King of Asgard than Odin ever was, with Loki and Val on his side. His scene with Odin right before he escapes Asgard is proof he could finally see beyond his own wants and needs and think of the well-being of others, that's no minor feat.

It's a shame really, we could have had a mature and wise Thor who fights for his people, inspires them and fights for them in more ways than just physical battles. One thing's for sure, TDW Thor is my favourite Thor.

(I started answering this ask and I don't know why I ended up writing my perfect third Thor movie but I edited it out because it had nothing to do with the ask, then I thought, what the hell, I already wrote it, so it's after the cut)

My ideal third movie would have Loki on the throne (disguised as Odin) sending Thor to specific realms carefully chosen to help Thor realize how much damage Asgard's interventionism had done to them, all the while Loki uses the well of Urðr to contact the norns and dunno, see into the future or something so he finds out about Hela and Ragnarok, and he goes to Earth to confront Odin.

In the meantime Thor returns to Asgard ready to tell off his father but he sees Loki on the throne, they fight and finally Loki lays it all out and for once Thor shuts up and listens… and once Loki is done he starts talking about his life too because it hadn't been easy either, okay?! Thor is pretty messed up as well! Gimme a scene similar to Gamora/Nebula in GoTG2 where both brothers realize the main issue here was their daddy.

They both decide to team up against Asgard's terrible fate + Surtur. Odin still dies in Norway but not before Thor has an argument with him in which he forces him to own up to all his crimes, including taking Loki from Jotunheim and Odin apologizes for it, gimme that scene of T'Challa and T'Chaka but with Thor and Odin!

The Odinsons fight and lose anyway because Hela is a badass but instead of fighting her on the spot upon seeing her Thor tries to reason with her and we have a bro moment with them too… that of course ends in a battle because these 3 guys are all divas but at least we get to see them as siblings.

Shame To My Name

With her father's return a new chapter begins for (y/n) Grimes in a world where the dead started walking. Rick and his daughter had quite a troubled relationship in the past but will the apocalypse help them getting closer again? Or will (y/n) get even more distant from her father?

Chapter 1: His Return

„If you think this is bad wait till you start shaving.“ That voice. Hearing his voice is enough to get my blood boiling. The combination with his know-it-all and I-got-every-right-in-the-world-to-be-sitting-here attitude definitely has me wishing for a walker to strive by and making me their lunch. „Tell ya what. Get through this with some manly dignity and tomorrow I’ll teach you something special…“ Of course Carl’s eyes light up at that. „I’ll teach you to catch frogs.“ They’re both eating out of his hands. Carl looks like he’s the rebirth of fucking Jesus Christ himself and Mom is basically drooling at this point. It’s pathetic. And hella disrespectful. The world went to shit only a couple of weeks ago and it hasn’t even been two months since my dad was shot. Sure, my parents weren’t the most perfect couple that has ever graced the earth but holy shit that woman could have at least waited a little longer before hitting the sheets with dad’s best friend. Of course she thinks that I don’t know about it. I’ve always been my parents naive little girl who’s never going to make it in the real world. I once ears dropped on mom and dad when they were talking about me in the middle of the night. While mom was concerned I would never make it into college (which by the way: WHAT? I was 14 years old back then. It’s not like my friends have gotten their acceptance letters to Stanford at that point) my dad only worried about me not finding a man „with that attitude of hers“. Sorry I’m not buying every bullshit people present me and that I used to have an opinion. However, dad made it very clear early on that my opinion didn’t matter… a fact that only got worse when my brother was born. When dad found out he was having a son he was beaming. From that moment on the Grimes family exclusively turned around Carl. I love by baby brother, I really do and it’s definitely not his fault but the older he got the more attention he received and the worse my relationship to my parents got. When Shane told us that dad was shot on duty and got taken to the hospital I felt numb. Mom and Carl started crying but I just stared at Shane like he told me my school caught on fire. I haven’t cried since. „I’ll go take a leak“, Shane announces and starts heading for the forrest. With the new found peace and quiet I return to my book. Even though I am re-reading the same page for the 5th time I have no idea what it’s all about. My mind keeps drifting of to any place anywhere in the world but here. I always imagined hitting the road after graduating. When my mom was concerned about me not getting into college she was right. The only difference is I never wanted to go to college. I wanted to see the world. I wanted to go to Europe. I wanted to fall in love with a hot-blooded Italian in Capri, I wanted to spend most of my evenings drinking wine in Paris while watching the Eiffel Tower sparkle. While my friends’ worst nightmare was ending up as a waiter I wouldn’t have minded a job like that. A job that gave me enough money to survive but wouldn’t demand too much time. I just wanted to live. Now I don’t even know if Capri or Paris still exist or if anarchy has gotten the best of these places. Now most walking creatures are generally lacking blood and I am very far away from ever falling in love with anyone. I’ll probably die without ever being kissed. „Okay, handsome, we’re done here!“ Mom announces and Carl basically jumps up from mom’s grip. „His haircut is looking good, right, (y/n)?“ I could be honest and tell my brother that mom’s an equally good hairdresser as I am a good rocket scientist but why putting effort into being an asshole when the whole world is falling apart? „The girls will be standing in line“, I absent-mindedly say but as I said it’s not like anyone really cares about my opinion. „Can you watch your brother for a little while? I need to take a nap. I’ll be in the tent“, mom states and heads over to our made up camping ground. She’s so obvious. I am 17 years old and she really believes that she can convince me that she’s not going to the

forrest searching for Shane. She actually believes that I haven’t seen Shane winking at her when he left. She believes that I don’t hear them fucking every other night with Carl and me in the tent next to them. „Yeah sure…“ I tell mom and watch her leave. I look around and see Dale on top of the RV eying after my mom. His gaze turns to me and gives me a knowing look. They all know. Everyone knows that my mom didn’t even wait until my dad was officially pronounced dead before she jumped into another man’s bed. Even though our new group feels like a completely dysfunctional family I feel more at ease with them than I’ve ever felt at home. With the world basically ending and the dead walking there’s no expectations left. Nobody gives a shit about what you’ve achieved in your life or what you have done wrong and which expectations you haven’t met. Today is about survival and whether you can contribute to the groups chance of survival or not. We’re all fighting for each other. Everyone’s giving their all to protect the kids of the group, Carl and Carol’s and Ed’s daughter Sophia, and even the clearly very idiotic Dixon brothers are more or less adhering to the group’s rules and laws. „Do you think we will every get to eat ice cream again?“ Carl asks me. It’s his new thing. Asking whether we will do stuff or see certain things ever again. And even though it drives me against a wall I keep on reminding myself that he’s only 12 years old. I want to protect him and the later he realises that we will probably never live an even similar life to our lives before the better. „I don’t know, buddy. I certainly hope so. If you could have ice cream right now which flavours would you take?“ „Probably strawberry. Or chocolate. Oh, or lemon. No wait! Maybe caramel, but also…“ Before Carl can go on naming every flavour he could possibly think of a siren is going off somewhere. I motion for Carl to stop and take a look around. „Dale?“ I shout over to man on top of the RV. „I’ll me damned…“ „What is it?“ Amy asks next to me. „Stolen car is my guess“, Dale goes on watching through his binoculars. The siren is getting louder and you can clearly hear a car coming nearer. „What is going on?“ Mom suddenly asks next to me and Carl. She throws her arms protectively around Carl with Shane, oh wonder, appearing behind her. We see a bright red Dodge Challenger turning the corner and heading straight over to our camp. Its alarm system is going off like crazy, the fact that walkers haven’t appeared yet is nothing but a miracle. The Dodge comes to a halt and the driver opens the door. „Holy crap! Turn that damn thing off!“ Dale starts yelling at a smiling Glenn who turns out to be the driver. „I don’t know how!“ Glenn keeps on grinning like death isn’t literally around the corner waiting for any sound of life. Shane sprints towards the car and opens its hood. The alarm is off within seconds. „Where is Andrea? Is she okay?“ Amy keeps on shouting at Glenn asking for her sister’s whereabouts. „She’s fine! She’s fine!“ „Is she okay?“ „Yes. Yes, she is. Everybody is. Well,… Merle not so much…“ Glenn admits quietly. Somehow it seems like nobody heard that last bit of information because Shane starts yelling at Glenn for driving an alarm system on wheels all the way through the mountains and basically handing us to the walkers on a silver platter. Before their argument can get too heated though a moving truck stops behind the red Dodge. The truck’s engine gets killed and seconds later Morales and Andrea jump out of the truck. Morale’s wife and kids start running for their missed husband and father and Amy starts crying in Andrea’s arms. Moments like these are already a routine. Don’t get me wrong, I’m hella glad Morales and especially Andrea are back save and sound. Andrea really turned into basically a sister for me as well. She’s probably the first person I maybe ever opened up to. I told her about my dreams and aspirations which obviously vanished into thin air but still Andrea listened to them and didn’t judge me. She’s even the first person I’m somehow

comfortable with when it comes to talking about boys… it’s not like that’s a daily conversation between me and my mom, I mean have you seen her taste in men? „It’s good to see you“, I tell Andrea once her sister let go of her. „It’s good to see you, too!“ She says and throws her arms around me. Okay, I’m actually really, really glad she didn’t end up as walker food. „How did y’all got out there anyway?“ Shane breaks the cheerful reunion. „New guy. He got us out“, Glenn replies. „New guy?“ I ask, still in Andrea’s arms. „Oh yeah, he saved us…“ „Hey, helicopter boy!“, Morales shouts. „Come say hello!“ I turn towards the moving truck just when a the door of the driver’s side opens. My breath completely halts when a man closes the truck’s door and turns around. Brown short hair. Blue eyes. Slight stubble. An unmistakable police uniform. All the things I’ve seen before. All the things I’ve known my whole life. The sight I’ve been waiting for for five weeks. The sight I’ve been dreading for five weeks. I’m paralysed. I can’t move, hell, I don’t even feel my legs anymore. I can’t breathe. „Dad!“ I hear Carl screaming. My brother rushes past me, my mother on his heels. „Dad!“ Carl keeps on screaming and starts crying the second he reaches our father. Dad is tearing up, his arms close tightly around Carl. Mom stops a couple feet in front of them. She looks shocked. Happy tears are rolling down her cheeks as she kneels down into her husband’s arms. But I see through her. She might be beaming right now but I definitely haven’t missed the terrified glance in her eyes. Life has just taken another 180 degree turn. I’m still unable to move when my father lets go of Carl and mom and starts heading towards me. All I can do is stare at him. „Hi, peanut“, I hear my dad say before he throws his arms around me. For the first time since the dead started walking I feel tears rolling down my cheeks.

Monthly Update: January 2024

Hello everyone, it's Chattercap! Happy 2024! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday!

Sorry for the belated update, but...I was a little worn out after the New Year, I won't lie!

Gosh, where do I even begin when starting to talk about what I did in December...it was pretty hectic, to say the least. Luckily, I managed to complete the demo of The Deepwater Witch, and it's available now on itch! I also plan on releasing it on Steam in the future.

Now, as for what I needed to do to release that demo...

HURDLE ONE: FINISHING THE SCRIPT

The first thing that I had to do to release The Deepwater Witch was...finish the script? I had completed the first draft, but after receiving beta reader feedback, I found that there were additions that needed to be made. In the first few days of December, I wrote 4500 words, bringing the total of the script to 52k. After receiving additional edits, the script was finalized by December 15th.

HURDLE TWO: DOING THE ART

Heading into the second week of December, I only had a bit of art done. After completing the script, I had revisited the storyboards and basically made entirely new drafts of what art needed to be completed. At that point, I only had sprites and a couple of CG sketches.

From the beginning of December until the 20th, I worked almost exclusively on art, doing 24 backgrounds, 5 CGs, and an additional sprite during that timeframe. It was BUSY, but it was well worth it! I'm happy with how all of the assets turned out.

HURDLE THREE: ...EVERYTHING ELSE???

Heading into the last week of December, I was faced with the daunting task of...doing everything else. Up until this point, I was cool as a cucumber, but I started to panic a LITTLE here.

If you've been following my development up until this point, you'll know that I made the switch from Unity to Godot a couple of months ago. I had done...about 50% of the work that was needed on the engine before pausing to finish TDW's script. So not only did I have to implement core features (things as simple as saving and loading), but I also had to make sure I added polish - a nice looking GUI, animations, and the general polish that I want people to be able to expect from my games.

Here is a non-existent list of what I did from the 22nd of December onward:

BGM/SFX/VA functionality

Mute function

Flexible 2D animation controls

CG management (+ idles, animations)

Sprite management (+ idles, animations, positioning)

Dynamic dialogue layouts

Expression popups.

Credits screen.

Screen shake.

Story flags.

GUI functionality (page toggles, buttons, etc.)

Designed and implemented all GUI.

Save/Load.

Save screenshot function.

Chose and implemented BGM and SFX.

Annotated the script with BGM, SFX, story flag, sprite, CG, expression, and background tags.

Playtesting.

WHAT'S NEXT?

The next thing that you can expect from me is an updated version of MacOS version of The Deepwater Witch. I understand that there are some security issues with the current build (as Apple is very strict when it comes to unauthorized applications), and so I've decided to pay for an Apple Developer License. My application was already processed and approved, so I should be releasing that version in the next few days. You will still receive a pop-up notification alerting you that TDW is not from the App Store, but hopefully it lets you open it without any further hassle.

After that, I plan to release the full version of The Deepwater Witch. Almost everything is done besides some coding and art, and I expect to release it around late January/early February. Following that, I have two projects that I have planned for early spring!
