I did a cool thing in Hollow Knight (spoiler alert)

I beat the game without letting Myla get infected (yes it is actually possible) lol, I did it in just under 7 hours. Not speedrunner pace, of course, I just wanted to see if a casual player like myself could do it at all.

How, you ask? Myla first starts to show signs of infection when you defeat the Soul Master and gain the game’s downward spell (dive), and becomes fully hostile when you gain the Crystal Heart (cdash), so all you have to do is beat the game without ever doing those two things.

Beating the game without dive is fairly straightforward, but without cdash, things get complicated—especially considering that collecting Monomon, one of the Dreamers, requires either cdash or Isma’s Tear. And of course, the route to the Tear usually requires cdash.

But, you can get the Tear without cdash as long as you get Monarch Wings (double jump). Which also usually requires cdash.

Sooooo I did two pretty cool skips. First I did a shade skip to get past the spike room before Wings. That skip is pretty crazy on it’s own, so I had to make it a bit easier.

Typically, the skip requires you to get a nail upgrade in order to increase the health of your shade so that it can withstand a cast of Vengeful Spirit (fireball). You blast it with a fireball to get its attention, jump into it to take damage (for the slight height boost from getting hit), pogo it, dash into the ledge and wall jump up, and then you’ve made it.

I actually pulled it off this way once, but I died to the boss fight shortly after, so I decided to come back later. After some other stuff, I returned and was having some difficulty, so I got to thinking. With another nail upgrade or an extra mask, maybe the shade would have enough health to pogo it twice, for just a bit of extra height. I got another nail upgrade first, but that didn’t make a difference so I got an extra mask and finally! The shade had enough health.

I tried the skip again and to my surprise, I was still struggling. I was stumped, but YouTube finally helped me figure it out—I just went to mantis village and got the mark of pride. The extra length let me pogo the shade from farther away and gain even more height. I succeeded with this setup on the first try, actually. With the addition of the defenders crest charm, the later boss fight was easier, so I beat it too.

With Wings in the bag, there’s really only one other hard skip left. If you beat the Dung Defender, it unlocks the route to Ismas tear, which you typically access by cdashing through a tight tunnel of spikes in an elevator shaft (which I of course couldn’t do). However, I had mistakenly bought the dash slash skill earlier, so I was accidentally equipped to do the hardest skip I’ve done yet. After retrieving the 900 essence required to get dreamgate (mostly for my own sanity) and equipping dashmaster (maybe unnecessary but idk), I placed a gate near the skip and tried. And tried. And tried. And… I got it pretty quickly?

The skip involves charging your nail art, wall jumping to a precise height, dashing between the spikes, releasing the dash slash to stall in the air, pogoing the spikes beneath you, and dashing the rest of the distance to the safety of the landing. After your initial dash slash, everything must happen within the margin of error of a few frames. If you do not pogo immediately after the dash slash is over, you fall to the spikes below. If you do not dash immediately after the pogo hits, you bounce into the spikes above.

But honestly it’s pretty straightforward, if precise. I got it after 5 or 10 minutes of trying, much to my amazement.

The rest of the run was basically just like normal gameplay. Once you’ve completed those two skips, there’s no reason to hold back on your ability upgrades, so you can come at the Dreamers and THK with as much or as little upgrades as you like. As long as you avoid dive and cdash, that is.

Honestly if those two skips are the only thing between a player like me and saving Myla, it seems an injustice that Relyea’s YouTube video doesn’t say anything about it.
