They were refugees, the two of them, not of a country but of a moment in time to which they would never want to return but which would never let them go. They had to live inside and outside of it forever.

Nix isn’t an idiot. Yeah, it’s a closet, but it’s at least spacious and not horribly disgusting. On the other hand it is inside Sink’s office, but surely they can just ignore that part.

He shoves at Nixon’s shoulders with both his hands and for a moment Nixon panics, thinking that he’s finally crossed the line and he’ll be transferred to HQ or court-martialed before dawn. But Dick doesn’t leave, just pushes Nixon backwards, toward the middle of the foxhole and then he’s pulling Nixon back toward him again, all the way back, so that they’re lying down and Dick’s tongue is in his mouth again and they’re pressed together and it’s like he’s been waiting the whole war for this.

“I’d try and explain, but I ain't got much time and I’m not allowed to say much.” He looks around quickly then down at his hands where his fingers seem to be disappearing at the edges in little wisps of skin-colored smoke. Dick inhales sharply.

“That was a fine thing you did today, sir,” the trooper continues, tone determined. “A real good thing.” His smile and the way he fidgets is reminiscent of Nix’s earlier enthusiasm. “Someone noticed.”

Summary: Teacher!au featuring Dick as the principal, Nix as the head secretary who pines for him, Lip as the math teacher everyone loves, and Speirs as a badass English teacher with a crush.

If only sex was a thing between them, he wouldn’t ever need to have another girlfriend again. They’re friends, though, nothing more, and even best friends don’t think of each other like that. And that, right there, is the reason he kept Kathy around, the reason he needs to get another girlfriend soon, because the more time he spends fucking some chick, the less time he spends thinking about things he’s not supposed to, like Dick, all spread out on his bed, flushed from something other than spicy chicken, panting and needy, all for Nix.

“None at all,” Nix promises, and finishes his drink. At least when he goes to jail on Monday, he can go to jail knowing that he gave it a shot.

Just glad we’re not still under Sobel.” He’d always felt the weight of Sobel’s eyes on him, and wondered if he’d wanted Dick like that or not. That at least hadn’t been one of Sobel’s failings, and he’d never made an actual move on any of the omegas, so far as Dick had seen.

“Christ,” Nix said, momentarily distracted, “now there’s a thought.” He frowned, then pulled himself back on track. “Anyway, what I’m trying to say that is if it happens, and I’m not saying it will, there’s no sense getting someone to drive you into town just for that.”

“I don’t see much of an alternative,” Dick said.

Summary: Every night, come hell or high water, Dick Winters got down on his knees and thanked God for three things: his family’s continued good health, his own increasingly miraculous ability to make it through another day, and his stash of heat suppressants.

Nix burst into Dick’s billet the way he always did, as though it was his God-given right to be wherever Dick was at all times, as though drawn to him like a magnet.

Dick wondered if he had ever noticed that before, really, and if he had why hadn’t he noticed how absolutely maddening it was that Nix should simply flaunt himself in front of him this way, shirt hastily buttoned, pale neck shaded with stubble? And the smell of him, which was sweaty and sour, all alpha, albeit one in dire need of a shower? It was offensive to Dick. Dick would not stand for it.

What is the best death note fic you have ever read?

That's a very hard question, especially because defining "best" is a very tricky thing for me!

I'd probably go with Coexistence is Boredom by Sakurazukamori6 on ff.net (X) for a non AU fic, because I was there way back in 2008 when it was still being updated (the writer responded to my review very kindly once and you better believe I fangirled very hard lol). It was the first fic I ever read that made me see lawlight as a believable ship outside of just unresolved tension and mind games, and that really got me emotionally invested in things. The characterizations were so interesting and multi-faceted and endearing (honestly I think that this writer was writing L a lot like Alessandro Juliani voices him before the English dub was even out, which is super impressive to me). All the characters were written well (Light is especially on point too, like it's rare to find writers who can humanize him and write him like a real person and also not shy away from showing his manipulative clever scary side as well), and it had a lot of genuinely funny moments and sweetness and angsty drama too. It never fully got finished (does ANY long lawlight fic ever get finished?), a few bits of it haven't aged super well over the past 15ish years, and the prose isn't always the best prose I've ever read in my entire life, but it's still my fave, and I thought it held up pretty well when I re-read it again older out of curiosity and nostalgia!

For AU fics I'm going to have to say The Hinterland Doctrine by Halfpromise (X). It's almost like its own entirely separate universe that I've been able to talk to other fans about just as in-depth as canon, if not more so. It's not quite finished yet either, and so canon-divergent and long and AU that it's probably not something I'd recommend straight off the bat to fans just getting into Death Note fic. But it's definitely an extremely impressive piece of work that has all the hype it does around the fandom for good reason, imo

So, I read a lot of fic. And I’ve been wanting to make rec lists but a problem with reading a lot of fic is that after a while I tend to forget what happened and fics blend together in my mind RIP. But I want to start at least rec’ing my “recent reads” so that’s what this is: stuff I’ve read throughout this month. Okay, let's do this! Divided into two sections, canon-verse and AUs, and listed by word count.

About Five Times The Distance by KelpietheThundergod [ 70k, rated E ] - It's been months since Michael unexpectedly let Dean go, but he's still dealing with the mental and physical repercussions, some of which have turned out to be permanent. This case fic follows Dean and Cas as they develop their relationship and establish intimacy. Dean is so clingy. I cried a lot.

Darkest Roads verse by chaoticdean [ 63k, rated E ] - Dean and Cas go undercover as a couple going through therapy, in order to catch a monster that specifically targets couples dealing with issues, feeding on their distress, anger, and pain. Feelings left untold come to the surface, as they do.

It's safe to sleep inside his skin by kathscradle [ 13k, rated E ] - Dean just really wants to get inside Cas, like burrow under his ribs and make a home there. Close is never close enough, etc, etc.

The Council Of Charlie Bradbury by FallenAngelOfThursday [ 13k, rated T ] - Cas is back from the Empty, and Dean is struggling to accept that there's finally peace in the world. watching the camera footage of the dungeon scene on repeat probably isn't helping. a sparrow with broken wings by Anonymous [ 11k, rated T ] - Cas dies, and Dean stops eating, and he keeps on dreaming. Dean’s grief over Cas’s death manifests as a severe eating disorder. It’s heavy but it ends happy.

the boy without a home by FallenAngelOfThursday [ 3k, rated M ] - A short dean studies on identity and his quest to feel like he belongs.

3 hr 33 min (221 miles) by NightChanghes [ 3k, rated G ] - A little over a year ago, the Empty took Castiel. Nearly 5 months ago, it spit him back out. Dean is still mourning.

Chasing Feathers by junkyardheart [ 2k, rated G ] - The missing scene from Faith 1x12. Dean learns that he's dying, and ruminates on life, death and everything he wishes he had the time to fix. Faith!dean feels. Dying boy I love youu!

million reasons by casdoms [ 2k, rated M ] - oh dean’s mommy issues<3 anyway, set in s12, Dean’s feeling a lot about Mary coming back, and Cas comforts him.

Time for a gay wedding by fellshish [ 2k, rated M ] - thee 30k dean fic ! Is Cas gay? Clearly there’s only one way to find out. Dean proposes. Truly chaotic dean energy that only @fellshish can capture.

Sex Should Be Fun by things_renew_themselves [ 2k, rated M ] - Castiel and Dean speak about April and Castiel's sexual encounter. Years later, they speak about having sex with each other.

hug-o-meter by Emeraldcas [ 1k, rated G ] - Dean wants to hug Cas because of course he does, so maybe he'll just ask him and see what happens.

until my darkness goes by CherryBlossomSprings [ 1k, rated G ] - Dean has been sober before. He was clean for a whole year in purgatory. Not that he had that much choice, liquor is unsurprisingly hard to come by in monster heaven. And he managed a few weeks when The Mark was at its worst. He can do it again. No, he has to do it again.

A Cat in Hell’s Chance by thesebrokenwings [ 1k, rated T ] - Dean adopts a cat and Cas has a hard time adjusting. Fellas, are you ever jealous of the cat?!

Meathead by ValandraWrites [ 92k, rated E ] - Professor Cas and body-builder Dean meet at a gym. Dating and BDSM shenanigans ensue. **There’s one kink in the tags that might scare some off, it almost did for me but, it’s only in one scene and very minor. The story overall is really good.

sons and daughters by foolondahill17 [ 77k, rated M ] - the sequel to Silver Linings, so you’ll have to read that first. Silver Linings follows a year in the life of Dean Winchester. Dean’s bi: sexual and polar. He’s got a string of hospitalizations under his belt. He’s a felon. He’s got a secret.

A Judicious Application of Free Will by Annie D [ 57k, rated E ] - Dean lives the simple life in Lawrence, running the family business at Winchester Hardware. When Castiel moves into the neighborhood, they strike up a friendship that has the chance to become something more. put your money where your mouth is 'verse by kototyph [ 56k, rated E ] - A modern AU featuring Vegas, coconut bras, airplanes, Boston, cupcakes, prasinophobia, baseball, kittens, nor'easters, and men expressing deep emotion (in that order). Basically they get accidentally married, then fall in love.

On Air by wincechesters [ 21k, rated E ] - Cas and Dean are radio DJs and best friends who own a house together but are totally just friends. But for some reason, a lot of their listeners and even some of their friends and family seem to think that they’re secretly in some kind of relationship. Which is ridiculous. Until an ill-fated on air game of Truth or Dare turns everything upside down. Literally idiots in love.

Are @impala67 and @angelbeekeeper dating? by angelcaswinchester [ 3k, rated T ] - Mid-30s, single, with an obsession with vintage cars and cooking in his spare time, Dean wasn't prepared for anything to come out of signing up for a Tumblr account. But then Dean finds the blog @angelbeekeeper and maybe he develops a little crush on the blogger, Castiel. But there's no way Castiel would notice him, right?

As You Wish by lazenby (~19k words)

Princess Bride AU featuring a lot of bandom guys listening as Patrick tells them a story. 💜 I sorta love it a lot.

“I know,” Patrick says, clutching at Pete just as tightly. “I'm sorry. I wanted to tell you, you have to believe that. But I couldn't. Nobody could know Roberts had let me live. And I thought once I got enough money, I'd retire and find you.” He pauses, then quietly says, “I didn't think you'd get engaged. I didn't think you'd fall out of love with me.”

Pete pushes back, angry. “Might I remind you that you were dead?!” Pete says, throwing his hands in the air in frustration. “And it's not like I love her or anything!”

And Then the Aliens Killed Bill Murray by misspamela (~5k words)

Obviously a Groundhogs Day AU. Did you know I'm actually obsessed with that movie? And this fic...

Iron Man AU (of the first movie) that I have no biases about considering it was written by a friend. Her writing just is that good. I'm not kidding.

Patrick was decidedly not moping when Pete came home late. He was simply staring intently at his shoelaces. They were bright yellow and in sharp contrast to his red shoes.

“I don’t know what Joe told you,” Pete said when he found Patrick sitting on the kitchen counter, “but I wasn’t with anyone.” Patrick jumped down. “I don’t care, Mr. Wentz,” he muttered. “It’s not my business.”

Truman Show 'Verse by awkwardgturtle (~36k words)

Like it says, it's a Truman Show AU. Pete's whole life is a show, with all the angst that you could imagine.

Her hand flies to her chest in an overdramatic manner. “You didn’t hear? The eruption! Volcanic ash has been grounding planes for weeks!” “My friend Gabe just got home from Japan a week ago.” The blood drains from her face a split second before she laughs nervously. “Oh, those skies are clear, of course.” “Then we’ll go there,” Pete decides. Patrick adores sushi, plus there are plenty of beaches around to relax on and a beautiful city to explore. It sounds perfect. “No.”
