The Future
Time to establish what's going to happen from this point forwards.
The vast majority of you have been exceptionally patient this last year, and for that you have my deepest thanks. You've given me the time to not only write a book, but edit it, and send it off to literary agents, something I would have long given up on doing without the continued support of those who enjoy my writing.
Now that the book is off doing the rounds independently, it's time I got back to Myrk Mire.
Originally Myrk Mire was built in ChoiceScript, a scripting language created by the Choice of Games company. Choice of Games control what is done with their script, understandably, they own it. This does pose some restrictions. I can't, for example, release any paid material built using ChoiceScript unless it is directly through their publishing label. If I do publish under their label, I maintain IP or Intellectual Property Rights, however I also grant them the exclusive rights under perpetual license to publish the multiple choice game 'electronically'.
Tumblr media
Source: Choice of Games.com
As you can see from the outline above, they do make exceptions for stories published in non-competing formats, and for sequels, prequels, and spin-offs. However, traditional publishing houses might require stricter control over IP, distribution, and exclusivity. It will only become more and more complicated as things progress, and being locked into a perpetual license agreement of any nature is not a decision to make lightly.
As some of you may be sensing from the tone of all this so far, I'm going to be moving Myrk Mire away from Choice of Games and ChoiceScript, and into a new medium/format.
After tinkering, and trialling with a few alternatives, I've decided to go with Renpy. Renpy, while largely used for visual novel style games and stories, provides a very workable framework for interactive fiction, and is an Open Source script, it isn't beholden to publishing contracts, licence cost, or exclusivity.
I'm not going to be diving into transferring Myrk Mire right away, it's a huge piece of writing, in an entirely different scripting language, and as previously stated, there are a lot of changes I want to implement with the cast. Instead, I'm creating a trial story: One Háḟest Day. My Patrons have been aware of all this for about a month or so, and have already seen some previews.
One Háḟest Day takes place in Aldmirham before the events of Myrk Mire, around the time the Main Character and the Wanderers first arrived in town. The reader will have the choice to follow one of the romanceable characters through a single day, with opportunities to explore their lives and relationships before the Main Character and Child come along. I hope it will provide a proving ground for the changes that previously caused debate, and an opportunity for people to try out the new format and interface.
My plan is to distribute One Háḟest Day through Itch.io, working with their early access framework and voluntary payments for such as soon as one of the character routes is ready to play from beginning to end, updating regularly with the other characters as they too are completed, and with additional features as required. Once the full game is complete, I will release a separate full build with a set minimum price that can be discussed with the community as we move forwards.
At the second, I'm aiming for a web hosted format and a desktop/laptop downloadable format, with phone compatibility to come later down the line once things are stable.
I will post production updates and info when I can to tumblr, though a lot of what I'm doing now is very python coding heavy, so perhaps not that interesting?
I've included some screenshots below of very early development, featuring a Character Log and Word Log that I hope will allow readers to more easily navigate the story. I'm toying with the idea of having a Mysteries Log as well that will keep track of snippets of information gleaned from each character's route, but that can be a tinkering feature for now.
Let me know your thoughts, concerns, or excitement, though do keep all messages objective and polite.

I just wanna scream into the sky about my MyrkMire MC and child for a hot minute.

Edda Barlow, roughly thirty and the aunt to Luella Barlow-- who calls her “mama” because she really is the only mother she knows. I have it that it has always been just the two of them until they came to this town— now potential LIs for Edda are Louis and Keldan.

Marjorie "Maggie" Dela Cruz and Thomas Ryan "Wayne" Dela Cruz, my MCs for Myrk Mire!
If Erda could hear, she would be cackling right now. I love her cackles so much. 😄
So, I've wanted to make some fanart for Myrk Mire (@catt-nuevenor) for quite a while now. It also just came to me recently that I never made a drawing of Wayne (or Rosie) with Maggie before, so thankfully I have the perfect excuse…
I'm very happy with how this turned out, so I hope you like it! 😊Although I realized too late that their outfits might be a little anachronistic, sooo let's just say that they came to The Mire in a plot hole. 😉
Some fun facts and headcanons:
Maggie is still hopeful that she'll find Marrin, but she can't deny that she's interested in her friend Abelyn.
Wayne still misses his missing father (he keeps a portrait of him in his locket), although he doesn't see a problem with having two dads.
Maggie and Wayne are charm and trinket crafters. Wayne loves making trinkets, and he keeps a collection of those he successfully made himself as keychains for his bag (with some help from Maggie, of course). She was injured in the marsh after rescuing Keldan, while they were looking for crafting materials.
Maggie would rather let Wayne do his own thing, but she's had to be a little more strict (well, go along with his adventures) because he's too silly and playful for his own good.
Wayne is a total mama's boy, but he has grown close enough to his mommy's friends that he doesn't bother hiding it anymore.
Maggie still carries Wayne from time to time, but only because she knows she won't be able to do it anymore soon.
Wayne loves singing and always asks his mommy to sing him a lullaby before going to bed (after drinking some milk).
Wayne is a leap day baby and likes to tell people that he's only 1 and 3/4 years old.
Wayne wishes that he has a little sister.
Anyway, Happy Halloween! 🎃

I made an MC for MyrkMire by @myrk-mire and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that she is the best one I've made so far.

The vaccine has temporarily rendered me achy and useless so I spent the day playing and fanperson-ing over the highly addictive Myrk Mire by @myrk-mire which naturally led to whiling away on artbreeder crafting the most perfectly asymmetrical MC I could manage, as is my wont.
And so here we have Dylan Rhydderch, scrivener, single ren to little Llyr (after their mam, Marryn, R-U-N-O-F-T, alas), house guest of the inimitable Mouse, and fisher of nokken? laminak? zin? kelpie? "men". Their somewhat wonky features add up to a fairly pleasing visage, imo, and this might be the late hour speaking, but I swear their eyes follow you...
Anyway, Dylan is my MC across all routes, starting with Ana and Leila, of course. And then the Ks, I think, because they're kind of scary and that can be kind of fun.

Changes to the Main Character - Myrk Mire
Brace yourselves kids, this is going to be a fair amount to go through. While I don't think I'm giving away any big story spoilers, do treat reading more with some caution if you want to experience the story completely blind. And do also bear in mind that none of these changes are implemented yet and won't be for some time. If you like the story as is, by all means go and enjoy it. I'll be uploading a new demo, not replacing the old one, when it's ready.
All that out the way, let's talk choice fiction MC's and their difficulties in fixed narrative cannon.
Let's get this out the way first and foremost. You will still be able to customise your Main Character and their offspring in all the ways you can currently. I'm not removing any of that choice from you. You'll also be able to pick who your Main Character becomes attached to. However, this is where things will need to change a bit.
Previously our romantic options were all single and ready to mingle and remained so until the player directed their Main Character into a relationship with them. Open season, so to speak. What will now (future demo) take place is the Main Character will begin early to favour one of the eight relationship (romantic or platonic) options, and as said relationship grows, the remaining seven will begin their own journeys with other characters.
Which other characters? Well, here's where the real fun begins.
---
Old narrative:
A lone wanderer, with their offspring/dependent, stumbles into Aldmirham in pursuit of work and lodging for the winter.
New narrative:
A small group of wanderers, with their offspring/dependents, stumble into Aldmirham in pursuit of work and lodging for the winter.
---
Our RO's aren't the only ones gaining 'siblings'.
There'll be five adult characters trundling their way into Aldmirham in the hafest of 822 DT, and the beginning of the story will take place at the very start of winter, through to blostma (spring).
The Main Character will be one of these five adults, and their dependent will be one of the three children with them.
Some of you may have noticed a slight mathematical flaw in this. I have eight relationship options and five new folks. Well, you don't need to form romantic relationships to live a happy and fulfilling life, and neither do the RO's.
Let's get a run-down on our travelling group, shall we?
Ænidym Bécencnol (NB) - An old friend of Marrin/Marryn/Marren and Sumara (previously Zephora), they joined shortly after the events that led to the MC first travelling with the group (what ever those events may be), in the town of Þeófcrecca on the western shore of Crawshire. They're a carpenter by trade, apprenticing with a shipwright in the town. They're supportive, grounded, and often the voice of reason when their companions need a reminder of common sense.
Ehwan Bécencnol (M) - Ænidym's young cousin, orphaned after his mother drowned in an accident out at sea while fishing. He's quiet, distrustful of strangers, and has a deep and abiding fear of deep water. He's a year or so older than the MC's child and is obsessively protective of them.
Azgoá Ménastaþs (F) - Orignally from the realm of Þinda, she took apprenticeship with the iron smiths of Crawburh before meeting up with the others, and deciding to travel east with them, hoping to learn from the smithing guilds in the rest of the realm. Others often think she has a funny accent, and she delights in teaching the children foul comebacks in her native tongue.
Ielfetu Wischam (M) - A basket weaver by trade, Ielfetu joined the group with his daughter, Basjá, after Basjá's mother became violent towards them both. He's good at what he does, but struggles to see that, relying on his new friends and confidants to pick him up and set him on his feet. Originally from the smaller, tamer marshes of Wýscanwisc, he's comfortable in the Mire, and hopes the group will stay after the winter is through.
Basjá Wischam (F) - Ielfetu's daughter, she's the youngest of the group's children, though only by a few months. Tall for her age, and bold, she's often chosen as the leader among the children, though her overconfidence often leads them all into trouble. She's anxious about her father, often feeling like she has to protect him from those who might bully him or push him around, this well-meaning support rarely ends well.
Aranor Halshlinc (M) - The newest member of the group, he first joined them when he was still legally a child, seeking to escape a bad situation he'd found himself in, with muddy legal ramifications. He's spent every day since this incident trying to make it up to them, taking on far more dog's body work than he should, often exhausting himself. He has a good heart, but a limited appreciation for long term consequences, and his past is never far behind him.
Main Character (?) -
Main Character's Child (?) -
Now, I'm not telling you who ends up connecting with who, that'd be spoilers.
So this is our crew of travelling misfits, here's to the shenanigans when they meet our resident band of misfits in Aldmirham! The town won't know what's hit it.
Why do this? Well, it means when the story of Myrk Mire touches the fixed narrative story, I have more points to weave connections with, more people to mention or name-drop, and tbh more people to hide the MC behind without having to strongly define who they are. I'm not going to be able to keep the MC ambiguous forever, but I hope I can create a strong enough sense of community within the story that readers still feeling comfortable when the MC of Myrk Mire does make their eventual appearance because the family around them remains the same.
Anywho, let me know what you think about our new travelling companions, and feel free to ask questions about them. Spoiler limiting, I'll answer as best I can.

Location Change
Right, quick update on the stories. I'm currently on my final read through before submission on the fixed narrative story. Hopefully I'll be sending it off to literary agents within the month.
That means more and more of my brain is tip-toeing its way back to Myrk Mire, and it's had some thoughts.
I don't really consider them spoilers, but treat this as a soft warning for story content.
As you may recall, I want the story of Myrk Mire to be 100% cannon with the fixed narrative story, this presents certain problems I didn't have to contemplate in the previous iteration of the story or characters. Previously you were able to pick the genders of the romantic interests and for those choices to have rather large implications for the continuing narrative. I still want to give folks that choice, but, it means I have eight characters to integrate instead of four.
Let's have a quick refresher:
Previously:
Peyton (M) or Peidyn (F)
Anadora (F) or Abelyn (M)
Louis (M) or Leila (F)
Kelda (F) or Keldan (M)
New Characters:
Plehtin (M) and Pursa (F) Starling, cousins.
Anadora (F) and Abjalin (M) Webja, siblings born roughly seven months apart.
Leiz (M) and Leila (F) Fyls, twins.
Cwylla (F) and Celd (M), friends.
Right, with that lot out in the open, don't you think the old setting of the lodging house would get a touch, cramped with all these folks crammed inside? Plus, of course, our protagonist and their offspring. Speaking of which, I have another post to write-up about the protagonist. Or rather protagonists...
Anywho, my thought is this: rather than setting the main events in the lodging house, I'd set them in the tavern/pub instead. Mawkin's Watch for those who need the prompt. Previously this was run by Myne (Myrna), cousin to the main character's landlord/lady. I'm now planning for it to be a joint Starling enterprise between Myne, Plehtin, and Pursa, with rooms attached for rent. The Fyl siblings, the main character and littlun, and our eventual swampy lurkers, can all pile into said rooms, while the Webja siblings can live with Erda just across the marketplace but spend all their free time with the folks in the tavern. Keeps the cosy atmosphere without the elbowing for space, and helps me explain why the Starlings are all under one roof all the time without contrivance.
More details on storylines and some pronunciation help on the new names can be found in this post:
Intertwining Fictions
Now to figure out the post about the MC... eeep.

I have just finished play Mirk Mire and yes, I love it sooooo much. The vibe it gives me is amazing and I find myself captivated by every single word. Though somehow I have wished that when choosing the anchor binding me to the world, there is Marrin there XD I mean, I chose him as “missing” and I wish I could have chosen Marrin out of nowhere as if the partner is still alive and another anchor keeping me to the world is hoping for a day he came back. (Just typical me default my MC to be super loyal for their partner if there were one)
Oooh, I haven't had to give the spoilers answer in a while. Kind of nice to brush the dust off the old routines.
Ahem...
Spoilers.
There are reasons you cannot have Marrin/Marren/Marryn as an anchor.
Anywho, so glad you like the demo and the writing within. I'm on the last few stages of editing my fixed narrative traditional story now, and once that is out on submission I'll go back to Myrk Mire and do some proper dusting and access where it goes from here.

Heyyyyyy just found Myrk Mire and honestly I am kind of obsessed. It's intriguing and intricate and so goddamn detailed with the little POVs. It's alooot of writing for 2 chapters! You are insanely talented. My question I suppose is it something you are still working on or are you gonna break my heart here?! 👀
---
It's been more than a full year, can we get any heads up on Myrk myre? I was convinced it was canceled
---
Glad you've enjoyed what there is of Myrk Mire to enjoy!
The matter really does come down to what your ask highlighted, it's a heck of a lot of writing.
The current demo is over 401,314 words.
For comparison, A Game of Thrones is 292,727 words.
That is not to say Myrk Mire is cancelled.
I just want to highlight how much the medium of choice fiction swallows time and effort on balance with other mediums.
As it stands, I'm in the (hopefully) closing stages of editing a linear fiction story set in the same universe as Myrk Mire, whose events directly lead into and effect the characters and story with which you are all familiar.
My hope is to put this story out on submission through traditional publishing. What happens after that largely depends on how well the submission goes.
I want to tell the Myrk Mire story in full. I'm really proud of it, and desperately fond of the characters. For now though, they've all been set aside to work on the linear story. That's more likely to be able in some small way to support the writing of Myrk Mire than if things were the other way around.
In the meantime, the Tumblr blog is sporadically being used to share my research shenanigans, occasional story teases, and miscellaneous obsessions. I hope they prove entertaining. Thank you all for your patience. One day, hopefully soon, I'll be able to reward it.

That's fun! I totes support the change! Plus the overall appearance looks like something that can be seen in a marsh, like an abandoned book but clearly cherished? Idk how to best describe it lol
I've been patient in waiting for an update but wow the dev. log is shocking that it makes me even more willing to wait 🙌🙌
Looking forward to it, thank you!!!
Thank you for your support!
I'm very glad the dev logs have rendered this much excitement!
Like I said, the book's an old asset I've had collecting digital dust for some time now.
Tumblr media
An old attempt at putting together a bestiary for tumblr. Might give it a bit more weathering once the core of the story is in place, substance before making things pretty. I've got quite a few bits and pieces like this I've made over the years that could be integrated. Pretty sure I have a spooky lamp somewhere...
And before I forget, your patience is very much appreciated.

Preview of the Pre-Alpha Build of the game. Sorry about the video quality. Turns out, my default video trimming software is pretty rubbish. Anyway, let me know what you all think of the format, especially the readability of the font. I'd like to make this as accessible as possible. Not entirely happy with that logo… but it'll do for now.

In dev news:
Tumblr media
I've mostly got this behaving itself now. ¬¬ mostly...
But I wondered if folks would be interested to see what this line looks like code side:
Tumblr media
The mode and timings are divided from the text with a _, while text is sectioned off to allow for multiple timings and behaviours using a |.
I've also just patched in a few extra lines which allows me to write like this:
Tumblr media
Note the 'a' instead of the previous instance of a mode_timing bit. This is auto behaviour, it takes the mode and the individual character or word timing from the previous section, allowing me to print the text at the same rate, but add pauses for extra effect.
Cross all available appendages that this keeps behaving itself going forward...

I'm still bummed about the story changes nuking the best parts of the story
Changes that you have not seen and do not directly know the consequences of in an unfinished demo property that was by its nature a work in progress and subject to change.
Part of the reason I'm working on the One Hærḟest Day story ahead of returning directly to Myrk Mire is to give readers the opportunity to explore the changes in a smaller setting and get to know the new faces.
If what you've heard so far really puts you off the story, you're entitled to your own opinion, there are plenty of other forms of interactive story for you to engage with out there, and I wish you the best of luck in finding something that suits you.
If you're on the fence, I advise you wait until you have material with which you actively judge the changes rather than speculate what effects they will or will not have on the story.
