Now for some fanfic recs for every day of the fest (disclaimer: I truly loved every single fic I read for the fest and if asked, I am more than happy to give out links to every single one of them)

Day 1: First Fandoms: Dedicated To... by MissHyperbole (MyScene Dolls, G, 1,173 words, Barbie/River)

"The bass player dedicated a song to me! But then we saw him giving his number to another girl."

Barbie and River have a moment at the 11c gig.

I adored this fic so much, it felt exactly like reading a MyScene webisode. The River/Barbie plotline was also my fave from the CD-ROM game and this just brought me back to that game quest with Barbie tying that red string around her finger and tracking down dog tags.

Day 2: Bookmark Day: The Poet's House by spacewitchbot (Romance Is A Bonus Book, E, 4,467 words, Cha Eunho/Kang Dani)

Cha Eun-ho slid a tiny piece of paper across the table to Dan-i. She unfolded it and read the note. “Marry me, Kang Dan-i,” he’d written.

She looked up at him with a smirk and shook her head, just enough for him to see. Nearly everyone had filed out of the room. He smiled and turned away, saying nothing more. But, he noticed as he glanced back, she hadn’t crumpled the paper. She folded the note neatly and tucked it in her notebook.

This fic felt so much like watching the drama. If you finished the drama and wanted to settle into the post canon world a bit before re-watching then this is the fic for you. The first chapter especially!! All of the Gyeroo employees together was just ahhh!!! so so so much like their interactions on screen

Day 3: Old Favorites: An Unexpected Attachment by umbrafix (Sense and Sensibility, G, 11,532 words, Colonel Brandon/Elinor Dashwood)

While Marianne was ill at Cleveland, Colonel Brandon was everything that was kind and attentive to Elinor.

Re-reading this fic (and commenting on it finally after reading it two years ago at least when I first finished S&S, eek!) reminded me of how much I loved Colonel Brandon and Elinor and how much I need more of them all the damn time. umbrafix's writing style pairs perfectly with Austen's and this fic was so good and scratched all the right places in my brain that if S&S had played out like this fic then maybe it would top Northanger Abbey as my fave Austen

Day 4: Fandom Curiosity: Dark But Just A Game by linnycarol (Succession, E, 3,952 words, Gerri Kellman/Roman "Romulus" Roy)

Gerri spends Fourth of July weekend with the Roy family and sparks fly between her and Roman.

This fic accomplished the goal of fandom curiosity and seeing Succession on my dash and making me finally want to watch the show. It was such a well done fic with spice and tenderness and realism. I can't wait to watch Succession, finish Succession, and then go back and read this fic with the knowledge of the canon

Day 5: Rec A Fic aka I Used This As A Free Day: party of one (party of none) by uncut (deadwine) (Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food, G, 540 words, Yoon Jinah)

Jinah searches for everything the day takes away from her in the night.

This fic was a treat for the senses. Every detail brought me into Jinah's world alongside her. It was an excellent character introspection that was so beautiful and poignant to read. If you have yet to watch Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food AKA Something In The Rain if you're searching for it on Netflix, I highly highly recommend reading this fic before watching because it captures Jinah's feelings at the start of the show so well.

I really liked My Scene as a kid. I don't have any of the dolls but I'd like to collect a couple. The movies are still fine now (aside from that...unfortunate cameo in the Hollywood movie) but I kind of have to be in the mood to watch them (sidenote: I adore all of the soundtracks). Kid me was super jealous of their glamorous teen lifestyle and having a bunch of friends so they made me a little sad. But I also appreciate they they mostly wrote the girls realistically. They supported each other, but still had fights and secrets and petty drama. They were like real teenagers.

Also can I rant about Madison for a sec? Okay thanks

Anyone who thinks Madison was actually trying to steal River in Jammin' in Jamaica did not watch the freaking movie. Madison was Urban Desire's songwriter. She was there FOR WORK. They were all there for WORK! A COMPETITION! Barbie got jealous over literally nothing. She, Chelsea, and Nolee just invited themselves on that trip KNOWING the band had a major record deal on the line. Even if they weren't always doing band stuff, it had to be their first priority. For River and Madison specifically, that meant coming up with fresh ideas and improve their stuff over and over to make sure the band was at their best. Barbie took everything out of context and psyched herself into the idea that River would prefer Madison as a girlfriend just because he wouldn't pay attention to her at all points.

Furthermore, Madison even admits later in the movie that she knew Barbie was feeling weird but didn't say anything because she loved the idea of this trip being only about music and the competition. But then Barbie (and Chelsea and Nolee) came along and took some of that focus away. Madison just wanted to ignore it and hold onto to the competition stuff, even at the expense of Barbie's time with River. AND SHE APOLOGIZED FOR IT. She didn't even wait for Barbie to apologize first; she recognized that she ignored Barbie's feelings and took initiative.

Barbie was so freaking stupid in Jammin in Jamaica. Like, not as bad as some other depictions (at least she's got a fleshed out personality), but it can be hard to watch her just not use her brain. And if you factor in the Hangin' Out prequel webisodes, then she had River had JUST gotten together right before the opening of the movie. She seriously thought her boyfriend of like a few days was cheating with her best friend. And before anyone says "maybe they aren't canon" they very clearly are. Chelsea even mentions she's upset that Delancy got to go to Jamaica with their friends after having just met them.

Well, at least Barbie makes up for it by the end.

Bundle

The re-bought Custom with bundle arrived today. The seller noticed it was me because she said 'glad you rebought the witch as the person who asked for it no longer wants her' which isn't exactly enlightening but I don't feel like prying further at this point.

Opened the package with my sis who promptly had an asthma attack from cat hair/dander so I hand-washed the clothes and washed down each doll thoroughly.

* Rerooted WITCH Mal got back her original body * Beach "Curvy Karl" has a hollow body with a double neck knob which pissed me off so I cut off the top and glass nail file sanded it to avoid any damage when rebodying, her eyes and brows are on straight and un-blurred but her lips are about 1mm to the right and a smidge too low. The hair is non glued, thin in patches and about 1cm shorter around the edges than the middle...for a layered look? Saran so I can always customize her. Not exactly inspired by the face.

Asian Ken Boho Hip #115 got an acetone clean up to remove any spots of grey/black from his face and tidy his hairline but he's otherwise perfect. Shame I don't collect ken, he's cute if a little bland/pixelated in the eyes. Love that wide low nose. We debated whether it was east asian enough for his glasses to have trouble staying up and concluded that he'd be an authentic “every five minutes glasses adjuster”.

Mulan was an unexpected addition, her paint was peeling off so it occurred to me that I might be able to get a Mulan minus the ceremonial facepaint without having to repaint her, this proved a time consuming, painstaking endeavour that looks a lot like reverse vitiligo. LOL. I'll still need to redo her brows and seal her eyes + blushed lips. I'll also need to do a proper pruning of her hair as she was wearing an elastic band that melted quite a bit of the hair around it.

The GG is a 2000 Princess Bride that makes a "magical" noise with a push of the button or if you move her arm. The face does nothing for me, she's got a small blue mark on her leg that should be bleached out in 2-3 days.

The MyScene boy is River, he had marks that got a good magic eraser scrub to remove as the bod is all hard plastic. I think he's had his hair cut on top, it's way too thin. I used to do Myscene boy reroots for a client who collected them and they take quite a while as they are thickly rooted and have BIG heads. I don't really know what to do, he's a choppy mess on top and at the back, don't know if it's worth putting in the time.

He'd need a full reroot as he's currently got dgkk not saran. Flock maybe? My last full reroot put on ebay (a Sparkle Eyes Barbie gradient white to pink reroot) sold for a grand total of 8€ after fees. I'm so un-motivated if I don't have a specific idea in mind. Side note: that gangly ken/myscene body will never not be funny: great belly articulation but a head that is lopsided if you turn it ...and those hands T_T!

Also hilarious, this guy is restrung (nice and tight btw) with glitter gold elastic!

Finally, LIV Alexis got her body back (she was one of mine that I swapped with the beach Alexis that came with the WITCH who wasn't a good enough skintone match)

The question is where to go from now? Guess I can sell the 2 Livs, the Asian Ken, the Princess Bride. Curvy Karl needs new lips as does Mulan who also needs brows and her eyes sealing (the whole face is pasted onto a cream paint base) and i'm unsure of my repainting skills. I don't have dgkk to repair Mulan's missing plugs and River is drawing a big brain blank. Then there's the WITCH reroot, the originals are expensive but is that because their characters mean a lot to viewers of the cartoon? It’s a rather niche item.

Maybe I need to stop overthinking for today.

Thinking of my scene dolls again and I remembered how much I liked the myscene dolls over barbie, movie wise barbie was unmatched

And I suddenly remembered that I only owned one myscene movie/special and it was the Jammin' in Jamaica one though I mean I was a young black girl obsessed with Maddison and came from a Jamaican family what else was going to happen and the only thing I remember about it was that it had the worst Jamaican accents and it made me hate myscene barbie with a passion and I low-key wanna rewatch the movie to remember why

EDIT: Anyway Barbie was an oversensitive mess this entire movie who instead of supporting her bf and friends decided to overthink everything despite being constantly reassured that there was nothing sketchy going on

Essentially Barbie's boyfriend River and his band win a trip to Jamaica to participate in a battle of the band's for a record deal. Barbie and the other girls feel left out that the band is off on vacation with Madison and Delancey. So they save up and go surprise them. Then Barbie proceeds to mope the whole movie cuz she feels left out even though she crashed what is essentially a work trip. And gets upset everytime River and Madison start talking music together ( even though Madison is the songwriter and River is the lead vocalist) like they're here for work why are you getting upset he's not gonna bail on practice for you. The breaking point is when she sees them embrace each other so of course she runs off dramatically (costing them their slot in the competition since they miss tech check trying to find her and explain) and to make it even stupider they've both explained they're just friends and this isn't even the first damn time they've hugged like she's seen them hug before. Then when Madison tries to apologize (unnecessarily if you ask me) Barbie gets all defensive like oh I thought we were friends and at the crescendo of stupidness is this exchange

Madison: "I didn't do anything wrong!"

Barbie: "Didn't you though"

Madison: "guess I did 🤔"

Like what kinda dumbassery

Whatever Madison apologizes, Barbie makes up a plan to get them noticed by the producer outside of the contest, they get signed, happy end.

Anyway I'm low-key convinced that it was an open relationship with the three because they're all pretty touchy with each other and Barbie just started feeling left out cuz she couldn't come or relate to their music talk. Also cuz there's alot of sketchy screenshots I took from the beginning when they win the trip, like his hand was constantly near Madison’s hip and this is the damn opening scene like Barbie isnt even jelly yet

and Madison seems to constanly have her hand on his chest (Barbie is like right behind them in this scene too. Just aggresively dancing and looking at them with blank eyes)
