Cairo: sounds like you got a mystery novel in the works
Y/N: I’m literally trying to solve a real life murder
Cairo: that’s just set dressing. I can’t wait to see the twists and turns in your story
Y/N: aren’t you worried?
Cairo: just come back to me, okay?
She gets up on her knees and undoes one of her buttons…
Cairo: I need you to come back
Y/N: yes ma’am
The two share a kiss

How to Write Captivating Mystery Plots
Tips for mastering the art of suspense in your storytelling.
Add physical and psychological clues in the first act.
Give enough information about the victim to make sure your readers will want justice for them.
Introduce a motif or symbol early on that will appear again during the conclusion.
Introduce several false suspects within the first act.
In the second act, try to steer the investigation toward a false conclusion.
Set up red herrings at the start of the second act.
When your detective has almost solved the crime, create a false sense of success where they feel like a piece of the puzzle is missing.
Hope this helps give you a bit of a start with your mystery writing!

A Grave Robbery
My friend Deanna has a new mystery book out next week, the next in her Veronica Speedwell series! If you haven't read them yet, do. They're excellent--great pacing, excellent human, and perfect tension. And no, I'm not just saying that because she's my friend.
I was a certainly a fan first, quite by chance. I received her first Julia Grey novel as a gift, ended up following her blog, then we emailed for a while, and now she is one of my dearest humans.
And here is a photo of D and me, from back when I had my original hair color, in NYC. (Did I Marilyn that day, twice? Yes.) That was one of my favorite days, ever.

Enjoy this excerpt from Divabetic's 10th Annual Mystery podcast, Murder Plain As Vanilla, streaming on Spotify, iTunes, and BlogTalkRadio. Our mystery podcast isn't only for mystery lovers. It's a fun way to learn about diabetes and self-care. In between colorful characters, crazy adventures, and mysterious surroundings, we pack health and wellness tips that can help you take charge of your diabetes. We also hope to encourage you to think like a detective the next time you experience unexpected blood sugar fluctuations. Search for clues, collect data, talk to witnesses, and bring your ideas to the authorities (healthcare collaborators) for solutions. A team approach to managing your diabetes isn't a bad idea either. Here's a short synopsis: When Mr. Divabetic's arch-nemesis baking sensation Renata Whisk calls, offering a chance to participate in the Visions of Vanilla baking competition, he can't refuse. It's an invitation to compete against culinary giants Best-Selling Cookbook Author Lily Frost, Green Thumb Gourment, Hazel Honeywell, and the Cannoli Countess and, most importantly, a chance to pay back his debt owed to his mother. But before Max's hands touch flour, he discovers the dead body of the Vanilla King of Madagascar. As luck has it, Max is the last person to see the Vanilla King alive. To prove his innocence, he enlists his team, USA Today's best-selling author Tonya Kappes, health educator MaryAnn Nicolay MEd, NDTR, and his mother, Mama Rose Marie. But when another baker's dead body is found near Max's station, even his mother tastes a recipe for disaster. Now, armed with only Renata Whisk's Puffed Pastry recipe, a rolling pin, and his team's expertise in solving murders and dispersing diabetes health information, Max has no choice but to solve the mystery or at least die trying. Co-Starring Lorraine Brooks, Catherine Schuller, Dave Jones, Seveda Williams, and Amparo Peterkin. Script Editor Wendy Radford. Producer, Leisa Chester Weir. Music from the Broadway Cast albums of Anything Goes courtesy of SONY Music.

Making Mysteries Made Simple
No matter what your preferred writing genre is, there will always be an element of mystery. Who is secretly working for the magical Big Bad, how do we stop the robots, does he actually like me back, how will we escape this prison, where will these wacky hijinks take us, etc. A part of the fun of a story is the not knowing, the mystery of it all.
As someone who enjoys mystery in what I read, naturally, I have always wanted to include it in my writing. But at the beginning, it was very difficult for me! How could I concoct a twist clever enough to keep my readers on the edge of their seats? How do I throw in enough red herrings to distract from the obvious reveal without being annoying? How do I come up with an ingenious puzzle for the audience without falling into -what a fellow zine contributor once described as- “BBC Sherlock levels of bullshit twistery?”
The answer to writing a mystery hit me one day, and it’s so simple it made me feel stupid. So if you’re having trouble coming up with the most brilliant mystery that isn’t so far-fetched that it pisses off the audience, here’s what helped me in my approach to writing mystery into a story:
A mystery is an event happening from the perspective of someone who does not know how or why it happened.
Sounds obvious, right? But really consider that. It’s up to the writer to figure out the end of the mystery (the reveal of how/why the event happened) first. Even if the reveal of the how/why event does not seem SO exciting to you, that’s just because you know how/why it happened from the start. This helps to avoid unnecessary and -if I may be so bold humhum- STUPID twist endings that just leave the audience wondering why all the build up led to that.
This may not seem like the mind blowing advice you’re looking for, but I promise it’ll help simplify your process if you keep it in perspective!

PART ONE    -We both know,  no one will ever  believe you - he said, lifting his arms up.
-One day they will-she said. More to convince herself, that all the time she spent studying this case wasn’t a waste of time, rather than to threaten him.
- You’re so beautiful, yet so naive.
-And you’re so handsome, yet so cruel.
Her hold on the gun tightened. Still, he didn’t seem to notice the weapon aimed centrally at his chest. And he knew if she chose to shoot, the bullet would go straight through him. She never missed, and for him that was the whole fun of it.
-How many times you have to shoot me to understand.-he took a few steps forward, her muscles tensed but she didn’t dare to step back.- You can’t kill me- big smile showed perfectly white teeth.
He could have played in an advertisement for toothpaste, she thought, if only 2 of his teeth weren’t sharp enough to kill, and occasionally covered in blood.
But he was right. Even if she’ll shoot him, it won’t make him admit to his crimes, However since she  didn’t figure out a way to catch him, she decided to make his life unbearable. Maybe then, when he’ll be fed up with her tries, he’ll give up.
However he didn’t seem to be anywhere close to discouragement.  He took another step forward, now being so close he could hear her heartbeat speed up.
-You know, i really enjoy these little games of yours-his hand reached to push the loose strand of her hair away from her face. Lowering his hand, he brushed it against the skin on her neck, causing shivers to run down her spine.
-One day you will make a mistake, and then I'll be the first to catch you and put you into prison- her eyes were boring through his. In response he only smirked.
-Are you jealous, somebody else might catch me, darling?- his smile widened- Don’t worry, I won’t let anyone else do that. Only you will have this privilege.
Before she could even respond, he already wasn’t there. And as much as she hated him, she had to admit his vows make her more peaceful.

Elements of Mystery & Suspense Writing
Try adding these story elements to your writing project to heighten tension.
THE PLOT TWIST
Designed to surprise your readers, they can heighten tension by making initial obstacles worse. Keep them at a minimum!
2. THE CLIFFHANGER
Cliffhangers build anticipation by raising a question that must be answered by the reader. Always follow through on your cliffhangers!
3. THE RED HERRING
A red herring occurs when your readers follow the wrong thread designed to mislead them away from a clue. Try to use no more than three in your novel!
4. THE FALSE SUSPECTS
Give your suspects secrets to keep their motives hidden. To cultivate your suspects use means, motive, and opportunity. Keep in mind they will have one or two of these, but not all three...unless they’re the villain!
5. THE TIMELINE
Utilize timelines to create a realistic sequence of events to tie your mystery together. They can be alibi timelines, clues to be discovered, or more!
