Cover art by @anyaboz Hearthbound is a 10-episode musical audio drama and a queer reimagining of the Odyssey. Ride with us through the ridges and the ruins of the Great Basin, as we follow Odessa in a scrappy old van, rattling along the Loneliest Road in America back to Penelope.
Embracing the spirit of hopepunk and found family, Hearthbound explores what it means to return to a place different from when you left it and whether it's worth returning at all. We've got campfire songs and sea shanties and highly specific bird call cues.
We're pretty sure you'll like this if you like Vienna Teng, Station Eleven, Kentucky Route Zero, or hot butches. If this sounds like your jam, you can sign up for our newsletter on our website to get the latest on a premiere date!

My dealer: got some straight gas. This strain is called “Camlann”, you’ll be zonked out of your gourd.
Me: yeah, whatever. I don’t feel shit.
5 mins later: dude I swear that was Twrch Trwyth.
My buddy Dai, pacing: Gwaine is lying to us
Anyway go listen to Camlann. Post-apocalyptic queer found family audio drama based on Arthuriana and Welsh mythology. Great music too.

I'm sorry but can we talk about Arthur's similarities to Faust???
*Spoiler warning for up to ep31*
For those who don't know German folklore/ literature, Faust follows the tale of a depressed and suicidal man who makes a deal with the devil to fufill his desire for knowledge. Now despite us knowing how Arthur's hunger for information has put his and John's survival at risk on multiple ocasions, There's so many parallels!
Faust makes a deal with a demon, not to concerned with the price. Arthur also makes a deal with a demon (kayne) not to concerned of the price.
Faust seduce a beautiful and innocent young woman, usually named Gretchen, whose life is ultimately destroyed when she gives birth to Faust's illegitimate son. Realizing this unholy act, she drowns the child and is held for murder. I DONT THINK I NEED to talk about this much. The fact that Faroe died drowning, that Faroe was also concieved out of wedlock, that Bella's family is super religious. Also the fact that arthur was this close to destroying Bella's life and leaving her with the child, plays an INTERESTING paraell.
Faust is irrevocably corrupted and believes his sins cannot be forgiven; when the term ends, the Devil carries him off to Hell. Let's just refference all of Arthur's Nightmares and his breakdown after killing Uncle.
I do find this concept interesting because Arthur is heading to New York as Kayne desire, from what prophesies insit is to serve the order of the Fallen Star. If we follow Faustian folklore, it's likely that Arthur is entering a trap in which he's going to see the fine print of his deal, and find himself in servitude. Considering in the story, Mephistopheles (the devils representative) serves Faust with his powers until death, and then the roles reverse. I do find it interesting, considering John is essentially at Arthur's beck and call. Could his secret deal between John and Kayne have something to do with an act of servitude. Has he got something in it to protect himself ? John seems quite desperate to keep Arthur from death, seems more afraid of what waits for arrhur than himself. Something seemed to insist they wont end up in the same place. maybe he knows that the deals made will have Arthur enterally enslaved.
There is a slightly more modern interpretation in which Faust is saved by God via his constant attempts to be a good person. Who knows, maybe John could be his saving grace, and push him in the direction of freedom. Will the King in Yellow save Arthur from Kayne, does God save his follower from the devil?
These are interesting questions, that have me scared.

I wish I could properly express how much I love media that explores the relationship between humanity and "monsters". There is something so dark about characters losing their compassion as they delve into whatever darker power is holding them hostage, and their own fear they have towards their actions. Or what is even better, is the discussion of where is the line between humanity and monster drawn.
I think this is something that makes mythology SO interesting, so many monsters within Greek epics did not start as monsters, but were often normal people. Medusa, Scylla, Arachne, there are soso many. They lost the things that made them human.
This is also a callout post for TMA. Jon's descent into monsterhood is devastating to watch. You get to see a man who is truly afraid of becoming a pawn for a greater power. Jon was not chosen, he was not destined to be a monster, he was simply the person to take the archival job. Tbh TMA and TMP plays with inhumanity in a very interesting way. Like Needles is SUCH a fun character. Jokes aside from them just being some guy, with a fuck ton of needles, there's this callousness that they have when discussing people. They do not care that they killed someone, they care more about their own survival. There is a freedom in the loss of control, but when you gain this freedom, do you lose your humanity in tandem?
It'll be interesting to see what kind of role, if any, Needles will have going forward. I'm also curious if Sam will soon grow more unbothered by death and the horrors as he's exposed to more statements.
I've heard Dungeon Meshi also delves into the line between humanity and monster however I havent gotten for enough to speak on it yet ;0 ok thats all I just wanted to yell about this

are there any specific books or sources you recommend for reading some of the original Filipino folklore that the podcast draws from?
Sort of! A lot of the sources are just osmosis and having your family tell you the stories from childhood. There's many different versions of the same creature, so there's no decisive Wrong Version of something passed down through generations. Listening to collections of horror stories from Filipinos is a fun way to know how the living folklore affects Filipinos in modern day.
But in terms of resources that are accessible, The Aswang Project does the most research and compiles info online. It's headed by a white Canadian, not a Filipino, but Jordan Clark has been a great friend and supporter of Filipino work surrounding folklore and mythology, and he does very thorough research and does the difficult task of hunting down primary and secondary sources for scattered myths and folklore.
He recently edited a new printing + English translation of Ferdinand Blumentritt's Diccionario Mitologico De Filipinas, which is a sort of dictionary of Filipino mythology from all the way back in 1895, written by Jose Rizal's BFF Ferdinand Blumentritt.
I like to joke that it's appropriate this important Filipino resource written by a white guy who was passionate about Filipino culture was resurrected and rereleased by a white guy who's passionate about Filipino culture.
Jordan sent me a copy for free! Super nice of him.
For direct Filipino sources, it's difficult since a lot of the academic sources are scattered or not widely distributed.
Here's a few options:
Check out the Ayala Museum shop, they sell a few books centred on Filipino history, culture and mythology.
The Soul Book: Introduction to Philippine Pagan Religion is another one (it's available on the Internet Archive).
The Creatures of Philippine Lower Mythology, as well as other works by Maximo D Ramos, are also available online.
Disclaimer: I'm no expert, though I have been delving into Filipino folklore for years for my storytelling. Folk beliefs are a living thing in the Philippines, built on decades upon centuries of culture, but not as many people write this stuff down.
I usually just go with what I know, but when I need inspiration or to double check my sources I use Aswang Project or the Diccionario.
Also - there's no Original Sources for most of these. That's what happens when colonisation wipes out most older folk beliefs. What's survived has often been what the friars wrote down and that current historians have been able to salvage.

More Camlann musings but Santa would exist. Either it causes the corporations to find an end to the apocalypse because he alone is digging into their bottom line. Or it proves that a coal baron started the whole thing because that’s what Santa would give out. I also just love the idea of a middle manager going crazy trying to figure out how these kids got their product and if it’s stolen. Could Nintendo sue? Could he get people’s parents back together?

To everyone who I’ve ever heard bitch about Athena being “the man’s god” and only helping men while only bringing attention to stories where she curses women - SHUT UP.
Reading Robert Fagles translation of the Odyssey and she literally went out of her way to make a phantom of Penelopes sister to comfort her before she fell too deep into depression after she learns of the suitors plans to find and kill her son she didn’t even know was gone.
All Gods have their faults in mythology written by a patriarchy, BUT DONT SAY ATHENA HATES WOMEN PLEASE YOURE SO WRONG.

Perry: So, apparently the “bad vibes” I’ve been feeling are actually severe psychological distress.
And also
Gwen: How many kids do you have?
Perry: Biologically, legally or emotionally?
And
Perry: Please, I’m begging you, go to a doctor
Morgan: I’m sorry is this OUR stab wound? Stay out of it
And
Morgan: You’re my best friend and I would do anything for you
Dai: Eat three full meals a day and have a healthy sleep schedule.
Morgan: Absolutely not.
