I break my own rules too often. . This mornings coffee and Jesus time was about my own expectations of perfection and God’s. His are the standard of perfection, but what does that mean? Matthew 5 has a little something to say, if you’re not familiar with it, imagine the Ten Commandments (if you’re familiar with those) but on steroids. To lust is the same as to cheat. To rage/hate a person is the same as murder. This is His standard. . Knowing I’ll never live up to it, I’ve created my own rules within the system. That as long as I don’t mess up “too” many times. As long as I don’t get angry when someone wrongs me, as long as I can “bounce” my eyes I won’t have to pluck them out. . It’s not good enough. . The standard is set, and I don’t measure up. I will never do enough to be perfect. And it breaks my heart, it means I cannot achieve perfection on my own. Good thing the one who is perfect loves me and wants the best for me. I’ve signed up for His masterclass. It cost a lot but He gave me a scholarship that paid for it. Now I must depend on His coaching, His tutelage, and work through the lessons He gives me. It’ll be hard because I have to let go of my stubborn ways, my own standard of perfection and take on His higher standard. He doesn’t just want me to pass the class, He wants me to have top marks. . Has it ever dawned on you that you are responsible spiritually to God for other people? For instance, if I allow any turning away from God in my private life, everyone around me suffers. We “sit together in the heavenly places…” (Ephesians 2:6). “If one member suffers, all the members suffer with it…” (1 Corinthians 12:26). If you allow physical selfishness, mental carelessness, moral insensitivity, or spiritual weakness, everyone in contact with you will suffer. But you ask, “Who is sufficient to be able to live up to such a lofty standard?” “Our sufficiency is from God…” and God alone (2 Corinthians 3:5).

“You shall be witnesses to Me…” (Acts 1:8). How many of us are willing to spend every bit of our nervous, mental, moral, and spiritual energy for Jesus Christ? That is what God means when He uses the word witness. But it takes time, so be patient with yourself. Why has God left us on the earth? Is it simply to be saved and sanctified? No, it is to be at work in service to Him. Am I willing to be broken bread and poured-out wine for Him? Am I willing to be of no value to this age or this life except for one purpose and one alone— to be used to disciple men and women to the Lord Jesus Christ. My life of service to God is the way I say “thank you” to Him for His inexpressibly wonderful salvation. Remember, it is quite possible for God to set any of us aside if we refuse to be of service to Him— “…lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified” (1 Corinthians 9:27).

One of the tests for determining if the work of salvation in your life is genuine is— has God changed the things that really matter to you? If you still yearn for the old things, it is absurd to talk about being born from above— you are deceiving yourself. If you are born again, the Spirit of God makes the change very evident in your real life and thought. And when a crisis comes, you are the most amazed person on earth at the wonderful difference there is in you. There is no possibility of imagining that you did it. It is this complete and amazing change that is the very evidence that you are saved. What difference has my salvation and sanctification made? For instance, can I stand in the light of 1 Corinthians 13 , or do I squirm and evade the issue? True salvation, worked out in me by the Holy Spirit, frees me completely.
