One of the worst things about ATLA and its annoying fandom is white people once again see real cultures as fun fandom things, so you have all these racists, Orientalists, and cultural tourists treating Asian and Indigenous cultures as fun aesthetics to play around with, including using CLOSED PRACTICES to get backpats for omg you are so good at culture!! compliments and talking over people who have criticisms about how their cultures were portrayed by white creators.
Like, I just saw fanart of K*tara 'inspired' by real Inuit culture, and it's well-drawn, but the artist, who is not Inuit, drew Inuit face tattoos on her, which is a closed practice that I remember a lot of Inuit fans said that if you're not Inuit, you should not be drawing those tattoos on the W*ter Tr*be characters, especially when they have meanings that only the community knows and doesn't share with outsiders, again bc closed practice - and this artist even admitted to just drawing random squiggles, basically, so it's racist both in terms of engaging with a closed practice and reducing a meaningful practice to random doodles.
There's also the fact that Indigenous peoples have been saying for YEARS how racist it is that the show depicts the Inuit-inspired characters as uniquely super misogynistic when Inuit culture is more egalitarian, and it's shitty that white creatives chose to depict the darker-skinned Natives as more misogynistic than the light-skinned cultures that were historically more sexist than the Inuit, but everyone keeps doubling down on how S*kka being a cartoon misogynist is so essential that it needs to be kept to protect the sanctity of their annoying cartoon to protest N*tflix, like idk maybe care more about actual POC than your cartoon made by two Orientalist white men?

No one asked about Regis? So here: Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy
Tumblr media
this bingo card is more awash with red than the north when he was arounddddd. ok ok
"they are so cool looking": i'll split this part up into three parts:
his fashion. i'm happy to have a fave character that dresses all in black, because i dress in all black. i have realized that there is a lot of creativity to be explored in all-black outfits, because you can do so much with silhouette, textures, patterns... and how he dresses. aprons? thank you. capes? thank you. velvet jacket? thank you again. i love regis' fashion because it's well done yet not begging for attention - because there was once a time in which he was begging for attention - he's happy to exist without trying to appeal to others...
his looks. i'm happy that he appears middle-aged because - and i have said this before, but will reiterate my theory and opinion - that vampires appear how they feel they exist, and regis coming back from his youth and now appearing as an adult demonstrates what he has learned, how he has changed, and that he has symbolically, personally aged, and that age, learning, and humanness is beautiful.
his powers. come on. he can disappear and hypnotize and fly as a bat... these are insanely cool. emerging from the shadows is sick as fuck. and it looks cooler when you're wearing a cape.
"everyone but me is wrong about them" + "they got done dirty by the fans": i made @burnfalka to address two evils: firstly, n*tflix, as it is everybody's enemy. but secondly, regis' treatment in the games and by the fandom. people who are h*rny about regis because they think drinking blood is hot are my enemies. or people who focus on regis' horrible drama-filled pain from blood & wine... i have most of the fandom blocked i think just because that type of content is insufferable to me. it's confusing, it's not who regis is...???
"not as deep as they seem": regis is very funny and a comic relief character but he is not seen like this by the fandom because of misperceptions that vampires are dramatic and not funny. to the contrary, read baptism of fire, he's very funny. his entire backstory is not that deep, it's just dark comedy and a parody of a human story of alcoholism, there's parody like "fly drunk" instead of "drive drunk," "didn't return to the crypt for three nights" instead of "didn't return home for three nights." he's just a comic relief character in so many circumstances but it's overlooked.
"wasted potential" + "they're deeper than they seem" + "they work better as part of a dynamic": related to how the hansa needs their relationships explored, regis' character arc is completed by existing in the hansa and learning what a family is, because humanity = family, to be part of a human family makes him human. his relationships in the hansa aren't just funny and for fun, they change his character for the better. i don't think this is necessarily "wasted potential," because i do believe it's canon, but it's just something i've decuded from the text and added some imagination to, which isn't apparent upon a first read of the books
i think the entire thing about toussaint being a dream they want to dream but in the end must wake up from is integral to the plot of lady of the lake and all of their characters - toussaint is really deeper than it seems, or how it gets treated - because it's symbolically the dreamland, the fairytale land, the perfect land where everything is ok and they can pretend to be whoever they want and forget about the harsh world of reality and their dark pasts. and i think regis' connection to this is that dreaming a dream and being in a drunken state are symbolically the same thing (which is why toussaint is not only the fairytale land, but the wine land) so he is no stranger to this kind of temptation. i think that part is really interesting, and it's much more deep than him showing a silver fork to the high nobility.
i can't answer this part of the bingo without talking about regis and angouleme but instead of writing an entire new post i will link to the masterpost found in my previous pinned post which is here...
but the sparknotes of it is that angouleme is wild, crazy, young, and fucked up with so many problems, and regis was once exactly like her. because they are like these kindred spirits, he could guide her into discovering peace and humanity, but also, he doesn't fully understand humanity because he's still learning about it, so angouleme could also guide him into humanity by teaching him what it is like to care about a child, which is a very human feature (because human immortality is achieved through raising children which will outlive their parents). basically, they could lift each other's character development up like the troll physics forklift meme. the blind leading the blind, the "never knew humanity" leading the "lost humanity". and also since they are both funny characters they can be funny together and get into hijinks and trouble and regis can get his cape caught in a doorframe . and he's like her dad if dads were not your dads but your teachers and guardian angels and bartenders instead.
"got too much screen time": it's a challenge because he's talkative and thus needs more page space to speak, but in lady of the lake, i feel his page time needs to be balanced with milva's page time, since they balance one another. for example, in baptism of fire, his page time is well-balanced with milva's, milva gets the first and second chapters, regis gets the third and fourth chapters, they unite in the fifth chapter, and divide the seventh chapter between them.
in lady of the lake, regis has too much time that becomes unbalanced by milva due to her physical and emotional injuries taking her out of scenes, i need to have scenes with milva speaking to regis or geralt about her injured ribs and about her turned-down relationship with amadis.
"they are literally me!": i, too, must explain things at length to people and act like an insufferable know-it-all or else i'll die.
regis talks soooo much and what i love about his talking is that most of the time he is talking about his own thoughts or assessments, which ultimately do not matter and have little effect. in dandelion's words, "He had the unnerving habit of announcing allegations and truths with the tone and air of a prophet, to which we soon stopped responding, because the announced allegations either actually were true, or at least seemed to be sound, or they were unable to be verified, which amounted to the same thing."
"i like them enough to project my own issues onto them": the reason i started to like regis in the first place was because i projected my internalized homophobia onto him and worked through some issues... everybody say thank you regis.
now i project my issues onto both him and angouleme so if you add them together, you'd get me.
"i'm mentally ill about them" + "they are like a blorbo to me" + "i want to carry them in a handbag like a tiny dog": i constantly think about regis and angouleme's mentorship-friendship, so for that reason i am mentally ill (or maybe they help me with my mental illness... it's like a chicken or the egg question, which came first?). regis is blorbo from my shows books because i will talk about him incessantly and extrapolate information from passages of the text you had forgotten about or thought were irrelevant. and i do sometimes carry a regis keychain-necklace (i broke the necklace chain last week. yeah that sucked so now i have to get a new one) that i feel like functions as a talisman of protection. you don't have to believe me but read the prelude to chapter 3 in baptism of fire about mandrakes. like the mandrakes, he helps with trials. thank you sir surgeon
send me character opinion bingo now that i'm off hiatus (bingo post)

did you watch 1670?
no. i'm not a fan of shows and in general i have very restrictive rules regarding things i'm allowed to watch xD from polish films i only watch animations or documentaries during festivals. also in general i only watch old films, the newest being from the 80s and very rarely from the 90s (but also like i stopped watching anything at home long time ago and now the only chance for me to watch something is to go the cinema during film festivals).
and the only thing worse than the 17th century is the 18th century, not my favourite era to put it mildly.
also it seems that everybody has already forgotten about this show... i don't like n*tflix for this reason, all those shows are popul;ar for a short moment and then disappear bc they're bad and derivative. tetsuo the iron man for example, it's a timeless film, still has its admirers. but who is going to remember this show in 30 years?

What are your favorite turkish period dramas?
Well, Aziz, obviously (duuh). Joking lmao, it's not just Aziz of course. I'm gonna put it this way: the ones from this list may not be my favorites exactly, but they're definitely something worthy of attention. It's gonna be quite long, so putting this under the cut ✨
honestly, i can't say i watched many turkish period dramas, but from what i could see so far, i really liked documentary-oriented one with Tuba Buyukustun called Rise of Empires: Ottoman, the one she did for N*tflix
i mean, look at those COSTUMES! It's freaking amazing. (sorry for the quality :/) And i also really liked the historical part of it, it was very interesting to follow, but i didn't watch the following seasons. the first season has 8 episodes
Tumblr media
i also tried to watch Muhteşem Yüzyıl (my mom watched it) and Ertugrul, but it's just not my cup of tea, tho both shows have really great cast.
Tumblr media
I also watched the first season of The Great Seljuks, but dropped it after s1 (honestly, now i don't remember why, it had wonderful cast and was pretty dymanic, i think i just postponed watching and never returned to it afterwards).
Tumblr media
There was also Destan, but i dropped it because i also postponed watching waiting for more eps to be out, and around the same time i discovered Aziz and nothing else just mattered really 💀💀💀 I watched around 5 or 6 episodes, it was okay (the costumes in these are also MIND-BLOWING btw), but at the same time one of my acquaintances (who was watching Destan, and also watched Aziz with me) told me that they completly ruined the show, especially the finale, so i never returned to it (they treated it as poorly as Aziz btw, by renewing the show first, and then cancelling it), and because they didn't know what to do with it, there's a very rushed and sloppy finale)
Tumblr media
There was also a period drama called Kalbimin Sultani — a joint production between Russia and Turkey. A classical farytale cinderella story but in a unique setting, i think, where a turkish sultan falls in love with a russian teacher. It didn't do very well in Turkey and was cancelled after 8 eps, but it was A HIT in Russia, and it had full 24 episodes with a happy finale (i don't think subtitles are available anywhere, so sorry :( but the 8-episode version is still available on YT if you want to check it out). Personally, i enjoyed it a lot — it had super cool soundtrack, action, drama, a bit of comedy, great acting — overall, a good show to spend your time on i think, as long as you don't expect anything too serious from it)
Tumblr media
as i said, there's not much, but there you go. Hope this helps you somehow anon :)

Not cr*ws fan complaining about how their faves didn't get enough screentime and their traumas and relationships and personalities wasn't properly explored/portrayed 💀 Not them saying instead of important fight scenes give more screentime to the cr*ws 💀 The cr*ws already got so much screentime (in a show that has to cover the plot of TWO books!) and as a result the main characters were damaged and almost ruined, even the fucking protagonist. The showrunner is practically kissing their asses WHAT MORE DO THEY WANT???? Sorry for yelling i don't dislike the cr*ws either i'm just so fed up with their fans.
I completely get your frustration. We all know they’re getting their spin off so in addition to the screen time they’ve already gotten, they’re also gonna get who knows how many other seasons to flesh out their characters. Meanwhile, us s&b fans were only every really gonna get 3 seasons at the most and they wasted most of it. Plus, the show is supposed to be about the s&b trilogy (it’s in the name) so we have more reason to be angry.
As far as the traumas go, they should be grateful cause they got a whole lot more than we did. I would’ve loved to see more aleksander flashbacks so the audience could really understand the importance of why he’s fighting so hard against those that want to hurt the grisha. We also could’ve gotten a lot more from alina and how she’s processing everything that’s happening but instead it was all rushed. They really could’ve fleshed out her character more in the show, have her learn to accept and be proud of her grisha identity, but nope. Instead her whole arc is “I want more power to end the darkling”. It’s hard to tell what’s worse, what they’ve done in the show or the books with her.
It almost seems like the show runner did this on purpose just to kill s&b and move on to his passion project which is very selfish on his part. I also blame N*tflix, they know what most of their viewers wanted to see and it wasn’t 80% cr*ws screen time so they really should’ve pushed back.

N*tflix cancelled Dead End on Friday the 13th no less. I'm very tired. - 🌧Gary/Jules
Yeah, I'm really tired of them canceling shows. And knowing how much it meant to you, I'm sorry that you have to go through this. Things have to change; the people who treat animation as if it's nothing needs to change, too.
As an aside, I meant to watch the second season for a long time. I gotta get to that very soon.

it is so strange to me to see people on here talk about feeling any kind of "pressure" at all to watch whatever becomes the latest ~tumblr fave~ show like.... it is so phenomenally rare for me to actually be into whatever tumblr is loving at any given moment but that's just... life? like just don't watch what you don't want to and block stuff if it bothers you that much????

idk where you see tr*ffick*rs romanticized or americans depicted as good. i’ll assume you just didn’t watch the shows. either way you’re full of shit
JAJAJAJAJAJA YEAH SURE, anon, so does everyone else who has the audacity to criticize those shows and doesn't blindly praise n*tflix for whatever bs they pull, right?
It's not enough that Colombians themselves have criticised Netflix since the very beginning, it's not enough that Sebastián Marroquín had to criticise Netflix extensively and even had to make a documentary to debunk the stories that Netflix told and "adjust (the story) to reality" —and present it at Cannes for people to listen.
And the way the audience, the so-called fans of those shows engage with that media, tells anyone con dos dedos de frente what those shows have done.
Just say that you want to consume media without thinking critically about the narratives they set forth and their consequences, it's easier.
Edit: I’m just going to quote Sebastián Marroquín himself on the documentary he made and the reasons why he made it.

All the petty things I hate about fate!winx and their shitty universe/world building because
Tumblr media
I'd added most if these in tags of other posts but I'm still so mad lmao
The way characters, Aisha and Mrs Dowling specifically make references to explicitly human or American things like instagram and Harry Potter
These people are from a different dimension for ffs why are they concerned with or are even aware of this very earth-specific shit? Do they teach earth classes at school over there?
I understand not wanting to have them be oblivious so Bloom wouldn't have to explain it to them, but it simply could be ✨omitted✨
Why would you go out of your way to date your work like this lmao ew
Ms. Dowling calling Tinkerbell an air fairy.. I cannot breeve with the stupidity why did they keep that in there
Why is Ms. Dowling.. the headmistress.. teaching classes? Where are the other teachers?
We ended up with a trio of antagonists (I guess you could call them that?) by the end of the season anyway so why not give us the trix, why have the characters play double roles as friends of our protagonists and also the villains/bullies? They clearly wanted a delinquent trio, in which case they could've gender bent the trix if they wanted to keep all the unnecessary sexual tension.
It just feels like the production team was lazy, they didn't want to hire more actors, they didn't want to bother with making the world immersive or lived in or believable at best, they just didn't give enough of a fuck
They wanted to make this show and attatch Winx to it for.. what? Like did you even google the main plot points? The abridged version or sparknotes to get details on the very literal, basic characteristics of our main characters or their roles or the world they inhabit????
It lacks wonder and intrigue.. I mean Bloom moves to another dimension, a school for fairies and we don't see her marvel once at anything.. and that's because she might as well have been in Switzerland because she's in exactly the same environment she would've been in over there anyway.
They could've said Alfea was in Europe and I'd believe it because nothing about the setting makes it feel otherworldly. I'm sorry but I'm not impressed.
Why do the teachers and graduated specialists communicate via facetime ?? In the magic dimension. ??? Why do they text each other and those texts then appear on screen like .. oh look, like a bad netflix teen movie ????? HELLO ??? it's the way technology and magic could've blended in so seamless into the world THE WAY IT WAS ALREADY DONE/SHOWN. Missed opportunity. it just takes you out of it imo every time you see the ugly, bland, gray text bar. Some fucking flavour pls I'm begging
How stupid the specialist must feel clonking around with the skinniest shreds of armor, plastic swords on their backs and battery powered flashlights and cellphones in their bags. R we larping?? I know I'd be laughing and asking why we hadn't already come up with something more effective .. idk like guns. I'm surprised I ain't see one gun in there.
In the beginning Ms. Dowling says some nonsense about fairies having lost the ability to transform to explain why there are no wings, which means they could've transformed before. So are we to assume that this supposed to be set in the time proceeding the original then?? Because something is not adding up with where they should be as a magical society technologically if that's the case
How does the production team want to keep the dark academia vibes with torches lining the walls and also want them to be face timing each other, presumably from miles and miles away in the dark forest???
Pls pick an aesthetic and stick to it everything was so unnecessarily dark. Where do they charge their phones since it's the only device we see that is the slightest bit modern and dont fucking tell me they charge it with magic I will punch you in the face
Why is there only one major monarchy that we are shown? Why are Solaria the only ones contributing to the efforts to defend the school and where is this mysterious battalion we never see lmaoo it's all so bad its laughable.
Is this set in the kingdom of Solaria? And why does the queen of an alleged interdimensional superpower monarchy pull up in black SUVs??????????? Why does she pull up with Andreas?? Is he not the king of Erakleon?? Where are his soldiers and his battalion and just?? Huh!? The world just feels empty like nobody lives here fr
Are we supposed to believe that the specialists get paired up with fairies just as a normal occurence and that they have to 'trust each other' and not because the plot demands it suddenly half way through when all we've seen so far are the fairies doing normalish school and homework, and the specialists outside, being physical everyday all day. This was never even implied that they'd have to work together apart from when we see the faculty as youngins with Rosalind. But even then.. it's like well why are they even together lmao? Is this a special team formed from Rosalind’s protégées? Were they formed after graduating from Alfea or what is this?? Are they the ONLY team of specialist/fairies hunting every single burned one?? What?
Are we now supposed to buy that Musa is being switched to 'support' because that's where her strengths lie and not in combat?? Are we supposed to believe that these girls know hand to hand combat?? When was this established? We see Terra wrapping some baby vines around a dude and I'm sorry is that the practical application of her power? Is this what the fairies are supposed to do once they graduate? Or is it just a switch in curriculum because of the threats outside the barrier?? This is never made clear.
Because if not then what's the point of this?? Why do they suddenly have endless classes together when the expectation was never set for the fairies to be like soldiers or out in the field fighting ?
Where exactly are they supposed to be what was the purpose of including Aster Dell and why is it a joy ride away from Alfea lmao?? Where Bloom is from and also not from?? Plot pls make it make sense
Why are fairies from another dimension vaping or smoking weed?? They are not human so why are they engaging in specifically human vices, yol couldn't come up with anything else to characterize 'delinquents'?? Very lazy very como se dices.. no effort. Nothing a little more spicy yol could invent, at least change the name and some properties holy shit did yol even try ??
So its fairies everywhere, having a lil party in the east wing of a phat castle.. and they are playing beer pong and dressed in t shirts and jeans..
Can you hear me screaming? Can you hear me vibrating with rage?
Not one floating decoration or magical anything in sight. Just purple lights and subpar vibes
Stella's costume design: tragic. I won't discuss further because we don't have the space or time but just know that it was absolutely atrocious and I hated it. Giving very debutante vibes
The entire budget going to that lame transformation sequence that was not a transformation sequence and those horrible, barely-there fire wings
Edgelord bloom and all her fucking leather jackets. Why do 30 yo, white cis men think girls exist in a binary? They could keep her earlier characterization and make her a hothead.. Bloom literally screamed herself into a couple power upgrades in the original come ooonnnn
Let girls be feminine without it being a character flaw what is wrong with yol its 2021. They could make her more mature, more angsty or whatever the hell else and not style her like that
The way Aisha's abilities flipflop between episodes and scenes. Very inconsistent. One minute she's struggling with a drop of water and the next she is moving an entire body of water for her bestie Bloom to fake transform because the plot demands it. Why even add in her struggles at all if you're just going to ignore it?
Why was Stella with them in that scene? She didn't do anything literally.. Aisha pulled the water and she did .. nothing.
Who the fuck is Rosalind? Why would they add her in,, to add nothing to story? The company of light was a thing, they could've plucked one of them hoes to be the antagonist. Why did the winx club need their own Delores Umbridge? Valtor was right there if you wanted an evil educator type character.
The camera work was so bland during the down beats, stagnant and fixed during a fairy party and erratic and ugly and disorienting during the fight scenes
I'm not getting over the fairy party because it was a good opportunity for the production and everyone else to show the differences between where Bloom was and where she is now but instead it just looks like a regular teen high school party?? This could have been set in Switzerland fr.
Everyone's just kind of standing?? You mean to tell me these people are from all different places in the magical dimension and their customs are all the same? They all throw parties like this ??
White and flavorless I am very bored
I guess the main question or takeaway I have is just.. who is this for? Because everyone, including the showrunners keep saying that it's for us, the fans of the original. But apart from the characters sharing some names, there are really no other similarities. So again, who was this supposed to appease or placate or satisfy? Because it sure as hell wasn't the winx club fans.
Overall, this feels very much like something I wrote and probably published on ff.net when I was 13 because I thought girls couldn't be taken seriously if they liked pink, and injected angst into everything that didn't need it and had no idea how to structure scenes or dialogue. It's just bad, objectively and N*tflix will keep making shit like this because apparently some people have bad taste??? Idk yol, be easy
#im never gonna stop i dont care i dont care#and i dont even usually make my own posts i just be reblogging and vibing#but im passionate abt this because he originak was the reason i wanted to learn how to draw#it was the reason i wanted to learn how to write and tell stories#it shaped a lot of shit for me because it was the very first one of its kind id ever seen#i ran home from school to watch it and argued with my friends about who got to be flora#i forced them to make cardboard wings with me and to perform the opening song during a school talent show#thank god we didnt get to perform otherwise we would all have died of embarrassment in hindsight#but ye i just hate to see things that obviously are very dear to a lot of people be treated with such casual indignity and its a disservice#a disservice to the fans and to the people who had probably want to create it as a passion project#to the people who spent hours and hours in rewrites and fanart amazing fanart and post series continuations#no one is saying the original is sacred and cannot be touch#this fandom actively calls out the bullshit rainbow has done and continues to do to the characters we love.. i havent spoken to one fan who#doesnt have an alter dedicated to their downfall. we found a piece of ourselves in these gorls and they were stripped and caricatured and#played for laughs so netfilx can make money and its just very upsetting to see.#so again fuck you brian young fuck you ignio and rainbow and fuck whoever the costume designer was#mine#text#fate winx club#fate: the winx saga#f:tws#winx club

i apologise (but not really) because I love Bucky, I do. He’s my boy. But my man was—and is—Matt. I came to this fandom because of him. So him getting love again, members coming back to join me in my daredevil-hellhole makes me so excited! Also, watch the daredevil N*tflix show when you can — who knows if N*tflix will be allowed to keep it up if MM is in NWH.

hey so i assume what the previous anon was getting at with the whole 'fanfiction shouldn't be sold for profit' thing is the legal consideration, not a moral one. It's fine if fic is sold in a zine where no one makes any profit aka where the money just covers production costs, but as soon as someone makes money off of writing fic, it's copyright infringement and it brings a heap of legal trouble, which has come up a lot recently with the whole post+ controversy
Hi there! I am absolutely familiar with the controversy, and we appreciate you expressing concern, if that's what this is. Don't worry, we did a lot of research before we started this project, and that included the legality of all parts of it. While we're here, let me explain a bit more about what that means. (This is NOT legal advice, just from our personal experience running a small project in the United States.)
Firstly, there is no difference (that I can find) legally between a zine that donates proceeds to a nonprofit and one that doesn't - the way that those fundraisers work is that people sell zines and then the person who is in charge of finances makes a donation with the available funds. It's not legally a 501c3 nonprofit, and is therefore the same.
Zines with fic in them, including for-profit ones, are fairly common, and happen all the time without lawsuits. The way that the "legality" of fan content works is that the original creator/owner of the canon content, be it show or book or anything else, can decide to sue someone for making fan content based on their work. They can do so for any content, as many people familiar with the fanfiction controversies just like this that happened a decade ago will remember. Do they have more grounds/are they more likely to care when that content is being made for-profit? Yeah, probably. But it's absolutely up to creator discretion. Kenny Ortega and N*tflix are very unlikely to sue us for the tiny amount that we may make on this project. Even if they wanted to, they would have to send a cease and desist letter (a warning basically) before they could pursue any legal action.
Believe it or not, these grounds are exactly the same as the ones for fan art sold for profit! It is equally as legal to do both of those things. People sell fan art and merch for profit all day every day without much of an issue, specifically in this fandom. People also do sell fanfiction for a profit (commissioned fanfic, anyone?), just not often publicized on Tumblr for these exact reasons. People are simply more concerned about one than the other because of historical precedent with lawsuits. If Kenny and N*tflix have not come after any of the people selling JATP merch online, they are extremely unlikely to decide to do so for us.
