National Clean Your Home Month, aka NaClYoHo or "Salty Pirates" month, is soon to be upon us!
Each November, I "host" NaClYoHo, where participants work to make their living spaces more comfortable and pleasant. The full manifesto is at the link, but the basic premise is that each day in November you put on a podcast, tv show, playlist, or other media, and clean or organize some aspect of your home.
It's meant to be a low-stress way to both do a yearly cleaning and also participate in an intensive project like National Novel Writing Month without having to write a novel. I'll be posting about it again before November kicks off, but I thought I'd link to the manifesto well ahead of time, so people could brace themselves. :D
This year my big goals are to figure out how to keep my floors truly clean, replace at least one rug, and clear out the storage nook where I have a bunch of stuff that needs sorting through. I am also going to try to dedicate some time to researching those "bathroom refresh" companies that basically just put a shell over your existing shower/tub/walls and see if it's feasible for my bathroom, which desperately needs it.

I was going to put a podcast on to listen to while I'm making oatmeal bars and cleaning, but I'm trying to listen to the Behind the Bastards podcast in the order they were released, starting in 2018.
I started ages ago, but got stuck because it took me about two years to get myself to listen to the Reagan episodes.
Anyway, going back that far on the podcast website is annoying, since there are like 8+ per month.
They've all been uploaded to youtube so I'm listening there. I found a way to play them through my media player, so no ads yay.
But they were uploaded in batches, not on the date they were released. So I'm like, there has to be a list somewhere.
Yeah not that I could find.
They have them on IMDb for some reason, but they're stupidly organized. They start out in order, but then aren't in order. Sometimes they'll shove in a different year just for the hell of it.
I'll find parts four five and six but have to look at a different year to find parts 1 2 and 3 and I don't even know where part 7 went.
So instead of doing anything practical I'm sitting here organizing all of the episodes of behind the bastards and a spreadsheet.
So if anyone is interested in a spreadsheet of all of the Behind the Bastards episodes, in order by date, let me know.
Spoiler: Kissinger gets six episodes.

Day 1 of NaClYoHo the random spreadsheet generator gave me: cleaning the toaster oven
Before:
And after:
And then I had a little more time, so I dusted and decluttered the piano. Someday I'll figure out a good way to get rid of the piano....

more naclyoho
since i made progress but did not finish my mending project on the 3rd, i finished it on the 4th. where before there were holes and worn fabric, there is now fun embroidery!
love how it turned out! i'd like to figure out how to fix and protect those ragged stretchy cuff ends too, but that's a project for another time. i also cleaned the toilet bowls.
on the 5th i washed another window's blinds! very slowly, with many breaks, bc what a fucking task lol. that window is taller than me 🫠. but that's 2 windows done! i swept and washed the sill and the floor underneath while i was down there, too, so I won't have to move the piece of furniture that goes in front of it again, if i clean the rest of that floor soon (a big if, but less big for having done that).
today/the 6th, i did some dusting and added in a few high up spots that can't be easily reached and were therefore Very dusty. i wasn't willing to get out a ladder today but i was willing to stand on tiptoe and/or the stairs and really reach, and some stuff's cleaner than it's been in a while for it. also got what I could reach of some wall, which shouldn't be allowed to get dusty, and yet!

So this year's "big project" for NaClYoHo is replacing all my plumbing. Last November one of the fifty-year-old galvanized steel pipes sprang a leak, causing a minor flood. I fixed that bit immediately, but I've known the plumbing is on borrow time since then. I hope to have the replacement completed by the end of the month.
I started work on this in October, though just prep work. Today I removed and replaced the first actual pipe: I replaced the three-foot section coming out of the hot water heater with CPVC. This means I can create new CPVC branches in parallel to the old galvanized branches, without disrupting the galvanized supply until I'm ready to switch.
The pipe I removed has a 3/4-inch internal diameter. In theory. Once upon a time. Rust has narrowed it to maybe 1/2-inch--I could barely see light through it. It took two pipe wrenches, a three-foot "cheater bar" (wrench handle extension), and my full body weight to get it loose. The water ran orange for five minutes in the kitchen when I turned the water back on--like seriously Kool-aid colored!
I also have plenty of smaller, more cleaning-oriented things on my NaClYoHo bucket list, of course. Shampooing the carpets, for one. Sorting out various paperwork. Weeding the kitchen cabinets. Making winter pants.

National Clean Your Home Month Day 18
I avoid paperwork more than I avoid cleaning, so one of my focuses this month has been doing household-related paperwork-type stuff that I tend to put off. Today I did a mix of that and house chores:
- Checked credit card receipts against bank statements and shredded
- wrote my will (it only took 20 minutes!) and worked on other related stuff to help others out if I am suddenly dead or incapacitated (I have no reason to believe that this would happen soon, but my dad died suddenly without a lot of his important information easily accessible to any of us, and it was a mess)
- started putting together a list of documents I'll need to have notarized so that I can plan a trip to the credit union to do them all at once
- printed shipping labels for mailing out wool dryer balls! 🎉 I am so excited they will be of good use!
- worked on using up some stuff in the pantry and fridge by making sunflower seed "peanut butter" cups and tofu-chocolate no-bake cheesecake. When I first tasted the batter, I was worried it would end up tasting beany, but after I finished adding all the chocolate it didn't taste beanie at all, it tasted delicious. It's sitting in the refrigerator now, I'll try to remember to let y'all know tomorrow how it turns out and if it's good, to share the link.
- did a load of laundry and folded and put away what went in the dryer; I hung the rest to dry
- cleaned a single tube and single set of headgear for my CPAP machine. It goes much quicker when I don't make a big project of it by waiting for multiple tubes and headgears to pile up lol
I hope everyone else had a great day today, whether that means taking things off your list or taking a day of rest or self-care, or somewhere in between.

Salty Pirates month hasn't gone as I'd hoped. I've been just barely keeping on top of the regular daily chores (feeding myself, doing dishes, and getting garbage, recycling and green waste out to the bins on time, as well as doing laundry and getting that mostly folded and put away), but I haven't tackled many of the deep clean and organize things I was hoping to accomplish.
I have been knitting, though, so even though I didn't cast on for the big project I thought would be my Knitvember project, I did start and finish two pairs of socks (posted previously), and I finished a hat that was in time out since August, and I started a new pair of fingerless mitts, and have completed the first one.
Going to CO the second mitt tonight, and tomorrow I want to go buy yarn to make a pair of socks or slippers for my late husband's mum for Christmas.
Hat pattern is Metallic Magnetism, mitts are Second Skin, both available on Rav

Oh man you guys, it'll be a minute before I can post properly but cleaning this morning was so gross, I have to think about how to even talk about it. It was a real "you live like this?" moment but it was me asking me.
When your to do list tells you to deep clean the counters and sink every month, YOU SHOULD DO IT.

Ok so we're getting to the end of salty pirate month, so I'm going to try to use my last distraction-free day seeing how depressed I can get!
also by getting as much done today as possible.
Goals:
finish kitchen dishes
2 loads laundry - washed, dried, put away
consolidate the stuff in my room
that fucking tote in the living room that somehow got full again
Bonus Goals:
find a place for the anvil
vacuum
enter maintenance request for the light fixture
Let's see what happens!

For the 1st day of @copperbadge 's NaClYoHo (National Clean Your Home) month, I sorted current mail and shredded/recycled the junk mail, and filed the new stuff and about 90% of the papers I had in a stack to file. Ran out of hanging folders to file the rest, so I'll have to pick up some more. I also put away my Halloween decorations. Feeling pretty accomplished for day 1! I hope I can keep it up!

per about 3 posts back, national clean your house month will be upon us in a bit over two weeks!!! as such, i decided to make a little journal page with some goals & ideas, and of course had to make the whole event magical girl themed to make it more fun!!
watching magical girl shows (either new or rewatches), listening to magical girl playlists/soundtracks, putting on relevant video essays—as long as it’s magical girl related, it will be my cleaning companion!!!
let’s see what we can accomplish in november!!!!!!

National Clean Your House Month Day 27 and 28
Day 27 - Folded some laundry. Not all of it, because of who I am as a person lmaooooo. But more of it was folded today than yesterday so it's progress. Not a lot of physical cleaning happened but I did clean out both my work and my personal inbox.
Day 28 - More laundry folding. Also immediately put away all the groceries after buying them hehe. I am also going to attempt to go through my tumblr drafts and clean that out. A lot of it is saved fics I want to read so wish me luck 😅

Wish I had taken a before picture, but I have finally adressed the plant pot shame corner. It was a bunch of plant pots, some with some earth still in, stacked together in a long flat cardboard box that we'd used for re-potting and a long, half full planter sort of lingering in front of the heater next to it.
Now it is this:
I emptied the pots of earth, stacked then together, threw away the long planter bc it had a leak and vacuumed out, then disassembled the cardboard box.
I have also vacuumed the filthy corner! I have defeated it! It holds no power over me anymore!
