JP vs EN Naming (KaoNagi)
Ship naming discussions
The JP ship name for Murasaki/Sei (Kaoruko/Nagiko) is KaoNagi. Now if you know about yuri fandom, people don’t necessarily always care about ship ordering in regards to topping but some do. And I’ve definitely seen tags of the ship for both Kaonagi and Nagikao. I’ll go into another post about the ordering of the ship but for now it’s about its name.
I’ve noticed a distinctive thing between fans who understand JP and those who don’t. Those in the former category almost always call Sei by Nagiko. The latter stick to just Sei. However when it comes to Murasaki, I’ve noticed it’s far more split. A lot of the Heian Caster Quartet fans and just KaoNagi shippers in general refer to her by Kaoruko but plenty of people still refer to her by Murasaki especially EN speaking fans even if they do know JP and read the events. Which begs the question, when VDay 2020 hits NA, what ship name will be used. Absolutely nobody in JP uses Murasaki/Sei or any version of their literary names. I’ve only seen like one fic tagged with it and another fic amusingly tagged ShikiNago (Shikibu/Shounagon) but by and large people use KaoNagi. Will NA follow suit and start using KaoNagi when talking about it or will they use MuraSei. Or maybe MuraNagi?

Shipping Name Order (KaoNagi)
By the nature of this topic this will mention some NSFW things but nothing explicit and very brief. Also discussions on BL + femslash ships, ship dynamic, what it means to “top” even without NSFW stuff.
One of the unique things about FGO being a game that isn’t unisex like say Twisted Wonderland or Bandori, is that you get people who normally ship one type of ship who then end up dabbling in the other. Most particularly, I’ve ended up following people who normally ship BL but have one or two femslash ships they enjoy. There’s also been a few people I’ve found while trying to find content producers or at least people who talk about Kaonagi who are also mainly BL. And with that comes the main discussion point of this post, I’ve seen a few people say that KaoNagi reminds them of a BL ship.
Now what makes a ship particularly BL-like? In BL fandom, it’s very important to say who tops in a relationship and people who prefer one ordering may loathe the other. There’s one tweet in particular I remember saying that although the tweeter knew that femslash doesn’t care, NagiKao came off as a 百合 ship while KaoNagi felt like a BL ship. And another one tweet said the BL nature of KaoNagi was because of Kaoruko’s heavy feelings. Which seems to indicate there’s a degree of messiness involved.
I definitely confess if we did care about ship name ordering in femslash as much as BL did, I’d definitely say KaoNagi>NagiKao because it is the messier configuration of the ship. It’s hard to say exactly what the difference is on a nonsexual level when you swap who “tops”. In my head, the difference comes to whose pursuing or pushing the relationship forward. I think when those BL fans say it’s messier that’s the root of the reason.
Let’s discuss the NagiKao dynamic. In this case, Nagiko’s the one who drives the relationship forward. It’s easy to see how it progresses, genki extrovert pulls along gloomy introvert and while the gloomy one has something of an annoyance at times, they’re also fond. So when the Nagiko asks for the relationship to be more there’s less things holding Kaoruko back, it’s easy to imagine a scenario where Kaoruko had feelingns already and was too shy to say.
Now let’s move onto KaoNagi. The gist remains the same but now if Kaoruko pursues the relationship, what drove her to the point? If Kaoruko’s the one who has the move it forward then there’s something stopping Nagiko which most shippers agree is Teishi. Hence the messiness of feelings involved, because Kaoruko is painfully aware of how much Nagiko adores Empress Teishi and how the late empress is still the brightest star in the sky for Nagiko, the one that brought the Pillow Book that Kaoruko adores into creation even if she’s gone.
With this, the crux of the ship moves more towards how Kaoruko grapples with her love towards Nagiko when it appears unrequited and why Kaoruko, in spite of her gloomy and pessimistic personality, still pursues a hopeless goal. These are the heavy feelings that BL shippers talk about when they say the ship comes off as BL. Especially when you mix in her previous complicated feelings of admiration and hatred towards Sei Shounagon (as discussed in a previous post) you’ve got something very messy and personally interesting for me to explore.
I’ll continue in a different post on Nagiko’s side of things but I’m personally hesitant without her materials book being out.
