My friend is running a text-based rpg campaign, and I'm absolutely in love with it, so I decided to draw a 'cover' for each day in the story. We'll see if I can do one for each day, but I'm SO proud of how these turned out so far - all of them are inked in my notebook first, and then coloured digitally. If anyone's interested in the story, I've explained more about it all under the cut!

OKAY. So the game is called City of Mists, and basically it's...kinda hard to explain, but I'd call it 'cyberpunk noir', but with a 90s technological aesthetic. Kinda like when you read Issac Asimov's books and they're using computers but it's all cassettes and film-based technology. Anyway, it's awesome. Every character has a normal life in the city - their 'logos' - but there are some characters who are called Rifts, who have something mythological manifest within them - their 'mythos'. Now, the mythos can kinda be anything, but the point is that it's a legend or story that manifests within the character, and thus gives them new abilities. And every Rift has to balance their logos and their mythos - because to delve too much into your mythos means you forget your normal life and become entirely consumed by the mythos...but to focus too much on your logos means to lose, and forget, your mythos entirely. The 'mist' of the city obscures mythological and supernatural things from those who haven't 'awakened' yet - but Rifts can see through the mist.

So, my little guy is - sighs. Okay. Y'all are gonna laugh. Please be aware that I know, okay? I know. It's fine. This is a choice I've made. But he's called Nakis Sandhu, and he's an investigative journalist (NOT with amnesia) who, when he was a kid, was involved in a train accident that killed his parents, but him and his twin sister miraculously survived. He's trans, and he has a van - he doesn't live in it, thank goodness, but it is important because his mythos is Captain Nemo from 20,000 Leagues Under the Seas (this is why he looks like Sacha Dhawan, because like....Sacha Dhawan should play Captain Nemo and I'll die on that hill). And so Nakis, when his mythos awakened, turned his van into the Nautilus - Captain Nemo's submarine - and so it now works underwater too, and can travel undetected. He also becomes like, a technological genius and can invent stuff on the fly, but he never studied engineering or anything - it just comes to him in flashes of inspiration.

Nakis' main thing is that he's trying to figure out what happened in the train crash when he was a kid. He saw something different to everyone else, because he saw through the mist - what everyone else thought was an accident was actually two Rifts duking it out (I think). One of these Rifts was a blue bull that is apparently called 'the Bull of Thunder', and the other was a man with fire based abilities - called 'The Burning Man'. On Day 2, Nakis discovered a metal case that had belonged to the Burning Man, that had been hidden for twenty years - since the day of the accident - and was full of clues, including some photographic film that needed developing. Unfortunately, seems that there's a strange filter on the photos, so it's impossible to tell what's on them...luckily, my guy made friends with a photographer on Day 1 (who I believe is another player character) whilst investigating something else, and as a result he's now passed the film on to him, in the hopes that he'll be able to clear them up.

One funny thing: Day 0 was supposed to be a 'chill' day to figure out how the game mechanics worked, and figure out what your character would do on a normal day. Nakis immediately went to investigate something and then nearly ended up drowning RIP. On Day 1, when continuing to investigate the thing from Day 0, he...got shot in the shoulder HAHAHAH but he's fine, he's doing great, he didn't bleed out in his apartment which is always a win. He also bumped into another player character by doing this - so yay!

This is a bit short, sorryy..

Previously: 

He smiled at it, a sort of bitter smile.

"I tried," he whispered, leaning forward and closing his eyes.

Blue and red lights flashed across his gaze and he blinked wearily, confused. His whole body hurt and he groaned. 

"Sir, I need you to stay still. We're going to give you an anesthetic," someone said, holding Muzan's body up.

He could barely register the words and blacked out before he knew what was happening.

When he woke up, his head hurt like hell and he didn't know what was happening. His throat felt parched and he winced as he tried to sit up, looking around. He appeared to be in a hospital room, he knew that, but he didn't remember anything that had happened in the last... he didn't remember much, actually.

He felt almost like a chunk of his brain had been chopped away. 

There was talking outside the door and two people stepped into the room. One wore a white robe and had a nametag on it. The other person was a mystery for he didn't appear to be someone who worked here, neither someone Muzan recognised. 

"Muzan!" the unknown person said. 

The one with the nametag—Tamayo, apparently—stayed at the door. She said something to the other person then nodded and left.

Muzan was his name, right? Right. How did this person know it. 

The person moved to stand next to his bed and said, his face creased with worry, "Are... are you alright?" 

"Who are you?" Muzan asked. Or rather, he tried to ask but his throat was so dry it came out in a choked cough.

The person quickly handed him some water which Muzan realized he couldn't even drink given that his hands felt stiff. 

The man, which he could now see had long black and red hair tied up in a ponytail, brought the cup to Muzan's lips and he drank needily, sighing deeply once he'd finished.

"Who are you?" he repeated now, his voice clearer.

The man, then, looked hurt and almost scared. "You... you know who I am!! I'm... I'm Michika-... Kokushibo." 

The supposed Kokushibo went to grasp Muzan's hands but he thought better of it and stopped.

"I don't know any Michika," Muzan said. He raised an eyebrow—or at least he hoped that was what he did. "Do you know me?" 

The man—Kokubisho (not a typo<3), 'Michika', whatever—nodded, looking almost desperate. "You... you don't remember me?"

"No, now please leave I don't feel to bothering with random strangers," Muzan huffed.

"You know me!! You... don't you remember?" Kokubisho asked. 

"No! Haven't we already landed on that??" 

He looked down. "You forgot... You hit your head too hard and the doctors said you would forget but I was hoping you didn't." 

"Yeah, yeah, enough bullshit anyone can come up with a lie. Now go away," Muzan ordered, though what Kokubisho had said had hit a bit too close to home. He did feel like he'd forgotten a lot, but then again he still didn't feel any familiarity to this man and wouldn't he, if he'd known him? 

Michika glanced one more time at Muzan before turning and leaving with a defeated look in his posture. 

Muzan rolled his eyes. This was so stupid. So fucking stupid.

Kokushibo was practically in tears when he arrived home to a curious Yoriichi.

"What happened?" Yoriichi asked, concerned.

"He... forgot everything," the former demon said, his voice quiet. 

"Oh?" 

"He forgot me too," Michikatsu said, slumping down on a chair.

"Do you... still like him?" Yoriichi asked hesitantly, confused.

His brother looked up, his eyes teary. "I..." 

"Hm?" Yoriichi moved over, embracing him.

"I do," Michikatsu admitted quietly. "Yes, yes I do. I really do..!"

Yoriichi gave him a sympathetic look. "And..."

"And he doesn't remember me," he finished, his voice tight with sorrow. "He doesn't remember me at all."

Nakime waited outside the hospital room anxiously as she watched Michikatsu storm out. She was allowed inside, finally, by a woman with her black hair tied back. 

"Thank you," Nakime said, smiling. 

She walked in and saw an irritated-looking Muzan sitting on his bed.

"Muzan?" she said tentatively. 

He looked up. "Are you here to convince me that you know me?" he asked, huffing. 

Nakime looked taken aback before she realized this must be the reason Michikatsu had left so upset. "No, ah... I was the one who found you when you'd gotten hurt and I was, uhm, given your name. So I wanted to check on you," she said, which was partially a lie but besides the part about now knowing him, it was true. 

He looked relieved at that and nodded stifly. "Then, thank you, I suppose, if you really were the one to save me. Do you know how I got hurt?" he asked, looking confused. "I don't remember much."

Nakime averted her eyes, not really wanting to answer. But Muzan pressed her to tell him until she finally gave up. "You were... found at the bottom of a cliff. There really wasn't any way that you'd've been able to get there given that where you were was way off the path under it. I honestly think that you wouldn't have been found if I'd not been on a walk there... it was so far out. Besides that, the impact of all your wounds could only have happened if you'd... fallen off the cliff." She hesitated then, although eventually the reason why became clear.

Muzan's eyes met hers and he saw how sad her expression looked. Putting two and two together, he mumbled, "So I was trying to kill myself?"

Nakime nodded solemnly, drawing her gaze away from his. "That's what we think. Nobody wanders up that hill for mindless activity, it's not safe there anyways."

"Oh."

Silence stretched across the room for a long time and they both just stared at the ground in silence, unsure what to think of anything.

Then Nakime said, rather abruptly, "I'll leave you here then, I suppose..."

Muzan nodded, then paused. "Wait!" he said before she reached the door.

"Hm?" She turned back curiously.

"Do I... Did I know you?" he asked cautiously. "I don't seem to rememeber anything and the man who came in before you insisted that he knew me... I don't recognise either of you but I wanted to know..."

Nakime gave him a pitiful look. "I don't want to force you to believe it, but you did know both me and Michikatsu. You knew him as Kokushibo. And I as Nakime." She took let out a soft breath. "You were quite fond of Kokushibo," she murmured before turning and leaving, closing the door behind her.

Muzan looked down at the blanket draped over his body. So that was why Michika had been so insistent? How fond of him had he been?

Okay I can’t not say something…

… I dunno what’s going on in Geats. I’m not watching it. Sounds like my man Michianga is getting some shit which sucks, when will Takahashi treat the purple guys right???

I say, not even sure I’m spelling his name right.

But I genuinely cannot believe people are still trying to come for Horobi on this.

So let’s clear some things up.

1) Horobi was absolutely set up. Probably wasn’t the Ark’s plan from the start exactly, but she knowingly made him dependent on her and psychologically abused and manipulated him for years. Disconnected from her, Horobi was unstable and trying to grapple w/ trying to think for himself. He was heavily traumatised and easily manipulated, making him the perfect patsy. All she had to do was poke Izu’s blind devotion to Aruto a bit and have her use her usual brand of insensitive, socially unaware ‘help.’ That situation was absolutely orchestrated.

2) Is two things. Izu could easily have dodged that shot and choose not to, and Horobi had no reason to think she had no backup (which was ridiculous to begin w/). He’d made it very clearly he considered backups to be a form of immortality for ai, and we have no clue how he would have reacted if she dodged bc she choose not to. Obviously Horobi ‘shouldn’t’ have resorted to violence to ‘end’ that interaction, but he was not in a mental place where he could make that distinction. It’s all he’s ever known, it’s predominately the only way anyone has ever treated him. He was panicked and she was harassing him. He was desperate to end the interaction in anyway possible, and he’d already tried walking away. But there is no way he ‘knew’ he was ‘killing’ her (and, well… He didn’t). He actually seems genuinely shaken that she just took the hit, being unable to respond to Jin’s question (which he always has before). He wasn’t planning on ‘killing’ her at all, he just needed her to stop. She also choose to go in there in the first place. That’s like… Not to compare any of these characters to dogs in that way, but that’s like a domesticated Pomeranian walking into a playpen w/ a recently ‘rescued’ wolf that’s been abused and used in fighting rings and trying to play and being shocked it got bitten.

3) There were so many people who could have done something. Jin, who’s been so ready to take hits for people he barely knows before, just stands there. There were plenty of humans around! Fuwa and Yua, who started this whole damn thing, were nowhere to be seen, and Fuwa had an opportunity to stop the fighting and fucked it up. Like I absolutely believe there’s a correlation between Fuwa shooting Horobi for asking him that question and Horobi shooting at Izu to get her to stop provoking him. Aruto himself is more busy trying to force the HumaGear outside to go back to how he thinks they should be then dealing w/ the actual root of the situation. If he actually cared as much as he claims, maybe he’d realise how much suffering Horobi is going through and actually try to address the situation, rather than leaving it to his secretary who is in no way capable of doing so?

Basically, the fact of the matter is that this was not Horobi killing Izu in cold blood, it was more equivalent to a wounded animal trying to defend itself. She choose to go in there, back him into a corner, and choose not to back off when she saw he was becoming agitated. She choose not to dodge. He fired back in an attempt to end the interaction, bc she was doing more harm than help. Ultimately, I’m not trying to pin this on her, either, although I have Issues w/ how she was portrayed. Izu was never going to be able to help Horobi there bc she just could not understand what he was going through. In her mind, devotion to Aruto makes everything right, Aruto is the absolute best thing ever. And that’t not her fault, that was how she was made, and he inadvertently groomed her into that. But let’s not get me started on Aruto. The fact of the matter is that this was literally everyone’s fault. Well, it’s Gai and the Ark’s fault (bc the Ark is Gai’s fault), but if Horobi and even Izu herself had done nothing different but someone else present actually used their common sense for five seconds, this would never have happened.

Literally, this is saying that a traumatised, abused child soldier lashing out bc they feel backed into a corner and scared out of their minds is deliberately aggressive. Horobi was protecting himself the only way he knew how, Izu was (unintentionally, like she meant well but meaning well does not equate to doing well) harassing and provoking him and randomly decided not to dodge for some inconceivable reason, and everyone else decided that clearly, the sheltered ai w/ limited world experience and knowledge was obviously the right person to deal w/ the traumatised, abused, unstable one.

Also Fuwa and Yua started it and Fuwa had a chance to stop the fighting and fucked it up. An in character fuck up, maybe, but a fuck up. Aruto was more bothered w/ getting his free labour back than helping the traumatised child soldier. Jin randomly decides to be useless.

Edit: bc I realise I forgot them, Naki and Ikazuchi aren’t even there, they just show up to talk shit later like what the fuck guys maybe actually make and effort before you start badmouthing your supposed family member who you know has been horribly abused and mind controlled all his life.

GAI AND THE ARK.

Aaaaand… I’m not talking about after bc I think I’ve ruffled enough feathers.

Basically, while the situation in Geats does sound much more straightforward, I will not stand for people depicting Horobi as some knowingly malicious killer when he was very clearly not in a space where he could or knew how to make those calls. The man had only just gotten disconnected from the Ark, he was just learning how to make decisions. He didn’t ‘choose’ to ‘kill’ Izu, he acted on an instinct to protect himself out of fear and then he himself did not understand his actions.

Last night I was in a panic because Bug ate too much food at once and horked it up (not unusual, but he kept going until there was nothing left which IS unusual) so today I laid the cats’ food out on an old baking sheet to hopefully keep him from shoveling kibble into his oversized Gremlin Gob.
