Learning new languages can be hard, especially when it comes to memorizing new vocabulary, but getting your kids started on Mandarin early will give them an edge over other students’ later in life and show them how much of the world there is still left to explore. With that in mind, we have come up with this guide on learning essential animals and their Mandarin names so your kids can get familiar with some of the most commonly used Chinese animal terminology. So turn on some Mandarin music, learn these animal names with your children, and enjoy!

How to Pronounce Some Common Chinese Animal Names?

虎 Tiger (hu)虎 is pronounced hoo and is also an onomatopoeia for tiger sounds. Imagine you're petting your very own tiger, hoo-hoo-hoo-hoooooooowwwwwwling right into his furry little ear...

龙 Dragon (long): We've all seen a dragon at some point in our lives. If not, it's probably because they're hiding under our beds. The dragon has long been revered as one of China's most iconic symbols. It's also one of its oldest mythical creatures, appearing in many ancient texts like The Classic of Mountains and Seas.

狗 Dog (gou)狗 sounds like gǒu, which is pronounced like cow.

兔 Rabbit (tu): 兔 sounds like tù, which has no other rhymes.

马 Horse (ma): 马 sounds just like mǎ, as in more or maid. 猴 Monkey (hou): 猴 rhymes with gou.

SAY THEIR NAMES

Animals have all sorts of different names. Learning these names is an important way to help your kids expand their vocabulary and foster a positive relationship with animals. Start by saying an animal's name aloud. Then, ask your kids if they know what kind of animal you're talking about. You can also ask them if they know that name in another language or spell it out for them!

MAKE ANIMAL SOUNDS

Make animal sounds as you watch a nature show or play with your pet; that way, they’ll begin to associate these sounds with a certain animal. Introduce them to their first animals—dogs, cats, rabbits, etc.—and then when you come across those animals in real life, it’ll be easier for them to remember and recognize their names. For instance, whenever you see a dog on walks or at friends’ houses or even just on television commercials (which happens quite often), point out and make noises like woof woof! That kind of repetition will start forming stronger connections in their minds. Include everyday vocabulary words: Incorporate short daily lessons in your family routine by teaching them new words throughout the day.

ASK WHAT OTHER THINGS THEY CAN FIND WITH THAT ANIMAL’S NAME

Ask your child what animals or things he/she can find with that animal’s name. If you look around enough, there will be plenty of items for your child to recognize that all have an animal’s name. For example, if you ask What is a dog? and your child replies Doggy! (or some other variation), then begin pointing out dogs everywhere – in magazines, cartoons and so on. Not only will they begin associating dog names with real life objects, but they may even point them out when they don’t know what they are called yet!

TELL THEM A STORY WITH AN ANIMAL IN IT

Stories are a great way for kids to learn new information. When you’re reading a story with your children, be sure that one of the characters in it is an animal (make sure your kids can identify them by their sounds or any other distinguishing features). Stop during key parts of the story and ask your kids which animal they think is on page and why. After you’ve finished reading, be sure to let them know if they were right (and if not, explain why). This will not only help build their confidence when identifying animals but also give them an excuse to re-read favorite stories over and over again.

HAVE A SONG WITH ANIMALS IN IT

One way to teach your kids animal names is by playing them a song with a few animals in it. You can either sing it or let them hear someone else sing it, but if you can find one, use a song that also involves animals and has visuals on screen. The tune will stick in their head and remind them of each animal as they hear about its name! If you don’t have any songs like that, here are two examples: The Friendly Beasts from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood and Zoo Lullaby from Sesame Street. (Note: both songs are long, so use caution while watching videos with young children.)

PLAY A GAME WHERE YOU MOVE LIKE AN ANIMAL

Dance parties are a fun way to get your kids active, and they can also be a great excuse for family bonding time. This kind of dance party is more about fun than learning, but it’s an easy way to get your kids thinking about what animals do. For example, you might start by dancing like a dog shaking off water or then discuss how dogs shake and what other actions dogs take when they are wet. From there, move on to cats grooming themselves or raccoons washing their food in rivers (or whatever animal comes up in conversation). The key is that you encourage talking as much as possible—this is where true learning happens!

PLAY AN ANIMAL GUESSING GAME

Take out cards with different types of animals on them, let your child look at them, then shuffle them around and have him/her guess what kind of animal is on each card. First you get to pick out three kinds of animals (your kid only gets one free guess), then five kinds, and finally eight different kinds. If your child doesn’t know an animal name when she first sees it, there’s a good chance she won’t recognize it later in life! You can also play a version where you put pictures up on a flashcard device or whiteboard—and ask her to tell you words that start with specific letters.

GO ON WALKS AND TALK ABOUT DIFFERENT ANIMALS YOU SEE

Talking about animal names is a great way to help kids learn. Take them on walks around your neighborhood and point out different types of animals. Then, ask your child if they know what it’s called. This will force them to listen for details and repeat them back correctly. For example, you might ask your kid if they can identify a dog or cat by name or by appearance. By listening carefully, they’ll learn that there are many varieties of dogs or cats! If you start with easy ones like dog and cat, they’ll grow accustomed to recognizing them faster when they see another variety in public!

THE BOTTOM LINE:

It can be fun to teach your kids animal names because not only do they learn a new word, but they also learn the sound it makes! How might a clan go about naming point cats? Point cats are born all white, but a clan familiar with points/a clan that has a good amount of points will probably know that the kittens are due to develop colours, however, not know WHICH colours the points will be until the cat is older. It's a lot of trouble to change multiple entire litters' names once their points come in. Would they just use white names? What if parents anticipate a point and give a point name but the cat stays white? Thanks
