please think about how toriel exists as a purposeful venture by toby fox to create a "mom" character who isn't just there to write letters to the protagonist offscreen and act as motivation for them even though we barely know her and actually reacts realistically when innocent children leave her safe home to go on a dangerous adventure because of the inherent and rarely-explored grief and tragedy that come with being such a character in a video game, to be powerless to do anything but watch as both your children sacrifice themselves for a cause they ABSOLUTELY should not have to die for at their age, because that's your only role in the narrative, and you're the "mom," just there to make them pie, and whenever you find another child they always ALWAYS leave you in the same way and die and you feel like you keep losing second and third and fourth etc etc chances. if only you could redeem yourself. if you can save even a single child, that will make it okay, right? that will mean there is hope for you. this time will be different, you'll see. you'll destroy the exit to the ruins. you'll never let asriel and chara your dear fallen wards go again.

moreover, please think about how in deltarune chapter 3, toriel will almost certainly be a major part of the adventure. she will get to accompany her beloved child as they explore a strange, daunting new world, bond with them, learn more about their delightful new friend, FINALLY she will not have to simply stand there in the shadows. the tragedy of the nameless mother who never gets to look after her child in video games as they fight has been explored thoroughly, and now we can delve into something both delightful and potentially even MORE heartbreaking: the mother who HAS to watch her child fight.

on an unrelated note, y'know how the game over screen in chapter 2 has whatever companion you're with begging kris to wake up get up as they lie there, ostensibly dead?

I present to your attention the last member of The Nameless Quartet, and the main reason why I did not want to post my work is Black. Of all the company, this particular character was created by me. She was created in the strangest way, while I was watering vegetables in the garden. And the big problem with this character is my desire to constantly redo her story, design and character. At such moments, I felt like X!Gaster who was trying to achieve some kind of ideal. And in the end, I decided to focus on one of the very first versions of the plot.

What is the idea of her world:

After the war of humans and monsters, the first person falls into the dungeon. Chara gets into the monsters and their problem and really wants to help them get free. And then the royal scientist Gaster suggests one risky experiment. Try to create a creature based on the soul of a human and a monster that can go beyond the barrier, collect the necessary souls and destroy the barrier. It would seem why it was impossible to simply give the Chara's soul to someone for absorption, or for the person himself to absorb the soul of the monster, which was a rare phenomenon. The answer was the concern of the royal family about Chara's life. What was the probability that someone else would fall after her and make contact with monsters at the same time? Very small. That's why Chara agreed to this experiment. Sans, Gaster's adopted son, was chosen as the monster for her partner. Skeletons are the most human-like monsters. That's why the choice fell on him.

But during the experiment, something went wrong. Chara suddenly turned from a state of determination to hatred. She remembered how cruel the people around her were, that it was because of them that she decided to jump into the dungeon. "People are the cause of all the troubles in this world." Hatred of them caused the machine through which the experiment was conducted to malfunction and as a result, instead of a man and a monster, only a small gray skeleton remained, which began to show signs of life. The experiment spawned a creature called Black. Her soul, instead of determination or the usual soul of a monster, was a bundle of hatred. The royal family was unhappy with the result, especially Asriel, for whom Chara was a new member of the family, whom he loved very much.

But nevertheless, Black was able to cope with the task for which she was created. She crossed the barrier and did what was required of her. The barrier was destroyed. However, by the time she returned to the dungeon, Gaster had fallen into the core and the memory of him, as well as his experiment, was gone from everyone. As a result, Black had to survive in the doorways of both underground cities and those that were built on the outskirts of the mountain. For the sake of survival, she had to steal, from which she soon developed a tendency to kleptomania. The only monster she came into contact with was Papyrus, with whom she developed a friendly and trusting relationship.

But at the moment, the skeleton lives on an island under a tree. And what kind of tree is this, how Black was able to travel to other AU and put together an Unnamed Quartet, you will find out in the future or if you ask a question on this topic.

Speaking of Black herself, it is worth noting her smallness. She is lower than the original Sans and even has a little complex because of this. Nevertheless, her height allows her to penetrate narrow spaces and be more maneuverable. She is the closest to Volt in age, which is why these two have become real friends who like to annoy the "old men" Kyle and Dark. It was this energetic person who gathered all these skeletons and periodically (forces) invites them to hang out together.

But no one from the whole company still trusts each other one hundred percent, so everyone hides their skeleton in the closet.

Part 1 and Part 2 of this journey

Good afternoon. Today I have made little progress on the sprites due to classwork, only finishing the ones for Asriel releasing the Human SOULs within him

(The outlines are blue because in-game it happens against a pitch-black background. If you look at the official Undertale spritesheets, there Asriel’s sprite is outlined with that same shade of blue, for that exact reason)

But I also have a separate thing to add. Yesterday I called this AU an unnecessarily long name because it didn’t have an official one, so today I decided to propose a proper name for the AU, for my own convenience. Comatale was my first choice, obvio, but apparently that’s taken (as well as literally every combination of [Word]tale or Under[word] imaginable), so I decided to look for some creativity. The best I have for now is Tale Of The Living Prince, which isn’t great, but it’s not actively bad either. It doesn’t seem to be taken either, so I think it can be used

"The Collectors"

While we're impatiently waiting for Book 3 of The Book of Dust, Philip Pullman is releasing minibooks in the HDM universe. I just got the latest one, "The Collectors." So of course I was curious to see if there's any literary alchemy in it.

The book is set in Oxford but seemingly not in either Lyra's world or ours (Will's). It features two unfamiliar characters, Oxford don Horley and his friend Grinstead. The HDM universe gets tied in when Grinstead tells about his encounter with Mrs. Coulter, who seems to have travelled to his world as a young woman. (More on this below.) Actually present in "The Collectors" is not Marisa herself but a painting of her.

This is a real 1932 painting by the artist Balthus, "Portrait de la jeune fille en costume d'amazone". Balthus was influenced by Chirico and other surrealists, and as @ssmhhh has pointed out, surrealism drew heavily on alchemical symbolism. You can see the basic colors of alchemy in the painting: black, white, red, and gold. But there's an even more intriguing connection between Balthus and alchemy: his son, Stanislaus Klossowski de Rola, is the author of two important collections of alchemical images and a frequent contributor to Adam McLean's alchemywebsite.com.

So my question is did Pullman have this painting in mind when he created Mrs. Coulter in the first book? Blond hair is often a marker for the White character, so Nicole Kidman was a better choice, lookswise, than Ruth Wilson. Or did Pullman just come across the painting recently and say hey--that looks like my idea of a young Marisa?

The book is profusely illustrated with line drawings by Tom Duxbury. Here you see Horley and Grinstead looking at the painting--and the statue of a monkey that strangely always ends up coming into the possession of whoever owns the painting. (This is an obvious reference to Mrs. Coulter's nameless golden monkey daemon.)

Grinstead immediately recognizes the woman in the painting as his long ago lover, whom he knew as Marisa van Zee. "Van Zee" is basically the Dutch translation of her French maiden name, "Delamare," so even as Marisa traveled to this other world, she kept her marking as water. Her role in HDM is Argentvive/mercury, white, water and earth, and her destiny is to join with Asriel (sulphur, red, fire and air) in a Chemical Wedding that produces the Philosophical Child, Lyra.

Grinstead's other revelation is that Marisa was able to manipulate time, or at least that time in her world progressed at a different pace than in his and Horsley's. "Time passes differently in different worlds," Grimstead explains (p. 42). This may be a stretch but consider: What alchemists do is speed up time. They believed metals were living things, growing inexorably to perfection, to becoming gold. The alchemist creates the Philosopher's Stone to vastly accelerate that process, to turn base metals into gold.

The fact that time passes differently in different worlds may have important ramifications in the final book.

So yes, Pullman is still writing literary alchemy.

A Pokemon crossover AU (tentatively named Your Courage Will Pull Us Through) where monsters are the missing evolutionary link between humans and Pokemon and the evil Team SOUL wants to imprison them in pokeballs

A traveller crossover AU aka shlock Undertale (tentatively named Voyages of the Starship Ebott) where monsters have lost their home planet and been driven out of their star system by the evil Third Imperium. To find it and bring it back to where it belongs, an ancient and powerful monster starship has set out on a mission bearing the estranged, tentatively allied King and Queen of monsters, two psionically skilled skeletons, a monster supersoldier created by the Imperium and on the run after stealing herself from the unethical Project DT (she also spent some time finding herself with the space wolf furry antifa pirates), a once-normal scientist who got in over her head spying on Project DT, a robotic galaxywide social media influencer who secretly isn't a sapient AI, and a normal human kid who can talk to ghosts. The ghosts have been muttering the name of a forgotten star in a barren, distant, system, but can the TMS Ebott make it across a galaxy at war to find out what waits in orbit around Chara? An alphynecentric magical girl AU based on a genderqueer reinterpretation of genre classics like Sailor Moon. When the famous magical girl known as Girl Indigo falls from the sky with a ruined eye, her ordinary high school classmate takes up the responsibility of taking her place while she heals. With a magical dragon mask that lets her transform into Girl Golden, Alphys learns on the fly how to be a magical girl from her hero, while Undyne just might find out what it's like to be a normal high schooler with a crush on the smartest girl in school... (Also Papyrus is a genderqueer magical girl, Asriel is an evil magical girl, and Chara Frisk and Kris are the cutest little ominous shapeshifting animal guides youve ever seen.)

A storyshift-at-home AU (tentatively titled Poemshift) with slightly different swaps (instead of Mettaton and Napstablook being the fallen children, Undyne and Alphys are and there's a secondary set of swaps that includes a bunch of ghosts and minibosses and shopkeepers and stuff that I haven't quite decided on yet) (also Toriel is a scientist and Asgore a guard, why would it be the other way around). No idea really what to say about this one as it's my newest concept but im like the ceo of swapping characters so you have to trust me anyway

The nameless beast that took over Asriel made sure to prolong their stay this time. Her body grew hundreds of more feet as more muscle formed on her. She stepped her foot on entire block and inhaled a fleeing airplane.

The Royals:

King Asgore:

Before the war, goat monsters like him were pretty common and they were mostly associated with nobility. He is the last surviving member of the original royal family and tried to postpone as much as he could his duties as new King.

He eventually accepted his position, when he understood that winning the war wasn't the end of their trouble. (And by pressure of the council)

Fell in love with Toriel, but didn't really confess until the war was over. Luckily for him, she accepted his feelings.

Is mostly kept in the dark about the groups of monsters who have been abusing their humans, as the information loses itself on the process of registry.

Was the one who decided to adopt Chara and also the one who decided to hide evidence after 'the situation'.

Plants are his jam and you'll definitely see him at his garden in his spare time, which is not much tbh

Personally, he is not in charge of any slaves, despite the technicalities saying The Crown owns all of them. To solve this, he has 'The Seven Chosen'. These slaves are linked to Toriel's magic, but only serve him. They can be swapped from times to times.

Toriel:

Daughter of a Count. Was supposed to marry one of Asgore's older brothers, but he died during the war. She didn't mind that much, to be fair, it was just an arranged marriage.

Served as a Asgore's light during his darkest times, which kept them going strong as a couple when the war ended.

Humans have a high sense of respect towards her because of her kind ways and gentle guidance.

She is in charge of several slaves(number is not exact). She wears a big bracelet with several linkstones attached to it.

Was the one who found out about 'the situation'.

Has verbally opposed the council loud and clear when they decided to apply the punishment to her children.

With the punishment being applied anyway, she became emotionally distant and most of her smiles are faked. She mastered the ability to do it so, though.

Asriel:

As a perfect blend of his parents, Asriel inherited the kindness, the nurturing nature and the sense of duty. He brought light to the palace when he was born, as he was curious and pleasant to stay around of. He had plenty of acquaintances.

Acquaintances. No friends. There was this stupid barrier between him and most monsters his age. Their parents would tell them, naturally, that they were supposed to treat him with utmost respect and that often meant that kids would allow him to win the games. Barely touch him in fears of 'tainting him'. Never, ever tease him in fears of being sent to the mage tower. Those were... Shallow friendships. And he hated it.

One day, when he was on his father's garden, he met a human. Said human had no magic rune on his body to affirm he was part of the slave program. He also seemed to be way too thin and dirty. Not to mention- Hurt! Asriel helped the human and they became friends.

Not just acquaintances. Friends. This human treated him normally. Without worrying about his position or title. Maybe even, he wasn't even aware of it. This nameless human, was just the right amount of annoying and touching and fun he needed.

Asriel soon found a place for this human to stay inside the palace, a room of his own and for some time, it was a fantasy. Their own world.

But they were found eventually.

Asgore and Toriel were surprised in many levels. A human with no identification and no name. A person who their son actually managed to connect. More than that... That human had magic on them. In fact, he were so powerfully magical, one could have mistaken his for a boss monster, if magic was the only thing taken in consideration. He was also charming and easy to talk to.

The human was named Chara and instead of sticking him into the slave program, they had a better plan. They would make Chara their own son. Asriel's brother. He was obviously the most ecstatic about that.

Chara

Before coming to the castle, Chara lived with his mother inside the forest. She hated monsters. Her monster owner at the time used to hurt her. But he would do that in such subtle ways that there was no way to detect it in the monthly checkup. The monster doctor in charge of her area, also didn't seem very keen on humans' wellbeing.

She fell in love with another slave and they kept a forbidden relationship that ultimately resulted on her pregnancy. They decided to run away from the monsters, hiding on the forest. Her lover was killed during the chase and she managed to stay alive, but had to live on her own. Including her labor.

She made it sure for Chara that monsters were bad and he was supposed to fear them. Hate them.

Hating monsters he did. Despite having never seen one before. When his mother died - mostly out of starvation - he understood he could no longer stay on the forest only.

He advanced towards the city. Especially at the palace's garden. No one really guarded there because there was no threats.

There, he met Asriel. Asriel was too nice. He couldn't be out like this. What if the monsters got him? He barely could believe when he told him that he was a monster himself. No way. Monsters were bad.

That was their only disagreement.

Eventually, he was adopted by the royals. They were so nice. So kind. He came to love them, despite the voice of his dead mother chastising him for befriending the enemy.

He could feel the dirty looks, though. From monsters and humans alike. Who he thought he was? How come a lowly human like him, (uneducated at that!), become part of the very royal family?

Was he bad?

No. Asgore said he wasn't. Toriel reassured he wasn't. Asriel believed he wasn't.

But he definitely knew. There were bad monsters out there and he wanted to catch them.

OH.... okay... so I learned I have been misinformed about the title of exactly what I experience. I am actually apart of the kin community and had no idea.
