A Lord by any other Name. ___
JOKE-OGRAPHY: In this cartoon a young Jesus visits John the Baptist, His cousin, and the two greet each other with much joy.  They begin by shouting each other's names, then switch to parodying each other's names back and forth, coming up with a ridiculous list of aliases.  Their mothers, St. Elizabeth and the Blessed Virgin Mary, just watch the naming convention being held before them.

Protean Anagram Solutions
When I started making proteans last summer, I decided to name them all after a person, shuffling the letters in the name to make an anagram. I challenged my followers to figure out who each protean was named after.
So here's the solutions. Some of these people got when the monsters were originally posted. Others I got no replies on.
Tumblr media
The temortanga, protean of fashion, was named after Stefani Germanotta, aka Lady Gaga
Tumblr media
The alengos, protean of plant life and ecology, was named after Henry Gleason, an ecologist who argued against a universal "climax community" and that every ecosystem had a unique balance of plant life.
Tumblr media
The ricretillo, protean of weather, air and water, was named after Evangelista Torricelli, who invented the barometer and was the first to explain how winds form from differences in air pressure and temperature.
Tumblr media
The cthilpuk, protean of emotions and moods, was named after Robert Plutchik, who created a psychological classification for emotions.
Tumblr media
The yexhul, protean of evolution and animal life, was named after the Huxley clan, particularly Thomas Henry Huxley, first generation evolutionary biologist, and his grandsons Julian (a eugenicist) and Aldous (who parodied eugenics in Brave New World as a dig at his brother).
Tumblr media
The heputwisa, protean of conspiracies and lies, was named after Adam Weishaupt, founder of the Bavarian Illuminati.
Tumblr media
The renegwe, protean of plate tectonics, earth and fire was named after Alfred Wegener, proponent of continental drift

Hello, I hope you're doing fine!
I was wondering if you know how the names on jerseys work for spanish players? Cause there's those who got their first names on the back (Alexia, Aitana, Patri..) but also some using their last names (like Irene). And then there's Mapi or Cata. I don't really get it and the Internet hasn't really been helpful, can they like choose what they prefer?
yes, so it can be a little confusing, but this is common with spain, portugal, brazil, and players from latin america too because our naming conventions are different than like in uk and us.
fc barcelona wrote an article a little while ago to explain.
but yes! essentially it comes down to player preference! that's why players can choose their first names, nicknames, mother's last name, father's last name. it's really up to them. there's no one way to do it, and it's not based on regional differences or anything like that in spain, which is why alexia goes by "alexia" and ona batlle chooses "o. batlle." hope that helps!

Formula 1 Car Naming Conventions
With F1 car launches in full force, I have been looking into why teams name their cars the way that they do. Each team has a different naming convention. Some of the naming conventions are easy to understand like RB19. Then there are the many Ferrari naming conventions (SF-23, F1-75, SF1000, etc).
So here are the current naming conventions for each team in order of car launch dates.
Haas
The 2024 Haas car is called the VF-24.
In an article for the 2016 Haas Car Launch, it was explained why they named the car the VF-16.
The first CNC machine manufactured by Haas Automation in 1988. It was unofficially named the VF-1, otherwise known as the Very First 1. For Formula 1, Haas kept the VF and changed the 1 for the last two digits of the year. VF-16 = 2016, VF-23 = 2023, etc.
Williams
The 2024 Williams car is called the FW46.
Every car by Williams has carried the FW prefix, with the first one being the FW06 in 1978. The FW in the name stands for the founder of the team, Sir Frank Williams. Despite the Williams family no longer being involved in the team, the current owners have kept the naming convention as a link to the storied history of Williams Racing.
If the car keeps the same chassis as the previous year, then a B is added to the end of the name to show that it is a B-Spec car (and on a few occasions there have been C-Spec cars).
Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber
The 2024 Sauber car is called the C44.
Sauber made its debut with the C12 in 1993 and has since used this naming convention except for the BMW Sauber years. But after BMW left, Sauber returned to using C and picked up the numbers where it would have been if the naming convention hadn't changed.
The C stands for Peter Sauber's wife Christiane. His first car was called the C1 and since then all Sauber cars (with the exception of the BMW Sauber cars) have used the C for Christiane.
Alpine
The 2024 Alpine car is called the A524.
Since Renault became Alpine in 2021, all of their cars have had the following naming formula: A + 5 + the last two digits of the year.
In January 2021, the team explained why the 2021 car was called the A521. The A is for Alpine. The 5 is for A500, which was a prototype for the 1975 F1 season. All of the cars since 2021, have followed this naming convention and have just changed the 21 to correspond with the current year.
Visa Cash App RB
The Visa Cash App RB 2024 car is called the VCARB 01.
There really isn't much about the team as of right now due to the rebrand changing up everything from the previous AlphaTauri stuff. However, VCARB is the acronym for the team name and this is the first car to be run under the rebrand, thus the 01.
Aston Martin
The Aston Martin 2024 car is called the AMR24.
Since 2021, Aston Martin has used the same naming convention: AMR + the last 2 digits of the current year. The AMR stands for Aston Martin Racing.
Ferrari
The 2024 Ferrari car is named the SF-24.
However, unlike the other teams, it is hard to predict what the Ferrari will be named. In recent years, there have been the F1-75, SF21, SF1000, SF90, F14-T, and 150º Italia just to list a few of the names.
For 2024, it is a simple naming convention that has been used in the past. SF = Scuderia Ferrari and then the last two digits of the year the car will be run.
RacingNews365 made a chart of every Ferrari car since 2000 and the meaning behind the name. For the most part, the formula for naming the car is either Ferrari/Scuderia Ferrari + year or important event commemoration.
Tumblr media
Ferrari also uses the dash inconsistently which doesn't really mean anything, but is just not the most aesthetically pleasing when looking at a list of all the car names.
Mercedes
The 2024 Mercedes car is called the W15.
All Mercedes cars have had a W in the car name, even the 1954 and 1955 cars. The 2010 Mercedes car was the W01 and since then the team has continued chronologically.
The W stands for Wagen which means car in German.
McLaren
The 2024 McLaren car is called the MCL38.
The numbers have been ascending since almost the beginning with a few B-Spec cars for the most part. However, the beginning letters have changed over the years. Since 2017, McLaren has used MCL. And just as it looks, MCL is short for McLaren.
The 2023 car didn't have the chronological number due to honoring McLaren's 60 years of history.
Red Bull
The 2024 Red Bull car is named the RB 20.
Since its first year, the Red Bull cars have been given the RB designation along with a chronologically ascending number. The RB as expected stands for Red Bull.
The RB 20 marks 20 seasons of Red Bull in Formula One.

Pokemon Villain Team Name Poll
So, I'm running a freeform Pokemon RPG. And I'm introducing an original villain team soon. They're themed around technocracy, and their leader is going by the alias Iron Moth, inspired by the Paradox Pokemon. So, what would be the best name for the team as a whole?

So...in the Poly Morning Crew | God's AU I'm writing (Aiera), I have made the very wise decision of going insane and do this with every singole name:
-find something that sounds similar in Proto-Indoeuropean
-it has to be something that has a meaning that is appropriate to the character
-make a new cool Proto-Indoeuropean name for the cubito!
Chaos ensues

Finished reading through the Dungeon Meshi Adventurer's Bible last night. Very good, very interesting
One book down in my to-read pile... 7 to go lol
But! Something is bothering me about Half-foot naming conventions
The book says their names are like
FirstLast Father(s/z)
Ex. ChilChuck Tims
But Chilchuck's daughters are
Meijack Chils
Flertom Chils
Puckpatti Chils
(Or Chilz, couldn't find a definitive answer on how they write the father's name part)
So they all have different 'Last' names. Jack, Tom, Patti. All sisters with different 'last' names
So is it more like... a middle name? A second name? Then why does the book call it a 'last' name... especially when the father's name comes after??
Make it make sense

For science!
And I've run out of options, so I'm really sorry about the lack of granularity wrt regions. I've picked the regions by population, to the best of my knowledge.
Please reblog for a bigger sample size, and please tag details in tags, if you want!

I find it hilarious that in canon Spock basically never ever uses his house name, Amanda references it but says she doesn't use it and prefers to be called Amanda, and yet the fandom cannot resist bringing it up.
Personally, I think Vulcans almost never use it, probably only when there happen to be two Spocks in a room at a time. They are largely one-name people. (Which is why Spock struggles with the concept that he has to call Jim one thing on the bridge and a completely different thing in his quarters.)
But humans, being humans with our human naming conventions, are just like "well he's GOT to have two names!"
Just like how Kirk keeps calling Amanda "Mrs. Sarek." Oh yeah? Let's call you Mrs. Spock, see how you like it 🤣

The Watergate Scandal from 1972 was such a controversial and important event that, half a century later, English speaking media still tends to nickname scandals and controversies as "(something key to the scandal)+gate".
It has become so common that, perhaps, many people don't even question it, like "well that's how journalists name scandals", thinking it could be just part of their slang.
However, one thing that makes it funny is that the reason why the Watergate Scandal is named this way is that the events started unfolding in the Watergate Complex, in Washington. It just so happens that the place has a name that looks like (something important)+gate.
As a result, due to how scandal naming works now, I bet there's some people who believe that the Watergate Scandal has something to do with water, and I find this rather amusing.

The Names of Yedru-Har
While in other lands, a man shares one name with his ancestors and bears one of his own, distant Yedru-Har has never seen the wisdom of such a system. What kind of men live beyond their borders, that who they are is determined by the choices of their fathers and grandfathers alone?
Instead, in Yedru-Har each name consists of two numbered parts; one might be named Seven Windows and Two Lamps, Countless Fruits and Sixteen Dewdrops, or Three Axes, Three Streams. Though this system vexes foreigners to no end, there is a simple and elegant logic to it.
First, the names of peasants, which are simple enough. Two names are given upon birth, one by the father and one by the mother, and the 'countless' numerator stands in front of both.
A peasant who is called upon to serve the nobility may, to denote this honor, bear the number of their house before one part of their name. Thus, if a woman called Countless Quills, Countless Blankets becomes a servant to the thirteenth house, her name would change to Thirteen Quills, Countless Blankets, or to Countless Quills, Thirteen Blankets, and remain fixed thereafter. Typically, a man places the number of the house before his father-given name, and a woman before her mother-given name, but this is not enforced and deviations are rarely remarked upon.
But as with any system, it is the nobility that enjoys the true benefits. Nobles have two names like all others, but prefix both names with a number. These numbers must sum to the rank of their house, but are otherwise freely assigned. Though newborns use even or near-even splits, many nobles will re-name themselves and shift the numbers to reflect changing philosophies, hopes or aspirations, or a favoring of either parent. When the poet Four Gestures, Three Lions fell deathly ill, a fortune-teller told him that his divided loyalties, strewn among many noble houses, had caused his sickness, and so he changed his name to Six Gestures, One Lion, and kept it ever after he recovered.
A noble who marries into another house keeps their names, but must change their numbers: if Twelve Stars, Four Coals marries into the eleventh house, his name might change to Nine Stars, Two Coals.
As the house of kings, the first house is endowed with two names like any other. However, this house is given the unique right to the number zero, which the First Great Sage conceived. A king, it is said, must be one thing or another thing: he cannot waver, nor can he change without making it apparent to all the world. The current king is Zero Hawks, One Flower, who changed her name twice: once upon her proclamation of war, and once upon its end.
The second house is unique, for it alone cannot change its names. This is because they are the house of sages, advisors, and priests, who must be the calm constancy to the king's resolve. Foremost among them is One Ruby, One Branch, vizier to the king and wiser than any other living soul.
There are over twenty other houses, though some numbers are set aside to be granted to those of appropriate virtue. It is understood by all that this system has great benefits, as it communicates an individual's names, but also their relative rank, their philosophy, and even tells us something of their father and mother both. Why the remainder of the world sticks to their obsolete way of naming things continues to perplex even the wisest of Yedru-Har's sages.

A random thought: salamanders in real life are vaguely lizardlike amphibians, while salamanders in mythology are fire spirits. What would you give as an alternate name for one or the other, so there wouldn't be any confusion between the two creatures?
If you're looking for an alternative name for elemental salamanders, go to the source! Paracelsus calls them vulcani in Latin, so vulcanus would be singular. Other options would be agni or tejas, which are Sanskrit names for elemental fire. Or, you could be cheeky, and call them lurchis, after a German salamander shoe mascot

Following your answer on JAFF first names, how likely is it that Mr Darcy senior is called George?
This question is in reference to this post.
I believe that one is pretty likely. Mr. Darcy Sr. is George Wickham's godfather (so possibly named in honour of him) and he has a daughter named Georgiana. His only son is named using his mother's last name so it's the father's "turn". I would say it's even more likely because of the massive age gap between Darcy and his sister, they probably weren't thinking there would be another living child.
We see gender-flip naming in Lady Susan, her daughter is named Frederica after her husband Frederick. We also see John Knightley naming the second boy after himself after the first is named for his father-in-law (Henry and John respectively).
Also, it would be so weird if George Wickham had married Georgiana and they were George & Georgiana... good thing Austen prevented that one. (I mean I know there were other reasons but still! lol) But with so many people with similar names in this era it must have happened. Henry & Henrietta,...
