Self Care Sunday - March 19th, 2023

Even though self care should be practiced daily from emotional, physical and spiritual standpoints, Sundays should be days you give yourself added grace and extra tender care for the week you’ve had. With “Self Care Picks,” we select songs from the previous week to help give you that refresh that your mind, body and soul deserve. Also included are three additional songs that accent the forms of self care needed for an additional boost to provide you with all you may require for what lies ahead in the week to come.

‘Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) [Cover]’ - When you think of Rock music, who comes to mind?! For us in this era of music there aren’t many true standouts but JonoJono delivered with a cover of Deftones’ 1997 Top 30 hit single ‘Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away).’ One of few Black rockstars today, JonoJono has something special and it can be heard in his most recent cover and previous work ‘Shadeless.’ JonoJono who is a Florida-born, Houston-raised singer, guitarist and producer has been influenced by the likes of Nirvana and Metallica to Erykah Badu and Frank Ocean, which can all be heard through his song selections.

‘Underwater’ - Surprisingly her debut single Ebun Yelé is a complete song of quintessence. Singing to be “let go” as her head is underwater, Yelé’s medley for closure is one of the most beautiful things you can hear as you exit a once toxic situation. 

‘Dream Hotel’ - While falling apart, Tayla Parx finds time to tell their side of the story of a broken relationship at the ‘Dream Hotel.’ Learning that it's okay (for now) time makes the situation and this song sound better.

‘Demon Time (Remix)’ - With new editions to her latest “The Hurtbook (Homegirl Pack)” Alex Vaughn may not be a psychic but she is a singer that delivers on every record she has put out including her recent collaborations with Muni Long, Summer Walker and Ari Lennox. Utilizing the power of a woman, these songs should be criminal for how well each came together. A three peat that will be long standing for some time. 

‘Away’ - Vintage in tone, Nikki Hayes provides something today’s music lacks in entirety and that is soul. Pairing with singer Damian C for her latest offering, Hayes blends their chemistry heard on the record and produces a duet that will stand the test of time. Weathering the storm from the moment the song begins, it leaves you wanting a second act as it comes to a vibrant close.

UK producer Hurricane provides the sounds for NanaBcool's inspiration that took place while he was walking around Amsterdam.
