Synopsis
As a writer for one of the top Parisian society gazettes, you've advised many readers about the up-and-coming artists of the Paris Salon. The best painters there know how to weave subtle enchantments into the likeness of their subject to make the image come to life but, recently, something had been going wrong with the magic. It's up to you to head to the academy and figure out to truth for yourself.
Setting
Set in Paris at the end of the 19th century, you will explore the city and the art exhibitions of the academy. This version of Paris has an undercurrent of magical power which artists use to create enchanted artwork for society.

Armand [M]
Occupation: Portrait Artist Artistic Inspiration: John Singer Sargent Armand has been passionate about art for most of his life and moved to Paris from New Orleans to start his studies when he was still young. Ok so I was perusing the NaNoWriMo website (I'm not taking part, I was just looking) and I found this:
"Think of it (writing a novel) like baking a cake. In the beginning, you’ve got nothing but a wish (to eat cake!). You figure out a recipe, gather ingredients, start mixing… Maybe you make some mistakes, have to re-measure, or improvise a new frosting. But as long as you keep working, you’ll eventually go from having nothing, to having a bowl of batter (yum), to having a cake of your very own. The trick is to break down a big job into smaller pieces, and to not get discouraged along the way."
And I would like to add that when you're baking sometimes you fuck it up so thoroughly that no frosting can save it. When that happens you just toss the cake, go to bed, and try again tomorrow.

For some reason, very few writing posts are about dialog. Like are you supposed to be naturally good at it, or just figure it out? Anyway, here are some tips that have been useful for me. (All examples come from the front page of A03, but the point is not to embarrass anyone. There is nothing seriously wrong with any of these.)
"I have work to do Leo. We need to find Mikey." Donnie responded, not looking over at Leo.
New writers love to put character names in dialog. And try it sometime, actually say the name of the person you're talking to as you're talking to them. It's very intense, often kind of aggressive ("Clean your room, Leo.") When it does happen, it's usually a way to underline what kind of relationship you have with the person you're talking to. ("I'm sorry, Master Splinter." = I respect you, and see you as an authority figure.") ("We're cool right, Red?" = I want you to know you're someone I feel emotionally close to.)
Regulus groaned. "This will be fun."
“Reggie! Truth or dare?” Lupin asked
“Dare, Rems,” Regulus replied. No one else called him Reggie.
The nicknames get across a lot more meaning/utility/character development than just straight-up names would, so points. But my thing is, don't torture yourself. Just use "said." It's fine. It's a super common invisible word. You can't overuse "said" the same way you can't overuse "that." It honestly takes you out of it more if characters spend a whole fic "responding" or "observing" or "answering."
"Harvey, I wasn't flirting, I was just socializing. You know how much I love meeting and talking to people, men or not. You are the only one I ever wanted and you know that."
This is an example of 'on-the-nose' dialog. Even though the character is in a kind of intense situation, they're laying out exactly what they want to say very clearly, something people are are generally pretty bad at.
You can pack a lot of character development into a moment like this. This person has just been accused of flirting when they weren't - so does that make them angry? defensive? confused? let down? apologetic? scared? playful?
Movie dialog can get away with being more on-the-nose, because a good actor can bring all those different kinds of subtext to the same line. Like this bit from Revenge of the Sith:
OBI-WAN: Anakin, Chancellor Palpatine is evil!
ANAKIN: From my point of view the Jedi are evil!
Not "What do you know?" or "The Jedi threatened him!" or "He's given me more than the you ever have!" Just a very straightforward 'Well, from Anakin's point of view the jedi are evil, so why doesn't he just say that.'
But Hayden Christensen is a good enough actor to sell the line- he takes the slightly formal phrase "From my point of view" and delivers it in a way that sounds automatic, like maybe this is something he's been taught to say. I could believe that "From my point of view" is a phrase Obi-Wan has given him to use in arguments, and he's bringing it out here because they still have a teacher/student dynamic, and he's desperately hoping that somehow Obi-Wan might still be willing to listen. Imagine if once or twice in the previous films we had an exchange like "Anakin! What were you doing with those chance cubes!" "From my point of view, I was making it easier for the other customers to come up and talk to me," and then got hit with that exchange in the final movie.
"Turning yourself in frankly diffused a very unstable situation, and saved both sides a lot of trouble and probably some lives, and well... I thought I owed you that much."
This is a good example of a speaking quirk (I'm going though a few characters, all from the same fic.) Notice the code-switching. The character starts off very professional before becoming casual - they say "a lot of trouble" when they could have said "significant expense and effort" - which would be more of a match to "diffused a very unstable situation." So either they're getting comfortable with the person they're talking to, trying to make that person feel more comfortable, or else their professional mask is slipping for some reason
"Are you trying to paint yourself an honest thief? Ha!"
That "Ha!" is so nice because it's like... a little lame? But I totally buy that no one is actually going to tell this character that, because he's powerful. Great for a slightly funny sub-villain.
"I gotta tell you about all the new jobs here! There's like, so many openings at the mines and in the factories!"
You don't even need to tell me this is a young character. That "like" does all the work for you.
"You want me to actively help you lot? Ha! What the fuck makes you think I'd ever do that?"
I like the combination of the precise and slightly technical "actively help" with the intense and in-your-face "fuck" and "you lot." There's a duality to this character. Like maybe they can code switch into 'expert' but choose not to. Intriguing.
Basically, you can have so much fun with a character swearing (or not), being formal (or not) using unusual words from their job or background, running scripts, talking too little, repeating themselves, having large or small vocabularies, phrasing everything as a question (or nothing as a question.) Gender, age, education level, location, background, profession, level of social prestige absolutely affect word choice and how characters talk... and if they're a robot, alien, angel, whatever - that's just an excuse to get even more stylized. (Heck, even over-using character names in dialog is a great speaking quirk for one specific character that you want to feel slightly intense/over-formal/other)

Okay, so NaNo is really hard. I thought, “sure, this will be a breeze. 1,667 words a day will be a breeze.” <- Idiot.
Aaaaanyway, I just wanted to give some motivation to my fellow writers out there. Here it is...*Drumroll*
You can do it! :> It might be cheesy, but just think of how rewarding it will be in a month! Do your best and it will be good enough!
I wish you the best of luck. <3

Current Work In Progress- Dieselpunk Space Opera
So, this is a project I started for NaNoWriMo a few years ago but didn’t get very far. It ended up stalling out at 12k words or so because I wasn’t sure what would happen. The novel, which I titled The Pilgrim’s War, will probably stick around for a while, although I’ve taken to calling the umbrella project Iron Horizons.
Essentially, it’s a space opera in the same sort of vein as Mass Effect or Foundation, but based on an alternate history that diverged around 1910ish- utilizing a continuation of 30s/40s aesthetics and alternate history. The Pilgrim’s War was set in the gear 2400ish, so approximately 450 years of alternate history to spread humanity into the neighboring sectors of the Milky Way. Hence- dieselpunk in aesthetic, technological base, and ideology (specifically: anti fascist, skeptical of technology, anti colonialist). But genre wise and scope, it’s space opera with centuries of alternate history, a galactic history currently developing in the aeons, and centuries more of future history.
A lot of these ideas were inspired by Tumblr- so it deals a lot with the posts about space mythology, star shanties, and the idea of humans as space orcs. I’ve always been a huge fan of maritime fiction books like Horatio Hornblower and the Aubrey/Maturin books, so I’ve based a lot of the spacefaring culture on continuing that sort of nautical tradition, but focusing more on the merchant spacers, privateers, and other civilians, especially space monks (inspired by the article on Tor).
So, like, the stories so far center mostly around a semi-retired privateer captain and a young monk on his initial pilgrimage before taking his final vows, but like, it's an entire alternate history based on the idea of pre-WW2 space flight and colonization. And in this case, it specifically means colonization in the European context since WW2 was sort of the start of the end of most of the European empires, if things had gone differently and there were empty moons and planetoids full of resources, would they have really abandoned colonialism? Personally, I suspect not.
A lot of this ended up being similar to, and retroactively inspired by, C.J. Cherryh's Alliance-Union series. It meshes well with the maritime influences- like why wouldn't the Earth governments outsource colonization to private organizations they can profit from, with little risk? I mean, look at the current space race- it's mostly billionaires already. I guess, in this case, it makes the old saying about how science-fiction is a futuristic story talking about the present very applicable.
I'll be honest- this is not a very optimistic setting, despite the wonders and beauty of space exploration. It's grim and hard and will eventually wipe itself out with an over-reliance on fossil fuels, but I guess that reflects the present. Add in the fact that space nazis are the main overarching villain for most of the alternate history, and it feels uncomfortably familiar. do i change that? keep it? I haven't decided quite yet, because it will mean this story is irreversibly tangled in modern-day politics.

Kimber's Novel Preparation To-Do List
As promised, here I'll share my personal Novel Preparation To-Do List.
First, I'll show the Novel Preparation To-Do List, and then I'll talk about each item to explain what they entail.
This list includes everything that I like to do before I start writing the first draft of a new novel. I also like to complete each of these tasks in the order seen below.
Novel Preparation To-Do List:
Initial Idea
Inspiration Boards
Outline Peoples and Cultures
Create a Map
Character Outlines
Interpersonal Relations Chart
Character Development Outline
Emotional Journey Line Graph
Theme Work (Make it Matter)
Story Outline
Chapter Story Outline
Initial Idea: You have an idea! Build that idea into an elevator pitch. Maybe you have an idea for a setting, or even a character or two.
Inspiration Boards: Gather inspiration and brainstorm lots of ideas by making Pinterest boards, Canva collages, mood playlists, and more.
Outline Peoples and Cultures: Outline the major groups of people and their cultures present in your story.
Create a Map: Take pen to paper or use a map generator to map out the world, the kingdoms, the towns, etc.
Character Outlines: Make a spreadsheet of all your characters and start outlining all your character details like physical features and personality types.
Interpersonal Relations Chart: Make a giant table to outline how all of your characters feel about each other and note relationships, family trees, etc.
Character Development Outline: Outline individual character arcs for your most important characters. How do they start? How do they change?
Emotional Journey Line Graph: Start outlining the plot by brainstorming your main plot points. What are the main things that happen? Keep your list small and make a line graph to show the rise and fall of the story with these main plot points.
Theme Work (Make it Matter): Make your story matter by taking time to think about themes, symbolism, motifs, beliefs, lessons, morals, change, etc. What is the story trying to say? What will readers come away thinking and feeling?
Story Outline: There are many story outline ideas out there. Personally, I like the 8-Point Arc. There is also the classic 3-Act Story Arc. Pick a story outlining method that resonates with you, and start filling out the spaces between your main plot points.
Chapter Story Outline: Once I have a general outline of the main events, I like to take things a step further by planning out every chapter.
What are you writing this November?
I'm working on the 3rd draft of a fantasy fiction novel I've been working on for a while now about dragons, witches, and wolves.
Follow me to stay updated on my writing progress and learn more about my process!

˗ˏˋ nanowrimo 2023 ´ˎ˗
hello!! last year I did updates on here how my journey through nanowrimo was going, and I am planning on doing them again!! but first I have an update first:
I am doing more than one project.
last year I got stock on the plot and I realized I needed to change the entire structure of the text for it to work. And I didn't want to work through that while maintaining the writing rhythm. So, I stopped all together. This year, I have many projects to work on, so if I get stock, I will move to the next one.
so, basically, the goal is to write 50,000 words between all of the projects by the end of the month.
the projects are (this is how I will be referring to them. those are no the title lol):
college au (same project as last year, 26.6k so far.).
fluff cc (canon compliant, 3+1 format, almost finished, 7.9k so far).
bad blood au (inspired by the Taylor Swift music video. I am still working on world building).
lost prince au (an event project. deadline until feb 2024. world building).
(all projects share the same pairing: han jisung and lee minho from stray kids♡).
if you want to check out the works that i finished between last nanowrimo and this one, here is my ao3 ♡.
see you on my first update of the season <3

Good luck, nano writers! Whether you hit your goal or not …
I hope you write things that amaze you when you go back to reread - I hope you learn things about worlds or characters that surprise you - I hope you find those moments of awe where things just click into place.
Also I would looove to talk about your stories if you get stuck!
I’m not joining this year (using November for revisions and rework of a first draft), so while others are also going 100mph, I’m here if you need a sounding board or wanna unravel knots etc.
Happy Day 1!!

Nanowrimo 2022
If I posted my Nanowrimo story, would anyone be interested in reading it?
It’s not really fanfiction or anything. It’s just a novelized version of my DND characters backstory. But I would love some feedback from anyone who has interest.

Idk about anyone else, but I absolutely cannot write in a linear fashion.
I have probably completed NaNoWriMo this year, but because I’ve been working on books 4, 5, and 7 while book 1 is still only 1 page long, I have nothing I can really show for it because it’ll s p o i l t h i n g s .
