I am out of town at Tinley Park. I made a custom Perentei monitor lizard plush for the auction for USARK. I got to meet some amazing reptile youtubers who i greatly respect ♡♡ back to plushing on Monday.
NARBC dallas is coming up! heres a tip for anyone looking to go, or anyone looking into getting into reptiles for the first time:
breeders are a GREAT resource for information, but remember that a lot of their advice is from "doing this for 30 years".
THIS IS A RED FLAG!
that doesnt mean that anyone who says this is a bad keeper by ANY means, but this phrase truly means nothing.
has that 30 years been spent keeping these animals in too tight enclosures? animals who dont thrive long term? animals who have bad health, but a keeper who isn't educated enough to realize? animals that have bad genes?
upfront, reputable, trustworthy animal keepers and breeders specifically will show you the conditions their animals are in. trustworthy animal keepers will backup their care standards with up to date research and scientific understanding of the animals they keep.
if they cannot keep up with current care standards and current biology, which is readily accessible via the internet these days from other trustworthy keepers with degrees and education who can talk the talk AND show off their healthy animals and always strive to improve their quality of life.
always ask questions, always do your research, and always be kind. do not buy animals from people who dont know what theyre doing, it gives them the means to continue doing it. as long as you buy from them, theyll continue to sell.
I’m not religious but I’m asking everyone to pray for me to whatever god will listen this weekend because, tragically, I’ll be in the state of Missouri
In the recent Snake Discovery video of them visiting the Tinley NARBC show, they introduce us to a breeder, JD Constriction, who specializes in axanthic ball pythons. In the video, he shows a recent new morph that he bred, an axanthic batman complex that he calls the Arkham Knight, and I looked up the morphs involved in the batman complex, which are clown, leopard and spotnose. I recalled you mentioning super spotnose as having a wobble similar to spiders, but are regular spotnoses okay if bred in this fashion?
Spotnose on its own does not have a wobble. All the morphs involved in batman morphs are ethical, and they're super rare still but there seem to be no issues with them! I always advise caution with these designer morphs, because there are a lot of breeders who will 100% prioritize profit and aesthetic over the snake's health, but I've seen no evidence that anything's wrong with batman morphs.
And batman morphs are just beautiful, too! I'm a sucker for practically every morph combination that has clown in it...
no offense to ball python Keepers, theyre wonderful snakes and i love them, fucking TIRED of all the breeders though. way too many people breeding them, the market is over-saturated and theres more people starting breeding projects when we absolutely do not need them, theres literally no point.
part of why i say this is because about Every vendor at an upcoming NARBC is a BP breeder. in comparison though, there are 152 vendors attending and 11 of them breed hognoses, about 7 if not less of them currently have hognoses available. only ONE of them is a hognose exclusive breeder.
