It’s G’kar!! G’kar is probably my favorite individual ambassador in Babylon 5 (as of Season 2 anyway!). His conflict, that feeling of helplessness... and his strength despite it all. I really love G’kar and he’s a sweet Narn, underneath all the anger.

Spirituality in Science Fiction and Fantasy
New post at "The Storytelling Blog" on spirituality in science fiction/fantasy. In which I discuss Babylon Five. #spirituality #worldbuilding #charactercreation
In July of this year (2023), I’ll be moderating a panel on Spirituality in Science Fiction/Fantasy at the Imaginarium Convention (Louisville, KY, USA). In preparation for that, I’ve pulled together a few thoughts and want to share them here. (Image by Speedy McVroom of Pixabay)
What is Spirituality?
I, like many people, thought I knew exactly what spirituality means until I tried write a…

S01E03: Born to the Purple
Ah, classic sci-fi half-naked waitresses and cut-out clothes on a pseudo-belly-dancer performed by white women. Of course this is the type of place Londo Mollari likes to hang out.
Nice, Londo. Feeeee-males. Very Quarkian.
Ko D’Ath, Spots’ new diplomatic attaché. I like her and her disgusted looks at the strip joint. And her flinging gross men! Yes please! I, too, would like to throw PUA asshats across the room with one arm.
*claps wildly* this is glorious 🤩
Look, Londo, if you get in bed with a random entertainer waiting for you in your quarters, you’re not responsible enough to be an ambassador. Londo. Ya dumb.
Wait, wait. Male Centauri have a mane of hair and female Centauri have a fuckin ponytail? A horsetail, if you will? I...I have no further commentary at this time.
Does anyone know this Centauri woman is a slave? Is slavery allowed in any of these four main societies or on Babylon 5? Someone please murder the hell out of this slaver.
“mind probe,” that’s a mascara stick, lmao.
I dunno if I can handle any more horse-related cultural/physiological Centauri facts. Her dress seriously looks like an equestrian outfit and I just cannot handle it!
Also cannot tell if Mollari knows that this nameless slave woman is a slave. Do Centauri have institutional slavery? There’s definitely some sort of bias against her that she’s worried about, but I can’t parse if slavery is legal here. (but of course the privileged, wealthy man is less concerned about breaking a societal taboo than the disenfranchised person)
No Talia, don’t date Sinclair. Date Susan.
Adira, finally a name for this woman. And if one single hair on her hair gets harmed, or she suffers a single consequence for being sex trafficked and enslaved I will be seriously displeased.
Lotta people capable of throwing other people with one hand in this episode.
HAH Trakis is going to try to team up with Londo against Adira? That’s definitely going to go well.
I’m glad Adira has someone helping her flee.
FUCK, slavery is legal under Centauri law. Alright Adira, burn down the republic, it’s too corrupt to exist.
Londo, you’d better be mad because slavery is evil and you’ve just realised that, not because Adira, who is enslaved, isn’t licking your boots.
Ko D’ath! Do give away the homeworld, but not to the Centauri. They’re slavers.
At least Londo cares if Adira is harmed. I gotta know what the deal is with slavery in this time. Do the other species know? Do the humans? Are they knowingly allying with and supporting slaving species?
I’m a sucker for a tragic backstory and am loving how much tragedy is in Susan Ivanova’s. I’ve got a feeling she’s going to disembowel Garibaldi for seeing her in a vulnerable moment. edit - wait, Susan was the one making the unauthorized gold call. I see now. Weird that she couldn’t just talk to her dad. Also, don’t date Garibaldi, Susan. Date Talia.
It’s interesting to me that Earth requires that all human telepaths be registered/imprisoned/drugged, but they also pay their fees. Is the psi corps some kind of private corporation? It’s starting to sound like a contracted business that has a total monopoly over human telepathy.
Londo, being less of a creep and more of a genuine person than I expected. And confirmation that slavery is well known in this universe. And apparently condoned on Babylon 5? Gross. Real gross.
K Londo, nice to give her fancy jewelry to sell to support herself in her new life as a free woman.
Still not over the fucking centaurs having fucking manes and tails. Can’t decide if it’s hilarious or not. Do they grow that way as a secondary sex characteristic, or do they intentionally groom (heh) themselves in adherence to a societal standard?
Next!
