Nassau County will ban transgender athletes from competing in women’s and girls sports at local facilities.
County Executive Bruce Blakeman announced the executive order, which will go into effect immediately, at a press conference on Thursday, Feb. 22.
The order applies only to female competitive sports, not co-ed or male sports. It will prevent transgender women from participating in women’s sports at all county-run facilities.
"This is not precluding anybody from participating in sports," said Blakeman. "What it is, it's identifying that there are women and girls who spend a tremendous amount of time and effort to excel and compete in their sports that are women's sports.”
Further calling the allowing of transgender women in women’s sports “bullying,” Blakeman said that “it’s a situation of fairness…it is an unfair advantage for someone who is a biological male to compete against a biological female."
He was joined by District 18 Legislator Samantha Goetz and Kim Russell, a former women's lacrosse coach at Ohio's Oberlin College who said she was terminated after speaking out against transgender athletes participating in women's sports.
New York LGBT Network President Dr. David Kilmnick condemned the move in a statement released shortly after the announcement.
“We are profoundly disappointed in Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman’s announcement of an executive order aimed at banning transgender athletes from participating in sports teams that align with their gender identity.”
Calling the order “deeply alarming,” Kilmnick said that it “not only undermines the principles of inclusivity and fairness but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes and exclusion.”
Blakeman said he did not know how many transgender athletes there are in Nassau County, but cited that between half a percent and one percent of all residents in the county identify as transgender.

A report finds that half of the 1,700 people on the Nassau County Police Department gang database have no criminal history, and nearly a quarter of the people were on the list "without a clear rationale".
A list of suspected gang members managed by the Nassau County Police Department includes people with little to no explanation or vague justifications, according to a report released Tuesday by a civil rights group.
The LatinoJustice report, which was shared with WSHU and Gothamist, finds that half of the 1,700 people on the gang database have no criminal history and nearly a quarter of the people were on the list without a clear rationale.
LatinoJustice obtained a redacted version of the list from the Freeport Police Department through a public records request.
Advocates warn that having your name on such a list could have a reverberating effect on the individuals, leading to deportation and less lenient sentences in the event of a future arrest.
“This is a practice of criminalizing Latinos and African Americans for their appearance, who they associate with, and where they live,” said Meena Roldán Oberdick, a lawyer at LatinoJustice, who authored the report. “There's no other way to describe this other than racial profiling.”
The Freeport gang database does not include any white supremacists groups and only three members of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang, according to the report.

Democrats pick up House seat in special election in NY-03!
I ❤️ NY-03!
Democrats have not won a major election in suburban Nassau County since Biden took the area in 2020. NY-03 is mostly in Nassau County and was famously won by Republican fabulist George Santos in 2022. It was Santos's ouster from the House which led to this special election.
So Democrat Tom Suozzi easily defeated his GOP opponent Mazi Pilip on Tuesday by a margin similar to Biden's win in 2020.
Tumblr media
Republicans sought to use immigration against Democrats in this election – and failed.
William Kristol and Andrew Egger observed at The Bulwark:
Republicans pummeled Suozzi on immigration with waves of hyperbolic border-invasion ads. But in his three terms in Congress Suozzi had been, for a Democrat, something of a border hawk. And he had plenty of money to portray himself as that. Indeed, he did so aggressively. When Republicans in Congress torpedoed the border bill, Suozzi attacked them for doing so and lamented that it would not now be able to expel “eighty percent” of asylum seekers and to stop migrants from flooding New York.
Yep, Republicans have been demanding border reform. When a viable bipartisan plan became a possibility in the US Senate, they shot it down on orders from adjudicated sex offender Donald Trump.
So now we have a Republican border crisis which Trump hopes will catapult his demented self back into the White House. But indications from NY-03 are that it probably won't work out for them.
Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut was one of the senators who worked on the Senate bipartisan immigration reform which Trump sabotaged. Murphy sees the MAGA GOP flip-flop on the border as something which can be used against Republicans nationally.
Sen. Chris Murphy urges Democrats to follow Tom Suozzi and go on the offensive on the border
“Suozzi messaged aggressively on the issue, running ads that highlighted his support for a secure border and legal pathways to citizenship,” Murphy wrote. “He flipped the script on his Republican opponent, successfully painting her as unserious about border security because of her opposition to the bipartisan border bill, and turned what could have been a devastating political liability into an advantage.” Murphy acknowledged his frustration that after months of negotiating the bipartisan border security bill, Republicans in the Senate ultimately knifed it in a matter of days. But he said the GOP’s rejection of the bill provides Democrats with a way to counter GOP talking points on the border.
Back in NY-03, some Republican apologists tried to blame the 7.8% defeat of their candidate on the weather. The official NWS weather station at La Guardia Airport in Queens, next to NY-03, reported a grand total of 3.3 inches [8.38 cm] of snow on Tuesday. And the snow was over by 3 PM. In New York, polls are open until 9 PM. There was plenty of time for Republicans to sweep away the minor amount of snow from their sidewalks and get to their polling places. Don't let the GOP give you a snow job about their loss of a swing district.
Anyway, with the victory of Tom Suozzi, Republicans are one step closer to losing their majority under Speaker "MAGA Mike" Johnson.

Angelo’s Pizza - A Decade Later
Tumblr media
Back in the late 00's/early 10's when I was on Long Island for college, I would go to Angelo's on a somewhat regular basis. Back then, they had what I would consider the best buffalo chicken pizza on Long Island. At this point, it's been a decade since I've had it and decided recently that my next trip to LI would include a stop for a buffalo chicken slice. I was meeting up with Matt so he came through too for his first visit to Angelo's. Unfortunately though, while everything looked pretty much the same, the pizza was not quite as good as I remembered.
Tumblr media
I got my classic combo of a grandma vodka (corner of course) and a buffalo chicken. Matt did the same but with a regular grandma. My vodka slice was honestly really good and has held up well from what I remember. Perfect amount of vodka sauce and just a little fluff to the crust. However, the buffalo was not up to snuff. I'm pretty sure it used to come standard with bleu cheese on top but no more. I still asked for a side of it though, because the chicken was just too much as is. The hot sauce made the breading all mushy and it was just too much hot flavor to really be able to enjoy. The crust was honestly perfect though, with again a nice bit of fluff but still a crispy bottom. I also took a bite of Matt's grandma and the sauce was very good and flavorful.
Tumblr media
I hate to say it, but I don't think I'll be making any more trips back to Angelo's. The buffalo is just not worth it anymore, especially considering each slice was $4. Had I just gotten the vodka grandma, I may have given this trip a 5, but the buffalo was so disappointing it dragged them down to a 4. C'est la vie.

Excerpt from Gangs With Greek Names by Steve Potter
I slouched across the room and flopped down into a blue beanbag chair. I gazed at the Farrah Fawcett poster on the wall above Greg's bed. I'd made the right choice during my questioning at Hell Night. If I had to pick only one of Charlie's Angels, yeah, she'd be the one. Beside her on the wall were posters featuring Barbie Benton, Brigitte Bardot, and that awesome one of Jacqueline Bisset from the movie The Deep. On the opposite wall, he'd taped a Sylvester Stallone poster from Rocky, and a Bruce Lee poster from Enter the Dragon, and a Tom Laughton poster from Billy Jack, and one of Charles Bronson from Death Wish. It interested me that Greg had arranged the female celebrities of sensual desire on one wall and the male celebrities of righteous anger on the other. All these idols gazed straight ahead out of their respective posters at the viewer. Because they were arranged across from one another, however, they appeared to be taking part in a big group staring contest, the muses of feminine beauty staring down the idols of masculine violence. Gangs With Greek Names, Steve Potter

Proud to Be a Highlander!
I’m privileged to live in one of the best public school districts, both in New York State and in the entire country.  In the 2021-22 state standardized testing, Herricks placed sixth in English Language Arts and seventh in Mathematics out of 686 districts for grades 3-8.  In grade 8 Math (Algebra) it ranked FIRST.  Way to go, Herricks!  I’m proud to say that I am a product of that school system. I graduated many years ago, it’s true, but the schools were excellent even then. Reading the recent newsletter, I believe the district has upped its game even more.
I can’t help but reflect on what has made Herricks Public Schools so good for so long.  It’s driven by many interdependent factors: motivated students, devoted faculty and administration, involved parents, great facilities and resources, and effective communication with and by all stakeholders.  Of course, none of this comes cheaply.  Our school tax levy is roughly twice what we pay for all other town and county services combined.  We pay the tax gladly, as our contribution to keeping this tradition of excellence going strong.  While funding alone cannot provide or ensure a top-notch education, a top-notch education cannot be provided without adequate funding.
One of my pet peeves is when I hear someone say, “I don’t have children in school, why should I have to pay?”  My former neighbor used to spew this nonsense regularly, and we got into several arguments over it.  Already, American education lags behind that of most of the developed world, with China and India catching up fast.  If the United States has any hope of remaining an economic superpower, then we need to leave these ignorant viewpoints behind and start moving toward a world-class educational system that is forward-looking, student-centric, and devoid of culture wars fought by the extremists on both sides.  These are abstractions, and often prove to be unconvincing debate points.
The best counterpoint to the “why should I pay” complaint is that good schools boost property values.  If you want your house to command a good price, then support your district.  I guarantee that if our schools here deteriorated, home prices would soon follow suit.  That can be seen in other parts of Nassau County.  Those complaining about the Herricks tax bill now would really have something to gripe about then.  Or how about when YOUR kids were in school, others supported them even though their children had already graduated, or perhaps they had had no children at all.  Pay it forward, bro!
It’s more than just dollars and cents, though.  We all benefit from living in an educated society.  Study after study has shown that a strong educational system can have societal benefits far beyond economics.  Reducing crime, equalizing opportunity, and promoting understanding across diverse social groups are a few that immediately come to mind.  Americans talk a good game when it comes to education; it’s time to put some substance behind it, like we do here at Herricks.

Are you a high school senior who will be 18 years old by 13 February 2024 and who lives in George Santos's old district (NY-03)? You can make a big difference in the first US House election of 2024.
While Republican Santos won in NY-03 in 2022, Joe Biden carried this area in 2020 by a comfortable margin. The February special election is rated as a TOSSUP by pundits across the political spectrum.
With the expulsion of Santos, there are now 221 Republicans, 213 Democrats, and 1 vacancy in the US House. With the impending resignation of Kevin McCarthy, the GOP total will drop to 220; it's uncertain when a special election would take place for McCarthy's seat. So a Democratic victory in NY-03 in February would narrow the margin to 220 Republicans, 214 Dems, and 1 vacancy. And a victory in February would also give an advantage to Democrats in that district in the November general election.
The February election in NY-03 is being looked upon as a national bellwether. A Republican defeat would not bode well for Trump and his plans to become a dictator.
9,000 18-year-olds have an opportunity to register and vote in the election to fill George Santos’s vacant seat.  Most 18-year-olds in the district are not yet registered to vote. The third Congressional District includes parts of Queens and Nassau County. In these counties, only 6.4% and 18.5% of 16- and 17-year-olds, respectively, were preregistered to vote as of February 2023. The registration rates for 18-year-olds today are unlikely to be dramatically higher than these preregistration rates.
You don't have to be 18 to register, but you must be 18 on or before Election Day to actually vote; that means February 13th for the NY-03 special election.
New York has relatively easy online voter registration, but you'll need a NY official ID to register.
Online Voter Registration | New York State Board of Elections
Personally, I think it's a good idea to register in person. The clerks can directly answer any questions you have without having to go through a complicated menu. Plus it feels like a rite of passage when you do it in person. You also have the advantage of getting some sort of hard copy receipt which can be useful if there's an electronic glitch.
For a map to find the cities and town in the district, click here. Then ask everyone you know in the district to make sure they are registered to vote and that everyone in their family has registered, as well.
This is a general map. NY-03 covers parts of Queens and Nassau County – but not all of Queens and Nassau County.
Tumblr media
This site is best known for letting people know who their state legislators are. But if you scroll down a bit on the left to Federal it will tell you which congressional district you're in.
Tumblr media
^^^ So they haven't removed Santos from the search results. But the important thing is that it shows you're in the 3rd US House district in New York.
Of course any US citizen over 18 in NY-03 can vote in the February election. So share this information with anybody who you think isn't registered or has moved since the last election.
If you've moved since the last election, even if just across the street, you need to register at your new address. Voter registration is based specifically on geography.

Saverio's Authentic Pizza Napoletana - N Broadway in North Massapequa, NY
Tumblr media
After hitting Angelo's last time I was on LI, I was still hungry before Matt and I headed out to the concert we were going to that night. He wasn't hungry, so I decided to just grab a quick slice so I could bring all of you a brand new Long Island pizza review. Andrew Burke also accompanied us and gave me the bad news that Saverio's, a highly recommended local spot I had yet to try, was pie only.......but we hesitantly soldiered on anyway.
Tumblr media
Andrew and I decided to split a pie and settled on the Alla Vodka (yup, vodka sauce twice in a day!). Luckily, even though it was a pie, our wait time was very short (less than 10 mins). Overall, it was a great tasting pie. Delicious vodka sauce and excellent, fluffy crust. However, I still had a few gripes. First was obviously the fact Saverio's is pie only, and for the size (and price), it's just too much for one person to eat on a normal day. It's a good size for two people though as I was decently full after half a pie. The pie was cut into 6 pieces and I probably would have preferred 4 slices, but 3 was still pretty filling. Anyway, the second (and probably biggest) issue was the price. A vodka pie costs $16.29, which would be fine if it was a full size pie, but considering it's only enough for 2 people...yeah it's a little expensive. Definitely not worth it if you're trying to get takeout for the whole family. And $16 on your own for something you probably won't finish? Count me out. My third and final issue was that when the pie came out it was so hot that the sauce and cheese were just sliding off the crust making it very difficult to enjoy. It was fine after like five minutes but damn I'm not trying to wait that long to eat my za!
Tumblr media
Overall, I would give Saverio's a selective recommendation. It would be great for a date night or if you're hanging out with a single friend, but by yourself or with a large group it's just too expensive for what you're getting. Though it was good, I don't see myself heading back anytime soon.
