Notes: the audio isn't the greatest especially during the applause and part of go go go Joseph. Also this was my first time taking a full audio of a show (I tried on my trip to Joseph the week before and I did fix some things that were wrong with the audio). My phone also is kind of old so the microphone isn't the greatest for picking up audio.
I also didn't take audio of the megamix or closing speech but I will be uploading the video of it soon.
@alonz-ho You will be glad to know that the editors of 'The Show Must Go On' documentary included this little moment in a montage set to part of 'Jellicle songs', and that it's set to the line 'romantical cats'.
(She isn't snarling at him: this is during Grizabella's first appearance.)
(Fletcher Dobinson and Natalie Bennyworth as Alonzo and Cassandra, 2020 Asia tour.)
Pop, Six, Squish - Chicago at the Phoenix Theatre 22/06/18
Chicago for the third time!
Chicago was my first West End musical, talk about kicking it off with a POP. My uncle Kon took me for my 10th birthday, looking back…this may have been more appropriate for a SIXeenth birthday, but I am so glad he took me! I remember sitting hunched over, SQUISHed in my seat to get the best view. This was back in 2007 when the show was still in the Cambridge Theatre, if you have been to this blog…
So, last night - 16 May 2021 - was meant to be the closing night of the Asia tour in Korea, before moving on to Taiwan (and bringing in a few new cast members to replace those who had chosen not to renew their contracts for Taiwain).
Instead, with about 24 hours' notice, it became a closing night for good.
Due, presumably, to the current COVID situation in Taiwan and its consequent border closures, the Taiwan leg has been cancelled: the 2020 Asia tour is now at an end.
Melodramatical moments like the Macavity reveal should look a bit silly when everyone's just in rehearsal gear, but... not if everyone commits like this.
Thomas Inge as Macavity is just living his best life (and somehow looking even more indecent in that loose top than in all the many shirtless thirst traps he posts on insta, but I digress).
Demeter (Ella Nonini) rushes past carrying the Deuteronomy coat, followed by Cassandra (Natalie Bennyworth, white top), and possibly Bombalurina (Suzie Melloy, black top, far left in the first few frames) who is backing away in horror as she realises.
On the far right we see Skimbleshanks (Hayden Baum, black top and green headband) shifting from 'concerned reach??' to 'PROTECTOR STANCE AND SNARL'—and what prompts that change? It's Macavity lashing out at Mungojerrie (George Hankers, green shirt with his back to us). Jerrie feels the blow (physical or magical) and flinches away, half trying to cover his eyes and half turning toward Rumpelteazer (Dominique Hamilton, pink singlet and red ponytail, bottom left corner).
The black shirt and back of a red curly head in the first few frames are Munkustrap (Rafe Watts), who reacts before Macavity lashes out at Mungojerrie: he was tense already, and it's the sight of Macavity's face that he reacts to. He's already realising things have gone very wrong...
... and so is the other Munkustrap (Benjamin Colley, swing and first cover Tugger/Munk), sitting down at the edge of the stage. Ben's focus is locked on Rafe—and he even half snarls along with him!
(Thalia Burt, on the other hand, is busy being resident director, not actor.)
(The three other booth swings are at the table behind her: left to right, Andrew Dunne, Holly Willock, Caitlin New.)
... he beams and pulls a silly face! Poor jumpy baby wasn't sure he'd manage to stop the train but HE DID IT, he's doing so well as an apprentice train cat.
Hayden Baum as Skimbleshanks and Kade Hughes('s back) as Bill Bailey, 2020 Asia tour rehearsals.
The line behind him is: Jemima out in front (pale pink shirt), then Electra-or-Victoria (black shirt) and Rumpelteazer (red singlet), then Tantomile (grey crop top and head band and making a beautifully silly face) and Carbuckety (black tee and amazing hair), then Coricopat (red headband) and Cassandra (grey shirt and bun).
(I say Electra-or-Victoria because Tyler Lotzof is missing, so Anina might be doing her own track or covering for Victoria. Mungojerrie is out of shot, probably standing with Bill Bailey.)
In order, that is: Holly Willock, Anina Pletscher, Dominique Hamilton, Emily Casey, Jal Joshua, Aaron Lynch, Natalie Bennyworth.
