In early February 2024, the Russian authorities sent the country’s music producers and promoters an updated list of artists who are “banned from concert activity” in Russia. Meduza has obtained a copy of the document from two sources in the music industry.

The blacklist contains attendees of the “almost naked” party that drew sharp backlash from conservative activists and the Russian authorities in December, including singers Philipp Kirkorov, Lolita Milyavskaya, Natalya Ionova (better known as Glukoza), Dima Bilan, and Anna Asti. It also includes artists who have spoken out against the war in Ukraine, such as rapper Loqiemean and the band Neschastny Sluchai (“Accident” or “Unfortunate Event”), as well as others who have been more cautious in their statements about the war, like the bands Komsomolsk and Shortparis.

Even some artists who recently took part in “patriotic” events landed on the list. The bands Mongol Shuudan, Yorsh, and Plan Lomonosov, for example, performed at KinchevFest, a musical festival organized by Alisa band leader Konstantin Kinchev, who has spoken out in support of the Russian army.

One of the artists on the list told Meduza that the new version of the list is its “third iteration.” Shortly before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he said, people with links to the Putin administration warned him that there would be lists like this and that he would land on it if he didn’t “change [his] position.” Another source in the music industry also said the list came straight from the Kremlin.

A Russian music promoter told Meduza that he has seen evidence of the ban being implemented against at least two of the artists on the list. “Promoters are getting calls and being told that we can’t include these artists at events that use state money or hang outdoor ads [for them],” he explained.

The Russian media has reported on the existence of unpublicized music industry blacklists in the past, though the Russian authorities have denied that such lists exist. According to one banned artist who spoke to Meduza, the lists are compiled by the Presidential Directorate for Social Projects, which is led by Sergey Novikov. Meduza’s sources have characterized Novikov as the top figure behind the Russian authorities’ censorship of film, theater, and music. Novikov did not respond to Meduza’s request for comment.

Soldier. Getting drafted into the First Army was a death sentence, Natalya Novikov knew that. Most would argue that being put into a unit of trackers was better than being an outright soldier, but the military issue weapon she’d been given on her first day said otherwise. Regardless of her position, she was still property of the Ravkan monarchy, property of an army that had to drag her in. The First Army was Ravka’s first line of defense against threats to their sovereignty and if the situation arose, Natalya knew she’d be expected to be a god little soldier and die for a country that cared all too little.

Shreya Batra. Natalya Novikov. Two girls who, despite all differences, had led lives that would presumably finish with the same ending: dying for their country.  Ravka was war-torn, weakened, filled with destruction. A stage set for a finale that should have been nothing but bloodshed. Two girls, both underestimated. Both raised like lambs for slaughter, trained to be the perfect soldiers for Ravka’s two armies, for a war that was never meant to be their burden to bear. But the thing about stories is that they always have the power to change and this one changed with the discovery of the Sun Summoner. It was that burst of light in the Shadow Fold that set a new path into motion, one that could have the potential to destroy Ravka more than ever before but one that also offered a semblance of hope.

Summoner. Soldier. Survivors.

They would not allow themselves to become casualties of this war.

ooo okay nat my lil bb (i think that's what you meant anyways haha)

so i think the draft is a mandatory thing in the sab world in ravka but i could totally see natalya "i hate the first army" novikov evading the draft and going off to help her country in other ways. could possibly see her running into sturmhond and the twins at some point and maybe coming into the thick of things that way.

and if she was drafted but put into a different unit, i could see her be putting into the cartographer unit with alina and forming a sort of friendship with her which leads to her working with mal on finding a way to get alina back and then subsequently helping alina escape the darkling and destroy the fold!

so shreya helped alina flee the little palace but when alina got sighted, shreya basically bought alina more time to get away, but it led to her getting caught

she's brought back to the darkling and he is pissed

she was one of his, like, star pupils so he's thrown for a loop that she would betray him

but the rose colored glasses are officially off and she no longer has any illusions about the type of person he is

there's just like a really intense discussion between them where her life basically gets threatened and he's like i'm so disappointed in you, you were going to help change the world and she is just DONE

like she's so sick of him spouting that line and she ends up pretty much telling him that alina is a lot smarter and stronger than he thinks and shreya vows to help her burn his kingdom to the ground

the fjerdan attack on the tracking camp

she's dead asleep when it happens, most of the others are outside getting ambushed

one of the fjerdans ends up dragging her out of her tent and she's kicking and screaming and is absolutely terrified

like this is not what she signed up for at ALL

like she's pretty much waiting for the end

the others get the drop on the person attacking her and help her up but she's fucking TERRFIED

so cue the even more intense attack, mal's down, the rest of the team is getting killed and she's like struggling once again

she ends up making the last killing shot on one of the fjerdans and it rocks her to her core because she's never had to shoot someone before

like if mal wasn't on the verge of fucking croaking right then and there, she might have just curled up into a ball right there

(we know v little about tidemakers so i'm just gonna create my own canon here but also the darkling's short story showed a tidemaker doing things with ice so this is valid idc)

Hc to know better: natalya

i've mentioned before that her older brother was grisha, but she doesn't really remember him that well because once he had his examination, he was pretty much carted away from his family to the little palace and he was a good deal older than her so her memories are like nonexistent. but natalya spent a few years praying that she'd be grisha when she got tested so she'd finally get to really meet her older brother.

yes you can!

i’ve mentioned her older brother being a grisha squaller who was killed in the fold before, but the sad thing is natalya has pretty much no memory of him because he was a bit older and by the time his grisha test came around, she was too young to remember him

her family prays to/honors sankta marya of the rock, who’s a canon saint in the series who’s meant to be the saint of people far from home

she grew up near a woodsy area and spent most of her childhood hunting with her father (hence why she’s placed in a tracker unit)

is capable in a fight but not super skilled so later in the fic, she goes to tamar for help training (really hoping tamar is brought in for season 2 bc she’s badass and this friendship is everything tbfh)

has really bad nightmares after the fjerdan attack when she’s helping hunt for the stag

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR GRISHAVERSE OCS BABE

i’ve been waiting for this one, tURN IT UP. so right now i have two (technically three, but my third baby doesn’t really have too much going for her rn). as of rn i’m basing the plots mostly on the books because idk what the show is cutting/changing and if i want to follow that and i came up with these two while reading so ... all i have rn is that content whoops. they’re also going to be featured in the same fic which will have alternating pov chapters depending on what’s happening!

my first oc is shreya batra (fc: anya chalotra). she’s grisha, specifically an inferni. she’s pretty much a very skilled grisha, like somewhat of a prodigy, very keen on being the absolute best, pushing herself to be better than everyone around her and she definitely has like this desire to be seen as useful and a necessary part of whatever she’s involved in. the darkling definitely takes notice of that and sort of uses it to his advantage, praising her and really making her feel important which in his mind equals being able to have her at his disposal if need be without question. she really looks up to the darkling a lot and tries her best to like make him proud, make up for the lack of attention she got as a kid but things take a very large turn when alina is discovered to be the sun summoner. like genya, the darkling pushes shreya to befriend alina and get to know her and sort of manipulate her but shreya doesn’t really notice that at first. but shreya ends up falling for alina, which makes things very complicated, especially when she begins to have a lot of doubts about the darklings true purpose as more things become uncovered and it really turns into a battle between choosing a girl she barely knows and the place she thought she belonged.

my other oc is natalya novikov (fc: danielle rose russell). natalya is not grisha, but she is part of the first army! so her older brother was actually grisha (a squaller) but he ended up dying on a journey across the fold when she was little so she sorta holds a bit of resentment towards the second army (not grisha specifically like she thinks the whole powers thing is cool she just hates the the second army made her lose her brother). she’s also fairly against the first army but she gets drafted anyways because ravka said fuck what you want. she grew up hunting with her father in the woods near their house so eventually when she ends up joining the army, she’s gets put in the tracking unit and is in the same group as mal! she ends up becoming fairly close with him during their time working together, but at first it’s pretty much purely platonic. she joins the team with mal to hunt morozova’s stag and spends a good amount of time being there for mal when he thinks alina has left him behind. her plot during the later books will involve more of a slowburn with mal and i’m adoring plotting their relationship!

(also shreya and mal are going to have such a funny friendship because they’re constantly bitching at each other and then five seconds saving each other’s lives and it makes me laugh.)
