War Girls has such a cool premise, but it all annoyed me. The goodreads/storygraph review i did said "Three different times I thought to myself, wow the book could've just ended here. Then I get near the end and think "ok I'm invested in the actual ending" Then I get to the end and....I'm upset."
At 1st I thought it was written the way it was because they didn't give an extended book deal so the author had to write 3 stories unto 1 and rush the book because he didn't have enough pages similar to Deathless Divide by Justina Ireland but no there's a sequel. Its gonna be a series.

Drawing of Simidele from “Skin of the Sea” by Natasha Bowen! I bought it at my school’s scholastic book fair last semester and absolutely fell in love with it 😍 it’s all about west African folklore, Yoruba orisas, and follows Simidele, a mami wata.

Who knew mermaids could be Black?
New blog post 🚨🚨 Who knew mermaids could be Black? From Ariel to Mami Wata and back to Arieln via Ulysees 31 (and yes that's why sirens are called sirens)
I’m really looking forward to seeing the Disney live action of The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey, this May. As someone who is sometimes voiceless I have always felt an affinity with Ariel, however, unlike her I didn’t become mute because I traded in my voice for the love of a Prince (or if you look at the original Hans Christian Andersen version no one cut my tongue off). Anyway, I…

I think I said this last year, but it bears repeating: this trainwreck of an African mermaid book would make an excellent movie.
A huge part of the problem is with the weird phrasing, forcing unnecessary description where you need none, overcomplicated prose... All of that would be gone in the adaptation
A good screenwriter could streamline the plot and write better dialogues
Joruba folklore representation on the screen
But also, one issue with the book that it just throws out terms associated with the folklore, like names of different hair braiding styles and names of foods, without stopping to explain with they are, and a visual adaptation would help with that
Honestly, it could be a visual feast
