Flightless Bird | eighteen | Bradley Rooster Bradshaw

Synopsis: Josephine Wilson Miller is alone for the first time in her life. She got married after her first year of college and became a housewife, but that life is gone now. So she runs to San Diego, to her childhood best friend Jake, where she meets the man who could very well be her salvation.

series warnings: unplanned pregnancy, just pregnancy in general, talks of infertility. past mental and emotional abuse. anxiety. talks of women's reproductive systems (idk)

“Mommy! Hurry up!” Wren said, dragging Jose behind her, “Auntie Nat twell her!”

Natasha only laughed and walked next to Jose. They were on their way from the parking lot to the tarmac for the airshow. Jake was set to be flying and Wren was begging to go see it. Although, Jose tried to normally stay away from Airshows in general just in case someone certain was there.

“So, I have some news,” Nat whispered to Jose.

“Oh?”

Natasha just smiled and twisted her wedding ring, something Jose noticed the female pilot did when she was a little anxious. Her and Jake got married two years prior in a small ceremony on the beach. Not to big and fussy, as both of them wanted simple friends and family. A certain Blue Angels pilot was not able to attend, so Coyote was Jake’s best man while Jose was the maid of honor, with little baby Wren as a little flower girl. It was beautiful and simple and perfect.

“You can’t tell anyone yet,” Phoenix stated, “But I’m pregnant.”

Jose stopped in her tracks, much to Wren’s dismay who let out a little wail and tried with all of her might to pull her mom forward.

“Oh my god, Nat!”

“Are you mad? I know you-”

“Mad? Oh my god no, I’m so happy for you!” Jose exclaimed, hugging the other woman, “Does Jake know yet?”

Natasha shook her head, “No I haven’t found the time to tell him yet.”

“How far along?”

“Six weeks? I think? I have a doctors appointment next week to confirm,” She explained, “But I’m so scared to tell Jake. We’ve talked about kids, but not yet.”

“Well, I’m assuming you weren’t using anything?” Jose asked carefully.

“We weren’t trying,” Nat swore, “But we weren’t not trying.”

Jose couldn’t help but laugh. That sounded like the most Jake and Natasha thing.

“I want Gampa Mav and Nenny,” Wren whined, snapping the two women out of their hug.

“Okay, let’s go munchkin.”

Wren was dressed in little combat boots, one of the flight jackets that Jose bought for her before she was born, and a pink tutu. She looked like a little combat princess as she strutted in front of Jose and Nat.

For a nearly four year old, she had a lot of personality. Maybe too much for her own good. But Jose loved her daughter with all of her heart. There wasn’t a thing in this world that she wouldn’t do for her.

“Thank you for coming today,” Nat nudged Jose with her shoulder, “I know it means a lot to Jake to have you guys here for this.”

Jake was set to be a part of a super important Legacy flight, one of the only f-18 pilots chosen. He couldn’t stop talking about it for weeks prior. Jose wasn’t sure if she’d ever seen him so excited for something related to work before.

“We couldn’t miss it,” Jose shrugged, “Wren wouldn’t let me.”

“Mama we see Unca Yake?” Wren asked.

Jose couldn’t help but smile at the way that Wren said Uncle Jake. They were still working on her speech, but the little munchkin was getting better and better every day.

“Yeah sweetheart, we’ll see him soon, I promise,” Jose replied, “But let’s find Gampa Mav and Nenny first, okay?”

She nodded enthusiastically and wiggled a little in Jose’s arms. Little Florence loved Maverick and Penny, now lovingly known and Gampa Mav and Nenny. They stepped right into the role of grandparents to Wren without a second thought. They were there to support Wren and Jose with no questions asked, even after Jose forced Braldey to leave.

They never once asked what happened between the two of them. Instead they just loved Jose and her little daughter with all of their hearts.

“Gampa Mav!” Wren wiggled out of Jose’s arms and took off running towards the older pilot, “Nenny! Auntie ‘Melia!”

“Shit,” Jose cursed, chasing after her little girl.

Wren jumped into Mav’s arms, hugging the older man as tightly as she could. Mav laughed and hugged her back, not seeming to notice the fact that the little girl ran off without her mother. Penny was a little more attentive and scowled at the little girl as best as she could.

“Wren, what have I told you?” Jose was out of breath as soon as she reached them, “You need to stay with me!”

“But I saw Gampa Mav and Nenny.” The little girl blinked up at her mother, not seeming to understand.

“You can’t run off-”

“Mav! There you are!”

Jose froze. She didn’t dare turn to look at the source of the voice. A noise escaped her, sounding like a small wounded animal. She didn’t even check to see if they were going to be here today. Normally she checked every air show, but Jake was so excited that she was going to come and bring Wren.

“Bradley,” Mav said, handing Wren over to Phoenix who finally caught up, “Didn’t expect to see you until later.”

“I had a second and saw you guys over here.”

Wren looked at Bradley with wide eyes. He was in his blue and gold flight suit, looking like a hero in his own way. Wren was mesmerized by any pilots. She loved planes, and the people that flew them.

“You fwy pwanes?”

Bradley was stunned for a second. He finally realized who was standing next to Mav and Penny. She looked so different, and yet exactly the same. Her hair was longer, and she was thinner than he’d ever seen her. So much so it made him wonder if she was eating enough. But he didn’t have the right to worry about Josephine Wilson anymore, not when she kicked him out of her life.

“I uh-” He cleared his throat and directed his attention to the little girl in Phoenix’s arms.

Somehow it hadn’t occurred to him that this was the little baby he once loved with all of his heart. She was so much bigger, with wide eyes that mirrored her mother’s. She looked just like Jose. There’s no way that wasn’t her daughter. It made him want to cry. He loved her like a daughter and he missed out on so much of her life.

“Yeah, I do,” Bradley smiled at the little girl, forcing down the emotions. He leaned down so he was eye level with her, “See that blue and yellow plane over there?” he pointed down the way a little to where all of the Blue Angels were lined up, “That one is mine.”

“Woah,” She replied, “Auntie Nat can we go see?”

Nat carefully looked over at Jose, who still hadn’t allowed herself to look over at Bradley. Jose nodded quickly, watching as Nat along with Mav, Penny, and Amelia made their way towards the row of planes.

Jose swallowed the thick lump in her throat. She felt like she could cry. She always did her best to avoid Bradley at any event that the Blue Angels could be at. Jake always understood. He hated it, but he understood. She wanted to be mad at him for not warning her that he would be here today. She felt tricked and like her heart was going to explode.

“Jose.”

She closed her eyes and licked her dry lips before opening her eyes and turning to face him, “Hi Bradley.”

“It’s good to see you,” He said slowly, carefully even.

“Yeah, um, you too,” She replied, “You look good.”

“I am. Pensacola has been good for me,” He replied, voice sounding like gravel.

She nodded. She wasn’t sure what she expected him to say. What do you even say in a situation like this? How is she supposed to do this? How was she supposed to face Bradley, when all she wanted to do was be held by him again? She wanted to feel his lips on hers again. She wanted him more than she could dare to put into words.

“You look…nice,” Bradley had to force the words out. He wanted nothing more than to hold her.

“Try keeping up with a three year old, see how you look,” She responded quickly.

“No, I didn’t mean it like that. I genuinely meant you look nice.”

She looked down at her little sundress and sighed. She hated this feeling between them. This rift, the distance…whatever it was. She wanted to feel close to him again. But she didn’t know how she could ever feel close like she used to.

“She’s gotten so big,” Bradley was looking over his shoulder now, looking towards Wren, “She was so tiny when I left.”

“Bradley about what I-”

“Bradshaw! Time to get ready.”

His eyes closed as he took a deep breath. His shoulders squared before his eyes opened again and he was back to being Rooster. He forced a smile and held out his hand for Jose to shake. How do you even shake hands with the man you’re still madly in love with?

“Nice to see you again, Josephine. Look for me in the skies.”

She wanted to say more. Wanted to beg for his forgiveness. Wanted to beg for him…just for him to give her a second chance. But he was gone before she had the chance. He disappeared into the crowd of people like a leaf disappears in the wind.

Jose was still holding her breath when Natasha came back to stand next to her, “Mav has Wren. Are you okay?”

Jose’s eyes started to water, “I didn’t realize how much I missed him. And then he’s right here and I can’t say any of the things that I want.”

“You’ll get your chance,” Natasha assured her, “Now c’mon, Jake is up next. Don’t want to miss him.”

Later that night, Jose was sitting in her bed alone. Wren was staying with Jake and Natasha tonight, so the house was silent. Jose didn’t quite know what to do with herself. So she poured a big glass of wine and settled in. What she didn’t expect was her phone pinging at eleven, with a text from a number she never expected to see again.

She found herself scurrying out of the bed and fumbling her way to the front door. Her breath was ragged as she threw the door open to reveal Bradley standing there. He looked too good to be true.

“Hey,” She said stupidly.

Bradley was on her in an instant, hands cradling her face, “Tell me you don’t want this.”

“I-” She took a second, “I want you. I always have.”

Then he was kissing her like she was the only thing that mattered in the whole world.

Hurry, She Needs You - part 5

Summary: Natasha becomes ill from what they think is food poisoning. Tony and Bruce try to care for her until Clint arrives home from a deep cover mission. Part 5 of 6

Whumptober Day 5: (ALT) Shaking | Panic

Joyce and Marcus returned for Natasha’s second round of the antidote. Clint sat her up, but she remained huddled against him.

“I’m going to swab your arm, Agent Romanov.” Joyce made sure Natasha could see her.

"No, you." Natasha begged Clint.

Nurse Griffin handed him the syringe and a swab. Both he and Nurse Miller stepped aside knowing how often Barton had to play doctor in the field.

“Eyes on me.” Clint instructed as he cleaned the inside of her forearm with alcohol.

Natasha listened, wincing as he inserted the needle.

“Doin good.” Clint soothed when Natasha began to tremble.

“It burns.”

“I know, I’m sorry. Few more seconds.”

Tears began to fall but she kept still.

“All done.” He handed off the syringe and quickly engulfed her tiny body against his. “One more to go.”

“Hawk.” She moaned.

He kissed her temple, rubbing circles on her back.

Natasha doubled over, but it seemed the muscle cramping wasn’t as severe as the last time. Unfortunately, it still made her sick.

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s nothing, hon.”

Nat had thrown up what little fluids she drank. Hawkeye didn’t flinch. Bruce grabbed some towels from a drawer.

Clint leaned Nat against his knees, stripped off his shirt, and removed her gown. Nurse Miller cleaned up Natasha and helped Barton put a fresh cover on her. She found Clint a clean SHIELD t-shirt.

“Go get some sleep.” Tony told Bruce.

He started to argue, Clint interjected.

“You both need it. You’ve done enough, go.”

Tony made Bruce leave first. He sat back down.

Clint gave him a wary look.

"The two of you have stuck by my side too many times. I’ll leave when she can leave.”

Barton could no longer hide his weariness.

“Thank you.”

“Don’t get sentimental.”

The corner of Clint’s mouth turned up. He leaned his head against Natasha's and was out within seconds.

Tony kept watch while the two assassin’s slept in each other’s arms. Whenever Nat made a small noise, Clint would unconsciously comfort her, making her aware of his presence. And when he moved, she made sure to have a tight grip on him.

Clint jerked awake the next time she called his name.

“Nat.” He gently shook her.

Her whimpering increased.

“Nat, wake up.” He tried again when she started crying.

“No!” Natasha bolted upright, pulling at Hawkeye’s shirt.

“Widow, I’m fine.” He remained still.

“I have to stop the bleeding.” Tony watched her frantically search for an injury that wasn’t there. “There’s so much blood.”

“Natasha!” Clint finally lost his patient tone.

She stopped, breathing in big gulps of air, shaking from head to toe.

“There is no blood.”

Looking down, she ran a trembling hand over his ribs.

“You’re not there. We’re safe.”

She collapsed against him, continuing to touch a faint scar below his heart until she fell back asleep.

Clint motioned for Tony.

I’m going to hit the head. He mouthed.

Barton rolled Natasha onto her side, stood and stretched his six foot three, ‘I’m not a superhuman - but I’m built like one’ physique.

“Don’t leave.” Natasha pleaded, awake and looking at Clint with big, green eyes.

“Nature calls.” He bent, running his fingers through her hair.

She made a small noise, moving towards him.

Clint crouched beside the bed.

“Stark, would you toss me that jug please?”

Tony handed him a container with a wide mouth, normally used for incapacitated men.

“Give me a minute?”

Tony closed the curtain and stepped outside, pretending not to hear Barton relieving himself.

Clint washed his hands in the nearby sink and dragged a chair across the floor. He groaned as he sat down. Natasha called for him.

“I’m here, мой паук.”

“I can’t feel you.” The beeping of the heart monitor increased.

Clint didn’t say anything. Tony knew by the rustling of sheets Hawkeye crawled back in bed with Natasha.

"Sir, Sgt. Barnes and Lieutenant Wilson are here." Jarvis informed him.

"Send them up." Tony had the entire building on high alert since Natasha was brought in.

"What'd you find?" He asked when they rounded the hallway.

"He got the jump on us, but Sam used Red Wing to put a tracker on his car."

"He's moving north and fast, Tony." Sam leand in. "Want me to contact Torres? He and the boys will create a road block."

"Call Rhodey first, then do it."

"She okay?" Bucky nodded towards the room.

"She's out of the water. Come see."

They entered, Bucky and Sam heading to each side of the bed. Clint and Bucky clasped hands. Clint pulled him in close, careful not to disturb a sleeping Natasha.

"She wouldn't have..."

"Don't." Bucky stopped him. "I owe her and you too much."

"Here." Sam held out a plain black ring. "I know you guys don't need this kind of stuff but Dr. Banner said it might help."

"You're a good friend, Sam." Clint slipped it on the fourth finger of his right hand.

"You need anything?"

"Only what you're doing for us right now, thank you."

"We got it covered, brother. You get her better and we'll fill you in."

"So how long have you been in love with her?"

Bucky's POV

"Psh in-in love? With Olivia? That's crazy. Wh-why would you think I love her o-or something?" The words finally stumbling their way out of my mouth after an embarrassing amount of time just staring at Valkyrie.

Valkyrie's smirk only seemed to grow as I barely managed to form a complete sentence and she started here response. "Oh maybe just the way you haven't been able to stop staring at her all night? The way your face gets all nice and pink whenever she talks to you. How about the way you seemed to choke on air when she flirted with me? Oh! Or what about when.."

"Okay I get it you've got examples but you're looking at it completely wrong. Why would I be interested in Olivia Miller when she's clearly interested in you?" I interrupted and returned my attention to my drink.

"So you wouldn't mind if I took her back to where I'm staying then? There wouldn't be any animosity towards me or Olivia if we made a mutual, consensual, decision to take this party back to my place?" Valkyrie asked, smirk ever present on her lips.

"Nope. Not at all. Have fun. She's a loud one. Try not to get a noise complaint," I tipped my glass to Valkyrie, pushing my chair back and making my way to the bar. Jack said nothing as he passed me a double of whiskey and I downed it in one go, requesting another, this time taking it back to the table with my friends. Olivia and Valkyrie had made their way to a small table with Liv practically sitting in Valkyrie's lap, Valkyrie running her fingers through Olivia's hair. Liv never lets anyone touch her hair, she claims it takes too long to do so why should someone get to play with it. I wonder if Liv is in her right mind at all, flirting with this Valkyrie person. What the hell kind of name is Valkyrie anyways...

"Hey mate, what were you and Val talking about? It seemed pretty serious," Thor interrupted my thoughts with a clap on my back, ultimately grabbing the attention of our entire table.

"I heard that they were talking about how in love he is with Olivia," Loki said wiggling his brows teasingly.

"Oh well it doesn't take a genius to figure that out, and I am a genius. He's been hooked since day one. Why he hasn't made a move yet is beyond me," Tony said matter-of-factly with a smirk on his lips and a sip of his drink, causing the rest of our friends to chuckle as if what he said was law. Their reactions doing nothing to quell the tightness I felt in my stomach regarding the conversation.

"Oh man, you guys should have heard the things he said after he met her at Tony's party that first night. He would not shut up about her and demanded to know everything I knew about her life, her story, I was surprised he didn't ask for her damn zodiac sign!" Sam spewed from where he was leaning on Natasha.

Steve joined in on the teasing by adding, "and when we were looking for a roommate when Sam moved out? He immediately suggested Liv. Nobody else. We could have asked Tony, or Vis, hell even Thor or Loki. But nope first suggestion was 'hey what about Miller? She's cool to hang out with and would probably be pretty chill.' I knew then the man was in loooooOOOOOOvvveeeee."

That was what did it. That is what finally caused the tightness in my stomach to bubble up and make the following words explode from my mouth, "why does everyone insist I'm in love with Olivia fucking Miller? You couldn't pay me to ask her out. I don't love her, I have never loved her, I will never love her. If anything I see her more as the annoying little sister who won't leave me the fuck alone! She's been a part of my life for too long now and I could not give a fuck if she just up and left. Now will you all stop it with the fucking teasing!"

The group went silent. Various emotions playing out on their faces. Pepper and Wanda looked at me with slight horror on their faces, mouths agape. Natasha looked like she was two seconds from killing me. Even the guys emotions varied between pissed off and hurt. "Do I have something on my fucking face? Close your mouths and get over it, I'm going to get another fucking drink," I managed to grumble as I turned around in my seat and came face to face with the "annoying little sister" herself.

Olivia's POV

"Liv.." I barely managed to hear Bucky whisper as he faced me, tears beginning to well in my eyes.

Val and I had been heading back to the table after closing out our tabs with Jack, a round of waters to begin the sobering up process when I heard a very familiar voice beginning to raise. Hearing Bucky say that he never loved me and saw me as a little sister hurt more than I ever thought possible. I thought he was my best friend. If anything I thought he loved me at least in the way that friends do, I'd heard him say it so many times. Did he mean any of it? Was our friendship a lie, merely a relationship built out of convenience and mutual friends than one of true friendship. The emotions I felt raged inside me, bubbling and shifting from sadness to anger to hurt.

"You know if you only thought of me as an annoying little sister you could've kicked me out a long time ago instead of making me feel like you actually cared about me," the words came out broken and cracked as I tried to keep back tears and years worth of emotions.

Val squeezed my hand, almost as a reminder that she was still there. For a moment it almost looked like Bucky was holding back his own tears in his watery blues. Bucky opened his mouth to speak but I put my hand up to stop him, took in a breath and said, "no Barnes, you don't get to speak to me. Not right now. Just let me say bye to my friends and leave." I turned away from him and walked to the girls and gave them hugs, each of them mumbling how they loved me and if I needed anything I could talk to them. All I could manage was a small smile, even that felt like a grand feat.

"Livvy, you've got it all wrong, I didn't mean..." Bucky spoke as I began to walk away, causing me to turn around and abruptly face him, stopping him in his tracks.

"What did I get wrong, Barnes? Hmm? Please tell me because I heard you loud and clear. You wouldn't care if I just up and left huh? Consider your wish granted. Fuck you, James Barnes. Fuck you." I turned around and walked out, determined not to let him see the pain in my heart that was clearly plastered all over my face, manifesting itself in the form of the tears that began making their way down my face. Val squeezed my hand reassuringly as we made our way out of the bar.

"Do you want me to take you home, sweetheart?" Val asked me quietly as soft sobs began to wrack my hand and she rubbed a hand on my back comfortingly.

"I can't go back there. I can't stay there. I need to grab some things and find somewhere else to go for now," I whispered as Val pulled me into a hug, my heart breaking over and over again as I thought about what had just happened.

"Hey, it's okay. We can just head there and let you pack a bag or two for now. You can come stay with me for a few days until you find a more permanent situation, only if you want to though. I know what we talked about earlier, I want to make sure you're comfortable and have a place to sleep." Val whispered into my ear as she ran her fingers through my hair. I nodded my head at her suggestion as Val began to hail a cab for the two of us.

Earlier at the karaoke bar with Val...

We sat at the table just the two of us, Val's fingers running through my hair as we whispered secrets back and forth. It was my turn, I looked at the table where all my friends were sitting and chatting, Bucky looked even more pensive than normal making me giggle as I looked at the dip between his furrowed brows.

"I have a secret, Val. One that nooooobody knows except for me," I whispered to Val, making her chuckle in return.

"Tell me sweetheart, what is your biggest secret?"

"I like you a lot, you're like really hot, and a great kisser, and a suuuuuper nice person. But I don't see us going anywhere after this...because I think I'm in love with someone," I whispered tipsily in Val's ear.

Her face took on a number of emotions, for a moment she looked a bit like a kicked puppy and then a mischievous look overtook here face, her eyebrow raising conspiratorially. "Oh really? Would this someone's name happen to rhyme with Fucky?" she asked with a wink.

I gasped, my mouth forming a small 'o', "how did you know!?" I whispered harshly, my eyes growing wide as I began to think about all my interactions with Bucky since I met Val tonight.

She snorted at my reaction and wrapped her hand around mine, "baby girl, that man is so in love with you, you would have to be blind not to see it."

"Well, according to my license I'm not supposed to operate a vehicle without corrective lenses...so I guess I technically am blind?" I whispered back, causing Val to laugh even louder.

"Well Liv you better put on your glasses or check on your contacts because that man has looked at you like you hung the moon all night while simultaneously looking at me like I stole his puppy," she said with a knowing grin, "now all you need to do is let him know and finally end this blindness that his most likely been plaguing the two of you since you met."

"But I really don't think he likes me back. There's no way. He's James Buchanan Barnes, one of the city's most eligible bachelors, and I'm...me." I ended my sentence in a whisper, thinking back on our friendship.

"Hey, none of that self-deprecating talk here. You are gorgeous, literally one of the sexiest humans I have seen in a long time mind you, you're intelligent and you're obviously one of the best friends a person could ask for. And if he doesn't see that then he must be legally blind as well. Now, let's go close out our tabs, get you sobered up a little more, and then we can talk some more about how to tell Fucky Bucky you're in looooOOOOooove," she said with a grin.

Present

Bucky's POV

"Is anyone going to tell Buckaroo he just royally fucked up or am I going to have to be the one to say it...cause I will if nobody else wants to take a shot at it," Tony stated after we watched Olivia and Valkyrie walk out the door.

I groaned as I rubbed my face with both hands, pulling on the short strands of my hair, when a sharp pain exploded on the back of my head. "What the fuck was that for!?" I growled, turning to see Natasha staring at me with a look that I was surprised didn't have me dead and buried already.

"What the fuck was that for? More like why the fuck did you do that, Barnes? What the fuck possessed you to say such rude and hurtful things about one of your best friends, well who knows if we can even call her that because apparently she's just annoying to you? Do you even care about her? Did you ever care about her? Because we do, make this fucking right or I swear to you this next hit will be to your pretty little face," Natasha spat, stalking closer to me as Sam and Steve made their way in between us to cut some of the tension.

"Alright sweetheart, I think it's time for us to head home. Yes Buck was STUPID," Sam emphasized, tugging on Nat's arm to redirect her attention, "but he has to realize that for himself first before he can ever fix anything. Let's go home, baby," he finished softly. Natasha scoffed and turned on her heel, heading out the door leaving Sam to catch up.

"Well, that's enough drama for me. Let's head home sweetheart. Barnes, I'll see you on Monday if Romanoff or myself doesn't kill you first honestly," Tony said sarcastically, helping Pepper get her things to leave. The rest of the group dispersed slowly until it was only me and Steve left.

"If you're going to talk shit about me you might as well do it now before we get home. I don't want to wake Liv up with our yelling," I muttered as I pushed my seat back to stand up.

Steve rolled his eyes and let out an angry huff, "you'll be lucky if she ever speaks to you again after the shit you said. Now let me just ask you this before we go home, what the fuck possessed you to say all of that? You know we were just teasing you."

"First of all language," I muttered receiving a sharp look from Steve, "I don't know, it was like hearing all of you call me out just made me feel worse and worse. I don't know why I said that Steve, I love Liv. She's one of my best friends. She's been there for me through my ups and downs and has never once let me down. She makes me breakfast, she helps me clear out bad dates and I do the same for her. I don't want her to leave. I want her to stay. Forever."

Steve's eyebrows rose in surprise at the end of my little declaration, leaving me confused and oblivious as to what I said to make him look like that.

"Buck...I think you're more in love with Olivia than you think. I think she's your person. Your forever person," Steve said, slowly and knowingly, a dopey look taking over his face.

"Nah, she's my best friend. Like yeah I love her, but as a friend you know?" I stated, almost as if I was trying to convince myself that what I said was true. Steve just rolled his eyes as we hailed a cab back to the apartment.

"I'll let her rest and spend the day tomorrow and then I'll apologize, I hate when Livvy's mad at me," I said softly as Steve opened the door to our apartment and we headed to the kitchen for some water.

"Here, let me take some to Liv's room. She's most likely asleep already, you know how getting drunk makes her pass out. She'll probably need some Advil too," I said, almost automatically making a hangover care package to take to Liv's room, not even noticing Steve's attention was on his phone and he wasn't listening to a word I said.

I made my way down the hall and lightly tapped on Liv's door in case she was still awake. When I received no response I slowly pushed the door open, hoping Steve had been able to apply that WD-40 to the hinges so they wouldn't creak as much and wake her up. Liv was nowhere to be found. Her bed was empty and her closet door was open, showing half of her clothing gone. Confused I went to the bathroom she shared with Steve and noticed her toothbrush and other toiletries were also missing. Almost as if she was...gone.

"Steve, Liv isn't here and some of her stuff is missing! It was here when we left for the club..." I started as I rushed back to the living room to see Steve looking at me, a sad look on his stupid golden retriever face.

"Um, I just got a text from her phone. She's staying at Val's hotel for a few days, Buck. While she tries to find a new place. I'm sorry."

Steve kept talking but I couldn't hear the words. It was like someone stuffed cotton into my ears. Like someone was trying to talk to me but my head was underwater and I couldn't hear anything but muffled conversation. Liv had left. She'd come back but only to get the rest of her stuff. She left me. My best friend left. Fuck I love her, I don't want her to leave. Oh fuck...

"Holy shit I fucking love her."

conjure up everything you have cause I want to know if you have any book recommendations (any genre will do)

BOY DO I. I ended up going off on all of these but know that I love all of these books deeply.

So first off I have to mention Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein. I read this book for the first time when I was 16 and it changed who I am as a person. Also I picked two of my names from this book. It starts off as a kind of journal/diary/confession of our main character (Queenie) about her time in a Nazi prison in France after being caught while trying to infiltrate the country. They tell her to tell them everything she knows about the Allied war effort, specifically looking at aerial assaults, which gives Queenie an excuse to talk about how she met her best friend. The buys her time for a while, as she does sprinkle in what looks like useful information into her narrative but eventually her time runs out. Make no mistake, this book is a tragedy and will tear your heart out in more ways than one. It's very slow going but I promise it'll be worth it if you can get into it.

In the same vein, I also recently finished the Paris Orphan by Natasha Lester. This book follows a model turned journalist named Jessica May (based on the actual photographer Lee Miller) as she deals with sexism and misogyny during the war effort in trying to do what she wants to do, which is reporting on the war front. Jess meets a soldier named Dan who she instantly connects with while trying not to die in a trench because the field hospital she was supposed to be stationed at turned out to be under fire, and he introduces her to a child he has been looking after since his brother was killed (it's not his brother's child, she's the child of two French citizens who were trying to flee the country and couldn't take a child with them, but she takes to Jess and Dan as her parental figures very quickly). This one is also a bit heavier and includes suicide and rape, but it is still very very good.

Next I'll jump briefly to non-fiction and recommend the book T. Rex and the Crater of Doom by Walter Alvarez. It's written by one of the lead scientists trying to figure out what killed the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. While it is about geology and physics, it's not too dense and written in a way most people will understand what's going on, and explanations are provided for anything that wouldn't be comprehensible to the average lay person. Absolutely fascinating read.

Then we have an Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir. I found this one on youtube and it sounded interesting and boy was it. It's a fantasy novel set in the Middle East/Western Asia and incorporates the culture into the story very well. It follows two main characters, the son of the overbearing military leader who just wants to run away and live a quiet life and the daughter of two scholars who wants to see her people free to live their lives without fear of being enslaved. Laia, the scholar girl, watches her only remaining family killed and imprisoned before her very eyes, barely managing to escape herself and looks for help in the resistance. Elias, the military leader's son, is planning on running away to the South before he is nominated to take part in a series of trials to become the next Emperor and decides to stay. While I wasn't the biggest fan of the romance in this book, it's not overbearing. Content warnings for violence, death, rape, and slavery for this one.

And finally, Cain by Jose Saramago. This one was recommended to me by one of my professors last semester and it's a relatively quick read at like 160 pages. It's a bible retelling focusing on Cain, where he is cursed by God to wander the world for the rest of his days. He finds himself traveling through time (or in the words of the book, different presents) and interrupting different bible stories to spite God. The writing style takes a little bit to get used to as it's just very long sentences with dialogue only indicated by the usage of capital letters starting new dialogue tags, but it doesn't take very long to get used to it. As for content warnings, if you'd find it in the bible you'll find it here (death, rape, incest mentions).
