The NFL’s best remaining free agents, by position

The new league year is here, but not every big name has been signed yet.
The official start to the new NFL league year is here, with a new collective bargaining agreement and all. It also comes at a time when the world is upended by the coronavirus pandemic, but other than changes to travel and locking down team facilities, NFL free agency is continuing unabated.
With the legal tampering period beginning on March 16, many deals were already agreed upon before free agency actually began. Some became official right at 4 p.m. ET when the new league year kicked off, while others have yet to be finalized until teams can conduct physicals. We’ve also seen a high number of franchise tags this offseason, with players like Dak Prescott and Chris Jones sticking with their teams.
Even after all that, there are a slew of free agents looking for a landing spot in 2020. Below, we’ll point you to the best available players at each position, with updates throughout free agency. Note that not every signing is included, namely for players at the bottom of the roster.
Quarterback

We already saw two blockbuster wide receiver trades involving DeAndre Hopkins and Stefon Diggs. The Cowboys didn’t let Amari Cooper hit the open market, as they signed him to a lucrative long-term deal. The Bengals tagged A.J. Green, but that still left some compelling names on the market.

Ryan Hawkins Built a Twin-Turbo Trans Am For the Street
A while back, we heard of a twin-turbo Trans Am that was being built near us, and just as quickly, we heard that it was blown up. The lesson we can all learn from Ryan Hawkins of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, is that when you go big, you’re bound to find virtually every weak point. When Ryan said he put his car back together for the millionth time, we rushed over to take some photos.
To be fair, this isn’t really a knock on Ryan—he’s built quite the beast. At just less than 1,200 ponies to the rear wheels, lots of parts are put under a ton of stress. Ryan joked that the car has undergone quite a few changes since he purchased it on Valentine’s Day 2005.

“There’s been a few different engines in this car, but like all cars, it’s never quite done,” Ryan said. “I wanted a street car that could run 8.50s in the quarter and take it everywhere without issues. I just love to race and driving my car whenever and wherever I want!” Ryan then went on to tell us that, despite his long list of broken parts, he has driven the car on a 250-mile, round-trip jaunt to the track to blast down the lanes a couple times. So it’s pretty fair to say the goal of having a fast and daily driver is pretty well buttoned up.
Looking at the car, you can see it’s an all-business thumper. The interior and exterior remain largely stock, minus the giant Mickey Thompson Pros and Weld Racing Vektor wheels. It would be tempting to think this Trans Am is a tarted-up LS1 made to have the appearance of fast, but can’t bring home the bacon. Like we said, it would be tempting—until you saw the parachute sticking out the back. That’s when it’s obvious you’ve made a horrible error in judgment.
It’s fair to say Ryan has made a lot of the best life choices and built himself quite the machine. He admits he puts about 3,000 miles a year on the car, but considering he lives his life one quarter-mile at a time, that’s 12,000 rocket-ship rides.
Tech Notes
What: 1999 Pontiac Trans Am named “TTTA”
Owner: Ryan Hawkins
Where: Cottage Grove, MN
Engine: Ryan started with Dart LS Next block and punched it out to 427 ci with a Callies Dragon Slayer crank, Callies 6.125-inch Ultra H-Beams, and Wiseco 18cc pistons with all the machine work performed by Jakson Stevens. Then Ryan slapped on a set of Trick Flow 245 cylinder heads that were CNC-ported and hand-finished by Brian Tooley. The Callies cam was custom-ground for 0.632/247 intake lift and duration and 0.632/251 on the exhaust side. It makes for quite the unique thump. The twin Turbonetics 75s flow through reverse truck manifolds and twin Frozen Boost A2W intercoolers. All that feeds a Nick Williams 102mm throttle-body backed by a Precision Metal Craft intake and mixes with the E85 through FIC 200-pound injectors.
Ignition: Stock ignition system with a custom ECM tune by CJTunes and an Eboost2 boost controller with an MSD two-step limiter.
Exhaust: Ryan’s exhaust starts life as a set of GM factory truck manifolds that get reversed, chopped, and reworked to feed the turbos. After that, the exhaust is a one-off piece constructed by Nate Shaw at One Guy’s Garage that includes a 3.5-inch Mufflex system with the cats removed.
Drivetrain: Harnessing all that power is a North Texas Converter–built 4L80E with an NTC triple-disc 3,400 stall converter. Ryan controls it all with a TCI Outlaw shifter and the well-timed flick of a gunslinger. Out back, the meats are driven by a MWC fabbed 9-inch rearend with 3.25:1 gears and Strange 35-spline axles.
Suspension: The front suspension is fairly stock, except for Afco 350-pound springs with Afco DA Big Gun shocks. The front K-member was replaced with a PA Racing piece. The rear got the Afco DA coilover treatment with a MWC torque arm and Panhard bar setup. We bet with some serious attention to suspension, Ryan would hit a low-8-second pass easily.
Brakes: The fronts are stockers and the rears are a Strange Engineering four-piston setup made strictly for drag racing.
Wheels/Tires: On the front, Kumho 205/75/15s are wrapped around Weld Racing Vektor RT wheels measuring 4-1/2 inches wide. Out back, a 15×10 Weld sport double beadlocks to keep the MT Pros in place.
Interior: No frills will be seen here; it’s all business with Auto Meter ES gauges for trans temp, oil pressure, and fuel pressure. The front seats have been swapped for Corbeau FX1 Pros with RJH camlock five-point harnesses. Nate Shaw of One Guys Garage installed the MWC chromoly 10-point rollcage.
Paint/Body: Stock paint and stock appearance were the goals here, the US Exotics Superhawk hood is about the only giveaway that something more powerful than the stock engine resides below it in the engine compartment. It was painted to match the already mirror-like black paint.
Weight: 3,850 pounds.
Elapsed Time: 8.53 at 168 mph.
