The Foxhole Camp (All for the Game slasher movie AU)

BIG UPDATE : Some concepts art are out you can find them on my Tumblr account! ALSO CHAPTER 1 IS OUT

WARNING -> Spoilers for All for the Game trilogy and dark themes (horror)

I GOT SO INSPIRED BY THIS FANART BY @kururusti, the horror atmosphere coming from that fanart gave me literal chills, I love it.

I just had a crazy idea : what if AFTG wasn't about sports and mafia, but was a 1980s/90s slasher horror movie?

I thought of this because when I was younger I went to a French Summer Camp called "La Renardière" (literally meaning something close to "The Foxhole") and also because I'm a big fan of classic horror movies taking place in summer camps, such as Friday the 13th and Sleepaway Camp.

So, my plot idea is that in this universe, all of the Foxes are not sports player, but summer camp councelors, and they have to take care of kids. And Neil's dad is a slasher coming after them (let's keep his nickname "The Butcher", it's perfect for a slasher).

My plot idea is that Neil is the son of a murderous man (who is not a mafia boss in this version, he's just some crazy dude with an axe) and he ran away with his mother because the Butcher tried to kill them (think of movies like The Shining). They're still on the run because the Butcher really wants to finish the job (not sure why tho I have to think more about it). Like in the original story, Neil's mother gets killed and he is still chased by Nathan. One day the Butcher attacks him in the forest and leaves him to die (well I guess Nathan thought he had killed Neil or something like that, but he was just badly injured and survived). The councelors of the Foxhole Camp find him wounded in the forest while doing camp activities with the kids and decide to take care of him. Wymack who is the person running the camp offers him a job there after he recovers from his injuries (and I 100% imagine Andrew taking care of his wounds ❤️‍🩹). The Butcher will somehow discover that Neil isn't dead and he will try to murder all of them.

Now I'll do a quick summary of how I imagine each character's role with pictures from horror movies to illustrate the vibe (I might do my own concept arts later!!).

Note that the gifs I picked are NOT actor headcanons, it's mostly characters or concepts that inspired my ideas. I'll give the name of each movie/TV show if you're interested.

Also, I forgot to mention, but I imagine this AU taking place in the 80s, with a similar vibe/aesthetic to Stranger Things.

NEIL JOSTEN

(gif is Tommy Jarvis from Friday the 13th)

As I said, the Butcher was originally after Neil, meaning that in that AU he has the role of the Final Girl. Well...Final boy? Let's say final babygirl. He is the character who knows the killer personaly and has a deep childhood history with them (like Laurie Strode from the Halloween saga). Like in the original, he is very secretive and pretends to be someone else because he is afraid his father might find out that he is still alive. He becomes a camp councelor with the other Foxes and loves to play Exy with the kids (Exy still exists in that AU as part of the camp activities). I also imagine that he has no clue how to take care of kids and is still oblivious af. I mean...imagine that guy looking after children it's the funniest thing ever. I'm sure a lot of them ask him about how he got his scars.

At first he doesn't tell the Foxes what really happened to him and pretends he was attacked by a wild animal.

ANDREW & AARON MINYARD

Okay maybe I was wrong when I said Neil taking care of kids would be the funniest thing...ANDREW DOING THAT IS EVEN FUNNIER. I kinda imagine him to be like a councelor helping Abby Winfield in the Infirmary (and yeah he steals meds and alcohol). He still has his dark and mysterious vibe (and I kinda imagine him dressing in a similar fashion to JD from Heathers, hence my gif choice). He would also be the guy suspected to be the killer (like Eddie Munson in Stranger Things 4), because he still has his mental health issue in that version. I also think it would be interesting to keep the backstory he has with Aaron and their mother, except they end up in a summer camp and not in an Exy team (it makes even more sense for people to think that he is the killer because of the rumors he killed his mom). Most of the kids find him terrifying, but i'm sure most of them see him as a rockstar or living urban legend. As in the books, he really doesn't give a fuck about his job. He will also be the one to discover Neil's secret, and I want a scene where he directly fights with the Butcher. I also imagine a cute romantic scene where Neil and him will go swimming in the lake at night (i'll probably make a fanart of this <3).

Aaron wouldn't change much compared to the books, I just think he would be really pissed when people accuse his brother of being the killer (while not being sure himself that he isn't). He would often leave the camp without telling people in order to see Kathy (who doesn't work there at all), leading people to believe at some point that he might be dead. I also want a scene where he pretends to be Andrew (who is chased by people who think he is the killer) in order to save him.

Drake, who knows that Andrew is working at a camp councelor, will try to trespass the camp at night in order to get to Andrew. And well...I guess Aaron will kill him as well and it will add more tension within the group (as if there was not enough murders happening there).

NICKY HEMMICK

Nicky would stay true to himself: proud to be gay and flirty with the male councelors, even though it must be harder for him since this AU takes place in the 80s. I imagine to be the funny guy of the bunch, throwing one-liners at the killer. I think that he would be more invested in the job than Andrew and Aaron.

ALLISON REYNOLDS + SETH GORDON

(I almost wanted to put a gif of Allison Reynolds from Breakfast Club as a joke but well...It's Chris from Carrie, I'd love to see Allison with that haircut)

She would be the stereotypical bimbo, but with more personality when you get to know her. I think Seth would be the first one to die and it would impact her character development and make her wanna take revenge on the Butcher. I imagine Seth to be like the stereotypical jock, still a jerk. This time he is killed by Nathan's axe and not because of Riko. I don't have much more ideas for them yet, but I love to imagine that Allison starts as a typical bitch and then she learns how to survive and becomes a badass character (like Emma Mountebank from the horror game The Quarry).

I think that Seth would be killed while the two of them are...Well...Doing... what camp councelor couples do in 80s horror movies... Allison somehow manages to escape the Butcher and to tell the others that Seth died.

RENEE WALKER

I don't have much ideas for Reenee yet but I'm open for suggestions if you guys have ideas. I think her story would stay similar to the original books as well. I just love to imagine that she tries to teach Andrew how to act more friendly with the kids, and making fun of him when as fails miserably to be a sociable human being (come on Andrew, the kids are freaked out by your crazy medicated smile). I also think that in their freetime they like to hang out and throw knives on the camp's archery targets. She is probably one of the most loved councelors.

DAN WILDS

(gif is Deena Johnson from Fear Street)

Dan is trying to do what's best for the kids. Her group would still be divided with the monsters on the other side because she is part of the ones who believe that Andrew might be the killer. She is sceptical when Neil tries to tell the Foxes that there is a murderer running around. Wymack puts her in charge when he has to leave the camp (not knowing that Kevin...well, you know their secret) and she takes that role very seriously, as the leader of the gang and "the rational one".

MATT BOYD

I think that Matt would often try to play the role of the hero, fighting the Butcher many times to protect his friends. I don't have much ideas for him either but I'm open for suggestions!

KEVIN DAY + THE RAVENS

In this version I think that Kevin has something to do with the Butcher too. I'm not sure what, but I'd like to keep the idea that he knows Neil from his former life as well. Maybe he was another victim that survived, or one of his relatives was killed by the Butcher in front of his eyes. In this AU the Ravens are camp councelors from a rival Summer Camp (Evermore Camp). Kevin used to be part of them but he ran away because they have questionable methods when it comes to taking care of the kids (Riko put that fucking knife down, will ya?). Riko would be a psycho bully and a minor antagonist. He would also attack the Foxes and use the Butcher's murders as a cover-up.

Kevin and Riko take the rivalry between the Foxhole Camp and Evermore Camp very seriously. They often battle against each other in events such as Exy competitions and Capture the flag. The Foxhole Camp is considered to be a shitty and dangerous summer camp while Evermore Camp is for rich kids (in a similar vibe to the rivalry between Shadyside and Sunnyvale kids in Fear Street).

THE BUTCHER A.K NATHAN WESNINSKI

Our slasher!! As I said before he would be obsessed with the idea of killing Neil and the Foxes in the most gruesome way possible. The chemestry between the two will be very personal, like most killer vs final girl dynamic in slasher movies. I'm sure he will have some second winds... As for how he will look I don't know for sure? I like the idea that he is wearing an Exy helmet, in a similar fashion to Jason Voorheese's iconic hockey mask.

i HATE how scripted delena's porch kiss looks. it's meant to be this spontaneous, "i just can't take it anymore" moment where he kind of catched her off guard and sweeps her off her feet. yet it just looks like nina is waiting for ian to finish his lines and then walk to her so that they can hold their lips together for the count of 10. it bother's me so much. if you're gonna do it, do it right. olitz is coming up on the blog recently and i HATE them too but at least they do this shit RIGHT

Yep. The blatantly scripted/contrived nature of DE scenes has been talked about quite frequently on here. I find the most egregious to be the shirt rip in 5x16:

The thing about ripping clothes for me is that it’s hardly ever done in a way that seems realistic or natural, like there’s no reason for why Elena couldn’t just take off his shirt

with the rain kiss being a close second:

It was random AF. They were just outside and it started raining and they stayed in the rain for literally no reason. It was such a contrived kiss, like it was clearly made to be fan service instead of there actually being any kind of context.

Like Nathan for Haley in the rain because he wants her so much

With Scott and Kira, there’s a storm and they just have to see each other anyway after spending a summer apart

The O.C. was purposefully trying to recreate an iconic kiss with Summer and Seth

Pam and Jim, it happens to be raining, they’re at a gas stop, it’s not the most romantic environment but Jim can’t put off proposing to Pam anymore, he has to do it now

BIOGRAPHY:

Nathan Scott was raised to never want anything, as the son of Dan and Deb Scott. But, life wasn't always perfect. He knew his father had a bastard so, and he hated the kid, because he existed. He knew they were only several months apart, and he just hated him. It wasn't like they traveled in the same circles though. Nathan was popular, head of the basketball team, propular girlfriend. But, that didn't mean he didn't make him miserable when he could.

It wasn't all easy though. His fa her was obsessed with his basketball career, since the time he could dribble a basketball. He wasn't stupid. He knew it was more about his dad, than it was about him. His family was pretty much crazy.

His life got even crazier when his 'brother' joined the basketball team and he made his life hell for it, only easing off, when he promised Haley James he'd ease off, if she tutored him. He'd made a bet he could get with her. But, he hadn't expected her to make such an impression on him. Everything kind of changed, after that.

His parents decided to divorce, and sick of them trying to put him in the middle, he emancipated himself. He and Lucas get along on off weeks, and he and Haley, well that was another story. It was normal to get married in high school, right? Everyone said he changed, and maybe they were right...until she left and went on the road. He reverted to before and even when she returned, he was hard on her, and Lucas both.

Eventually, he worked it out with them all, but things are never easy with his life, and he didn't always make the best choices. But one thing was good, for sure and that was holding his baby son for the first time, on his graduation day.

In college, he went all-American and nearly lost it all a few years later, when he went through a glass window, and hurt his back. But over time, he got it back, and with the support of his family, finally made the NBA. But sometimes, dreams changes and ability to hold his family becomes more important.

VERSES:

I have never had a dad who wished I was a stain on a bed sheet

Nathan Scott, younger son of Dan Scott, or if you ask Dan or Nathan, only son of Dan Scott, is pretty much the star of the Tree Hill Ravens basketball team. He's popular, has an attitude, and has been known to bully people. The thing he hates most: the existence of his father's bastard son, Lucas. What Nathan didn't anticipate was his effort to get under Lucas skin after he joined the team, to change his whole life.

I already know my future

The last thing that Nathan would have imagined a year ago, is that he would be married, and that he and Lucas would be friends, and even brothers? But, he's trying to navigate it the best he can, and deal with basketball. But, the pressure from his dad hasn't gone away, despite being emancipated. Being married this young isn't as easy as it looks, and there's this asshole singer who is giving him a bad feeling, who seems to be 'helping' Haley.

Like a man possessed

Married or not, he still didn't always handle things the best, and well, neither did Haley. First, she went on tour, and he went completely off the deep end. But, it just got worse. He was self-destructing and fast. She reappeared the night before he left for High Flyers for the summer, and he didn't know how to handle it, so he didn't.

The roots are still there. It just takes time.

Senior year is starting. He is Captain of the Tree Hill Ravens. His game is looking better than ever. Everything should be going great, except it wasn't. He still was married, and...he didn't know if he wanted a divorce...wanted to be married...wanted to punch Lucas, or drive another race car into another wall. He'd tried reverting to the old Nathan Scott before, and it hadn't really worked. Now, he was trying to co-exist in the same town as Haley, who kept saying she wasn't going anywhere. But, he didn't know if he could trust her. He and Lucas were still at odds, despite the fact that deep down, he knew it wasn't Lucas' fault that she'd left. He was slowly letting her back in, but it would take time, among other things. This year would be one he would never forget though, one of loss, pain, and new life.

All-American

Getting into college wasn't easy for Nathan. The mess with point shaving, to try to pay back Dante, had made him unappealing to Duke, and so many other schools. If it wasn't for Whitey, he wouldn't be playing ball anywhere. He wound up playing for Whitey, with Lucas as Assistant Coach at Gilmore University, while he and Haley worked to balance school, life and raising their baby, James Lucas Scott. Eventually, Nathan transfers to University of Maryland, College Park, where he was a First-Team All American.

I am not good at being vulnerable.

During the next several years, Nathan continues to work towards the NBA, even getting a shoe deal. It is looking like he is going to be drafted to the Seattle Sonics, but it all changed when he got into a fight, that led to him getting thrown through a window, and losing feeling in his legs. He felt like everything had been taken from him, and he started drinking all the time, depressed. Over time and realizing he needs to be there for Haley and Jamie, he is able to stand up and try to work his way back, even working with a troubled teen on Lucas' basketball team. But, things never stay easy in his life and his comeback was difficult, as was his life at home, due to problems with the nanny, his father and many other things. He tries to face things as a family, but sometimes, things are hard.

I got called up.

After trying slamball and nearly injuring himself again, Nathan makes the D-Team Charleston Chiefs. He faces yet more adversity, as the player with the current #23 tells him that he's not just going to let him walk on the team. He butts heads with a couple of the players, but eventually, he finally gets his call up to the Charlotte Bobcats, finally making it to the NBA.

You have saved me so many times.

Life as an NBA player is not a bad life to have. Nathan Scott worked hard to get there, and it's nice playing in Charlotte, since he gets to be close to family, unless he's on the road. His agent has become like family and he really likes being a Bobcat, and likes watching Jamie grow. As he gets closer to a contract year, he's not hearing what he wants to hear and he's starting to get worried about it. It doesn't help that some woman is claiming to be pregnant with his child. His father manages to get her to admit she's lying, but even in the midst of everything, Haley's mom dies, and at the last moment, Clay gets him a contract to stay in Charlotte and overjoyed at Haley being pregnant, he doesn't initially tell her that the doctors think he doesn't have that much time left, with his back.

I will be leaving the game of basketball.

After Clay is shot, Nathan leaves camp and he tells Haley about his back. He wants to try to be an organ donor, even if he is not a match. He makes the hard decision to put basketball behind him. Once Clay recovers, he helps him with the new agency, and tries his hand at being a sports agent, and turns out to be a pretty good one. Life seems to be okay, even without basketball, well unless you count, getting kidnapped and nearly murdered. He was able to make peace with his dad, who died saving his life. But, he thinks it all might be okay. He's got a great family, and he doesn't hate this sports agent thing, but maybe, he'll take a vacation for a bit.

Someday is today.

Life continues in the Scott home, as Jamie and Lydia grow up. Nathan continues to work with Clay, and Nathan proves to be a good, loving father, and hasn't nearly gotten murdered recruiting athletes again. When his son passes his scoring record, he's proud of him.

They are characterized as

free-spirited, spontaneous and full of life, and their sole dramatic and narrative purpose in

the films is to inspire the creativity and passion of the fragile, insecure male protagonists, thus perpetuating the myth of women as muses and caregivers rather than independent entities with a life, dreams and ambitions of their own. In order for the male protagonist to regain a sense of masculinity and reassert their ego, they must also be imperfect and messed up enough to need saving, so the powerless guy can do something heroic in the third act» (Matteson, 2013)

From an iconographic perspective, the MPDG tends to dye her hair on eccentric colours, wear vintage dresses, listen to indie music and engage on spontaneous carpe diem behaviour that can range from socially inappropriate – such as jumping into a swimming pool n the midst of a formal party (Ruby Sparks) – to outright dangerous (Clementine’s casual alcoholism in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind).

It seems that for a lot of my young adult life I have played into this character role, partly because i think that is who I am/was, and mostly because that is the role I thought that I ought to play

I let men choke me during sex, i have mental health issues, I got addicted to weed, I dyed my hair pink and purple and I still bleach and tone it to this day.

But am I playing into this role, or have I found a category I vaguely fit into and embraced it further?

Would I be like this at all if it weren’t for the media I watched at such a formative age?

it is also important to acknowledge the fact that the MPDG label has become an easy catch-all for unusual, quirky women in film, reducing very different female characters down to a type and homogenising any notion of difference

tangent - in a world online filled with niches and 100000 different “aesthetics” no one can really just be them anymore, perhaps you can in daily life, when more disconnected from echo chambers online.

I used to be constantly online. tumblr, instagram, then tiktok. places like these are cesspits of labels and categories. are you ‘cottagecore’ or an ‘egirl’? a ‘hey mamas lesbian’ or a ‘femme’?

this tends to be more of an issue online than in real life. but this obsession with looking a certain way and ‘fitting into an aesthetic’ pushes people into obsessive consumption of clothing (often fast fashion) just to fit into the latest trend

Nathan Rabin coined the term Manic Pixie Dream Girl in order to describe a nascent filmic female trope

Rabin himself (2014), who almost ten years after coining the term MPDG apologised for it, contending that the trope «is a fundamentally sexist one, since it makes women seem less like autonomous, independent entities than appealing props to help mopey, sad white men self-actualise

However, the importance of analysing the MPDG can hardly be contested, for there is indeed an underlying common pattern in the construction of the female protagonist of many indie rom-coms produced during the 2000s insofar as their quirky liveliness is only exploited in order to help develop their male counterparts.

characterizing them as "manic" seems to imply a certain level of mental illness, an association which recalls historical connections between femininity and mental illnesses like that of hysteria.

manic pixie dream girl = unstable fairy-like ideal young woman (oh god that is me (minus the carpe diem crap))

a rendition of the nurturing woman and/or the muse

Because films are bearers of ideology, the way they construct gender and produce role models will have straight consequences on how young women negotiate their place in society and perform their femininity, directly influencing the ways they dress, speak, behave and even dye their hair – after all, it is not in vain that polka dot dresses and blue hair became popular at the same time these films were released.

creating stereotypes that excite the imagination of the male spectator while limiting the social aspirations of women and sanctioning particular forms of behaviour, not necessarily encouraging independence, intelligence or ambition.

do things because you want to, not to impress/invigorate some random dude

Indie films are particularly tailored for a certain portion of the audience, a growing subcul-ture that has come to be known as the hipsters (Zeynep & Thompson, 2011, p. 795), who-se fashion style, music taste and ethos largely determine the iconographic attributes of the MPDG (and viceversa).

hi! I’ve never listened to naddpod before, is there a particular campaign that you think I should start with?

hi anon! that’s awesome you’re thinking about giving naddpod a try! my opinion differs a little than most so i’ll give you a little info on what i think the best options are so you can see what you vibe with most.

i think most people would probably say to start with the beginning of campaign 1 (it’s the most popular campaign) and i don’t think it’s a bad option because c1 is amazing, but it’s 100 episodes which is a fairly big commitment and while it’s fun from the jump i do think it takes them an arc or so for them to really hit their stride. the vibe is very classic dnd and they have quite a few guest players at various points over the course of the campaign (adam conover, nathan yaffe, siobhan thompson, brennan lee mulligan, and zac oyama).

my personal recommendation is to start with campaign 2, eldermourne, but i’m very biased because i’m an eldermourne girlie. it has a gothic fairy tale aesthetic and it’s only 42 episodes so it’s a little less of a commitment if that matters to you. i was personally hooked on eldermourne from episode 1 and thought it had a stronger start than c1 but not everyone feels that way, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I would start here if the aesthetic particularly appeals you or if you want to start with a shorter but still full length campaign. since it’s shorter they only had one guest, lou wilson, but he plays for an entire arc and it’s a particularly amazing one!

i’ll also throw out a wild card suggestion (courtesy of @vethbrenatto, she brought it up in a conversation we had a while back about where to start naddpod) that you could also start with the mavrus chronicles (also known as hot boy summer). it’s a 7 episode mini campaign dmed by emily axford (as opposed to brian murphy, who dms most of the other campaigns) centered around the character zac oyama played when he guested on c1 and there are references to c1 but you don’t necessarily need to have listened to it to know what’s going on and i don’t believe there are any spoilers for c1 (although i could be wrong). it’s pure fun and gives you a sense of the humor of the show in a small package.

other people might have other opinions and they’re totally welcome to add them here! i hope this was helpful and that you enjoy naddpod if you end up giving it a try, i’d love to know if you do!

Getting into college wasn't easy for Nathan. The mess with point shaving, to try to pay back Dante, had made him unappealing to Duke, and so many other schools. If it wasn't for Whitey, he wouldn't be playing ball anywhere. He woundle up playing for Whitey, with Lucas as Assistant Coach at Gilmore University, while he and Haley worked to balance school, life and raising their baby, James Lucas Scott. Eventually, Nathan transfers to University of Maryland, College Park, where he was a First-Team All American.

I am not good at being vulnerable.

I got called up.
