Turn Week, Day 7: If I Could Change One Thing...
Tumblr media
Aside from the obvious wish of getting all five seasons, it's too bad the show wasn't more character-driven rather than plot-driven. I understand why it was, and I still find it absolutely great and a comfort show, but I'm the type who watches for characters and their interactions. I felt robbed of these dynamics, in particular: Ben and his father, Nathaniel (they should've talked about Samuel sometime after 1x10); Ben and Sackett (I wanted more crazy!uncle x nephew-esque shenanigans); Ben and Samuel (it would've been way more impactful to see some brotherly flashbacks prior to his d.eath), and more of the Culpers in general. Even though they were best friends who grew up together (sans Townsend), it never really felt like it since no one ever truly reminisced or cracked inside jokes, nor behaved like close friends beyond the occasional quip (unless you count the Ben x Anna prank in 2x4). Granted, I understand that it's a time of w.ar and thus, levity isn't as common, but they are human, and it'd make sense for them to behave as such from time-to-time. It can't be b.usiness 24/7.
Secondly, every Culper had some form of t.rauma, so I really wish the show had delved into that beyond the surface. Here are some thoughts centering around the individual characters:
Ben: I wanted to see more of his struggle with faith. A man of God betrayed the Cause (Rev. Worthington), and then he shot him in cold b.lood. That assuredly messed with him, and his guilty conscience had to have suffered even more so once he discovered his own side was responsible for Sarah's husband's d.eath. Then when he learned Hale's last words had been warped for the sake of furthering the Cause, rather than his friend being truly remembered as Hale wished to be, Ben learned right then and there that history could and would be altered by people he admired (GWash) to justify the means -- himself included. The knowledge that he and his friends were more or less pawns undoubtedly added to his anger in S4, in particular, and I wanted to see a genuine struggle with all of the above rather than superficial scrapings.
Abe: After his imprisonment, he definitely should have suffered from some type of P.TSD, yet he more or less just "walked it off" after shaving his beard and cleaning away the grime. Most people can't recover from that type of event unscathed, so it would've been interesting to give Abe an actual character arc beyond a.dultery and his brief turn-around in S4.
Anna: The night she was attacked and had to s.tab/s.hoot that Queen's Ranger undoubtedly stained her for a long time. Maybe an allusion to night terrors or making her jumpy could've helped, rather than just turning it into a cliché girlboss moment.
Caleb: Arguably, Caleb got s.hafted the most of this group. He always struck me as more of a punchline rather than a real person, because comic relief characters are rarely multi-dimensional in terms of development. It's sad that just when the writers were finally giving him an arc, it was cut short and sped up to meet with the time constraints. I don't think it was a poorly done arc, per se, but naturally, I wish we could've seen it drawn out and given the proper time and dedication that was originally intended.

With her father and Jean Claude called away on a sudden and urgent mission with Lieutenant Brewster, Lorraine and the rest of the family were to stay in camp and await their return.
While her mother was distraught to live more frugally and in the 'muck,' as she called it, Lorraine found that she was content to experience that which the soldiers did -- those who sacrificed so much to fight for their country's freedom. If she believed in such a thing, then why shouldn't she do any differently?
However intrigued she was, things had taken a turn for the worse the following morning when an agent for the British had attempted murder on one of Washington's staff and made off with important intelligence.
Fortunately, Nathaniel Sackett had not suffered deep enough wounds to do him in and was recovering in his tent by the next afternoon. Lorraine had volunteered to look after the man to keep the medical team from being spread too thin.
Tumblr media
"Now, Mr. Sackett, if you don't take your medicine, I'll be forced to retrieve Dr. Weston and he will enforce methods far more violent than mine to 'convince' you."
That's when she heard someone enter, turning to inform whoever it was that Sackett really shouldn't have any visitors at this time -- at least until she saw who it was.
She'd only met the esteemed and handsome young Major Tallmadge upon her family's arrival, but hadn't yet had the pleasure of speaking to him.
Rising from her seat with a pleasant smile, she greeted him with a respectful nod, "Major Tallmadge, are you here for an update on our patient's wellbeing?"

adding onto the headcanon....there was a moment, when sackett first came to camp, where caleb pulled him aside, privately, and told him about how he identified. thankfully, mercifully, the older man was accepting, and fascinated, but also willing to help with it. basically what im saying is nathaniel sackett invented testosterone gel lkdfj

Top 5 TURNT characters.
tops 5 things! // @honorhearted
1. Robert Townsend Even tho I've said in the past that Caleb was my favorite for a time, there's a reason Townsend was my first rp muse. Even rewatching his scenes now, Townsend is way more complex than the show or the fandom give him credit for. He's this radical religious figure in other characters' minds, but he's actually incredibly contemporary and selfish. His entire reasoning for not joining the ring was bc he would be inconvenienced. His motivation, like it or not, is to make money. That's why he chose to move into the city rather than stay in Oyster Bay. He's almost obsessed with having security for himself in the present and in the future.
2. Selah Strong The entire series hinges on Selah getting arrested and bc of that reason, he deserved so much more attention. He was done dirty by the screenwriters (and his canon wife!)
3. Abigail My dear sweet girl :') too smart for this series. We were only ever fed crumbs about her background, but she truly was a dark horse throughout the series. Her and Cicero's connections made them and the characters around them more knowledgeable in events/information. But her former relationships and the background on where she learned to read were nonexistent. The writers really dropped the ball not fleshing her out more bc she sTOLE all the scenes she was in, even when she didn't say anything!
4. John Graves Simcoe I hate how the writers retconned this man so much and yet he's the best villain. Not quite cartoony, but like a cockroach, we can't get rid of him! I don't think anyone but Samuel Roukin could've played this role.
5. Nathaniel Sackett Sacketttttttttttttt! Deserved more screentime and also deserved to survive the series. Felt like an afterthought after he died and I hate that bc he was responsible for so much information and subplots earlier in the season. He was really funny too.

Turn Characters as Things my Dad Said (A Beginning)
Abraham Woodhull: "You have a lettuce goatee."
Nathaniel Sackett: "I encourage self sufficiency. That's all I can say."
John Graves Simcoe: "Your head is where this knife goes."
Benjamin Tallmadge: "I try to limit my rude interactions to five a day. It's not as easy as it may seem."

Chapter 26- Luck be a Lady (Turn AMC)
SO funny story actually, this was a very conveniently placed chapter because not only is this week the 1 year anniversary of LBL, but it also happened to be when I finished the next chapter! I think this is a nice change of scenery and we get some more Ben finally! If you like it please LIKE, COMMENT, and/or REBLOG!!
“Ben sighed, a few more loose strands of hair escaping from his usually obsessively neat plait. “No,” he finally replied with a sigh, “Not since the argument a few days ago. I am fairly certain that McHenry would not even let me step foot in the building anymore, probably says that I raise the General’s blood pressure too much. He can hardly tolerate Hamilton as it is. He does not need me on top of that.” He paused before speaking once more, frustration evident in his voice as he finally turned his head to look at Caleb. “How can he be mad at me for not stopping someone when he was the one who failed to take the threat of the deserters seriously?” He was frustrated, and Caleb understood that, but frankly, not even Sackett had it figured out, so who could possibly throw such blame at the guy?
“You know that’s not true,” he denied the tall blonde’s ranted claims against the General, “The General’s just a bit distracted by the one who hasn’t died yet. Cut him some slack. No doubt it’ll hit him soon.””
Thank you to @tallmadgeandtea for beta reading/editing for me!! (And Susan, in spirit because Bug has so much personality)

Initially when I saw this, I thought it was a very odd historical name-drop to include in the show. But the more I thought about it, the more I actually grew to really love it.
As we all (jokingly) talk about, Ben has about 5,000 father figures, and he's constantly seeking validation from the men he admires. Although Nathaniel seemed like a good man and a decent father, there was clearly something lacking between them since Ben felt the need to turn to GWash, Sackett, Arnold, etc. for affirmation. And that got me thinking: since Ben, Caleb and Abe were so close growing up, what if little Ben spent a whole lot of time with the Brewsters, and thus, Benjamin Brewster became like a second father to him? If Benjamin was anything like Caleb, it's not difficult to imagine that he was warm and jovial, and thus, gave Ben the more affectionate paternal bond he undoubtedly yearned for with Nathaniel.
Do I still think the Benjamin Brewster name-drop was stupid? Yes. The Brewsters were known p.atriots (and Benjamin didn't die until 1782), so Ben could've potentially gotten Caleb's family into trouble. And as a spymaster, he should've come prepared with his actual historical alias of John Bolton. But again: I'm warming up to the idea, because thinking of this in terms of Ben waking up delirious, in pain and confused, and speaking the name "Benjamin Brewster" is destroying me with unexpected feels. Because who do you reach for/call out to when you're sick, out of sorts, and not feeling like yourself? A parent.

"With all due respect, I'm in Sackett's quarters because I'm his niece."
Alina could hardly fault her superior for believing otherwise. She highly doubted Uncle Nathaniel went around advertising his family to anyone with ears. After all, he was a very private and cautious man. It's what made him perfect for aiding in the civilian portion of Washington's spy ring. Alina herself often acted as a courier to and from New York to rendezvous with his contacts.
Tumblr media
"Are you, by chance, Major Tallmadge?" she asked, not knowing any other soldier who might have business with Sackett outside of Washington himself.
