National Cake Day
From choc to cheese, bundt to butterfly – share a slice with friends, try your hand at decorating or ask the local bakery to whip up a gorgeous gateau.
“Qu’ils mangent de la brioche!” or, “Let them eat cake!” Perhaps the most famous quote about cake ever were the words of a great French princess. Typically attributed to Marie Antoinette herself upon being informed that the peasants were so poor that they had no bread to eat during one of the famines that occurred in France during the reign of her husband, Louis XVI.
Needless to say, the ignorance and arrogance of that disdainful statement did not win either Marie Antoinette or her husband any respect or sympathy from their people, who then proceeded to behead both of them during the French Revolution!
However, none of this changes the fact that cake is arguably one of the most delicious baked goods that humans have ever made to eat, and its numerous varieties continue to astound every cake fan. For that reason, it is obvious that cake is more than deserving of its own little holiday.
The History of National Cake Day
The history of cake dates back to ancient times, and the first cakes are thought to have been made in Ancient Greece and Egypt. These first cakes were rather heavy and flat and were eaten at the end of a meal with nuts and honey.
Nowadays, this type of cake has evolved into baklava, a traditional Greek dessert and a must-try for any fan of sweet stickiness. In later years the ancient Romans also created their own version of this sweet treat, which was rather creamy and rich. However, like in many cultures around the world, this cake was often reserved for the gods and was offered to them at their temples as a sign of respect, love, and reverence.
The Oxford English Dictionary traces the English word cake back to the 13th century. During the Great Depression, it was necessary to provide easy, relatively cheap food to millions of Americans who were living in poverty, and the boxed cake mix was born. The idea turned out to be pure gold, as millions of housewives all over the United States took advantage of this way to make their lives easier.
Cakes started being used to celebrate birthdays in 19th century Western Europe and eventually earned their candles on top. But cakes are also a delightful addition to a variety of other meals and functions, from a simple family dessert to a huge catered party. Whether chocolate or black forest, angel food or the pineapple upside-down version, pretty much everyone enjoys a slice of cake.
And now, National Cake Day is celebrated throughout the world!
National Cake Day Timeline
1200s First recorded use of the word “cake”
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word “cake” can be traced back to this time. The word is likely of Viking origins from the Old Norse language.
1600s First modern cakes are baked
With advances in technology of ovens, and the use of whipped eggs (instead of yeast) for leavening, the predecessor to modern versions of cakes began. These cakes are typically round and topped with icing, often containing dried fruits and nuts.
1700s Cakes become part of birthday celebrations
In Germany, the “Kinderfest” is the celebration of a child’s birthday. Though no gifts are given, there is a cake that is decorated with the number of candles corresponding to the child’s age. Later, the industrial revolution makes the tradition even more accessible and popular.
1894 Cake recipe published in London
One of the first recipes for cake published in a cookbook appears as a Layer Cake in The Cassell’s New Universal Cookery Book.
1929 First cake mix appears
Sold in a can instead of a box, the first cake mix contained not only flour but also dried molasses, dried eggs and some other ingredients that water could be added to at home. New flavors developed and making cakes became even more varied but rather simple.
How to Celebrate National Cake Day
Everyone loves to celebrate National Cake Day! Whether making, eating or sharing this delicious dessert, this is the perfect day to enjoy a treat with ideas such as these:
Enjoy a Slice of Cake
Of course, the best way to celebrate National Cake Day is by eating cake with family and friends. It is possible to buy a number of different types of cakes to celebrate the event. Many cafes and bakeries sell cake pieces by the slice, so it’s easy to try a few different flavors.
Grab a few friends, head on over to a bakery, and fill up your plates with several different kinds. Pass the forks around and tuck into a bite of each of them. Cinnamon coffee cake, pound cake, bundt cake or strawberry shortcake. It really doesn’t matter which kind, as long as it is appreciated and enjoyed on this important bakery day.
Bake a Variety of Cakes
Have fun making your own cakes at home to mark the occasion. There are many different kinds of cake to choose from. Yeast cakes are one of the oldest types and are pretty similar to bread in texture, due to the yeast content.
Cheesecake is another type of cake that is unique and also delicious. It’s easy to find many different types of cheesecake, starting with the rich and creamy New York-style cheesecakes baked in a graham cracker crust and drowned in cherry syrup. Or, try out the healthier varieties made from cottage cheese and filled with orange and lemon peel and raisins that are lower in calories and fat and higher in protein.
Sponge cakes rely on the air trapped inside them during baking for their light texture, and are famously paired with rich butter or cream cheese-based icings for balance; however, these icings tend to be a bit complicated to make and are easily ruined, so if for those who are novice bakers, perhaps go for something a bit simpler.
Red Velvet Cakes, Carrot Cakes, and Lemon Drizzle cakes are all delicious varieties of cake that can be made with a myriad of different recipes and ingredients. So pick a type of cake that suits the needs of your family and friends the best–and then get started baking! The experience will be both fun and educational.
Take a Cake Decorating Class
Cakes are delicious to eat, but an equally exciting part of a cake is the way that the outside can be decorated in all sorts of ways. From icing roses to fondant shapes, decorating a cake with sugary sweetness is an art form all its own. Check at a local library or hobby store to see what types of cake decorating classes might be on offer. Those who get really good at cake decorating might even choose to turn it into a delightful business opportunity!
Share Cake with Others
Inherent in its size, cake is almost always meant to be shared! That means that National Cake Day is the perfect opportunity to buy (or bake) a large cake and then find some people to share it with. Coworkers, neighbors, the mailman or the teacher at the kids’ school. Anyone will feel delighted and thankful to be given a piece of cake on this day. Many of them might not even know that it’s National Cake Day, so be sure to share the news so they can get on board with it too!
Find National Cake Day Discounts and Deals
The deals tend to change each year, so pop into local bakeries to see if they are offering any freebies or discounts in honor of National Cake Day. The Cheesecake Factory, Boston Market, Mrs. Fields and Baked by Melissa are just a few of the companies who have given discounts in conjunction with past cake days. Check them out!

Duff Goldman’s Kellogg’s NYC Residency Menu
Food AND Drink
Type of Funny Food: Event
Introduced: September 2018
Location: Kellogg’s NYC
Tumblr media
Kellogg’s NYC is a now-closed “cereal cafe” that took up residence in Times Square- and then Union Square- from 2016 to 2019. In that short time, the cereal giant-owned cafe hosted a number of events, including one for National Cereal Day, and another for Pop-Tarts.
Another of these events was a two-day residency helmed by famed pastry chef and ‘Ace of Cakes’ Duff Goldman. Goldman created his own cereal-themed menu for the occasion, which included food- main course and dessert alike, and one drink!
The menu options were:
Tumblr media
Corn Flakes Crunchy Mac ‘n’ Cheese, a baked bacon mac and cheese topped with Corn Flakes,
Tumblr media
Special K Red Berry Yummy Frisée Salad, a curled endive salad with Special K Red Berry croutons, whole grain mustard vinaigrette, and cranberries, served with Corn Flakes-baked potatoes au gratin,
Tumblr media
Snap Crackle Poppin’ Matzo Balls with Chicken Soup, Rice Krispies-based matzo balls in vegetable-filled chicken soup,
Tumblr media
Kellogg’s Krispie Fish Sticks, Rice Krispies and Corn Flakes-battered cod sticks served in an actual fish bowl with your choice of assorted sauces,
Tumblr media
Sunny-sensational Lahmajoun, a Turkish flatbread made with with bran dough drizzled with labneh and mint and covered in date puree, raisins, shredded haloumi, tumeric parsley pesto, lamb and sesame Raisin Bran sausage, and diced white onion,
Tumblr media
Big Apple Jacks Bowl, a caramel-drizzled “deconstructed” caramel apple with a “snickerdoodle surprise” and peanut candy clusters, served in an event-exclusive bowl designed by Goldman,
Tumblr media
Frosted Flakes Pumpkin Spiced-Up Rompope, a drink filled with Pumpkin Spice Frosted Flakes custard and topped with Frosted Flakes streusel and cinnamon whipped cream,
Tumblr media
G-r-r-reatest Banana Kream Pie Ever, a maple-cinammon banana cream pie with Frosted Flakes crust with milk chocolate and Krave inside,
Tumblr media
and the Not So Mini Mini-Wheats Upside Down Cake, a pineapple and Frosted Mini-Wheats cake a la mode with pan-toasted Rice Krispies.
Interestingly, one offering was present in advertising for the event, but didn’t seem to make it to the official menu. This was some flavor (ha) of Froot-Loops-themed macaron and cookie with a color-changing rainbow custard that came out of a toothpaste tube.
Tumblr media
Donations made during the short residency were given to the charity No Kid Hungry. Customers could also buy themed merchandise, such as the aformentioned Duff-designed cereal bowl.

So growing up my mom and I didn't really do traditions. I'm talking about turkey on Thanksgiving, red and green for Christmas, candy for Valentine's day, fireworks for the 4th of July, etc. We're both autistic so a tradition that we didn't enjoy was just tossed out the window because neither of us care about making dead people happy. But over the years I've made my own personal traditions and I thought I'd share since "Turkey Day" is coming up.
So here are my personal traditions (my mom doesn't even join me for some of these):
Thanksgiving is the Lamb Holiday in our household. It's our favorite meat and it's one of the few meats my mom can digest (enzyme problems) so we normally make lamb kofta b'siniyah with naan and whatever sides sound good. (we're not doing that this year because we just moved and mom is working on Thanksgiving so we're not celebrating)
For Valentine's day we make each other gift baskets with things like books, face masks, candles, trinkets, and yeah ok there's also a lot of chocolate involved. Sometimes my mom makes her special pudding or I'll make a chocolate cream pie
For Halloween I watch all the scary episodes of one of my favorite TV shows (Psych) and I normally read Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None and watch the Aiden Turner mini series. I still have Halloween candy left over this year.
For Christmas we open one or two presents on Christmas Eve and I bake a LOT of pies the day of (they're my specialty). Every year we get a new ornament at some point during the year. This year I got a white ceramic pomegranate ornament. I spend the whole year compiling gift ideas for my mother. Every time she mentions something she likes but would never get herself I put it on the list.
For my birthday I generally make myself a pineapple upside down cake because it's my favorite. For New Years (my bday is new years eve) I stay up until midnight and watch the Pirates of the Caribbean Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner wedding at midnight to start my year off right.
Fourth of July is the worst holiday IMO. Like yeah, independence is great, but I don't like hotdogs or burgers and fireworks are the bane of my existence. The parades are cool tho. My "tradition" is to just hide in my room and block the noise as much as possible while watching a funny show. Mom does the same thing because like I said we're both autistic and so we don't like fireworks. Anyway, this year I have heavy duty noise cancelling headphones.
August 2nd is National Ice Cream Sandwich Day and we observe this holiday religiously. Ice cream is in multiple flavors and we often have a fire.
I put googly eyes all over my moms possessions on April Fool's. She finds this odd. I find it very funny.
Every so often there is a Friday the 13th. When this happens I bake a pie because of a children's show I watched when I was little (Ruby Gloom).
Mother's Day is a poem or a short story that I write and give to my mom. I also try and get flowers.

Dazzle your friends and family with these classic Mini Pineapple Upside Down Cakes. Fruity, gooey, and caramelly this is one of America's favorite cakes. These individual cakes are perfect with any number of dinners from a down home barbecue to an upscale dinner party. No more dense cakes. The two step yellow cake is tender, featherlight, stays moist for days and is effortless to make. Made in eight ounce ramekins, these timeless cakes when flipped over after baking, make an impressive presentation of glistening caramelized fruit over a fluffy cake. It became popular after an early 20th-century Dole engineer invented a machine that would slice that company's signature product — pineapple — into perfect rings; the first recipe appeared in print in 1923. The Daily Meal has a fascinating read on the origin of this cake. And here's a fun fact. I'll bet you didn't know April 20th is National Pineapple Upside Down Cake Day. Now you do! Be sure to check out these other fruit based recipes: Blueberry Lemon Pizza in a Brioche Crust, Sunnyside Up Apricot Pastries, Roasted Peaches with Amaretti Crisp, Pina Colada Cake, and Easy Pina Colada No Bake Cheese Cake. Why you want to make this recipe It's a classic cake which is simple to make and yields great results. Individual desserts are a great way to say "you are special". Uses simple ingredients that are probably in your pantry. Easy to make yet delicious and beautiful. Simply put, it tastes incredible. The brown sugar and butter caramelize the pineapple. Variations Different fruits can be substituted. Canned apricots, fresh plums pitted and sliced in half, sliced apples, and fresh peaches are a few. Sprinkle pecans or coconut over the butter before adding the brown sugar. For a spiced version, add 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and nutmeg to the cake batter. Fresh pineapple slices can be used. Blot dry also. Add the last of the liquid. Step 15. Mix another 30 seconds. Step 16. Pour the batter over the pineapple in the ramekins. Step 17. Bake the cakes as instructed. Step 18. To release the cakes, place a small plate over the top of the ramekin. Step 19. Flip the plate so the ramekin is now upside down on the plate. Step 20. Pull the ramekin up and away from the cake. Use a pancake turner to transfer the still hot cake to a cooling rack.
RECIPES FAQs Why is my pineapple upside down cake soggy? The pineapple needs to be throughly blotted dry or the moisture from the wet pineapple can seep into the cake batter changing the texture and making it wet. How do I keep the pineapple and the cake from sticking to the pan? Butter the ramekins all the way up to the top very well. A non-stick baking spray also works very well. Spray the entire container well before adding the melted butter. Release within 5 to 10 minutes. How long does a pineapple upside down cake last? It will last 2 days, covered, at room temperature or 4 days in the refrigerator. Storage Instructions These mini pineapple upside down cakes are best served warm or at room temperature on the day they are made. They can be made that day and kept at room temperature covered with foil after they cool. To warm, place them, still covered in a 350°F oven for about 10 minutes. Store any leftovers at room temperature for a few days. Expert Tips Be sure to blot the pineapple and cherry very dry or the extra moisture will seep into the cake while baking altering the baked cake texture. Change the paper towels as necessary. Don't press so hard you split the pineapple ring. Brush the butter all the way to the top of the ramekins so the cakes release easily and completely. Either whole or 2% milk can be used in the cake. These are made in 6 eight ounce ramekins with straight sides. The butter for the cake needs to be very soft but not melted or runny. It should be about 74°F. The ramekins will be hot but they need to be removed within 5 to 10 minutes of coming from the oven. Start at 5 minutes. I fold a kitchen towel and place it over the ramekin to remove it. See photos above. Transfer the hot cake to a cooling rack with a pancake turner to finish cooling. If you want a garnish, serve with rum whipped cream or better yet, Malibu rum which is coconut flavored and delicious. Just add a tablespoon of rum to a cup of heavy cream and a quarter cup of powdered sugar. Whip until fairly stiff. It shouldn't be runny or melty but about 73°F.In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, 2 tablespoons milk, almond, and vanilla extracts. Set aside.Place the dry ingredients in the bowl of a mixer. Mix on low for 30 seconds to blend. Add the butter and remaining milk. Mix on low speed just to moisten the dry ingredients. Increase the speed to medium and beat for 2 minutes.Add half of the egg mixture and beat for about 30 seconds. Repeat with the other half.
Add about 1/2 cup batter to each of the ramekins. Spread flat.Bake for 28 to 33 minutes until golden brown and a tester comes out clean. When you test make sure to skewer only the cake. Do not go to the bottom of the ramekin.Cool 5 to 10 minutes and release the cakes.Place a small flat dish on top of the ramekin. Flip it over and carefully remove the hot ramekin. I used a folded kitchen towel over the ramekin to remove it.Remove the cake from the dish with a pancake turner and place it on a cooling rack.Serve it warm or at room temperature. There is always an abundance of photos to guide you in the post. As always, I recommend using a scale for accuracy and consistency.  Flour, in particular, is difficult to measure by volume.  For my recipes, I use 140 grams per cup of unsifted  all-purpose, bread or whole wheat flour and 125 grams of cake flour. Others may use different weights so use whatever is given in their recipes. ***************************************************** Be sure to blot the pineapple very dry or the extra moisture will seep into the cake while baking altering the baked cake texture and possibly making it wet. National Pineapple Day
In a salad, in a drink, or on a pizza, there really is no place where pineapple can’t be used. That’s perfect, because today is National Pineapple Day, and we want to enjoy as much of it as possible!
Pineapple is native to the tropical and subtropical parts of the Americas. The first written references to it are attributed to Christopher Columbus, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés, who found it in the West Indies. Natives were not only eating pineapple at the time, but were also using it to make wine. The Europeans gave the fruit the name they did because it resembled pinecones.
The Portuguese helped spread it around the world. They brought it to the island of Saint Helena shortly after they arrived there in 1502. They then brought it to Africa, and then to India by 1550. By the seventeenth century, pineapple was growing in most tropical areas of the world. Today, the biggest producers of pineapple are Brazil, Costa Rica, China, India, the Philippines, and Thailand.
The pineapple fruit ripens in about 5 or 6 months after flowering starts, and it weighs between 2 and 4 pounds. Some of the main health benefits of pineapple are on account of bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme that is found in its core. Bromelain is anti-inflammatory, a digestive aid, a muscle relaxant, and a fighter of tumor cells. So there is no need to temper the amount of pineapple you eat today—it’s good for you!
How to Observe
Before enjoying pineapple today, you may first want to learn how to properly cut it. You could get yourself a pineapple corer to make it even easier. Pineapple is so good that you could just stop there and eat it plain, but there are many delicious recipes it is used in that you could try as well. Here are some foods and drinks with pineapple that you could try:
piña colada
pineapple wine
pineapple on pizza
fruit salad
ham with pineapple
pineapple upside-down cake
Did you think that pineapples are only used for eating? Think again. You can also use them to make jack-o-lanterns.
