Clinton

Oxon Hill

Named for a colonial 18th-century manor home overlooking the Potomac River, Oxon Hill had a population of 18,791 at the time of the 2020 census. The original manor house burned down, but a large neo-Georgian-style home was built in its place in 1929 and is owned by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and is used for special events.

Oxon Hill is also the location of the National Harbor development, a large mixed-use community with residential units, hotel rooms, retail space, upscale dining, and entertainment. The MGM National Harbor Resort Casino is located at the entrance of this development.

Oxon Hill’s family fun includes the Oxon Cove Farm educational facility and the Henson Creek hiker-biker trail.

Other attractions in nearby Fort Washington include:

Rosecroft Raceway (“the Raceway by the Beltway”) which offers harness horse racing;

The Henson Creek Golf Course;

The Tucker Road Athletic Complex with swimming and ice skating.

Fort Belvoir is located in Fairfax County, Va., halfway between Washington, D.C., and Richmond, Va., making it ideal for tourists who are interested in history as it is close to national parks, museums, monuments, and more. For those who work at Fort Belvoir but choose to live off base, Burke, Lorton, and Alexandria are popular choices.

The 2020 census lists Lorton as having a population of 19,844. The median home value at that time was $463,767.

The Lorton VRE station is served by the VRE Fredericksburg Line which runs between the city of Fredericksburg to the south and Washington’s Union Station to the north.

The Lorton Amtrack station is the northern terminal for Amtrak’s Auto Train which runs between this station and the Sanford station in Sanford, Florida.

Special attractions include the 218-acre Burke Lake and Lorton’s Workhouse Arts Center (a former prison!) which provides 300 performances, 12 gallery spaces, hundreds of classes, and several large-scale community events. 

Alexandria

According to the 2020 census, Alexandria’s population was 160,146 — the sixth largest city in Virginia. The median home value at that time was $545,000.

Historic Alexandria is perfect for those who appreciate the arts, culture, outdoor activities, and entertainment. 

Nearby George Washington’s Mount Vernon is the most visited historic home in the U.S., but there are also so many other historic sites here, as well as an abundance of restaurants, wineries, breweries, entertainment, and cultural events.

Located between Washington and Baltimore, Fort Meade is located in Anne Arundel County, Md. Surrounding neighborhoods include the communities of Odenton, Laurel, and Columbia.

According to the 2020 census, Odenton’s population was 42,947. The median home value at that time was $337,700. 

Odenton’s school system is ranked above average, and Bowie State University and Anne Arundel Community College are both nearby. Odenton offers natural entertainment in the form of parks. The Patuxent Research Refuge is nearby and offers fishing, wildlife observation, hiking, and biking.

Because Odenton is located just 19 miles from Baltimore and 15 miles from Annapolis, there’s also great proximity to historic sites, diverse dining venues and entertainment, but Odenton also has four main shopping centers as well as an ice rink, golf center, go-kart raceway, athletic club, and more. Laurel

Located in northern Prince George’s County, Laurel’s population was reported as 42,947 in 2020 and the median home value was $337,700.   

The City of Laurel’s Department of Parks and Recreation maintains more than 200 acres of parkland (19 park sites) which includes playgrounds, pavilions, athletic fields, trails, tennis courts, pools, basketball courts, and more. 

A couple of unique highlights located in Laurel include:

The Maryland Jockey Club, known for world-class Thoroughbred horse racing.

Dinosaur Park, a fenced area where visitors can join paleontologists in searching for early Cretaceous (145 to 66 million years ago) fossils.

Columbia

At the time of the 2020 census, Columbia’s population was 104,681. The median home price was $385,900.

Located in Howard County, this planned community opened in 1967 and consists of 10 self-contained villages that were designed to enhance its residents’ quality of life in terms of human values (attempting to eliminate racial, religious and class segregation), rather than economics, and engineering. 

Lakes Kittamaqundi and Centennial offer boating and fishing. The Rocky Gorge Reservoir offers hiking, horseback riding, and fishing.

The public schools are rated highly, and Columbia consistently earns a spot in Money Magazine’s “Best Places to Live in the U.S.” list, ranking first place in 2016.

Day 6

Woke up early and spent the day in Arches national park! We first drove to park ave which had really cool big structures. One of them was called the 3 gossips (which we are re-enacting). It was pretty cool in the morning because there was a lot of cloud cover. Then we went to the visitor center and asked for which hikes were good and had no crowds. They suggested tower arch but it was an hour away so we thought maybe no. But then, sarah called her brother in law who used to be a ranger and he also suggest tower arch so we drove all the way out there - including on a gravel road for half an hour - to the tower arch trail. It really was worth it. Only saw two other groups so we basically had the whole thing to ourselves! On both hikes we had some trouble staying on the trail. We went a whole half mile off the trail on the first one. Thank you all trails for getting us back! And thank you to the rangers who make all the cairns. The whole drive I have continued to compare our surroundings to the cars soda springs raceway rode in Disney land. I found a video of this ride and, while this is obviously better, that ride does a good job!

Ice, Ice Baby! Chilling with the Fish at Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery

Blogger’s note: It may look like a quiet winter wonderland but cold weather doesn’t stop conservation at Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery in Leavenworth, Washington. Julia Pinnix, our visitor services specialist at the facility, takes us behind the scene in this installment of “Fish Tales” which appeared recently in The Wenatchee World. Hatcheries in winter are just as busy as in summer, but in different ways. At Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery (LNFH), the eggs of August have transformed, growing through the alevin stage, when they have yolk sacs on their bellies and can’t swim well, into tiny fry. By the first week of March, 1.2 million of these wee fish will fill 124 tanks in the nursery, and will need to be fed up to seven times a day. It’s chilly in the unheated space, especially with the moving water generating a draft, so I have to wear a coat to spend much time observing.

What’s the worst thing about working at a hatchery in winter? “Monitoring water flows and breaking ice for several nights in a row is the least desirable part about winter conditions, but keeping the water flowing is critical, and most rewarding after a cold snap,” is Craig Thomas’s answer. He is the assistant manager at LNFH. Fish need water the way humans need oxygen. A couple of hours without fresh water pumping into the ponds, and they will die. So a freeze-up of the pipes or ice clogging the intake is a full-on emergency. On January 16 and 20, ice on the Entiat River broke up and clogged the intake system for Entiat National Fish Hatchery. Staff spent hours clearing ice and keeping water flowing to their summer Chinook.

Fish are cold-blooded, so as the water chills, everything slows down: metabolism, heart rate, movement. “We feed them about once a week right now, whenever the ice opens up,” says Biological Science Technician Darren Hemmer from LNFH. Sara Reese, assistant manager at Winthrop National Fish Hatchery (WNFH), reported, “Cold temperatures during the middle of January brought river temperatures to 32 F...brr! There was no fish feeding for about a week and a half during this, as the raceways were 37 F (this is due to a combination of river and ground water).” Craig noted, “We generally don't feed when the water is below 36 degrees. Even then it is a reduced ration. The fish have a difficult time processing the food during cold temps, nor do they require much food.”

While fish in the outside ponds are at the mercy of the weather, younger fish in the nurseries are deliberately cooled to slow down their growth. This allows hatcheries to manage when young fry are moved outside, for instance. At LNFH, spring Chinook salmon smolt are released in April, and the raceways thoroughly cleaned before bringing fry outside. The well water used inside the nursery is relatively warm (46 degrees F), and if not chilled, would mean the fry are ready to go outside before there is room available.

At WNFH, steelhead kelts are overwintered in circular tanks in a special building. Kelts are steelhead that have survived spawning, something other salmon cannot do. These fish are being nurtured for re-release, fed a diet of krill and surrounded by netting to mute light and screen the activities of the humans that tend them. This project is run by Yakama Nation Fisheries, who are also at work at LNFH prepping ponds for coho fingerlings to arrive in March, delivered from the Columbia Gorge by truck.

Screens used outside to prevent predators from eating hatchery fish are compromised by snow and ice. Sara said, “Staff are busy with snow removal when storms come through, and building some new pond cover structures.” At LNFH, the raceways that are not roofed are covered with fencing on hinges, which can be raised for feeding or cleaning, and lowered to protect the fish. During heavy snowfall, they must be left raised so they don’t collapse under the additional weight, leaving the fish vulnerable to predators. Craig listed as problems, “Ducks (mallards seem to be the most common), crows, ravens, kingfisher, otter, mink, great blue heron, osprey… Just about everything that can get into the raceways.”

Although most visitors come to our hatcheries in summer, a winter visit still offers plenty to see. Each of our three locations (Winthrop, Entiat, and Leavenworth) offers trail access for snowshoeing and views of adjacent rivers. As the days lengthen, I look forward to spring releases of salmon smolt along with the arrival of migrating birds and emerging wildflowers. On the increasingly warm, sunny days of this season, it doesn’t seem long to wait.
