as an actual French person, let me tell you that Kit did a really good job with his lines in French? Obviously he still had an accent but it was FAR from the worst I've heard, and he was completely understandable (which is NOT a given even when actors try their best) and sounded quite natural? Honestly he sounded like someone who's been practicing their French for a lot longer than he actually has, so while he didn't sound like a native speaker I am SO PROUD of him because we all know he had a long way to go from "oui"

Hi! Can I ask you a question about France? How common or uncommon or weird is the use of coucou as a greeting? Especially between adults. Would it be super weird if I went to France and greeted someone like that?
I don't trust the click-baity articles that show up when I google this (I'm not even sure all of them were written by humans), so I'd rather ask someone that, you know, actually lives over there.
Thanks, have a nice day
Hi! Coucou is a pretty common greeting including between adults (though it's more often used by women as it does sound a bit cutesy), but I think it implies pre-established friendly relations, unlike the neutral Bonjour or Salut. I only use it with family and friends. Friendly acquaintances too—okay now that I think about it, it's hard to say where I draw the coucou line. I use it as a greeting when I enter the library if there's no one in there but the librarian because I know her well, but if there are other people in the room I say bonjour even if they're children. And of course if I knew the librarian very well but didn't like her she wouldn't get a coucou. You kind of have to follow your heart with this greeting.
But definitely don't use it to greet people in a shop or formal context or anyone you don't know well because that would be weird (in my view!) Coucou sounds affectionate, I often use it in writing to set the tone ("Hi I am an informal unthreatening email !") (also if a French person sends you a text that starts with Cc, that's textspeak for coucou)
To me "Salut !" is "Hi!" while "Coucou" is Hi :) <3

oh good news for those of us who only saw the english version of the french union call for testimony, or who don't speak french:
when in english they said quackity "half-heartedly" acknowledged things, in the french version the word they used was "demi-mot". having consulted a few dictionaries i THINK it's not a direct translation or at least not a wholly accurate one. from what i'm seeing, "reconnaître à demi-mot" roughly means "to admit indirectly". translation of "demi-mot" directly seems to be something like "implicitly" or "without spelling things out".
i've linked the sources where i found the translations for any english speakers who want to double check and please, any native french speaker who disagrees PLEASE tell me if you have a different translation than was provided, or have insight on the connotation!!
"half-heartedly" implies a lack of personal or emotional investment which i think got a lot of us on the defensive (certainly raised my eyebrow) but i think that's just an imperfect translation. from what i'm seeing, 'demi-mot' doesn't have those same connotations.
(incidentally, putting 'reconnaître à demi-mot' into google translate does produce 'to acknowledge half-heartedly'; no shade, to be clear, considering they're a FRENCH union i wouldn't blame them if they had to use online translation tools, and 'demi-mot' is hard to translate, at least for me)
both english and french versions of the call are linked in this post
ADDITION FROM THE REPLIES:
@selemina : "French speaker here, you are very right! In this context, it could mean "he recognized, without saying so explicitly [...]". Or it is a notion of not enough being said on a subject. There is a layer of secrecy to something said 'à demi-mot', which often implies dishonesty. Applied to this context, I think the union is suspicious of Quackity's latest declaration (probably from seeing many dishonest people in charge before) but still reporting the facts." (THANK YOU!!)

translations of two of etoiles' books from today :]
first report to the resistance before the mission began:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I found myself in a labaratory where I was able to infiltrate with a perfect discretion of 9/10 on the Solid Snake scale, then I saw a chest with a TRIVIAL flag enigma which allowed me to understand that I have to retrieve 4 pieces of paper disseminated in a kind of temple. The coordinates were 16473 176 166801."
debrief to the resistance after the mission:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I succeeded in freeing the code but discretion was not really possible. I killed 6 guards (they weren't eggs) but I wanted to save them, I even tried to discuss with them.
When I freed the code, it tried to follow me then it exploded and transformed into black concrete, I sent you the photos. My theory was that the federation wanted to clone the codes with the mimics who were in the room next door to spread the black concrete epidemic (they are not cool).
Voila, that's all for me kisses, for payment for the mission it's going to be 3 pendorite blocks thank you :D"

sometimes I wish that the non native english speaking cc's would just say fuck it and heavily rely on the translator like let them express how they feel in their most natural form without having/feel like they have to accommodate english speakers the Translator is a beautiful thing that I wish they utilized a lot more (because that's also how they can further improve it)

would akechi speak multiple languages? cause at this point its basically canon that he soaks up information like a sponge. would he go all out and get dictionaries and textbooks and pronunciation guides or would he be able to learn just from watching shows in the target language?
im asking bc i wanna know if he would memorize every single verb tense in french. 99% of them are unnecessary, useless, needlessly specific, and so similar to like five others. but would akechi be able to use them properly.

Francis made an emergency trip back home.
Bonnefoy residence, c. 2013
transcript:
F: I just can’t believe this. Can you three not handle an ounce of fucking responsibility?! All I fucking do is break my back to provide for the three of you! And you repay me by bringing drugs, boys and GUNS under my roof?! And YOU! Vladimir Percy Bonnefoy! God, I’ve never been more disappointed in my life. May the Lord have mercy on your soul if I EVER find another gun in my house!
F: Car keys. Now.
V: What? No. No, please, you can’t take my car.
F: Now!
V: No! I need my car! What the fuck did you expect me to do? You’re never here, I have to protect us! Do you even know what I do while you’re fucking gone? I’m the one making doctor’s appointments and cooking us dinner every night, not you!
F: Not anymore! Keys, espèce de jeune homme insolent et irrespectueux!
V: No, please! Please, anything but my car, ple—
F: NOW!!!
V: *sniffles*
F: Ce sera beaucoup plus facile pour toi si tu fais ce que je demande!
F: Putain de dégagez de ma vue, vous trois!
-
F: *huffs* Putain de merde.

oh also also, baghera getting increasingly french at the end of the timer was so fucking funny and i love her so much, like when her and phil fought and phil killed her and her accent thickened until she abandoned words and made french noises CHEF'S KISS reminds me of when she played outlast w cellbit slime and jaiden and got progressively more french as the night wore on, genuinely had a blast hearing her progressively dropping more and more swears in french
also reminds me of something i THINK i remember, think it was her who said during brazil she kept accidentally speaking french to people because of how close she felt to them

wanted to try some french practice so here's a translation for day 1 of pomme's diary!! im mostly posting this cause i think some of what she wrote is interesting for us Lorepilled Theoryheads... so here!
"Once again I woke up in this strange place. I am alone. I am hungry. I am cold and scared. The dust makes me sneeze and I believe that I would not have survived another day.
Fortunately, some nice people found me! Among them, there are 5 french people: Baghera Jones, Etoiles, Aypierre, Antoine Daniel and Kameto. I don't really know why, but I am capable of understanding and speaking the same language as them. It would seem that I am also capable of speaking English. I met people speaking other languages, I would love to learn them so I can communicate with them!
They fed me and constructed a shelter, I am so happy to not be locked up there anymore."
EDIT: thank you so much to all the francophones who gave me feedback, you're all so very kind :'] now that i know for sure i interpreted it correctly, id like to draw attention to how pomme says "once again" she woke up in the rundown adoption center... had she been in there for a long time already? had she woken up in strange places without any memory before? plus, the fact that she acknowledges she doesn't know why she can speak french and english...

i do believe that gaeilge briste is níos fear ná béarla cliste but i also think that it's nice to have respect for the language and how it works. no rule is set in stone and language is elastic, it should serve those who use it to communicate. but the rules function to some extent in order to facilitate communication. we need that grammar framework to understand each other. otherwise it's just words being thrown at the wall. that is to say, if you break rules or make mistakes, that's fine but the way you break rules should be intuitive to the logic of the language. if possible.
