Natalie Diaz was born in 1978 in Needles, California. Diaz's poetry deals with her own experience growing up on an Indian reservation and the issues facing Native Americans. Her debut poetry collection, When My Brother Was an Azetc, was published in 2012 and won the American Book Award. Trying to understand the modern NDN

I show up to a party that's ahead of me by 3 days. It smells like piss and spilled coolers. There's 6 NDN's in there when I show up. The only source illuminating the space is the light above the oven. All the curtains closed as if trying to hide the shame of what is going on, the speaker so loud its drowning out the thoughts of how life is going for your people. Out of the 6, 4 are passed out. 2 are somewhat coherent- one keeps looking around with a 1000 yard stare, in the deepest part of the eyes you can see the spirit that can't make sense of what's going on. The other is babbling nonsense to the air "no you're crazy... hahaha.... they said they would be back, they said.". I grab the quarter bottle, probably belonged to one of those passed out. I take my first drink of a 4 dayer, because misery loves company.

How does a native cope with active colonialism? You get caught between wanting to fight like hell for what's right, or giving up entirely. Most choose the latter- getting into blind addiction, not wanting to think, not wanting to feel. Mistaking it for warmth and comfort from a harsh, arrogant, ignorant world. When in reality it just makes you numb. Easiest way to cope instead of fighting. I don't discriminate for those fighting addiction, I may not understand exactly what they are going through, but hey- me too. A moment of bliss or blacking out for 3 days feels better than being hurt or angry at the world for even a minute. Because in essence we don't want that for the world right? We want to love. We want to change things. We know what's best. That fight is in us, but that hope can be far from reach. Sometimes when we can't fight the system built to destroy us, we tear down our own brothers and sisters. Mocking them for being able to handle colonialism and actively stepping up, bettering themselves as individuals. It's like we look at their success as our failure. We don't look at it as building capacity within ourselves. Just another fucking way to show colonization is winning.

(Written 2020, crossed out 2023) I remember driving in my hometown, Bella Coola Valley. For work I went up Valley, to Stuix (Stuie on Canadian maps). On the drive I was talking to my fellow cousins (no relation). "Fucking white people" was repeated while driving by occupied houses sitting on unused farmland. The open fields dwarfed the 3 story houses that would put the local band office to shame. "Just sickens me, 2 of these properties are bigger than one of our reserves". "Welcome to tweedsmuir lodge" stands at the entrance of my ancestral inheritance. Some of these families up valley have been here for generations. Like for sure they oppressed mine kind of thing. Sure no one is at fault today. But they get to enjoy the spoils of what has happened? Fucking pricks. At the most there are 4 families living in one household on my reserve while there are fields of unused land. What are they doing to alleviate the injustices of past mistakes? Maybe once they do that I'll stop saying "fucking white people". Until then I have a right to my anger, my hatred, my hurt.

(2023) No. There is a better way to move forward than complete hatred- A reasonable amount of anger is a given. Healing takes both sides, and creator knows we are trying to show up. Against all odds, we are trying ❤️

Artificial limbs are needed for a variety of reasons where a body part is either missing from the body or a body part is too damaged to be repaired. It was built for them by an engineer, an inventor, & mechanic. It was installed on their body through a team of highly trained surgeons and doctors. Having artificial prosthetic limbs comes with a number of complications. Some of which are minor inconveniences while others can be dangerous if ignored. Due to the constant risk of damage and mechanical failures the mechanical prosthetics require daily maintenance and repair. It is maintained and repaired regularly by a team of mechanics and surgeons. The automotive armored prosthetic bionic prosthetic arm is highly upgradable and highly customizable. The prosthetic is linked directly to the nervous system taking electrical pulses from nerves to regulate the many electrical motors and actuators inside the prosthetic bionic arm. It can be moved at will like a natural appendage. This augment functions as if it were the normal body part. These constructs are designed to replace lost limbs if magical healing is not available or if the user desires to have an improved replacement. It has a jetpack on the back of the armor and the armor’s power armor boots for hovering or flight. It has room for storage of extra supplies of food and water. It has an oxygen tank to breathe in space or underwater. It is powered by gas, electricity, steam, or nuclear power. It has a built-in battery that can be recharged. It has plating on the face, neck, chest, back, arms, & legs. 

He/she/they wore charcoal and ruby military class heavy assault Iuyamian combat armor and power armor that were both made out of alien metal materials stronger than Wakandan vibranium the metal that made up the suit of the Black Panther (T’challa), adamantium the metal that made the metal claws of Wolverine (James Howlett Logan) and Sabertooth (Victor Creed), & nth metal. The Iuyamian armor tempered with celestial steel and stellar titanium had a gorget (that protects the chest), a bevor (protecting the lower face, neck, chin, & throat) a breastplate or chestplate (that protects the chest), backplate, pauldrons (that protect the shoulders), plackart (that protected the lower half of the torso), cuirass (that protected the front of the torso), culet (that protects the small of back and the buttocks), couters (that protects the elbows), poleyns (that protected the knees), faulds (to protect the waist and hips), gauntlets (that protect the forearms to the hands), gardbraces (to protect the armpits), vambraces (that protect the elbow to the forearm), sabatons (that protect the feet), cuisses (to protect the thighs), tassat (that protect the groin, upper thighs, & pelvis), & greaves (that covered from the shin to the knee). The power armor helmet was designed with a sharper temple, with a metallic shine, a full curved ridge, a definite brow, a prominent muzzle, & a solitary dark cambion glowing visor with two eye holes. The power armor helmet was also designed with a dark umber and dark scarlet color, a faintly more skeletal look, & it had distinct cheeks. The power armor helmet had claw marks going above its left eye to the bottom of its left cheek. The claw marks were from a female were-human who is someone who is powerful as King Shark, Wolverine, Beast, Sabertooth, Juggernaut, Orca, Killer Croc, The Shark, Gorilla Grodd, Copperhead, Monsieur Mallah, Manbat, Bane, & Cheetah combined. This dangerous were-human was armed with gauntlets with serrated diamond tipped metal claws made of a metal stronger than nth metal coated in element x. Cardinal Changeling barely defeated her in their Hybrid/Chimera or Beast/Feral/Primal form. Instead of repairing it, Scarlet Shapeshifer kept the claw marks as proof of their battle out of respect. The power armor helmet was designed with numerous Iuyamian marks on the face, the power armor helmet had lines of Iuyamian characters on both cheeks and temple, the power armor helmet was decorated with countless Iuyamian symbols, the power armor helmet had unique Iuyamian writing on both brows and the muzzle, the power armor helmet had organic cybernetic and natural bionic elements (these organic cybernetic and natural bionic elements were on its temple, on its snout, & and on both cheeks), the power armor helmet had two shining cardinal lines going down the two right and left eye holes of his/her/their dark fire brick glowing visor, & finally the power armor helmet had bizarre sophisticated patterns around the jaw area making it distantly look like a face. All of this gave his/her/their power armor helmet a menacing and remarkable look that motivated allies and petrified enemies. Fastened to the helmet was the skull of a humanoid alien they hunted as hunting captain and clan hunter/huntress of their tribe and clan. After the humanoids, animals, beasts, & creatures were killed they took their corpses. Their bodies were burned leaving only their bones to be gathered to steal their mana or power. Mana is a life force which gives influence, power, and authority. Mana can be gained or lost. It is stored in the bones. After someone’s death, small bones would be turned into jewelry.

This isn't about Strawberry jam

I want to ramble on about something I am not so sure about what it is, so I will tell yall a story.

So imagine this; You are 20 years old, you live with your partner in your shared apartment, your partner buys a tiny glass jar of strawberry jam. 

If I pointed at that moment and asked you what it was, I think you would say “Well, it's a jar of strawberry jam” 

Okay now, imagine one week later; the jam was good, but the jar was tiny so you and your partner already ate all of it, holding the empty and dirty jar you realize, wow it has a very nice shape, maybe I can use it as a cup, so you clean the jar and lets it sitting beside your water filter. 

If I pointed now and asked what it was, what would you say? “It’s an empty jar of strawberry jam that we use to drink water.”

Okay cool, nice and practical, lets go forward, Imagine 10 years later… Yea I know a lot of time, but hear me out; You are 30 years old and you had a child in the meantime, this child is 7 years old. 

If I pointed to the empty jar of strawberry jam and asked what it is, you know what they would say? “It’s a glass cup, we use it to drink water.” Do you see where I am going?

Okay now let's go 30 years in the future, imagine; you are 60 years old and this story isn’t about you anymore, no this story is about your grandchild now. Your 37 years old child has a 10 year old child themselves now. If I pointed to the glass cup and asked the same old question, what would they say? “Oh that's a vintage glass cup that belonged to my grandparents, my parents get it out on… special occasions.” Okay cool, it's a vintage heirloom now I guess.

Okay now Imagine; Someone broke it, what would be said if I pointed to the glass and asked you to say what it is?

“This was an empty jar of Jam, we bought it a bunch of years ago and I don’t remember if the Jam was good or not, but it served us well.”

Ok, and If I asked your child?

“Oh, this was an old glass cup that was in my parents house. I liked to use it when we would drink vodka… I think it was older than me. It's a shame it is broken.”

Your grandchild?

“This was a family heirloom. It was older than my parents and I pretended to give it to my child one day. To be honest, the thing was old, it is a miracle how long it lasted.”

The garbage man that will dispose of it.

“Someone threw broken glass in the wrong bin, I will have to put on my gloves.”

SUMMARY: On a visit to your boyfriend, you end up having to deal with a creep on base, but Soap and Ghost's methods of resolving your problem are... far more drastic than yours.

PAIRING: Soap x f!Reader (and BFF!Ghost)

A/N: Was thinking about how high the risks of sexual assault are in the military for women + about how much the Task Force could get away with (Soap's mohawk is NOT standard issue lol), but it turned out kinda dark. Not my usual kind of content. This is my first time writting those characters, pls be indulgent.

Your elbow connects with the man’s nose with a satisfying crack.

Immediately he howls, pressing his broken nose with one hand, blood dripping between his fingers.

“FUCK! What the fuck! You broke my nose, you crazy bitch!”

This. This is why you didn’t want to meet the Task Force on base. There was always one brainless fucker who didn’t get the memo that, no, despite having breasts, you weren’t here as a comfort woman.

The private is glaring at you with a hatred as deep as it is sudden, one that screams murder.

The only good side of the situation is, with how loud he’s being, you won’t even need to call for help. Already most of the soldiers nearby are staring at you, muttering among themselves. Not that you can’t beat this guy up on your own, but the military tends to frown upon civilians roughing up their members, you learned it at your expense quite early. On the other hand, soldiers settling accounts between each other was… well, not exactly authorized, but it was way less trouble for you.

He grabs you by the collar, his rage only exacerbated by your composure. The action stains your clothing with his blood. You mentally grimace. You’re no stranger to blood, but the idea of this repulsive individual’s bodily fluids being anywhere on your person is disgusting. 

“Are you listening, you dumb bitch!? I’m gonna fucking kill-”

The venom-filled verbal onslaught stops dead as a hand takes hold of your assailant’s wrist.

“Now, now, at ease, soldier. Ya making a spectacle of yourself.”

The thickly accented voice of your boyfriend sends a wave of warmth in your chest. 

Your harasser hesitates a second too long, so Soap makes the decision for him, tightening his grasp until the soldier winces, and finally takes the hint, letting you go and taking a few steps backward. Johnny immediately positions himself between the two of you, shielding you.

He’s been smiling the whole time, but it’s the kind of dangerous smile you wear when you’re about to give an asshole a righteous beating.

The private looks partially sheepish, but not defeated, indignation burning in his eyes. He lets loose a torrent of justifications and excuses, actively painting you as the villain, not caring if he contradicts himself in the process. You don’t pay attention to the details of his speech. It’s always the same “she was asking for it” kind of diatribe. The fact that he sincerely believes that there’s a chance that Soap will take his side instead of yours is laughable, but not surprising. 

You wonder how long this will go on, until the private notices something next to you, and all blood seems to desert his face as his voice deserts his vocal cords. 

You turn your head and, to no surprise to you, Ghost is there. He stands so close to you that your arms are almost touching. Clothed entirely in black, which brings out the white skull on his mask, his presence is as menacing as ever; all he needs to do is scowl at lesser soldiers to make them cower in fear. He doesn’t look back at you, but his support for you is so obvious through the rest of his behavior that he doesn’t need to.

Soap takes advantage of the newfound silence to turn to you.

“Ya good, yeah?” He asks, cradling your cheek tenderly, and stroking your cheekbone with his thumb. 

The question is futile - if you were hurt, he would have noticed right away. But it’s still cute to see.

“Yeah. Not a scratch.” you smile.

“That’s my girl”, he smiles back. “So, what the bloody hell happened here?”

You glance at the private behind him. He’s shaking, and the look he sends you back is begging for mercy. Remembering the first words he addressed to you earlier, you realize you’re all out of mercy for today. Thus, with a sadistic little smile, you recount the events.

“This man came to me complaining that I was unfairly privileging Sergeant Mctavish and that he wanted his turn. Then when I explained that I wasn’t some kind of free-for-all buffet, he took it the wrong way and put his hands on me. That’s when I exploded his nose.”

By the time you finish your explanation, Soap’s expression has darkened considerably.

“I see.” is all that leaves his mouth. Anyone familiar with him would know that for him to start talking by monosyllables like Ghost, something must be very wrong.

Pivoting again, he faces the private and, as the latter opens his mouth to plead for forgiveness, punches him right in the face. Blood gushes, drops of it landing on his face. You mentally count until three, one for every blow, and when Soap still doesn’t stop punching, you frown, disturbed and worried by his conduct. He’s never been one to remain impassive in the face of injustice, easily riled-up even in critical situations and despite his superiors’ orders, but you’ve never seen him go this far. 

You’re about to intervene when Ghost beats you to it, putting a hand on his sergeant’s shoulder. That’s right. Ghost, the voice of reason, the paragon of self-control, their cold-hearted leader, will fix everything.

However when you hear the next words that leave his mouth, it’s like the world tilted on its axis.

“Not out in the open, Johnny.”

The words are whispered low enough that only Soap and you would have heard. They send a cold shiver down your spine. Rattled and unsettled in a way that they never made you feel before, you contemplate the situation in silent incredulity.

“Aye, L.T.”, replies Soap with an abnormally monotonous tone.

Before you can ask what the fuck is happening, he proceeds to punch the soldier so hard in the stomach that the latter collapses without a sound, except for the muffled noise of someone winded. The scene makes you increasingly uncomfortable. You feel like Bluebeard's newest wife, having stumbled upon the one room you were forbidden from entering, having witnessed something you weren't supposed to see, and now you can never go back to how things were before.

You counted on Soap and Ghost’s intervention, sure, but you expected them to put an end to the fight, maybe intimidate the guy a little, and ultimately end things here. You didn’t expect… whatever this is.

Staring in shock at the two Special Forces, you shake your head to get a grip and come closer.

“Alright guys, I think he’s had enough-”

Ghost interrupts you with a hand on your shoulder. The Ghost touching two people in less than five minutes? Yes, something’s seriously wrong. Looking at him, you try to convey urgency with your gaze…

“Simon, this isn’t-” 

…but his next words make you lose hope of winning this argument.

A lot of the stuff I've posted so far is pretty white western-centric views of telling stories. The whole article is very informative! An excerpt: "Many of the main characters in Plains Indian mythology never end. Not only are they immortal and indestructible—where they may be killed in one story and are right back at it in another—they also age with the listener. Coyote stories for children have childlike morals; for teens Coyote is a much rougher character; and, for elders only, grandpa Coyote is smart, and his stories are deep and filled with complicated plots and plans."

Piasa Bird bringing you shiny objects and relocating his nest by the river so you can see how beautiful it looks during the day or with the stars shining off of it. His smile faltering when he sees the pollution clogging up the river and making it look murky and muddy. It’s the first time you’ve seen him anything but confident and strong.

His reptilian eyes clouded with memory and emotion as he lands back in the nest, sitting on the far edge away from you. You assure him you still think it’s a lovely spot. You like the scenery. He doesn’t really respond for a little while, then asks why humans do this. You don’t have a good answer, so you just take one of his wings, wrapping it around yourself like you would a human partner’s arm.

You both sit in silence until the sun sets, then you point out how beautiful the stars look twinkling off the water. That at least makes him grin, showing off his mouth full of razor sharp teeth.

The truck is from the founders of the NDN Book Club, Kinsale Drake, Navajo, and Pte San Win Little Whiteman, Oglala Lakota. The club truck hit the road April 1-5. In addition to distributing books, the team handed out product donations curated by sponsor Amy Denet Deal from 4KINSHIP, a Navajo brand that uses runway fashion to fund social good projects on Navajo Nation like the Yilta Book Drop.

NDN Book Club is a nonprofit, literary organization run by and for Indigenous peoples that hosts free youth workshops, author talks, uplifts Indigenous literature, supports Indigenous booksellers, and sends out free Native books. They are supported by Native actress Amber Midthunder (“Prey”) and model activist Quannah Chasinghorse.

In 2023, they distributed more than 2,000 free books by Indigenous authors to Native youth across Turtle Island, supplied by diverse Indigenous booksellers, publishers and authors. From Muckleshoot in Washington to Piscataway lands in the Northeast, they lead workshops in classrooms, tribal libraries, tribal colleges, book festivals and museums.
