"He was undoubtedly one of the handsomest men I had ever seen — the dark blue eyes opening out into lashes of shining jet were arresting and unforgettable."
there's a lot of talk out there on the blogosphere about people misreading/misinterpreting the great gatsby as an endorsement of gatsby's mindset and lifestyle, but imo the person who misread the book the WORST was none other than one nick carraway. dude met a living metaphor and took him completely at face value 😔
had an assignment based on Gatsby where we have to pick a quote we feel has the most emotional weight and make a drawing or collage to reflect it and sadly it is now the most gorgeous piece of art I’ve made in 10,000 years. shoutout to them 1920s queers❓❓
Was reading up on the homoeroticism between Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby and remembered several things. First off, that Nick was implied to have had sex with a feminine man at an orgy. Second, that Jordan Baker is described as a masculine and free spirited kind of woman, one who pursues sports and competition, the way women were not typically allowed to do.
And third, that Fitzgerald originally had a passage about Nick being "amorously pursued" by a former male acquaintance, but deleted it.
So.
Nick was very gay/bisexual.
And then I went further into that rabbit hole and found out that Fitzgerald's wife thought he was gay and claimed he had an affair with Ernest Hemingway. And also that he flirted with men and described himself as "half feminine."
Which was wild to find out, btw. They didn't teach me that in ap lit.
so the thing about what might happen if jay got to read tgg (the book as if nick wrote it) is that there’s 6 billion ways for it to go and they’re all fucking funny. these are examples of things i think jay would say to nick, especially if natsby happened
1. “You call me gorgeous three times in this book.”
2. “Do I really say old sport that much?”
3. “Nick. I would say you complimented me more than once.”
4. “Were you—Nick, were you trying to say ‘I love you’?”
5. “What happened between you and Mckee?”
6. “I think you judge people a lot more than you think you do.”
7. “Why are you talking about your cousin’s husband like this?”
Do you guys think that if Nick, Gatsby, Tom, Daisy, Jordan, Myrtle, and the others were put into a high school setting, all the girls would start noticing that Nick and Gatsby are a bit too close?
