FROZEN 3 and FROZEN 4 are both in development, and I can't wait!
The news sounded odd to me initially, I didn't expect anything like this from Disney Animation, but it became immediatly appealing the moment I realized the GREAT potential a double feature could have for the franchise, most importantly when Bob Iger specified “Jenn Lee, who created Frozen, the original Frozen, and Frozen 2 is hard at work with her team at Disney Animation on not one but actually two stories.”, which would mean:
More time to enstablish new elements, new characters, time to explore new lore and new places without the risk to rush everything;
Tumblr media
A bigger story that can help flesh out our protagonists in their new roles, their new wants and changes they might face, considering how the F2 ending brought many new possibilities;
Tumblr media
A narrative context where the new crysis (whatever it might be) could be explored even better, also allowing to maintain things in a complex prespective just as the Frozen movies like to do, where the matter of "good and evil" not at the center, and things are first of all deeply personal for the characters
Tumblr media
It seems to me that Jennifer Lee always wanted to delve deeper into things, this is why the Broadway Musical was a perfect opportunity for her and the Lopez to expand the characters and flesh out things in the story, also adding new elements that would've been useful for F2.
And when they worked on Frozen 2, they built it as the "second part" of the story, reconnecting almost all the aspects of the sequel to the 1st movie, and the story was clearly meant to be BIGGER and longer compared to what we ended up having because of numerous issues and rewrites. J. Lee and C. Buck didn't want to introduce something that would feel just as "a new adventure", and more about the actual characters evolving, see what they left unresolved, breaking the "Happy ending" scenario of F1, which also led them to NOT give the new human characters (Mattias and the Northuldra) the same relevance given to Spirits of Nature, in order to remain focused on Elsa, Anna and the rest of the gang.
Tumblr media
Now, Lee will most likely not direct or write these two new movies, but she is still directly involved, because it's both part of her job as CCO of Walt Disney Animation Studio and because Frozen is her (and Chris Buck) baby. It will be curious to discover with what idea Marc Smith came out with, but the fact he worked on the 1st Frozen as a storyboard artist and the became Director of Story for Frozen 2 says a lot about him and why Lee trusts him so much, and I'm sure they will follow the approach used with the 2nd movie and carry it on with 3 and 4. Numerous sagas used the two-parter approach, like the books adaptations of Harry Potter, Twilight and Hunger Games series, or more "original cases" like Pirates of the Carribeans or what we are getting now with the animated Spiderverse movies (Across and Beyond). But I think the best similarity (and probably what led to this ambitious choice) is with Avengers Infinity War/Endgame, where the BIG FINALE gets developed in two movies.

It’s exhausting to see anti-ending fans go after Honeymaren for telling Elsa she belongs in the forest. Elsa was already in the mindset to stay, Honey telling her that wouldn’t have made any difference. Her saying that is meant to represent that the two women are starting to form a relationship. It’s good for Elsa to create bonds outside her family.
Also, it’s becoming annoying to see anti-ending fans use Anna as a way to represent their own frustrations. Anna is fine with Elsa being in the woods, and even encourages Elsa to stay in her letters. On top of this, as a loving sister, Anna would have no issues with Elsa forming relationships with people outside of her.

One disappointment I really don't want to have with "Frozen 3" and "Frozen 4": so long after "Frozen 2" the Northuldras are ignored again.
Tumblr media
To this day, the only one they are developing remains a mobile game, "Disney Magic Kingdoms". Even the "Frozen Podcast", which has a large part of its plot taking place in the Enchanted Forest, ignores them and only remembers the tribe in a mention by Kristoff. And in the anthology the story related to them is something from the past that only serves to give Agduna more justification.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honeymaren and Ryder have so much potential, their connections with Elsa and Kristoff, and I'm not talking about romance although if we consider the mobile game, it's canon to say that the woman is in love with the Snow Queen and her brother supports the shipp after realizing that Elsa wasn't interest in him. And Yelana, although she is by far the least prominent character of the trio, she met Iduna, are they going to continue ignoring that?
If the franchise really needs support from the Sámi tribe to make content with the Northuldra tribe, I hope Disney will be kind to them.
I want "Frozen 3" and "Frozen 4" to explore new characters and new themes, but it doesn't need to ignore its past (it could even bring the idiot prince back to be beaten by someone else, I don't care) and especially the past that It hasn't even been addressed yet.

How it all started…
Just a few scenes in Frozen II with the Northuldra Honeymaren and a new ship was born.
Tumblr media
First appearance of Honeymaren and her people, nobody knows yet that they call themselves Northuldra, the people of the sun.
Tumblr media
Honeymaren (with her brother Ryder in the background on the left side) defends her people against intruders...
Tumblr media
...and Anna had sworn to defend Elsa on all costs.
Tumblr media
They attack but Elsa uses her ice magic as defense, to their...
Tumblr media
...big surprise!
Tumblr media
They are afraid of Elsa's magic and Ryder is scared of Olaf's appearance. But then...
Tumblr media
Honeymaren, “Where did you get that scarf? This is from one of our oldest families.“
Tumblr media
But as soon it comes out that Iduna was Elsa's and Anna's mother and therefore they are half Northuldra, the whole situation has changed and they...
Tumblr media
...are welcomed with a big ceremony.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later Honeymaren explains to Elsa the meaning of the fifth symbol on Iduna's scarf and together they sing the lullaby Elsa's mother has sung to her when she was a child. It seems Honeymaren knows a lot about Ahtohallan and the spirits...
Tumblr media
Is this THE moment?

Or this one? Honeymaren, “You know, you belong up here.”

Talking about Ryder and his Importance
As said in my Honeymaren analysis, one of the most important lore and world-building aspects in Frozen 2 was the introduction of the Northuldra – a group of people to which Iduna originally belonged that is loosely inspired by the Sámi of Scandinavia.  They are a racially diverse group in F2 that live within the Enchanted Forest and have a close relationship with the Magical Spirits and Ahtohallan.
Unfortunately, the Northuldra do not get a lot of screen-time in the film, however, the prominent Northuldran characters still managed to stand out and be recognizable even with their small roles - one of these major characters being Ryder Nattura.
Ryder is Honeymaren's younger brother, and much like Honey, has a small, but prominent role within the film. He is described as a playful dreamer, always cracking a joke here and there while dreaming about exploring the world outside of the Enchanted Forest. He plays a larger role in Kristoff's story, the two becoming fast friends due to their shared love of reindeer, and helps him gain the confidence to ask Anna to marry him.
In Tribute
I felt it wouldn't be appropriate to talk about Ryder without mentioning the person he was based on. Chris Buck, the Director of Frozen, Frozen Fever, and Frozen 2, went through a terrible tragedy when he lost his son. The song The Next Right Thing is famous for being a song that represents the grief he and his wife went through. The overall themes of F2 were also inspired by this tragedy.
Jennifer Lee also wanted to give another tribute to Ryder Buck, so Ryder Nattura was named. He was also based off of Ryder's hopeful personality.
“We’ve given him more to do because he’s a very light spirit, he’s a very positive character. He’s actually really fun, really, like I said, kind of hopeful.” - Chris Buck
You can find out more about Ryder Buck's story here.
The Wingman
Ryder plays a fairly big role in Kristoff's story - some may say that all he did was suggest a proposal, but I would say he did a little bit more than that, and actually helped Kristoff in finding his own confidence.
Firstly, he helped Kristoff feel more comfortable with his relationship with Reindeer. It's a very small detail, but it's worth mentioning. Everyone in the series, other than Anna, was very critical of Kristoff's relationship with Sven. The citizens of Arendelle always assume the worst, like in F2 when they question Kristoff and Sven acting out his proposal. Even the Trolls call him out on it.
"Like his peculiar brain dear, his thing with the reindeer, that's a little outside of nature's laws!"
However, when Ryder suddenly comes along and starts making his own Reindeer talk, Kristoff is shocked and happy.
Kirstoff: Wait, you talk for them too?! Ryder: I do. Kristoff: It's like you can actually hear what they're thinking? Ryder: Yeah and you.. you just say it! Kristoff: And then you just say it.
It's such a goofy interaction, and obviously meant to be funny, but it also feels so heartwarming at the same time. Kristoff finally found a friend who gets his peculiar interests. You can honestly hear the relief and happiness in his voice when he says "And then you just say it."
I think this interaction actually helped Kristoff slowly start to become more confident, along with the actual proposal attempt.
The proposal is over the top and full of emotion, in which Kristoff says everything on his mind about Anna even before his final proposal. The two proposals are very similar -
"Princess Anna of Arendelle. My feisty, fearless, ginger-sweet love. Will you marry me?"
"Anna, you are the most extraordinary person I've ever known. I love you with all I am, will you marry me?"
Obviously, the second one is more emotional and, however, you can see that Kristoff was just as confident and loving in the previous attempt - showing how Ryder was able to help Kristoff be more open and honest about his feelings by introducing the Northuldran ceremony.
His overall support of Kristoff, without even knowing him that well, also shows his kindness and willingness to help others, even when he is unsure.
Kristoff: I can't seem to get her attention. Or even say the thing. Ryder: Well, you're in luck, I know nothing about women. But I do know that we have the most amazing way of proposing, If we start now, we'll be ready at dawn.
Ryder was an important aspect of Kristoff's development, and Kristoff would've probably still struggled with his feelings if not for Ryder trying to help. While it did lead to a misunderstanding when the two left to prepare for the proposal, this situation was necessary so that Kristoff could better understand his emotions and become a better partner to Anna.
The Dreamer
While a lot of Ryder's personal development isn't explored, we do get a small glimpse of his dreams - and we get to see them fulfilled.
One of the first things Ryder says is -
"Ryder: Free the forest… Wow… I'm sorry, It's just… ah, Some of us were born in here, we've never even seen the clear sky."
Here, we see how Ryder is hopeful to see the sky. As described by him here and within the Frozen 2 guide, Ryder was born in the Enchanted Forest after the Battle of the Dam, thus he never saw what life outside the forest was like. It also describes how he longs to explore the world.
When he finally gets to see the sky, it is wonderful for him to finally get his wish. You can really feel the happiness and excitement in his words.
Ryder: Look at the sky. I just didn't realize there was so much of it.
Future Potential
Ryder has a huge amount of potential as a character. His kind and supportive nature, as well as his big dreams of exploring the world, give us so many possibilities and situations to explore with this character.
As with all the Northuldran characters, Ryder, like his sister, deserves his time to shine and be explored in more depth. I can only hope that the writers also feel this way, and will give Ryder his time to shine, especially now that the whole world is at his fingertips.

In case anyone wondered, yeah, all the most recognizable Frozen characters are in the final group photo, even Hans that many thought was excluded just because Elsa jokingly froze him in the picture.
So, to all the fellow Hans fans out there: calm yourself, take a deep breath and accept that Hans getting joked about is still a way to take him into account because, at least, the protagonists can express their disdain for him, which is totaly fare.
