I just want to brag on my little ecosystem. I added a small school of harlequin Rasboras to my blackwater aquarium and have been watching them happily hunt mosquito larvae, detritus worms, and copepods. I plan on supplementing with flake food a couple times a week, but hopefully this tank takes care of itself!!

A new study has found that the famous Australian lungfish Methuselah, who first arrived in the U.S. in 1938, could be up to 101 years old.

The world's oldest aquarium fish, a lungfish named Methuselah, may actually be decades older than researchers originally thought and may even be over 100 years old, a new study finds. Methuselah is a female Australian lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri) that resides at Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco, California. She first arrived at the aquarium in 1938 after being sent to the U.S. along with more than 200 other fish from Fiji and Australia.  Aquarium staff have never been sure how old Methuselah is, but until now the best guess was that she is 84 years old, which makes her the oldest known fish in captivity. (In the Bible, Methuselah was a man who reputedly lived to be 969 years old.)...

While looking for references I stumbled upon these funny guys: Ghost Pipefishes, aka False Pipefishes [genus Solenostomus]. They spend most of their time floating facedown, camouflaged, sucking up tiny prey through their snouts. Pretty epic...

I need another project like I need a hole in the head, but I’m starting some homemade pond water. As a teacher, I used to do this so my students could practice using a microscope. These days, the microflora and fauna will populate my new fish tank.

The goal is an aquarium that needs no filter or chemicals. The creatures that spawn in these tubs over the next few months should do all the filtering I need, fingers crossed.

Aquário Natural (Natural Aquarium) is the pristine, crystal-clear source of the Baía Bonita River and a highlight of the Baía Bonita Ecological Reserve. This remote inland region of Brazil is a popular spot for eco-tourism. A tour of the Aquário Natural offers a hike through the jungle followed by snorkelling with over 30 varieties of fish. Other popular activities include swimming in the Silver River, rappelling 72 metres down into the waters of the Anhumas Abyss and walking through the treetops on Circuito Arvorismo (The Trees Circuit), a suspended steel walkway varying in height between 10 to 20 metres.

The underwater scene in today’s image of plants and tetra fish was photographed by Swiss artist Michel Roggo. Since 2010, Roggo has travelled the world in search of the most beautiful freshwater environments. Through his work he has visited 48 locations where he has taken more than 12,000 photographs. His projects emphasise the need to protect unsullied locations and to safeguard the world’s wetlands and freshwater ecosystems.
