Went camping recently amongst the redwoods at Pomo Canyon. Hiked from campsite to beach one day and played the stone game. Excellent weather. Did some dying with blackberry vines in my cast iron Dutch oven. Upped my campfire cooking game (tinfoil!!) and discovered how excellent squeeze mayo is on everything-- but especially the asparagus.

cotton samples dyed with white dead-nettle (lamium album) !! cooler toned fabrics are just dead-nettle, the warmer brownish scraps had been pre-dyed yellow with pomegranate rinds
this was a very small experiment to confirm whether dead-nettles yielded dye as their stinging cousins 🌿 the extraction process lasted two days and 3 steepings (although i believe two steepings would've been enough!)
my partner said these look a bit like bog finds :'^) love that comparison

One of the many things I’m surprised Anet has never released: a ‘Sylvan’ set of themed mount skins like the Inquest Exosuit, Branded, and Shiverpeaks ones, but plant-themed so they can resemble the sylvari, nightmare court, or mordrem depending on what dyes you use.

More handspun linen blanket work. Feels super nice, even though theres lots of, idk what it would be called but bits of undesirable vm that ought to have been threshed out. When im finished ill give it multiple good beatings and thrashings that should soften it up, and then im hoping to dye it with some oregon grapes.
I actually have a whole ton of dyestuff ive been collecting in the freezer that i need to turn into dye, bc im moving very soon and i dont want to be bringing bags of frozen berries and pits and peels with me.
Tumblr media
Also gonna go harvest this in a minute--its a horrifically overgrown patch of oregano, and i read a few days ago that you can get a dark, almost black dye out of the dried stems. And i dont even like oregano as a spice, so... just gonna get the stems.

If you work with felt or wool or any other natural fibres, you may be wondering how you can dye them without introducing chemicals and difficult processes. Well, look no further than SOLAR DYEING!
Process:
- Pretreat fibre (aka mordant) with alum to make the color stick
- Put wet fibres in a sealable glass jar with fresh or dried plant material
- Leave in the sun for 2-3 weeks (depending on how much sun your jars get you can go shorter or longer!)
- Rinse out your fibres
Check out the video to see these plants in action:
- Marigold
- Red Clover
- Golden Rod
- Hibiscus
- Purple Loosestrife
- Curly Dock
- Red Hopi Amaranth
- Stinging Nettle
The results may just surprise you...!

Murder baby quilt. Finished & sent back in June to one of the few that I imagined could appreciate it. On one hand-- naturally dyed fabrics! Soft earth tones! On the other hand-- so many Caucasian skin tones! Fleshy little patches with bits of ‘sinew’ (undyed fabric) and a rich, meaty red backing!
Tumblr media
While I’ve a mountain of dyed fabric from earlier loquat investigations, this quilt is entirely done with a fresh batch of leaves from a friend’s yard (the more friend connections one can incorporate into a project, the better!). Really enjoyed how my misc dyed skirt blended with/matched the top as I worked on it.
It was all fun and games till I tried to wash the damn thing-- worst experience washing a work to date. It bled, it stained, it took two days to dry. Apparently there’s a reason one should confine themselves to cotton for baby quilts....

my first hand-dyed garment ☀️ this was an old white zara skirt that was forgotten in my mum's closet ! pulled the hem up a bit, changed the closure from a zipper to buttons & dyed it bright beautiful yellow with pomegranate rinds :^)
the leftover fabric was turned into ribbons for medieval hair taping (very nice to have matching ribbons!) and some scraps used for overdyeing with other plants at a later time
photos are from the sweet @magpieinavest after a wonderful day in their gran's garden 💛

From fleece to knit.
The base fibre is Scottish Blackface/mystery sheep, mixed with 25% merino to make it less coarse. Spun 2ply, it came out to 114g. It was then mordanted with alum, dyed with elder tree leaves and downspun to remove some of the excess twist.
I tried to knit a glove, but I’m going to pull it out and knit a pair of socks instead.

Winter is a slow season for me. Short days and darkness and sculptural dead garden plants.
However, it is a good time to appreciate the crispness of cold air, the snowflakes, beautiful browns and greens and grays, and the little things that are still alive.
Oyster mushrooms have been a great find down by some dead trees on our property. It really makes me appreciate letting things be, not always having to shape them to their "best." If the dead things weren't left we wouldn't have mushrooms and places for bees to hibernate and seeds for birds to eat. Sometimes people don't want to consider that their ideas of right or beauty could be hurting other living creatures.
...On a lighter note! The beard lichen should be an interesting thing to try natural dyeing with, but alas I do not have the ammonia needed at hand. Will post results when I do though!
Bonus pic of a felted polar bear gift I made 🐻‍❄️
