Wen Xu smiled at him coolly, walking closer. “Indeed I am,” the Wen heir confessed. “The same that laid waste to Cloud Recesses all those years ago.” He crouched down to be level with Meng Yao on the ground, an elbow on one knee, and smiled at him patronizingly. “All the good Clan Leader Nie’s intervention did to stop it. By which of course, I mean, none.” Meng Yao lurched forward threateningly. He did not have to feign the rage in his heart to solidify his attackers’ false deductions. -- Mistaken for Nie Huaisang, Meng Yao is kidnapped by the Wen. Nie Mingjue and Huaisang must justify going after him, though there are many in Qinghe and Qishan who believe Meng Yao is unworthy and replaceable. Nie Mingjue is determined to bring him home – but will Meng Yao be the same when he returns?

“Of course, of course,” Xichen assured. He leaned closer, blushing as Mingjue’s lips twitched into something of a pout. Mingjue only showed this more petulant side of himself to him. “Mingjue-xiong, you livened up Gusu in every possible way while studying at Cloud Recesses. That, I am sure of.”

There is no other choice.

It sloughs from their body, and all the weariness of the world is washed away like the cold waters of a grand, sacred waterfall, down the riverbed, with the ocean’s tide. Xingchen needs only to reach out their hand to grab that curtain to the next realm, whirl it away like a blanket shielding a child from the truth inside their parents’ room.

Fluttering in the wind, he made fun of Qinghe Nie’s gutlessness, accused Clan Leader Nie of turning a blind eye to Vice General Meng Yao’s pain, who admirably maintained ironclad silence as he was tortured beneath the walls of Scorching Sun Palace, more honorable than their most obstinate of prisoners apart from bloodcurdling screams.

Had Nie Mingjue been on the battlement wall at that time, he would have ordered the man killed.

Like a mountain unbattered by the wind, Nie Mingjue stood before Qinghe’s gate. Metallic chinking echoed over and around the battlement walls. Baxia was extended before him, touching the ground. The men were quiet, save for the restlessness of their armor. Once Huaisang and Xichen were visible, the large man strode forward. It was rare that the Red Blade Master visited the front gates, and rarer still that Young Master Nie returned from a trip alone.

Huaisang said nothing as thunderous steps shook the ground. Mingjue sheathed Baxia behind his back, and then stopped before Huaisang, sizing him up.

He clapped Huaisang hard on the shoulder.

“Ow! What was that for?!” Huaisang asked, rubbing himself.

“You ran off without telling me,” Mingjue grumbled. “At least you made it home alive.”

Huaisang’s offended scowl softened at Mingjue’s thinly veiled concern. His brother had had more than one person to worry about while he and Xichen were gone.

In the empty hallway, that man leaned over him.

“What do you do for him? Do you warm his bed?”

Wen Xu's hair slipped onto Meng Yao's shoulders as Meng Yao tightened his fists, Wen Xu’s breath hot in his ear.

Xue Yang’s head hung low. Years ago, when he infiltrated the smaller, enterprising sage’s family and stole a precious artifact, he never guessed it would lead to the game of cat-and-mouse to come. Blood coated his hands – under his nails – as he stood in the center of a sea of dead bodies – the smell of the massacre, and Xiao Xingchen's bleeding face as Song Lan hacked at him mercilessly, cutting through pottery and paper walls – desperate to use the chance Xiao Xingchen had given him, to destroy the murderer before his eyes.

Nie Mingjue did not shower his loved ones with gifts aplenty, but it certainly had not gone unnoticed that his brother owned only the finest wares in the land in terms of comfort and personal hygiene. Personally, Nie Mingjue cared nothing for bodily beautification, and rolled his eyes at his brother’s preoccupation over it. Men in Qinghe had little reason or purpose to fuss over appearances in the cold buffeting mountain winds, sparring with other men of considerable size and strength, their bodies covered in scars and aggressive attitudes to match. Women liked the more rugged types, anyway.

Until Nie Mingjue glimpsed Meng Yao during his morning routine.

Barely awake and still in his nightgown, the small advisor sat before the mirror for hours. He pressed black jade below his eyes, massaged oily scents into his scalp, and sometimes even lightly powdered his face. He picked the debris from his teeth meticulously – with horse bristles dipped in salt, tea, and wine – then pulled his hair up into a glossy topknot. Carefully drawing his braids over his scalp, inserting hairpins at the highest point, he wrapped himself in his fine hanfu layers. After adjusting his appearance in the mirror for a few prolonged moments, he stood, fixed his poise for the day, and strode out of the room.

Whenever Meng Yao faced the bed again, Mingjue pretended to be fast asleep. He gathered – by Meng Yao’s impassive face and quiet discretion – that he did not want to be caught. He would prefer to be thought of as a natural beauty – with the clan leader unaware of the painstaking effort he put in to keep himself looking pristine.

The truth is, Mingjue loved watching him.

“Meng Yao… thank you for saving me that night.”

This was the last thing Meng Yao had expected to hear from the young master. Some petulant whining about the hardship without him in Qinghe, maybe – the crying after exiting the tunnel with Clan Leader Nie, yes – but Nie Huaisang’s gratefulness, his embarrassment?

Meng Yao was dumbfounded, mouth open, wishing he could see his face.

“It was my fault we were out there so late,” Huaisang went on, in a strangely mature tone. “For putting us in danger. I can’t imagine… what you went through in Qishan. Da-ge and I have been worried sick… I’m so glad you’re back safe.”

Huaisang said no more. After a few moments, there was a breathy exhale. The shadow behind the screen wall was mercurial, moving in a way that made Meng Yao realize Nie Huaisang was crying silent tears.

Still, Meng Yao’s vocal chords refused to work.

The cold hiss of metal alerted Xichen to the motion of Huaisang’s hand.

“Young Master Nie, no, you can’t—!” His voice was a violent whisper, lurching forward to stop him. “The guards will see you before you can get within ten paces—!”

“Clan Leader Lan, Wen Chao’s back is turned. This might be our only chance to—!”

Quickly, Xichen shook his head.

The trees were dense. The air was moist, slicking robes that stuck to their skin with mildew and sweat. Huaisang’s body was clammy with a sickness and discomfort begging for release. The Wen who subjugated him and his friends was less than a hundred paces away. At the edge of the Wen camp, Wen Chao’s dignified, unawares, slouched silhouette was enough to make his knuckles whiten on the hilt of his saber. For most of his years, Huaisang had not understood how Mingjue and other soldiers reveled in the frenzy of war. When he had attended saber practice, he was privy to men’s egocentric displays during swordfighting. Oh yes, for an instant, there would be a flash of mad triumph on a man’s face as he readied himself for a downward blow to stagger his opponent backward, overpowered. It never went further than that during practice, but Huaisang had read and heard more than enough tales about the gory fanfare of the Nie. His ancestors were a bloodthirsty lot, killing whomever desecrated the sacred word of Heaven, insulted justice or family ties, sans hesitation. It did not take much to connect flashes of mad triumph with the terror of war. It frightened him.

Never, had Huaisang wanted that glory for himself.

Except, in this moment, he was possessed by the promise of blood at the hilt of his saber.

Socks were torn around his feet, speckled with blood from sharp rocks, prickled plants, and human remains. This, along with the fact Huaisang’s outer robes were missing, his hair down, and tangled, were the first things Nie Mingjue noticed upon his return...

The servants stepped aside for their clan leader to approach his brother. Mingjue leaned, gripping Huaisang on the upper arms, gazing at him in comfort and in question. Unable to hold back anymore, Huaisang burst forward. He hugged Mingjue around his middle, his face buried in his abdomen.

After another moment – despite the others’ presence – Mingjue hugged him back. He glanced at the healers to ascertain whether Huaisang was in need of treatment as his brother heaved and sniffled against him. Standing at attention with lowered eyes, they shook their heads.

“I am glad you are safe,” Mingjue said.
