🍩 for Emmet again
oh yay! thank you anon!
🍩 ~ favorite sweet treat
Emmett doesn't love sweet things. The chocolate bars he shares with Nazanin are one of the exceptions. The other is coffee-flavored ice cream and yogurt.
Jackson Ureña had an insatiable sweet tooth, particularly fond of sweet black coffee, his mothers flan, and bags of Sour Patch Kids.

🍟 and 🍿 for Emmett?
April, thank you! He's been on my mind today, so perfect timing :)
🍟 ~ favorite place to eat out
When he was still Jackson, it was Mazar's Diner in the small town he ended up living in for 6-7 ish years. Cheap, filling, blue plate specials, run by a woman who will happily take his cash no questions asked. I bet he would miss it if he remembered it.
Later, there's a small restaurant near his and Faye's home. It's in a home built in the 1830s, rumored to be haunted, with intimate 2-tops, votive candles, and a rotating menu. They go there regularly on date nights, when they get them. Emmett orders roughly the same thing every time -- whatever they're serving with greens and hominy with a healthy glass of red wine -- but he likes listening Faye read the menu to him. It's peaceful and no one bothers them there.
🍿 ~ favorite snack
He and Nazanin used to share Ritter's Sport chocolate bars -- Nazanin's favorite thing in the world -- but he also develops a fondness for fried wonton strips that came with take out from a specific Chinese restaurant and banana chips. He prefers salty over sweet every single time.

“A walk in the woods might do you some good. Clear your head.” - for Emmett
Thank you, Ash! This felt right for some recovery Emmett :)
~*~*~*~
“A walk in the woods might do you some good,” Nazanin said softly, passing him a full mug of fresh decaf to go with the chocolate bar he was eating far too quickly.
Emmett raised his head. He inhaled the coffee scent, swallowing his last bite. “Would it?”
“I’m no psychologist, but it might.” She sat down across from him, adjusting her headscarf and pulling her cardigan snug across her chest. She shrugged and tapped her temple with her ring finger. “Fresh air. It just rained. Might clear your head.”
“It might...” Emmett settled lower in his seat. He shoved more chocolate into his mouth, trying his best not to look at Oliver’s partner and failing. Nazanin had a pull to her, as if she had her own gravity. No matter how often he tried to avoid her dark eyes, they would simply pull him back. He remembered Oliver saying once that was one of the things he loved first about her, loved the most about her. Emmett didn’t quite comprehend the sentiment, but he understood the pull.
“You think I’m full of shit, don’t you?”
“Not totally... I’m just,” Emmett paused, pursing his lips. The shivering, cold and quaking feeling had not freed itself from his limbs. His mind told him he had never felt so overcome before in his life; a pit forming in his stomach told him that couldn’t be true. Something about it was nastily familiar. “I’m just tired. I didn’t... I don’t like. Being like that. How you just saw me.”
Nazanin stirred sugar into her coffee, snorting a laugh. “A little too much too soon?”
“Something like that.”
“I’d go with you, if you wanted,” Nazanin shrugged. “We can go around the block once or twice. I swear I won’t talk if you don’t want me to.”
Emmett nodded. “I’ll think about it. I kind of want to go back upstairs.”
“Whatever you like, Em. I’m home all day today.”
“D-Don’t--,” Emmett started, then shut himself up. He filled his mouth with dark, sweet coffee to cover it.
Nazanin would not let it slide so easily. “Don’t what?”
It took him a minute, but he managed to loosen his tongue just a bit. Just enough to get the words out. “Call me that. She, um, she used to. I... I hate it.”
“Noted. Just Emmett then,” Nazanin nodded.
“Just like that?” He blinked, confused.
“Just like that.”
“It can’t be that easy.”
Nazanin leaned back and crossed her legs. She suddenly looked tired -- an old, lived-in sort of tired. It stung, his heart clenching at the familiar look. “Trust me. I understand what it’s like to hear the wrong name come out of someone else’s mouth.”

Hey, new reader here <3 I’ve been stealth reading your master post, and I had a question about Nazanin’s name. Nazanin is a Persian name, but Bhangra is Punjabi - I’ve never encountered it as a surname, only as a dance form. So it was a bit jarring for me to encounter the two set together as names: a bit like an English character being named Aisling Bebop. Do you mind giving more insight into how you chose these names?
Hey there, anon! Thanks for popping by and I hope you're enjoying what you're reading so far :)
I pick character names one of several ways, and it usually depends on what I'm writing and how it sounds. A lot of the way I write is governed by how it sounds and I edit by reading things out loud to myself.
If it's historic fiction, I try to use census or SSA documents to pinpoint something more or less period accurate. If its contemporary/modern-ish, I tend to comb through magazine front pages, book acknowledgments, by-lines, etc. to mush something that sounds good (to me) together. And then, occasionally, I let friends create a character for my stories. They give me the sketch and sometimes the details and I move it forward from there -- which is where Naz comes in to this.
So, Nazanin is a character created by a friend of mine based on themselves. She is a trans woman and picked her name after coming out to her then-boyfriend-now-husband, Oliver. My friend picked it because it's very similar to the name they chose for themself, but the last name is entirely my doing.
It occurs to me now, sitting here writing this, that I had close friends in college who did Bhangra style dance and I went to a lot of the concerts. Like, I went all the way back into the bowels of my defunct Facebook page to double check this and there are photos of us backstage and at the after-parties. Tons of photos, like I should have remembered this very large part of my four years at college, and I still keep in touch with those people!!
So, long story short: thank you for asking this question for a number of reasons -- the least of which is sending me on a lovely trip down memory lane this morning. But also, for the intrinsic value a name has when given to a character, any character.
I'm not gonna lie here, anon: I feel really, really stupid for not placing it earlier and feel compelled to do some census dives for a new name. I'm going on a long hike today, so I'm going put together a list and mull each one over during the five miles.
Seriously, thank you for the ask, I very much appreciate it. If you're feeling generous, I wouldn't mind a few pointers in the right direction, but no pressure.
And, if you have any more questions about whatever, my askbox is always open. I'll just be out in the woods, so it may take me a bit to answer :)
<3,
Orchid

Hello, dear! You've been visited by the random character question fairy! :D ~☆
What are the five most influential relationships (lovers, friends, enemies, mentors, etc.) that your character has/had? How have these relationships affected them?
Finally I have the brain power to do these! I've been sitting on these for weeks and I'm going to answer this one for Emmett. Thank you, OC Questions Fairy :)
Emmett's five span not just ones in his current timeline, but relationships he now has no memory of. So, as follows: (1) Oliver Tannatt -- acquaintances/friends, (2) Nazanin Bhangra -- friend/moral support, (3) Faye Murphy -- romantic partner, (4) Aida Lindsay -- previous owner/caretaker, (5) Rhiannon Maddox -- previous owner/enemy.
Nazanin and Oliver are integral to his escape and recovery, being not only voices of reason but also friends and pseudo-family. Rhiannon forces him to adopt his current persona, his methods of self-protection and survival, his habit of shutting himself down. Faye is critical to not only undoing Rhiannon's effects, but also being a new level of support and care for him, helping him navigate new emotions and caring for the family they have together. And, lastly, Aida -- he no longer remembers Miss Aida, but she still has unconscious effects on him, especially in how he greets superstition, beliefs, the strange brand of hopefulness that he has.

10, 15, and 17 for your top three current faves!!
Oh yay!! Thank you so much! I'm going to answer these for Faye, Emmett, and Nazanin :)
10. who is someone they miss?
Faye: her mother; she's still alive, but suffering from dementia and no longer really knows who her daughters -- Katy, Miranda, and Faye -- are anymore.
Emmett: no one he remembers, but occasionally he misses Rhiannon. It's not a pleasant feeling, but one more like a bad case of poison ivy.
Nazanin: her aunties -- they doted on her all through childhood and, now that they no longer speak, she misses their comfort, cooking, and companionship
15. how do they react to being confronted?
Faye: Fight
Emmett: Fawn
Nazanin: Fawn
17. what’s a habit they wish they could drop?
Faye: chipping her nail polish when she's nervous
Emmett: self-isolating; its protective, yes, but to what end?
Nazanin: furiously tearing apart her scripts and stage directions/notes when she's in a creative rut. She just ends up backtracking and it takes more time to unravel what she did in frustration than it did for her to do it.

Hello, dear! You've been visited by the random character question fairy! :D ~☆
What is your character's energy level? Are they more of a hummingbird or a sloth? How does this disposition affect their actions and relationships with others?
hello there! Its so lovely to see you around again :) I'm going to answer this question for my OC Nazanin Bhangra -- someone I don't often talk about!
Nazanin has a variable energy level, and it all depends on how you catch her. If she's working on a new project (she's a director at a small theater), she is insatiable, her focus nearly unbreakable. If she's in between or hasn't been struck by inspiration, she tends to flag, spending her time lounging, reading, or wandering around a grocery store until something like an idea comes to her. So, if it's a sliding scale between hummingbird and sloth, I'd put Nazanin at around a sloth with a little more speed.
It doesn't negatively affect her relationships with anyone in her life, but it does raise some eyebrows with the family she's still in touch with. She has never been in a position to be constantly working, more inclined to steady, consistent work than driving herself crazy with constant, intense, often frenzied work. Not all of her friends and family are able to have time like that, but they don't begrudge her. In fact, her disposition is critical to Emmett's recovery and him coming out of his shell, talking about his trauma, and working out what kind of person he wants to be. Nazanin is a patient, unobtrusive, curious guiding hand for him.
