Hi! I just read your fics and I love them! In the Qin Su!WWX au I believe you mentioned in a few places that WWX can no longer use cold springs bc it would be harmful (ig?) for hin in Qin Su's body?? I feel like I'm missing some lore here... How would it be bad for him? Is it like a gender thing or a cultivation type thing? And how do cultivation types differ based on gender/sex of a person?

In canon, women don't use the cold spring, so I ran with the idea that meditating in cold water is healthful for male cultivators (with excess yang energy), while meditating in hot water is healthful for female cultivators (with excess yin energy).

It's not harmful to go to the opposite gender's bathing area, but doing it too often might hamper one's cultivation. For trans and nonbinary disciples, they choose a bathing area depending on whether they've completed a cultivation-based physical transition. Wei Wuxian doesn't experience gender dysphoria in Qin Su's body, so he either a) goes to Lan Xichen's hot spring, which was originally built for Lan Yi or b) visits the women's hot spring/steaming rooms at a specific time designated for trans/nb folks.

I genuinely, GENUINELY don't understand MDZS/CQL fans who actively hate certain characters and their fans. "JC stans don't interact! JGY fans don't touch!" Like. How can you misunderstand a work you claim to be a fan of so badly? If the story means anything, it means that nobody is perfect. For all the good AND bad that that entails.

Look. For all that the main-MAIN story is a romance with a happy ending? So many of the stories being told are tragedies. And while I'm hesitant to put a Western lens onto Chinese fiction, I'd venture to say they're tragedies in the traditional Shakespearean sense: the tragedy is unavoidable, because the people involved could not have acted other than how they did and still been themselves.

The tragedy of Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng, for example, isn't that JC was cruel or intolerant, and it isn't that WWX was disloyal or irresponsible. It's that they sincerely, in good faith, held to incompatible value systems. WWX: "Protect the innocent, even if it endangers those I've sworn to protect." JC: "Protect those I've sworn to, even if it endangers innocent people." Neither of these mindsets are wrong, and THAT'S the tragedy! There's no villain. There's no easy solution. No matter how much they loved each other, there was no solution that wouldn't have involved one of them betraying everything they held dear; they tried their best to avoid that and it blew up in their faces, but can you blame them?

Or Jin Guangyao: I'm not telling anyone to be a jiggy stan, but if you could watch/read that scene at Lotus Pier and NOT come away with the cynical understanding that, guilty or not, this man was going to be blamed for everything bad that happened in the last decade or so because that's how mob justice works, I don't know what to tell you. (Quick vibe check: without looking, do you think JGY killed Rusong? Because. There's zero canonical proof that he did. Just accusations.)

The beauty of mdzs/cql, to me, is that it's a very human story. As such, it's important to remember that the characters ARE human. Your faves are imperfect and the ones you hate aren't all bad. That's why it's interesting, it's why it's compelling. Even if you personally don't like a particular character, it's not a bad thing if other people do, because that character is a person. With all the good, bad, and ugly that that implies. Hell, I've read fic and meta that's got me sympathizing with Su She and Jin Zixun, ffs. I've read stuff that's had me empathize with fucking Wen Chao. It's not a bad thing that someone can humanize a character you hate. So please, can we stop the fandom fights?

(NB: I still hate Jin Guangshan and probably always will; I'm open to having my mind changed but I'm not optimistic, lol)

Personally, I prefer masc-nonbinary! I'm really fond of the idea that WWX has only a vague sense of his gender, so the idea that he identifies as masc (as opposed to man-aligned) really appeals to me. This lowkey ties in with my own gender HC for him so I may very likely be biased LOL

My favorite t4t wangxian headcanon is that Lan Zhan is a trans man and Wei Ying is nonbinary but he comes out after they get together.

Wei Ying grows a lot when he gets to college, meets and befriends more queer people than he ever has before, and learns a lot more that he didn’t even know there was to learn. Somewhere in here he starts dating Lan Zhan and tries drag and starts asking himself, well, what makes me a boy anyway?

He eventually has a conversation with Lan Zhan that starts, “How did you know you were a boy?” except that instead of being invasive he genuinely wants to know because he thinks that the part of him that is a boy might be...missing. Like, he’s been thinking and searching around inside himself and it’s just not there? He’s just been conforming to how everyone sees him and it’s fine but what if...what if something else would make him happier?

So Wei Ying and Lan Zhan talk it out and experiment together and eventually Wei Ying comes out as nonbinary, mostly agender, but they have fun with gender presentation (it’s like trying on a bunch of different costumes!). They’re constantly experimenting and having fun and that...that brings them joy.

Accidental babies are pretty rare in cultivating families because most women and trans/nb folks who have periods can "freeze" their menstrual cycles to limit fertility, and barrier contraception methods such as condoms do exist, plus talisman spellwork to make them more effective. Most unexpected pregnancies are due to improper use of contraception: Wei Wuxian is new to Qin Su's body and doesn't know the difference between the "herbal teas" she was taking and actual birth control (or the cultivation techniques she used - she didn't think to leave a guide for him, since she and JGY were both celibate after their marriage), while Lan Wangji knows nothing about birth control in general because he always expected to be with WWX in his original body. He didn't retain much information from health class. 😔

This is why A-Yu is Wangxian's only unplanned child! Lan Wangji made sure to take family planning courses after Xiao-Yu was born - seeing Wei Wuxian give birth was Not Fun and he was determined that any future children should be planned and wanted by WWX before they were conceived. 😓

I was going to say he’s a very politically astute and self-interested character in general which comes off as hedonistic selfishness or shallowness when he was younger but actually I remembered how indignant he was about the sources of the corpses in fatal journey. when confronted with that injustice, he did resist being the person to continue it. and you can see how the impact of grief and betrayal caused him to turn to manipulation and malice in the pursuit of personal revenge. and the fact that it was his father is a huge deal too
