She waves him inside, “My sister wants to take some pictures - I know, I’m sorry - and then we can get going, okay?”
“Sure,” Greg nods, but she can tell he’s a little anxious. And when he joins her properly in the hall she sees when his eyes catch on Rio and Beth in the kitchen behind her.
“Hello again!” he smiles with a stiff wave. Rio just nods back, eyeing Greg sternly and then Beth is flapping her arms and finding her camera and ushering them in to the living room so they can take pictures against the wall, next to the pink princess philodendron in the corner that Rio had bought for Beth on valentines.
“It will look chic in the pictures!” Beth enthuses as they are shuffled in to an awkward pose next to its heart-shaped leaves, a mix of dark green and glossy pink.
Annie thought it was ugly and plants belong outside, but Beth loved the damn thing.

I don’t think we’ve paid enough attention to the way Beth says “but I turned you in” in 4x08.
i knooooow! i love how her voice kind of breaks on "in" and her eyes are a little glassy. it really feels like a moment of her taking that step towards taking responsibility for her actions, and there's regret in it, but there's also acknowledgment that she knows exactly what her actions mean in the context of their relationship. it plays well off of her saying earlier in the season that she "may as well have" killed lucy.
i do think the emphasis on her feeling like she didn't have a choice is a combination of her not being able to fully commit to taking absolute responsibility at the same time that it's the truth for her. it reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from clarice lispector: "to think is an act, to feel is a fact." beth legitimately felt like she had no choice, so regardless of the fact that she did technically have one, that truth was irrelevant and meaningless.
but the fact that she said it—where it first seems like an excuse—and then follows it up with "but i turned you in"—really does come across to me as her admitting that if she felt she had had any other choice that she could've made, she would've.

All I want, is a Brio sex scene to this song. I mean when this song really gets going, can you imagine ... ☠️

Two episodes next week including the Rio, Beth, Dean scene! I'm irrationally excited about that scene and I don't think I can be disappointed no matter how it goes. Honestly, it could be basically what was in the promo and I'll be happy! Dean walking in on Beth and Rio casually hanging out in the back of Paper Porcupine, Rio just sitting there watching when Beth approaches Dean.
YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! said beth's husband to her roommate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hard same though, i am a simple woman with simple needs and the promo content exactly as is is enough to have me on the floor. and then followed by whatever tf has rio popping out of the back of beth's van like a snarky jack in the box????????? cannot wait.

a lot of ppl seem frustrated that the show is suddenly introducing Nick as a Big Bad who is in control of Rio or that it seems OOC. But I feel like they may have been building towards something like this for awhile (i think back to the scene in s3 where beth + rio fight at the picnic bench and rio admits that they have to get back to printing because he "has his own debts to pay" and further the bar scene in s4 when beth tells rio boland bubbles is up and running, but he seems genuinely [cont]
distracted/disinterested, and he says something like "it ain't always about you" and "i got other things on my mind"). To me these seem telling moments that show that, while this history/further associations beyond Beth & the girls has been obscure to the audience, there was always bigger players in the game. i feel like rio only lets his relationships blend together when he can't avoid it or when absolutely necessary. what do u think? [end]
i do think that they have known they were building to the nick reveal since the beginning of season 3, but it's hard to say whether they had that in mind during season 2 (and they definitely didn't during season 1 if rio was only intended to be a character around for one season) which is why i think it can feel a bit disjointed.
i personally think that it works for a few reasons:
they deliberately had rio isolate the girls from the larger crime world which always allowed them the flexibility to open it up when they wanted without contradicting prior information
they have repeatedly indicated that rio has a much larger life than the one that we see on screen—from the introduction of Marcus (2.01) to the expansion into the pills market (2.06) to references to his dating life (4.04) to the inclusion of his physical therapy (3.10), plus his vocal admission that beth doesn't "know [his] interests" (3.04)
rio is canonically private with beth, has a vested interest in appearing all-powerful, and rio and nick both benefit from keeping their arrangement secret
they've alluded to rio having someone on the inside in some capacity since 2.03, but kept it vague enough that it could be a few different options
2.11 suggested rio was raised by his grandparent(s) when the only photo in his loft besides the ones of him and Marcus was a black and white one of an older couple, so they may have been leading up to this specific reveal
the established dynamic between rio and nick at this point appears that rio does have a lot of control over his own side of the operations unless it interferes with nick directly
in that sense, while i don't think it was glaringly obvious, and I'm not even convinced that it was always leading to this particular turn of events, i don't think it contradicts prior information. rio is still the king of his domain, he just he has resources and access to help that benefits him which he teased early on (and which incurs debts, which he shared in 3.06).
i also personally don't have an issue with it because i think it is a deconstruction of rio as some sort of untouchable all-powerful god, which i find flat and one-dimensional on a conflict-level and a characterization-level. we're stripping back the mystery, seeing behind the mask, and what we're left with is a more complex, multi-layered person. it's not the backstory i was expecting, but it is one that makes me empathize with rio and i think it's nuanced, meaty, and compelling personally.
