Woven Through Generations
Monica Zavala (Gabrielino/Tongva Nation, Acjachemen, and Mexican)
acrylic on canvas. 15” x 30”
When we engage in the art of hair braiding, we infuse it with the purity of our intentions, a gesture that takes on profound significance when it's the tresses of a beloved individual we weave. The act of braiding becomes a powerful symbol, as we intertwine three sections of hair, each one representing the mind, the body, and the spirit.
In my youth, my mother would lovingly braid my hair, creating cherished moments that have left an indelible mark on my heart. As the passage of time bestows maturity, I find myself continuing this timeless tradition by tenderly braiding her hair. In this cycle, we bridge the generations, preserving this beautiful connection that transcends both time and space. The hands that perform this act of love and tradition are mine, as I braid my mother's hair, perpetuating the legacy of our shared bond.

I have emotions around surgery. Under the readmore
I feel like some of it is obvious, given my transness and the presence of trans people in my life. For many of us (not all, but many), gender affirming procedures are life saving. They at least bring us joy and completion. At most they add to our personal life-expectancies, adding years to what feels dismal (in my experience of my dysphoria). The idea of having surgery even, gives me hope that I’ll reach an older age - complex feelings around that in particular with a history of unrelated sense of foreshortened future for me.
My mom is an organ transplant recipient. Prior to this, she was on dialysis and used an insulin pump to treat kidney disease and T1 Diabetes respectively. I remember two aspects of the process of her transplant the most.
1) That her transplant team said that T1 diabetics die on dialysis.
2) Her transplant surgeon showing her images of the organs waiting for her, and her saying how beautiful they were. I feel very sentimental about this statement, and it is a key part of the phrase I incorporated into the piece.
Her transplant turned back the clock on the kidney disease and completely eliminated the diabetes.
My mother and I share kinship in blood, surgery, and disability. This is a love letter to that.

We Are The Ocean
Ursala Hudson (Tlingit/Filipino/German)
collar: merino wool, silk, steel cones, leather. ravenstail patterns, crochet, basketry twining technique. Woman as a Wave shawl: merino wool, silk, cedar bark. chilkat and ravenstail patterns, crochet, basketry twining technique. Tidal apron: merino wool, silk, leather, steel cones. chilkat and ravenstail patterns.
“We Are the Ocean is an ensemble comprised of a collar, apron (entitled Tidal), and shawl (entitled Woman as a Wave). The collar and bottom edge of the shawl are twined using a basketry technique to bring delicacy to the regalia, made specifically to emphasize the wearer’s feminine essence. In place of the sea otter fur that traditionally lines the top of Chilkat and Ravenstail weavings, the merino weft yarns were used to crochet the collar and shawl’s neck lines, bringing forward and incorporating a European craft practiced by both my maternal (Tlingit/Filipino) and paternal (German) grandmothers. The high neck of the collar gives tribute to the Western aesthetics that have forever influenced the Indigenous cultures of our lands; with grace, we embrace that which cannot be undone, and use our new form to be better. The apron’s pattern was studied and graphed from an old Tlingit cedar bark basket, and represents the tides of our lives, as our lessons continue to arise in a revolving cycle, yet made of new debris. The repetitive pattern of the shawl represents the infinite connectedness of our sisters, mothers, aunties, and daughters. Blue lines break up inverted rows, representing the “past,” “present,” and “future,” acknowledging these concepts as irrelevant constructs that fall away when we commune with the Divine. The entire ensemble is worn to evoke the innate spirit of the Woman as an ethereal deity, that resides within us all.”
