It's conflating a lot of stuff, frankly. Leaning into one's kinks without apologetic scaffolding in the narration is different from, uh, "two people feeling the biggest craziest feelings of their entire life and they cannot do anything about it except bang it out". There are a lot of different things being clustered together here, and I frankly think it would have been served better by talking about register, rather than author motivation.

But yeah, you're right to point out that considering one's audience on any level is different from aiming to be maximally marketable. Do I "write for myself"? Sure, and one reason I got into writing fanfic was because I was burned out on public fandom interaction and needed to retreat into my own head and interpretations. But if I am putting the effort into writing at all, I am usually thinking on some level about how it will be read, even if it's just on the level of "would this paragraph be comprehensible to someone who doesn't live inside my head and already know what I mean by it?"

i dislike it in a different way? being that: i do not really enjoy reading about fucking, and am made constantly aware in fandom spaces that what is self-indulgent for me may look like holding back the good stuff to someone else. so ultimately the same reason: you're talking about how you don't want writers to give a shit but how do YOU know if a writer gives a shit? based on whether their writing is tailored to YOUR preferences?

I feel this sooo much, if for different reasons. It's actually a point of insecurity I have about my current fic, so, cool post to see at this particular moment in time!

ugh tumblr ate my first reply but. agree, & basically i think that post has the same problem as #ownvoices in that it thinks you can necessarily deduce things abt an author's positionality/attitude/&c from a text. which is just. not in fact true! sometimes your thin-slicing will be right, yes, but sometimes people are operating according to a pattern you don't personally recognize, and your assumptions about them are in fact totally off-base in erasive, dangerous ways!

Yeah, that's a good comparison. And, as I implied in my original tags, it's a little rich to frame an entire post around what you, the poster, personally like to read, but in a way that's supposed to champion personal enjoyment on the part of writers. Like.... what makes you think people who've written stuff that's off-putting to you cared about what you thought, then?

oh, ask not for whom the hyperfixation tolls. (toa, obviously.) i do have a few fics i've deleted, though, in fandoms i don't currently have any fics for. maybe i should republish them on anon? 🤔

oh...they're (almost) all str/icklake, lol. and so old! is it strange that i feel so disaffected by this? well, probably not. a good lesson in kudos being merely a measurement of "how many times people pushed the kudos button," i suppose.

5.) do you respond to comments? why or why not?

i try to! part of my general attitude of "fandom is a conversation." i worry i don't always have all the spoons to make my replies what i feel they "should" be, but i do always want to convey my gratitude for people taking the time to leave a comment at all.

6.) what's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

oh, that's easy: notstantinoplefic! unfortunately it's not yet approached something even remotely publishable, so that probably means very little. ¯\_( ᐛ )_/¯

other than that...probably the first or second parts of minor arcana. probably the first, more than the second. skrael's chapter ends on something awful but he's about to enjoy a good bit of (however fleeting) catharis; bellroc however doesn't get any closure for what happens in their chapter until they meet nari, a couple centuries later.

7.) what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

...do i have a fic that doesn't have an ultimately happy ending? 😂 oh, i am too soft. even the horrible vicious ancient wizard gods tend to go out with full stomachs, warm beds, and someone on their side.

8.) do you get hate on fics?

i'll not lie: i have glimpsed the occasional drama from over my meticulously-curated rose hedge. but most of it seems to be from children, and for all my various weaknesses, i think i can survive being vagueblogged by people who aren't old enough to vote. if not: my anon is on ╮ (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.) ╭

9.) do you write smut? if so, what kind?

i am ATTEMPTING. most of the smut i've ever read has left me generally ??? baffled, glazing over, skipping through (without animus) to the next part. again, this is not the fault of the author; it's true even of things i can tell objectively are well-written, titillating, otherwise universally acclaimed. but i enjoy thinking about character exercises, and i am not completely untemptable, so this year i've been trying to make some progress on my longtime agenda of "get the horrible bird wizard railed."

...none of which is terribly apparent given that none of it is published, ofc! but. hopefully. that may change in the not-too-distant future.

10.) do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you've written?

tbh i am very picky about crossovers. but i must admit... skraelroc necro/cav au... a man is Considering

11.) have you ever had a fic stolen?

i've had people repost my art, which (as someone who does not think of himself as an even remotely skilled artist) was very surprising. but never fic.

12.) have you ever had a fic translated?

none that i know of.

13.) have you ever co-written a fic before?

the closest i've ever come is probably blue wizard boyfriends, which is inspired by some rp shenanigans between a friend and me. but even so, my take on douxie in that series has diverged quite a bit from hers! so it doesn't really feel like "cowriting."

14.) what's your all-time favorite ship?

as your #1 friendly neighborhood degenerate not-even-actually-incest pornographer, i simply must say: nothing quite hits like a ship you literally invented

15.) what's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

to be completely honest, i do still feel the occasional pang of nostalgia for my gr/avity f/4lls fic. i had a lot of world built for it, a whole sequence/interaction arc for the characters (and not just the couple). unfortunately, even this many years later—even if i never got directly harassed—the nastiness of that fandom has still left a very strong impression on me. it was the first time i think i ever saw a/ntis in action, and i don't think i have any desire to pick that story up again.

16.) what are your writing strengths?

...worldbuilding? present tense, apparently. 😂 i've also been told i have a knack for—ah, how did he put it. understated emotional closeup shots? i think of such kind comments often, haha.

17.) what are your writing weaknesses?

discipline. not using too many semicolons. recently: not using paired adjectives. mainstream fanon. not going back over published work and finding a billion small things to fix (though i'm getting better at this).

18.) thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

...mainly: "you're lucky i didn't make myself learn actual ancient egyptian for all those dumb little skraelroc shmoop fics i keep setting in ancient egypt"

otherwise? i err on the side of under-doing it, but i love doing this. i love seeing this in fic, even if it's not a language i know. it's like a little easter egg!!

19.) first fandom you wrote for?

a very old anime fandom which i will not be revealing on main. probably twenty years ago, at this point. almost certainly on ff.net.

20.) favorite fic you've ever written?

oh, i'm not sorry. i am thinking of minor arcana so often these days, but i really am pretty proud of it. even now, more than a year later! once i have the time to go through and fine-tune everything, i'm going to bind it. it's a very weird fic, probably, but one that is nevertheless (or perhaps because of this?) very dear to my heart.

Oh man EuroVarg dub/noncon has a lot of potential. I feel like it would work well with either man being the aggressor. It’ll be interesting to see where you go with it once you nail down an idea.

Btw i wasn’t trying to criticize your blood descriptions, you handled it very well. I just like sharing the more realistic side. The movie is naturally very dramatic with its blood, and it should be it’s not a documentary or anything lol. - 🐈‍⬛

It does! I'm usually more drawn to aggressor!Euro, although I definitely can see the appeal of it the other way around and may even write something similar one day. (I think bottom/aggressor Varg would be very interesting, maybe seeking approval/affection going a bit too far.)

And I hope the necro fic will be enjoyed! I definitely want to lean heavily into the "death is beautiful" trope. Lots of romanticized descriptions of death, aestheticized descriptions of blood/gore, etc.

It will also be a total canon divergence from the movie

Oh, you're totally fine! I didn't read it as you criticizing me or anything, I just wanted to share some more of my views on it and the intention behind the fic.

Also I'm convinced someone in the movie making process has a blood kink. There are too many shots of blood on the faces of pretty men for someone involved to not have been horny about it

Have to answer these a bit awkwardly on mobile, buuuut;

3: part of any factions?

I'll use Tai for this one because he's got an old gw1 faction thats important to him, which is The Order (no, not whispers, the order of necromancy!) He's been a part of the order for a long time now in his timeline, shortly before the searing happened he was annointed as a leader figure and he's sort of remained in power since through illegitimate ways. Mostly by using his dual spec classes (necro mesmer) to kill the one selected to take over from him and assume their appearance (tai is a funky little sylvari from the original tree that spawned the seeds for the pale tree, so he's been hiding his identity around humans ever since he wandered off. As of gw2, he's still a part of the order only with his more natural appearance, up until more recently/the events after EOD

17: does your commander have a divergent story?

He does! My commander, slei, was never the commander from the 'canon' point, in fact he wasn't commander until after mordremoth was defeated. Basically, he found the resignation from the old commander which annointed the person who cared enough to discover his absence as the new commander. Slei however, was just delivering paperwork and not actually checking up on him. Slei remains commander up until current events and possibly beyond! Before he was commander, he was the leader of a robin hood style gang in lions arch, robbing nobles to feed refugees

30: how do they differ from others of their species?

Rui is a good one for this, he's my sweet little mortician sylvari; his deal is that he's quite lizard-like if you really look at his features. He has a little crest of horns on the back of his head poking through his leaves, his fingers are very narrow and 'bone-y' much like a small lizard's paws, the same for his feet, although a bit less so. He also has a plated appearance to his belly, but its just overlocking leaves and soft to the touch and not hard like scales. Rui was one of the first to hear mordremoth, even all the way in the grove, and it's argued that his wyld hunt to tend to and respect the dead was manipulated a little bit by the pale tree and that his original calling was to gather up bodies and tend to mordremoth's blighting pods, which is why he hears mordremoth loud and clear in the grove when others just hear a low whisper

I'm pretty easy to please. I enjoy canon compliant storylines or canon divergence that feels like it fits well into the world. I'm a Griddlehark shipper primarily but also feel there are no bad ships in this series, and am just as happy with & pairings as with / pairings. Won't turn down smut but am equally pleased with T-rated. Fix-its and happy endings thrill me.

I enjoy Harrow Nova fic a great deal and love the idea of additional River Bubble AUs that explore other dynamics between Harrow & Gideon. I adore Gideon-pov. Nona's time with CamPal and Pyrrha was a delight, and I love Cam and Pal AND Paul very much. Found family is great!

DNW: Rape/non-con, dubcon, modern AUs, anything Jod-centric (especially any sexual or romantic relationships with the necros and cavs of Harrow & Gideon's generation), a/b/o, mpreg, heavy kink. My very biggest DNW is anything pertaining to tooth injury, teeth falling or being knocked, or teeth generally not in the mouth where they belong. This is beyond a squick for me and falls into genuine trigger territory.

I'm genuinely easy to please.

Hot Rod struggled to pull Deadlock to a sitting position; he was so still, like he was-- 

No.  He wasn’t.  And he wouldn’t be.  

They’d been trying to escape this absolute hell of a desert planet for what must have been weeks now.  And apparently, Deadlock’s systems didn’t do as well with heat as Hot Rod’s.  Of course, he hadn’t said anything as he struggled behind Hot Rod for the last fifteen miles.  

Hot Rod wrapped his fingers around Deadlock’s finials, shaking his head back and forth, trying to jolt him back online.  “You should have told me,” he spat.  “Primus, you don’t-- don’t you fucking die.”

Deadlock remained limp, his optics dulled and offline, filling with sand as his self-cleaning systems refused to boot back up.

“You’re really gonna make me do this, huh?” Hot Rod demanded, his spark thrilling with sudden fear.  But there wasn’t any other choice.  He wasn’t gonna let Deadlock die.

He transformed the outer plating of his wrist away from the more delicate underplating, energon lines running right below the surface.  Lifting his wrist to his mouth, Hot Rod tore it open with his fangs, letting the blood run freely down to puddle in the sand below.

Quickly, he held his wrist to Deadlock’s intake. 

This better work.  

The two suns were at their zenith above his head; Hot Rod could feel his vision begin to blur, his HUD begin to glitch.  

We’re both dead if it doesn’t.

ok so this is a vague about a specific post on my dash which maybe i shouldnt do but i dont choose my interests based on what is Subversive or Politically Cool or what the fuck ever and i know i get aggro about liking tragedy which sucks because happy endings are important and i really love and value my friends who like fluff

but also it really fucking stings to be told that the only things i like and are interested will always be inferior bad writing that is setting back The Cause

no. fuck you. i want characters who die at the end. i want characters who are miserable and sad and in pain. i like les mis and the silmarillion and TMA and.... i do love some things with happy endings but most things i like are tragedies actually. and there’s this sense that.... giving characters like me tragic endings is bad politics, and it just feels like..... people with my taste, who are so fundamentally broken that they want to read about bad things happening, we don’t get to have representation

and to a certain degree that’s what happy ending fans are doing too, bc there absolutely is an idea in certain circles that tragedy is high art whereas fluff is meaningless? it’s just a fucking cycle of people being aggro at each other about what we love because we don’t feel like we’re actually allowed to just love it. or like people with cringey interests arguing that actually they’re Progressive. like..... man. have you tried just, liking things? without having to defend why they are a True Work Of Art That Is Also Politically Important? i’m still working on it myself but. if we could just all. calm down and agree that people have different tastes and that certain trends are good and other trends are bad but “having a specific taste in media” doesn’t say anything about You As A Person i think that’d be a better world
