when Star and i started working on Dancing (With Another Man) there were two things we wanted to dig into
bird flash but messy
the world building of A/B/O
if you wanna see the mess go read the fic for yourself ;]
but right now i wanna talk about a little world building rabbit hole i fell down the other night @ 2am while fighting sleep.
ramblings about the genetic inheritance of dynamics below the cut
i really went into the weeds with this one y'all. I've always been interested in genetics and if i hadn't been dead set on going to art school i might have been a bio major instead. so this was definitely more than a little self indulgent on my part.
the main question i had was how are dynamics passed from parents to offspring. i broke that very vague question down into two more specific ones:
could a child only have one of the dynamics of their parents, or were the genetics more complicated than that
if a child COULD have a dynamic that their parents didn't have, how would that work.
so at first i was kind of just writing down my thoughts based on what i remembered of genetics (i haven't taken a bio class since sophomore year of college so i was a little rusty)
what i came up with made sense to me but i didn't have the energy that night to actually research different modes of inheritance, or to figure out if what i had come up with was scientifically sound in any way.
The next day i decided to hunker down and read a whole bunch of articles trying to refresh my memory on the basics of genetics, and also looking into modes of inheritance other than complete dominance.
I knew from the beginning i didn't want any one designation to be the 'dominant' trait, or for another to be 'recessive.' i just wasn't sure exactly what mode of inheritance would make the most sense.
after a few days of hashing out the science of it (and info-dumping to Star about my findings in our discord) i figured out a system that i liked, plus it made at least some sort of scientific sense.
this is, afterall, for an omegaverse fic so i wasn't going to break my back trying to make this work. BUT its going to come into play later in the story. So i wanted it to have SOME sort of logic behind it.
So there is one gene that determines a persons Dynamic. This gene has a total of 5 alleles and a persons dynamic is a result of which two out of those 5 markers they were born with. These alleles interact with each other using the incomplete dominance mode of inheritance.
the alleles are as follows
[A]: strong presentation of Alpha traits
[a]: weak presentation of Alpha traits
[O]: strong presentation of Omega traits
[o]: weak presentation of Omega traits
[x]: no presentation of dynamic traits [recessive]
[x] is the lack of a dynamic marker, so it mirrors what ever other dynamic marker it is paired with
now these alleles can be combined in a total of 13 distinct genotypes, 12 of which result in one of the three designations, and one where an individual has no designation at all.
Alpha/Omega Genotypes:
[AA] / [Ax] | [OO] / [Ox]
an individual with these genotypes displays a strong presentation of Dynamic traits. While this could affect their physical build, what its really referring to is how the body produces hormones and pheromones. People with these genotypes produce hormones and pheromones in excess. This could cause things such as a strong scent, intense cycles, and aggressive tendencies in Alphas. In Omegas this could mean being more prone to submission or falling into the Omega headspace more readily.
[Aa] / [Oo]
an individual with these genotypes would be considered 'balanced' . They produce dynamic hormones in 'normal' levels and outside of their cycles these hormones would not impact their daily lives.
[aa] / [ax] | [oo] / [ox]
these genotypes indicate a weak presentation of dynamic traits. these individuals would produce hormones and pheromones at a deficit, and therefore would probably have a weaker scent, and milder cycles. They might also need to use CIDs to jump start their cycles if their body won't do it for them
Betas are the result of a person possessing the genetic markers for both Alpha and Omega. therefore there is no way for a Beta to possess the [x] marker
Beta Genotypes:
[AO]
A Beta with this genotype would be balanced, in that they produce equal amounts of both Alpha and Omega hormones. Not enough for them to experience either cycle, but someone with this genotype could probably make the noises of either dynamic pretty convincingly.
[Ao] / [Oa]
a Beta with these genotypes would produce more of hormones of one dynamic than the other. This could cause increased aggression (Ao) or a tendency toward submission (Oa) and psuedo-cycles. This is often treated using suppressants or inducers to bring the hormone level back to equilibrium.
[ao]
a Beta with this genotype barely produces dynamic hormones at all. Their scent would most likely be weak, and they probably would have a hard time convincingly making the noises of either of the other two designations. But since they don't cycle there is no reason to 'treat' this condition.
and finally we arrive at [xx]
the most common examples of someone being [xx] would be Atlanteans and Amazonians. Both of those groups broke off from humanity before the rest of the population developed the genetic markers that give a person their designation.
But humans can also have the [xx] genotype, it is just extremely rare (about 8% of the worlds population has this combination, though most of that 8% is made up of Amazonians and Atlanteans).
So with the info dump out of the way, here are some examples (using characters from d(wam)) of how dynamics are inherited.
Dick
Dicks parents were both Omegas, which did mean dick was guaranteed to be an omega, but he does have an entirely different genotype than either of his parents Mary Grayson was, [OX] while John was [Oo]. meaning dick could have been [OO], [Oo], [Ox], or [ox]. He is [OO] and im sure if you have been reading the story this will come as no surprise to you.
Wally
wally is an interesting case. Rudy West is [xx], and Mary West is [AO]. Their family functions more as a typical family unit than a pack seeing as Rudy doesnt have a dynamic a all. However, often people who are born [xx] are just lumped in as a Beta since physically there is not much of a difference between someone with no designation and a Beta. Because of this Wally could Only be an Alpha [Ax] or an omega [Ox]. As im sure you've guessed Wally has the [Ax] allele combination.
Bruce
Both Martha and Thomas wayne were Betas, [AO], and [ao] respectively. This means Bruce had a chance to be an Alpha [Aa], Omega [Oo], or Beta [Ao] [Oa]. Bruce ended up with the [Ao] combo. For any of our readers who have been wondering "whats Bruce's deal?" this might give you just a bit of context.

red souls aren’t determination souls
so we know the colors and souls traits are linked because of the ball game
Tumblr media
but note, red doesn’t get listed as determination.
GOLD is what actually is the color for determination.
Tumblr media
(ignore how things are orange tinted, i have flux on and its 2am) determination is listed in yellow text.
it flat out says you’re filled with determination every time you use it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
note there are no red flowers, but a very distinct golden flower instead.
Tumblr media
and golden flowers are frequently connected with determination. flowey is one injected with dt, chara is buried under the patch of flowers, they’re here underground purely because of chara’s dying wish and desire to use their will past death. one could say it represents that will to live despite everything else, even death itself. which. again, is what determination is.  The will to keep living. The resolve to change fate.
more evidence DT is yellow:
Tumblr media
selected text is yellow, not red
Tumblr media
as is the SAVE point. hell, even frisk is yellow. the golden heart lockets are yellow. (though, how canon that is up to debate, as we only see it in the collector’s edition as a merchandise, not ingame. but alas.)
yellow/golden is frequently and constantly used to refer for determination. and again, there isn’t a red flower, but rather the golden flower taking it’s place.
now granted, chara does use red text in no mercy and has a red soul judging by their empty casket. but that just means chara had a red soul, not that they were a determined soul! remember, the other humans souls have determination.
“I've extracted it from the human SOULs.”
if you go back without using a true reset, toriel will comment this upon your butterscotch/cinnamon choice. that she feels deja vu with humans, as if shes met them before
Tumblr media
RED souls can’t be determination, determination is a trait shared between different soul color humans. to further this, the red soul we control in deltarune is the one we use yes, but we don’t USE determination to save. we use the “power of” something else, like fluffy boys and mean girls. it’s distinctly not a yellow light, its distinctly not listed as the feeling of determination. now, if the red soul was determination, than shouldn’t the power/save be the same?
now, what is the trait or red souls? i speculate below because this post is already fricking so long. i don’t have a concrete answer, but at least i have something?
so again, we know chara and frisk have red souls. chara has red text in no mercy, (though, not solely red text through the whole run) other uses of red are with sans mentioning LV as Level of Violence and EXP as Execution points. (which matches how chara says they are the stats and numbers of the game, including GOLD and LV and such)
Tumblr media
another mention is asgore, when toriel brings him up as the one who killed the other humans. (there are more uses of red text as listed on this awesome link, however, these seem to be the biggest standouts. not discounting them, but i don’t really feel the need to add the snail race end into this theory)
Tumblr media
now that said i AIN’T saying chara is inherently evil or that red souls being linked to violence/warnings means evil either. afterall, we use a red soul in detarune too, and nothing about the player or kris (tho, kris isn’t likely to be the original owner of the soul) are inherently violent. (and honestly i’m not as well versed with dr as ut, idk if/when red text is ever shown to compare it to.) LV isn’t the ONLY thing chara says they are.
"HP. ATK. DEF. GOLD. EXP. LV. Every time a number increases, that feeling...That's me."
so maybe less so LV and more so the game mechanics and gui??? they are the flavor text after all? that doesn’t seem right either.
so, no i don’t think red = wrath is fully accurate or necessarily bad. the game itself is about choice, defying the status quo and fate itself to get what you want. maybe the use of determination over coming your wrath/violence is the point? i mean, their wrath is what was their character flaw that got them into this in the first place. them overcoming their mistake and growing from that despite their wrath is their character arc!
and to be clear, chara’s anger is honestly valid because humanity has done inexcusable and horrible things to both them and monsterkind. i mean, no, murder wasn’t the solution obviously, but frankly they’re a kid and the mages designed the barrier with death-ultimatums. Also like, Undyne is TOTALLY framed as heroic and in the right for fighting the player in no mercy. you CAN do true pacifist and punch every monster you meet. violence isn’t inherently bad, and can be used for good. self defense is fine, fighting people who wish harm innocents is fine. ideally don’t kill or be killed.
anyway, back to the red soul thing equally danger/violence and such. the link i posted earlier mentions its also with undyne’s speech and theres the red “!” in battle to warn players of upcoming attacks. asgore is frequently used in red and his trident is also red. the color theming is clearly pointing to something here. even if its not necessarily LV, i think its within the ball park. again, it doesn’t fully match because as far as i’m aware DR doesn’t hint towards any of this and doesn’t fully explain everything. AND i think its dumb for chara and frisk’s soul trait to be violence. esp when every other trait got a virtue-like feeling to it. it doesn’t hold up.
perhaps... red could mean heroism?
granted, more of a stretch here, but heros are talked about A LOT in undertale. not so much in words, but thematically. papyrus is based off an obscure super hero, undyne has Battle Against a True Hero in her no mercy battle, mtt uses heroism in his dramas/acting. ect.
now, this one feels too vague and nonsuported but it feels REALLY meta and on point at the same time. i mean. the red soul being the hero, the protagonist? oh my god. thats frickin amazing. on-top of that, heros are brought up ALL the time with deltarune. the heroes of light, ralsei insisting they need to be heroic, augh. it fits!
and heroes are so known for their violence too! heroic violence, sure, but its such a more positive note of it when you think of heroes . and chara’s wrath is in part for a heroic reason! perhaps wrath is the sin of the heroic virtue!
i’m really curious to what other people think!

There are still a few things in public life that you cannot fake. You can fake photographs and you can fake news. You can fake conviction and you can fake emotions. You can fake a Twitter-petition and you can fake Facebook outrage. But you cannot fake an almighty crowd.
The numbers attending Saturday’s march for a second “people’s vote” on Brexit will no doubt be contested. The organisers claimed more than a million people were out; detractors inevitably argued a few thousand fewer. But make no mistake, for anyone who travelled to it, and shuffled along among it and who tried to find their way home after it, the Put it to the People march represented a formidable sea of humanity, and a powerful strength of feeling.
And let no one tell you that this was just a London crowd. By 10.30 at Speaker’s Corner there were people arriving for the high noon rendezvous from all corners of the country and beyond. Groups draped in the saltires of Scotland and the dragons of Wales. Anna Soubry MP was among the earliest arrivals, walking cheerfully down Park Lane through the gathering crowds with her daughter (“my security for the day”) having been forced to stay away from her home last night after death threats.
Meanwhile phones were alive with feeds and photos of people making their way from Newport and Newcastle, Carlisle and Canterbury. An entire train had been booked from Bristol, rattling along Brunel’s Great Western Railway into Paddington. There were overnight coaches from Inverness, dawn starts from Cornwall.
Some had gone more than the extra mile. Ed Sides, 63, had walked here from his home in Swansea over the past couple of weeks. I’d spoken to him on the penultimate leg of his journey, along the Grand Union Canal. “If I didn’t do something I felt I would regret it for the rest of my life,” he said, voicing the sentiment of many. Sides had tried to make the theme of his quest “walking and talking”: “When you talk to ardent Leavers and you meet them on the street, or by a riverbank where they are fishing or whatever, you find you can have a proper conversation,” he said. “And that’s something we all need to do in the coming days.”
Like many of the marchers, he felt that if nothing else walking had been a good way of avoiding the stress and frustrations of watching the news. “I thought, if I am sitting at home on Twitter for the next three weeks I am going to go insane.”
That feeling was shared by those expats who had flown in from the continent who, having been denied a vote in the first referendum, were now facing the climax of three years of painful uncertainty. Rebecca MacKian, 52, who has lived in Turin for the past 15 years, joined up with 20 others from the “British in Italy” group to be here.
“If no-deal happens then the next morning we will become what the Italian government now calls an ‘illegal resident’,” she said, a status that will affect everything about her life from driving a car to continuing to run her training business. “We have literally been working every day – 1,000 days – with each other to try to get some clarity on all of it. I never thought I would become addicted to Parliament TV, but I have.”
Jason Harris, 47, had got up at 2am to be here with his 14-year-old son Oran. They lived on the frontline of backstop territory in South Armagh, Northern Ireland, three miles from the border. Harris, a landscape designer who works on both sides of the border every week, also felt he had to be here rather than shouting at the television. “It is clear that either no deal or her deal will leave things in Northern Ireland up in the air for years,” he said. “I fear we will spend the next decades just trying to get back the freedoms we have given away.”
Like many on the march his priority had changed in the past week or so, with the options narrowing and the cliff-edge looming, and the online petition torevoke article 50 climbing towards 5 million signatures. “Revoke would now be number one, number two people’s vote,” he said. That idea had travelled in this crowd. Variations of the three Rs populated signs and banners: revoke, remain and reform.
There have been many attempts to divide the respective Leave and Remain tribes since the referendum – into somewheres and nowheres, populists and globalists, gammons and snowflakes.
One of the simplest distinctions, however, has always seemed to come down to that division between those who relish the idea of being cheek-by-jowl with people unlike themselves, and those who feel threatened by that idea. As the tide of protesters inched its way along Piccadilly toward Trafalgar Square it looked like an above-ground exhibition of what most Londoners experience below ground every day: the tolerant sharing of space with others. The people who had come to demonstrate voiced, above all, a conviction, to borrow that telling phrase from Jo Cox, “that we have more in common than that which divides us”. (Cox, it goes without saying, would have loved this event. Her killer would have loathed it.)
There had been suggestions that the march would be met by counter-demonstrations, but there were none in evidence. As the crowd first massed, with its blue and gold EU flags, I heard one or two shouts of “traitors” from those driving by. These “patriots” would have done well to talk to Brigadier Stephen Goodall, who led the “Veterans For EU” group.
Goodall will be 97 in June. He had travelled up from his home in Devon with four generations of his family including his great-granddaughter. During the war he helped to pull survivors out of the rubble of the Coventry bombing. He served in India and Burma and was awarded the Military Cross in 1945 for bravery behind enemy lines.
I had spoken to the brigadier the day before the march about his reasons for coming. “It was an easy decision,” he said. “There is not much time left for me to do anything and I just feel if we can even at this late stage get people thinking sensibly, then it will be worthwhile.” His great anxiety, as a former controller of the Slimbridge Wildlife Trust, was that our fractured politics would deflect us from the co-operative spirit required to combat climate change. “One thing that I always bear in mind from when we were in Malaya in the 1950s,” he said, “was this imperative that governance was first about reaching hearts and minds. We need politicians who think first of people,” he said, “not about their investments in the City of London.”
Goodall was pushed in his wheelchair near the head of the march, along with a brass band. It was impossible watching that sight not to make some comparisons with those few stubborn souls on the ill-fated “March to Leave”, moved to trudge along lonely hard-shoulders by Nigel Farage, only to find that he had turned up for the photo opportunity and left them to fend for themselves. Farage, alive to BBC requirements for “balance”, had returned to preach on Saturday to his handful of leaderless foot soldiers at a pub car park in Linby, Nottinghamshire: “You are the 17.4 million,” he told a crowd of 150.
As the thousands upon thousands flowed down towards Parliament Square there was, contrarily, a spirit that the Brexiters have failed over the past three years ever to begin to convey: that of creative optimism. You saw it in the 100 and more tango dancers led by Matthew Cooper, who had met in growing numbers on each of the past three protest marches, aged between 20 and 80. And in the improvised speeches on freedom given by an Emmeline Pankhurst lookalike under the statue of the suffragette. And even in the bloke flogging Donald Trump toilet rolls from a shopping trolley to stockpile should the rationing begin.
There was a very droll Britishness in the spirit that tempered any edges of anger from the many younger voices on the march. There were lots more students’ union buses than on previous marches, and among them plenty who had lost their faith in the Labour leadership to solve the crisis and deliver on its conference commitment to campaign for a second referendum.
Power wants your body softening in your chair and your emotions dissipating on a screen. Get outside.
That brief marchers’ favourite “Oooh Jeremy Corbyn” had been replaced for several sections of this crowd by a more plaintive “Where’s Jeremy Corbyn?” The answer, perversely, was that the Labour leader was canvassing in Morecambe Bay – about as far from this event as it was symbolically possible to go.
Only one of Labour’s frontbench felt able to lend his voice to this event. Tom Watson, breaking ranks, was given something of a hero’s welcome on the speakers’ stage alongside some of those others who have emerged from the sorry parliamentary process with heads held high: Soubry, Jess Phillips, Dominic Grieve, David Lammy, Caroline Lucas; and some of those from beyond the Commons who have best articulated the cause of returning to the people to find a way through the current impasse: Michael Heseltine and Nicola Sturgeon.
Their collective message served as a reminder that when the prime minister stands up again this week and claims to speak for “the people” with her unloved deal and her fingernails-down-the-blackboard phrases about delivering Brexit, she will not speak for the million individuals who filled the wide streets and squares of the capital yesterday, or for the millions more across the country who were with them in spirit.
Watching the crowd I was reminded of a book I reviewed for this paper not long after those electoral convulsions of 2016 here and across the Atlantic. The book, On Tyranny, by the Yale historian Timothy Snyder, was a little survival guide against the digital forces of populism and the brutalist politics they promoted. Snyder called above all for a “corporeal politics” in response, for voting with paper ballots that can be counted and recounted; for face-to-face conversation, and for marching rather than online petitioning: “Power wants your body softening in your chair and your emotions dissipating on a screen. Get outside. Put your body in unfamiliar places with unfamiliar people.”
Those who did this on Saturday will no doubt be told in the coming days, as Britain determines the kind of country it will become, that they were wasting their time and effort. But this march mattered in the simple and fundamental way that mass marches always matter: as a reminder to those who make decisions in their name that democracy is not a settled state, but a shifting expression of collective will. As one little girl’s sign had it: “The people are STILL speaking”.

How to crush content creation on social media in 2019
Sometimes, creating content that resonates with your social media audiences can feel as mystifying as the task confronting Mickey Mouse in “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”.
Needing to complete some chores, Mickey cast a spell meant to make things easier, but it had an unpredictable effect. Any social media manager who has encountered an unexpected wave of responses or been stumped by changes to a platform’s algorithms – maybe the closest real-world equivalent to magic spells, as powerful as they are inscrutable – can probably relate.
Mastering social media content creation isn’t magic, luckily. However, reaching audiences at scale requires practice and a systematic approach, which can be hard work. Indeed, 60% of content marketers find it challenging to consistently produce engaging material, showing the opportunity for improvement.
Why invest in social media content creation in the first place?
With an effective social media content strategy, you can not only reach a potentially vast audience, but also establish yourself as a credible authority in your field and create a reliable conversion pipeline.
Compelling social content literally pays off:
Over half of marketers see social media as a driver of increased leads, sales, partnerships, and fan development.
Almost 90% of marketers feel their social efforts have boosted exposure for their organisations, while 72% say they’ve resulted in increased site traffic.
Three in four consumers have bought something they’ve seen in a brand’s social media feed.
More people get their news from social media (20%) than from newspapers (16%).
Nearly 70% of online marketers cite visual content – the type of marketing collateral most optimised for social channel engagement – as very important to their marketing strategy.
While we can’t provide a magic spell that will instantly supercharge your social media marketing efforts, we can offer the next best thing: Proven tips on what works when creating content for your social media audiences.
Let’s get started!
1. Focus on visual assets, especially infographics and videos
Videos, photos, and infographics all perform exceptionally well in a world in which Instagram Stories, Twitch livestreams, and YouTube explainers have captured a huge share of all online attention.
In fact, “visual images” are the preferred social-centric medium among marketers, ahead of blogs, videos, live streams, and podcasts.
This shouldn’t be surprising, as a well-crafted infographic can convey a lot of data in a concise format and leave a lasting impression.
Infographic guidelines
Most people retain only 10% of something they heard after 3 days, compared to 65% retention of images they saw. When you create an infographic for a social media post, keep these guidelines in mind:
Keep the text short
Long, wordy sentences are sometimes good in blog posts, but they take up too much space in infographics, cluttering the design. Use simple sentences with parallel (similar) structure for easy readability and consistent design across social media platforms.
Let the design do the talking
Infographics should be as visual as they are informative. Multiple images adhering to a single theme – for example, racing or cars for a graphic about “driving” engagement – will often grab the viewer’s eye and hold their attention.
Use statistics if relevant
Interesting statistics are memorable, plus they don’t take up much space. So if you come across a gem like the fact that 79% of people scan online content rather than read it word-for-word, see if you can work it in.
Pick a narrow topic and concise design
The best infographics are concise and easy to view. As such, they usually focus on just a single topic. Don’t try to make it another blog post or, worse, a mini whitepaper that tries to cover far too much in far too little space.
Cite everything
Infographic statistics and mini-sized facts can seem like they came out of nowhere, which reduces the credibility of the asset when someone tries to verify them. Include a list of URLs and other sources at the end of the infographic to show your work.
Video guidelines
For videos, the same general advice about brevity applies, along with a few more pointers specific to the format:
Use subtitles
Closed captions began as an accessibility feature, but they benefit everyone. For starters, they’re one of the best ways to increase viewer focus and a preference of Gen Z viewers in particular. Brands such as Dunkin’ have also made creative use of subtitles to call attention to marketing messages that might otherwise get lost in the din of a busy social media feed.
youtube
Think about animation
Animation is a great way to give a video a distinctive aesthetic and expand the range of what it can portray. This DocuSign explainer video makes the most of its animation to show its subject performing a bunch of different tasks in various contexts, before pivoting to a depiction of her going “all digital” as papers fly across the room.
youtube
Incorporate CTAs
You should always have an answer for viewers wondering what to do next. An effective CTA will direct them without seeming too salesy. Dropbox incorporated a pitch-perfect CTA – “Keep teams flowing” – at the end of this action-packed 30-second video which also calls out the “flow” verbiage earlier on to set up the conclusion.
youtube
2. Tailor your content to each platform
Every social media channel has its own distinctive character. Accordingly, it’s essential to fine-tune your content for each one. That process starts with analysing details from tools like Instagram Insights and Facebook Audience Insights, which offer details on audience location, age, gender, and more.
Knowing these details makes it easier to dial-in your messaging, create buyer personas, and take advantage of the features of the platforms you’re using, whether that’s a live video on Instagram, a curated collection on Pinterest, or a text post on LinkedIn. Here’s a primer on what to keep in mind for some of the most popular social channels.
Facebook
Facebook posts with images or videos in them get more than twice the engagement of ones without any visuals.
With that in mind, a useful tactic is to mix text and pictures to take advantage of Facebook’s relatively large character limit and engage the audience in multiple ways. Nike did this in a spot featuring basketball star LeBron James, which was accompanied by a short poem that wouldn’t have fit on platforms such as Twitter.
If you go the text-only route, asking for audience input and responses is also a generally reliable technique for boosting engagement.
YouTube
YouTube’s algorithms recommend shorter videos to mobile users, who account for 70% of all YouTube views, and longer ones for anyone using the TV app. That might make it seem like short videos are best. However, half of video-viewing time on smartphones is on videos 20 minutes or longer, and these videos drive higher ad revenue. So it pays to mix up your video lengths while always thinking about the hook in your intro and the overall production quality of the video.
Instagram
Instagram’s distinctive, filter-driven aesthetic puts a premium on visual flair, but posting beautiful imagery alone won’t be enough to consistently engage the platform’s largely under-35 audience. Successful Instagram videos from brands often take the form of a product sneak preview, a behind-the-scenes video tour of an interesting site, a narrative, or a contest. This Salomon audience caption contest – about abolishing cliches about women – is a strong example of the latter.

Pinterest
The long half-life of content on Pinterest means that evergreen assets do particularly well on this platform. Information-dense infographics are also perfect for Pinterest due to their predominantly vertical layouts, but it’s important to get the right aspect ratio. Pinterest recommends 600 x 900 pixels, or a 2:3 width to height ratio for the best results.
LinkedIn
Compared to the other social networks examined here, LinkedIn has a design that’s more text-oriented, which makes sense given its role as a clearinghouse for resumes, career updates and business news. That creates an opening for content types that might struggle to stand out elsewhere. While native video is gradually becoming a powerful force on LinkedIn, it’s also possible to get significant engagement with text-only posts, particularly lists and updates interspersed with emojis and slide decks made with the LinkedIn-owned SlideShare.
3. Create a content calendar
When you post is often as important as what you post. I mean, if you were a TV executive, would you air The Bachelor at 2am instead of primetime? Probably not, and the same holds true for publishing the high-quality content you and your team have developed.
In this context, content calendars supported by scheduling tools are your friends.
Consider Facebook. Data assembled by Sprout Social revealed that the highest engagement for Facebook posts was on Wednesdays and Thursdays, between noon and 2pm, with dramatic drop-offs on weekends and after 5pm.
To capitalise on peak posting times, use tools such as Buffer, Dlvr.it, Sprout Social, HootSuite, and CoSchedule. Versatile tools such as Airtable and Feedly can also support advanced scheduling regimens.
What does an effective content calendar look like? It’ll vary by company, but usually it will:
Incorporate a brand persona(s): A brand persona encapsulates your organisation’s voice, whether it’s casual, serious, or somewhere in between. Having a well-defined persona makes it easier to select the right content formats and topics for a calendar. For example, Nike’s performance-centered brand persona has always lent itself well to still imagery.
Make the most of existing assets: You don’t have to reinvent the wheel each time you build or update your content calendar. Evergreen collateral such as old whitepapers or blog posts can often be transformed into infographics or short video explainers that help populate the calendar. Re-optimising this previous content can also yield eye-popping results for metrics like keyword rankings.
Have a variety of “shows”: Content marketing expert Jay Baer came up with this idea of comparing content calendar deliverables to TV shows that maintain regular viewerships. For instance, a quarterly or yearly whitepaper or eBook is like a special episode, while weekly videos or blog roundups are like regularly scheduled programming and series are akin to binge-worthy shows.
4. Harness the power of user-generated content
To kick off 2019, Apple announced its Shot on iPhone contest, a campaign asking any iPhone user to submit a photo taken via iPhone to a panel of judges. The winners would then have their photos featured on official Apple billboards.
It was a smart way to showcase the power of the device’s cameras without needing to resort to heavy-handed marketing speak or the use of Apple-produced photos, either of which might have come off as inauthentic. The idea was that anyone could take a professional-grade photo with the standard-issue iPhone in their pocket – a powerful notion, similar to Andy Warhol’s famous quip that every Coke was, in theory, of equal quality.
This type of user-generated content (UGC) has gained significant traction as brands look for ways to increase social media engagement and reshape perceptions of their authenticity. In addition to the Apple campaign, famous examples of UGC include Coca-Cola’s “Share a Coke” initiative with names that appeared on each can and Starbucks’ White Cup Contest encouraging consumers to doodle on their plain cups and share the images on social media.

UGC has numerous benefits, including:
Increased engagement
Pairing UGC with professionally produced content marketing can raise engagement by 28%, higher than either one on its own. UGC also works around ad blockers and connects with audiences more effectively than either ads or branded content – many consumers trust peer or online recommendations much more than traditional forms of marketing.
Better alignment with audience expectations
A pair of studies from Cohn & Wolfe and Mindshare North America found that trustworthiness and authenticity were in the top five brand attributes important to millennials, who were skeptical of overtly salesy tactics. In this context, UGC can make a big impression.
High cost-effectiveness
A UGC campaign can provide a lot of mileage for relatively little fuel. It can be a low-cost alternative to creating all of your content on your own time and dime, although as we noted earlier the best approach is usually to pair UGC with professionally produced assets.
5. Enlist influencers in your social media marketing campaigns
Like UGC, influencer marketing is a cost-effective way to strengthen and diversify your social media marketing initiatives by tapping into the power of people beyond your own team. An influencer is anyone who has significant clout on a social media platform. Many brands have successfully enlisted influencers to produce high-quality social media posts that reach large, trusting audiences.
Pepsi took this route with its huge #SayItWithPepsi marketing strategy, which revolved around special bottles adorned with 200 unique #PepsiMoji and sold exclusively at Walgreens and Duane Reade. Influencers created a variety of content, including videos, photos, and blog posts, for multiple social media channels.

The result? High engagement and reach, at a fraction of the cost of conventional display ad-driven social media marketing. #SayItWithPepsi generated 46 million impressions across social media platforms including Instagram and Twitter, along with 50,000 measurable engagements. Buying ads to reach a comparable audience would have cost 5 times as much!
6. Select the right tools for your projects
For implementing all of the tips we have provided here in your social media content strategy, it helps to have powerful, versatile content creation tools.
We’ve mentioned a few so far, mainly social media management and scheduling apps, but there are many others in categories like:
Photo editors: Adobe PhotoShop, Pixlr.com, Canva, PicMonkey
Audio and video solutions: Animoto, Biteable, Placeit, Anchor
Presentation software: Google Slides, Microsoft PowerPoint, SlideShare, SlideSnack
Text tools: Grammarly, ZenPen, Hemingway
This isn’t a comprehensive list, of course. There are so many worthwhile utilities out there for creating the engaging, visually appealing content that succeeds on social media. It’s worth exploring as many as you can to find the ones that fit your workflow and budget.
Becoming a social media master in 2019 and beyond
We admit it: getting to grips with all of the nuances and challenges of creating social-optimised content can feel overwhelming. Social media audiences are vast and have ever-evolving tastes, while the platforms themselves are constantly changing. But there’s a replicable science and an art to mastering social content creation. We hope this guide will be helpful as you fine-tune your social media content strategy now and in the future.

How to Improve Your Essay Writing Instantly
A Step-by-Step Guide
Whatever your new brilliance -- whether you are a mathematics genius, a sporting hero or (like me) a blinky, strangest kind -- there's a place in all students' educational livelihood when currently being great in life implies being proficient in experiments.
As the areas you study acquire more complicated and complicated, you are more questioned to assume, appraise, and have opinionswhere you once may have built calculations or even heard definitions. In general, the further you progress through your education, the more rote learning will be substituted with the type of analysis usually best exhibited through universities. Should by some astonishing accomplishment you manage to stop producing anything substantial at senior high school, it truly is something you'll almost surely need to confront college -- yes, even even if you're studying a science subject (although the essays wont ordinarily be rather so extended). One way or the other, essay producing comes to all.
In essays, such as conducting, practice makes perfect; but together with running the correlation is much significantly more obvious.
The odds is that in any time from the not-too-distant foreseeable future (if you don't are incredibly averse and indecent resourceful) you will have to write a composition, either in assessment terms or on your time, which will depend towards your last grade in some way. If that is a chilling potential for you personally, there is very good news and bad news. The bad thing about composition writing is it's maybe not a thing -- such as French verbs, or even the ability to conduct long distances -- that gets far better on its own if you merely continue having a go. To strengthen in essay creating, students usually desire a paradigm change: to determine exactly what isn't functioning, and why, and to learn and apply a new direction of accomplishing things.
The excellent news, on the other hand, is the fact that the individual skills necessary to compose a solid essay are things you are able to study, practise and boost inside. This guide is about pinpointingwhat these skills might function, and providing you with some hints as to how you may possibly develop them. Maybe not these suggestions will do the job for you all, but being good at composition writing, such as being proficient at some other school-related field, is exactly about trying various things, and also devising your method of doing matters. Finding organised
Libraries are purpose-designed for analyzing. Bedrooms aren't.
Before you start setting up an essay, I'd recommend you sit right down and also have a fast think about the method that you would like todo it. To begin with, what tools are you going to require? The internet, or catalogue books? This may possibly affect exactly where and the manner in which you opt to operate: I have lost a tremendous period of time seeking to come across models of posts about the web that I knewhave been in novels at the library, or simply mainly because I wished to just work at home rather than departing the house. I would advise taking yourself to some library ninety-nine days outside of a hundred.
Second, in the event that you should be running from downloadable or books articles, are you able to perform somewhere without the internet? The absence of Facebook and Insta-gram will promise your concentration will likely be around one hundred times greater, which may reveal within the quality of one's work out.
Next, produce a little timeline for your own essay. Get a summary of everything that you want to browse and try to contact all your material before starting. Take into consideration exactly how long you are likely to spend researching and reading, planning, and creating -- making a time or 2 prior to the deadline to generate some important adjustments, or only if things do not go to strategy. I'd urge devoting 3 hrs learn a 20-page article, and approximately each day to create 2000 words. This may sound like a silly amount of preparation, however the purpose of this is this: countless of allnighters have taught me essay-writing becomes exceptionally stressful and debilitating once you're up against the clock, along with a reader can tell immediately if something is hurried or hurried away in 2am on your afternoon of the deadline. What's more, you simply wont possess your best creative ideas under pressure.
If you have time, take a good look at this -- comically eighties and marginally cringey -- online video concerning creativity. A whole lot of that which the speaker says about thinking and playfulness isalso my own estimation, directly related to essay-writing. Collecting information
Looking at matters apart from the established reading list means you will not be reading all the same things as your own classmates, but leading to an even more original and intriguing essay.
Some educators place studying lists for essays, or create suggestions about where by students should start looking for advice; others request that you discover sources yourself. If a instructor does prescribe reading, it really is definitely worth visiting if you are able to find some thing extra that may add dimension, thickness or a fresh outlook to a own argument. But, it is crucial to consider very carefully about if it's the resource is reliable and valuable. What sort of resources should I use?
Even the most suitable resources will vary in the susceptible to issue. Here Are Some Usual kinds:
-- educational articles: These are essays by scholars in universities, and generally published in journals or as books. They are always useful, and certainly will be found by hunting within the library (ask your teacher for tips!) , having a poke around Google Scholar, or, even if your faculty has a subscription, on the website JSTOR.org. Search for key words and phrases and see what's up.
-- Newspaper posts: might be invaluable evidence for a composition in Background, but may possibly not be technical or detailed enough to get Biology. If you take advantage of a paper article or opinion piece, consider the facets that could prejudice it and include your thinking on your article!
-- Wikipedia: a very helpful starting point, and a progressively reliable source. Yet, stay clear of referencing it some teacher or examiner might maybe not like it and can withdraw against your own essay. Alternatively, look at the reference section in the bottom of the post and see where the author has accumulated their advice from.
-- Online websites: in general, avoid these, as that you don't know who's created them and just how valuable their own view is, or reliable their own truth. The exceptions are blogs by well-known pros. How should I take notes?
Make notes of things which seem fascinating as well as matters that are strictly appropriate. You want to be certain you answer fully the question but this interesting comment will frequently work its way in your essay and you also don't desire to squander ages hunting to this.
It might feel as the planet's biggest faff, however, taking good notes from your sources can save a Large Amount of time for those who return into program and write your composition:
-- Form notes out since you browse, rather than simply underlining or highlighting thus you'll have a summary of one of the absolute most important chunks of documents ready to use while you plan, rather than having to trawl through whole documents again searching for quotes.
-- because of this, if you believe you may want to quote something, then copy it out at the exact wording of the author.
-- kind notes at a different colour for every single fresh resource you browse. As a way to participate intelligently using that which you have read, then you've got to consider who said what, what they intended because of it, who they ended up fighting and if or not you agreed with them not. Colours really are a really useful visual assistance to do so.
-- In the end of each new informative article or article, publish a few lines summarising the author's major points, and whether you accept them.
N.B. Your significant engagement with all the scholars and writers whose work you have examine will depend to get a huge chunk of marks. This doesn't mean list a load of titles and rehearsing their disagreements; nor does it mean disagreeing with everyone else for your sake of it. As an alternative, think of whether or maybe everything they're arguing is valid on your experience -- or compare them to eachother. Planning
Adequate preparation at sea will help you avoid sea creatures. Decent planning in essays may help you avoid immaterial waffle.
Planning is the one most crucial action in writing a superb essay, and, frustratingly, also the measure which is most often rushed or ignored with college students. In case your documents often become criticised for obtaining inferior arrangement or uncertain traces of debate, chances are you want to practise your preparation. I utilize the subsequent step procedure to turn my notes to some superior strategy; you can take to it as well, and find out whether it will work for you.
Inch) re read your notes a number times, and then subtract what you think is particularly important, interesting, or highly relevant to this location of the topic you would like to talk about. So far as you can, attempt to rewire your thinking right into sections, and see whether you may link ideas with each other.
Suggestion: It might be that you have got three or two distinct ideas for an interest, and also you are unsure which to proceed along with: in this circumstance, you can work with a number distinct spider diagrams to find out which works best. Where would you the ideas connect together readily, or collapse right into neat segments? Which question will you be equipped to remedy most fully?
Two) Sit and then appear at your diagram(s), probably along with your notes, and work from exactly the primary 'position' or decision you would like to earn on your article. The best documents are evidenced with a clear field of argument throughout -- that I actually don't really get the thought that essays should present either side of a question. I regularly pick what I'm trying to state; the idea that I wish to complete with, until I commence. Now, the job you've got on paper the essay is really to set this decision up.
3) Work backward, using the inbound links you have made on your spider diagram: what do you need to assert or show to earn your point? Jot these 'points' down into a couple of words per day. This consists of the starts of the sword for the essay.
4) Start to complete your sword together with information from the notes, and some extra ideas you might have. If you are writing a literature informative article, it is vital that you involve a few close evaluation of passages to strengthen your argument. Jot down the paragraphs which link these in to the larger arrangement.
5) Fill your skeleton out increasingly more and more, until it's essentially a tough draft in bullet points. Every single twist or nuance of your debate should take there; each and every opening and concluding sentence for every paragraph, making it explicit how this paragraph answers your question.
Non-experts can be just as easy as authorities for appearing on work; if your composition is logical to somebody who does not know much in regards to the subject accessible, that's a great indicator.
6) At this point, it's very useful in the event that you can get some one (a friend or even a parent will probably perform) to read over your plan and find out if it is logical. Does all trace? Is it all relevant? Your approach should be so complete that the man or woman who reads it's going to immediately be able to spot any flaws. Move things around, add or delete to incorporate their criticism: it's easier to alter some thing in bullet-point arrangement than if it is all written out correctly.
Do not expect this technique to be quick or straightforward. For a 1500-word essay, I typically compose a plan of roughly three components, and then spend at least three hours making sure that before I set pen to paper, each kink in my debate will be ironed out. The pay off of doing it in this way is the fact that the producing procedure is short and easy -- even a case of joining up the dots, polishing bullet-points into sentences -- superior than picking out notions and also imitating thoughts in the same period as finding the words to state them.
Get better and better: Should you fight together with structure or clarity, practise your own planning! Give yourself a restricted quantity of time (state, two hours), decide on several previous essay questions in a review or coursework paper, and plan your answers as quickly as feasible. Get your instructor to check about your plans if you are completed. Writing
Even the 'actual producing'-bit may be absolutely the absolute most daunting and most stressful portion of the essay practice, and that's really where most students get stuck. Below Are Some tried-and-tested solutions to common writing problems: I can not begin
Blank webpages turned into not as frightening once they aren't blank any more. You can polish your style after; now could be the full time merely to find some thing published.
Extremely common to want your first sentence to be arresting, paradigm-shifting, to propel your audience headlong in your composition. But this urge might be paralysing: one of their most stressful feelings in the world is that of looking in a blank page, believing regarding the variety of phrases you'll need to fill up it. The real key to starting is always to just write some thing. Do not fret about how good it really can be -- put it down, and move on, and then return back and change it out when you're into your own flow. Writers' block
Return back for your program and make sure that you know what you're claiming. In the event that it is sti can not get out the words, decide to try and jot everything you want to say simply as you possibly can. Then move ahead into a simpler section of this article. Alternatively, you can try out opting for a wander, creating a cup of java or using a break up. All of it feels a bit incorrect...
Sometimes, at the process of writing, you will realise you disagree with all two-days-ago youpersonally, and you also don't really rely on the argument you're trying to create. When it is the case, return back to the drawing board. Do not squint on regardless -- a deficiency of conviction will reveal on your essay. Reunite to your strategy, and see whether it's possible to utilize similar stuff however change your accent, and perhaps the strange bit of signs, to create a separate argument. Style
Everyone has their own individual producing model: the may possibly be as flowery and purple, or even scientific as well as guide as you prefer (within reason). However you compose, to find top marks, it really is imperative that you learn how to be exact.
The proverb, "Eggs and oaths are damaged", is a good example of zeugma.
Style-wise there are two poles of wrongness: vagueness, and over-complication. Clearly, every single subject matter has its distinct language, and understanding this will likely soon be crucial, and also sharpen your analysis; nevertheless understand keywords are the pals also! Make sure that you understand the exact meaning of every word you use. But, be certain to know precisely what every single word you are using way, and also think carefully about whether you're employing this within the perfect context -- recall that those is reading your composition will probably understand better compared to meanings of zeugma, stagflation or symbiosis. Last, don't hide behind subject-specific vocabulary: Be sure you're using terms to donate to and build up your essay, and nothing of the leak is lost. The dull material
-- Get good at conventions like footnotingwriting and writing bibliographies. Examiners really do check these! -- Once you've finished, leave the essay for a single day or 2, then re read it. If you can, get someone to proof read for you personally. In this manner, you will stay away from making tons of silly mistakes which sabotage the strain and flow of one's article.

Song of the Week
IT’S A NEW YEAR!!!!!!!
And for some reason, instead of taking a break like any sane company would, a bunch of groups had comebacks that will inevitably be forgotten by the end of next year. This turned out longer than usual (I was being wordy), so I added a cut for your convenience.
Honorable Mentions:
I am so confused by NCT 127′s comeback. The video starts in fake old footage, and then moves to the present. But the fashion doesn’t change. And the title is in 3 languages, but the song only touches on 2. Why is it even labelled in Chinese? We may never know. Musically I really like the chorus and the bridge alone, but I’m not a huge fan of them together. I keep waiting for NCT to define themselves in SM’s lineup, but it really hasn’t happened yet. They seem to fit somewhere near EXO, just a little bit harder. Maybe. I am intrigued but thoroughly confused by Limitless.
All of these older groups are coming back, with music that I just don’t understand. It all references there old stuff to get original fans back, but also tries to be current. And sadly, the 90′s aesthetic in music is not really in right now (with the notable exception of SHINee). Or maybe I just don’t find it interesting. Anyways, S.E.S fell into that trap with Paradise, which stole the drum sample from SHINee’s 1 of 1 and with Remember, which feels stuck in every way except its really nice sound production.
What is with all these idol bands coming out of the wood works? Not that I’m complaining. MAS 0094 is joining the group with their debut(?) Make Some Noise. It is a song I didn’t know I needed. If you took FT Island at their hard rock style, and then added the melody and style of B1A4, you would get this song. I adore it. My one complaint is sadly in the production of the recording I have. The guitar is horrible cut off in the processing, as is almost all of the band sound, making a wall of almost white noise in the chorus. The vocals are great, but everything else feels like it was recorded with no understanding of clipping.
Seventeen has finally gone for BTS’s proven non-vocal chorus in Highlight. I fell more than a little bad that I can’t tell visually that this is Seventeen, but way to go performance team. And I have a feeling this track is an insanely good workout song, maybe a good pump up song, and definitely a killer dance track that will be remixed a bunch. No guarantees that I remember it at all in a month though.
I love me a good R&B vocalist. And Heize has done a great job making a name for herself, so when I see her featuring on something, I’m pretty sure I will at least like it. That is true of DAVII’s Navigation. I like how simple the vibe of the whole track is, without being boring. It feels like something that should play in a record shop while you search through vinyl with a coffee in your other hand.
I never thought I would see the day that a group tried to be a new Infinite, since the originals fit into such a distinct niche. But TopSecret is doing there best with their debut, She. The dancing in the video reminds me of the knife style stuff Infinite has had mastered for years. The music even has some of the same retro styles you hear in a lot of Infinite’s stuff. It’s disconcertingly like looking at the alternate universe Infinite. Where Infinite had to be super cutesy. And have a band concept.
I love AOA when they are mixing addicting dance tracks with sexy vocals and their equally sexy concepts. Good Luck is a great example. So is this years Bing Bing. While not as powerful as last year, it is still a solid track from them. I didn’t like Excuse Me as much, and was bored with it way faster.
You know how I said S.E.S had messed up? Shinhwa gave the perfect example of what you should do. Touch is all sorts of cool. It feels like the stuff way younger groups are putting out in every way except one. There is a confidence and maturity in Shinhwa, one that comes out in their willingness to still take risk 19 years into their career. They all look amazing too, which is just unfair when their youngest is 35, and the hyung line is all 37. Even their music video is effortlessly cool.
Daydream was one of my favorite albums last year. So when I looked at this years schedule for Day6, I was half scared, half excited. Excited for what may be a constant onslaught of killer Day6 tracks. Scared that they may falter halfway through the year, or lose any health they had from overwork. Putting that aside, the first song of the year is out. And it is a banger. I Wait has a really really interesting verse section, a guitar break at the end for the first time with the group (not a particularly interesting one but still) and a chorus that fits into their existing discography well. I can only really describe it as an interesting combination between Western alt. rock, K-pop, and K-Rock. And I may be in love with the combination.
Choosing the winner this week was super hard. I did my listening to almost all of the tracks a day early, and was deliberating between Shinhwa, Day6 and the winner. In the end, the winner went to the song I cannot get out of my head.
I have talked about Korean ballads here a lot, and how important understanding the language is for me with ballads. But once in a blue moon, they get me hard just like they are designed to. Vromance’s I’m Fine did that. Their vocals are absolutely stellar, enough to put some fear in the current ballad kings, BtoB. They aren’t even pushing the top of their ranges (no one is in falsetto unless they are up an extra octave). I would almost comment the sin of putting them on the same level as 2AM (GASP!). And the video had me crying a la the beginning of Up by the end. There are also some really interesting things happening musically into the final chorus that I adore. The live is insane.

Austin Restaurants Where You Can Eat And Drink Outside added to Google Docs
Austin Restaurants Where You Can Eat And Drink Outside
Austin is a city that’s at its best outdoors. We have a world-famous swimming pool, we make up reasons to have music festivals (Eeyore’s Birthday Party should be on your radar), and we congregate anywhere there’s shade to sip cold drinks. And there’s no better way to combat the triple-digit heat and catastrophic traffic than by hanging out on a patio.
But not all of them are created equal. Here are our 21 favorites.
the spots  Radio Coffee & Beer $ $ $ $ Tacos  in  South Austin $$$$ 4208 Manchaca Rd
We’re pretty sure this is the only patio in the world where you can enjoy A++ breakfast tacos (from Veracruz All Natural), nitro cold brew on tap, draft beer, and entertainment ranging from movies to vinyl listening nights to live bluegrass. You can schedule meetings and dates here, use it as a meeting spot for your whole crew, or get some solo work done. It’s our all-time favorite patio hang.
Spider House Patio Bar & Cafe $ $ $ $ Bar Food  in  Campus $$$$ 2908 Fruth St
This enormous, funky patio is a flagbearer for Keep Austin Weird. Spider House is covered with a colorful hodgepodge of steampunky yard furniture that feels like it was created by Tom Waits in a secret side career as a metalworker. Even though it’s in the crosshairs of UT’s campus area, the crowd is always a good mix of people. They serve food, brew coffee, and have plenty of quality local beer on tap, as well as a full bar with affordable prices. Spider House’s patio is never not an enjoyable place to be.
 Licha's Cantina $ $ $ $ Mexican  in  Downtown Austin $$$$ 1306 E 6th St Not
Rated
Yet
This converted old house not only serves some of our favorite Mexican food in Austin - they also have one of the best outdoor areas in which to eat it. The front yard is covered by a giant string-light-covered tree, and lined with charming little tables for sharing bowls of queso fundido and fajitas. If it’s crowded, the mural-covered backyard patio is no slouch either.
Justine's Brasserie $ $ $ $ French  in  Govalle $$$$ 4710 E 5th St 8.4 /10
The French invented neighborhood bistros with prime sidewalk seating (we think), and Justine’s is the Austin version. Inside, this place feels like Paris in Austin; an intimate date night dinner spot. Step onto their patio and the vibe shifts into a see-and-be-seen backyard covered with string lights and picnic tables perfect for having some frites with your Bordeaux. Justine’s is located away from the hubbub of downtown, which makes the entire experience feel more exclusive and better suited for conversation with a group.
 The ABGB $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Sandwiches  in  South Austin $$$$ 1305 W Oltorf St Not
Rated

This is one of the more communal patio situations in town, and they also serve fantastic pizza. It gets crowded, which means parking real estate is dicey, which also means that once you find a spot you will inevitably lounge around and stay a while. They often have live music inside with plenty of room to square dance. Expect to make some new friends here.

Want to quickly find restaurants on the go? Download The Infatuation app.    Easy Tiger $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Cafe/Bakery  in  Downtown Austin $$$$ 709 E 6th St
You’re probably familiar with Easy Tiger’s wizard-like baking skills, as their bread is served everywhere in town. But go beneath the bakery and you’ll find their beer garden with a patio beside Waller Creek. And while that creek itself basically just an even-more-disappointing version of the San Antonio Riverwalk, it does give the patio a feeling of being hidden away in a concrete jungle. Easy Tiger is a cool place to impress an out-of-towner, and definitely our favorite downtown patio. Come for drinks (they have a full bar in addition to beer and wine), and snack on pretzels and sausages when you get hungry (they serve food until 2am).
 Guero's Taco Bar $ $ $ $ Tex-Mex  in  South Congress $$$$ 1412 S Congress Ave 7.7 /10
Over the years, Guero’s has become an Austin postcard-establishment - their solid Tex-Mex and strong margaritas have made it a favorite entry point for out-of-towners who have no idea what Austin is (and just as fun for people who live here). The spot does get crowded, which is when you’ll want to consider stepping outside onto their patio - the only spot in town where you can sip margaritas, eat queso, listen to live music, and people watch, all while sitting in an oak tree-shaded garden facing South Congress.
Hotel Vegas / Volstead Lounge $ $ $ $ East Austin $$$$ 1500 E 6th St
These two veteran bars/music venues have cemented themselves as East 6th fixtures. Part of the reason for their continued success is their enormous shared patio complete with cheap drinks and picnic tables. The interiors are small, hot, and inhospitable for conversation due to very loud music. But once you get outside - especially at night - you’ll have a hard time convincing yourself to go back to the music when there’s so much action (and so much more space available) on the patio.
Hula Hut $ $ $ $ Tex-Mex  in  Lake Austin Blvd $$$$ 3825 Lake Austin Blvd Not
Rated
Yet
This list would be incomplete without a lakeside patio you can drive a boat up to. Hula Hut is another Austin classic that’s been thriving for over 20 years, thanks in large part to its patio that’s literally on Lake Austin. While their Tex-Mex isn’t going to win them any awards, it tastes great once you’ve had a few of their strong cocktails that are as endearingly tacky as the Hawaiian decor.
 Fresa's South First $ $ $ $ Mexican  in  Bouldin $$$$ 1703 South First 8.1 /10
Not to be confused with their mostly to-go-oriented Lamar location, Fresa’s on South First has a spectacular laid-back patio facing Bouldin Creek. Their queso challenges Torchy’s for best in town status, while their chicken is as juicy as the fresh-squeezed margarita you’ll realize you need as soon as you sit down. They also are kid-friendly, and the playscape should keep them occupied while you have another margarita or three.
Yard Bar $ $ $ $ Bar Food  in  Allandale $$$$ 6700 Burnet Rd
Hanging out with dogs is a whole lot cheaper and more fun than therapy, so here’s your chance to do so even if your landlord doesn’t allow pets. The entire “patio” at Yard Bar off Burnet is an enormous fenced-in dog park/playground, with a full bar inside. Sometimes you just need a cocktail after a long day at work - but most other times adding hounds into the mix cures all ails.
 Perla's Seafood and Oyster Bar $ $ $ $ Seafood ,  Raw Bar  in  South Congress $$$$ 1400 S Congress Ave Ste B100 8.1 /10
You’re on South Congress, but looking for something more upscale than Guero’s. You’re looking for Perla’s. Once you get past the inevitable wait, there’s plenty of room to enjoy cocktails, oysters, and some of the finer seafood in town. The sleek patio faces the street, which makes for excellent people watching, as you feel like you have one foot in Austin and one foot in Los Angeles. It’s pricey, but considering this town is nowhere near the origin of the Blue Point Oysters you’re springing for, it’s worth it.
Maggie Svodoba Josephine House $ $ $ $ American  in  Clarksville $$$$ 1601 Waterston Ave Not

If your priorities are twinkly lights and striped straws and the general feeling that you’re in the middle of an Instagram photo, you’ll want to be at Josephine House. This is the place to sip a fancy gin cocktail in a cozy outdoor both while eating the kind of food that tastes as good as it looks in pictures.
 Yellow Jacket Social Club $ $ $ $ American  in  East Austin $$$$ 1700 E 5th St. Not
Rated
Yet
Hidden under a bunch of trees in front of some train tracks on a side street, you’d probably never know Yellow Jacket Social Club was here. This divey spot isn’t just a great place for a low-key hang in the shade - they serve a surprisingly good brunch, with out-of-this-world shrimp and grits. Get the frozen mimosas if you’re looking to start the day off right.
Gourdough's Public House $ $ $ $ American ,  Bar Food  in  South Lamar $$$$ 2700 S Lamar Blvd 8.0 /10
This gourmet doughnut Airstream trailer turned brick-and-mortar is more than just a late-night donut shop. The well-designed ‘public house’ branch of the Gordough’s empire has a full bar and a fantastic backyard patio covered with picnic tables and yard games. This is the spot to hit if you’re with a giant crew that appreciates the finer things in life, like gigantic beer towers paired with donut burgers.
Skylark Lounge $ $ $ $ Bar Food  in  MLK $$$$ 2039 Airport Blvd
Skylark’s recent patio addition is a wonderful place to get some fresh air after dancing to the best live soul music in Austin. It feels like a spacious backyard - nothing especially distinct, but a really comfortable place to hang.
 Shady Grove $ $ $ $ American ,  Bar Food ,  Burgers ,  Tex-Mex ,  Southern  in  Zilker $$$$ 1624 Barton Springs Rd 7.7 /10
An Austin institution located around the corner from The Greenbelt, Zilker Park, and Barton Springs. Shady Grove has live music all summer long, and the menu is a mix of Southwestern diner and Tex-Mex. As the name suggests, their patio is a shady oasis covered with tables and chairs. Unless it’s over 100 degrees, there’s absolutely no reason to be sitting inside here.
 Cherrywood Coffeehouse $ $ $ $ Cafe/Bakery  in  Cherrywood $$$$ 1400 E 38th 1/2 St
Not only do they serve some of the best breakfast tacos in town, but Cherrywood also has a spacious, dog-friendly, tree-covered patio/music venue where you’ll sometimes see the gardener carefully nurturing his potted plants. If this wasn’t clear from our previous sentence, Cherrywood is a highly Austin-y place to have some laid-back time outside.
 Contigo Austin $ $ $ $ American ,  Southern  in  East Austin $$$$ 2027 Anchor Ln 8.4 /10
With its huge patio, high-quality Texas-inspired bar food, and full wine, beer, and cocktail lists, Contigo is a crowd-pleaser. Bring coworkers or any other group when you don’t necessarily want to spend concentrated amounts of time with one person in particular - or a group of people you want to be able to mingle with equally. Come on the earlier side to make sure you can get a table.
 Whisler's $ $ $ $ East Austin $$$$ 1816 E 6th St
This is a far better bar than it is a patio. But when a bar makes some of the best cocktails in town, then you don’t need fancy furniture or twinkly lights. Whisler’s is basically a glorified cement parking lot with tables and chairs within 10 yards of the bar (which is most important here).
 Kitty Cohen's $ $ $ $ East Austin $$$$ 2211 Webberville Rd
This patio’s claim to fame is their small pool for Brooklyn transplants who are just happy to be out of the highly variable Northeastern climate. Otherwise, Kitty Cohen is designed to feel like a Palm Springs house in the 1970s, complete with beachy cocktails and bright blue umbrellas. If you want to feel like you’ve left Austin for a few drinks, come to this spot.

Central + Downtown Los Angeles
This post covers a lot of ground in central and downtown LA, so you might want to check out my Google Map before you head off.
First up is a driving day in and around Central L.A, followed by a walking day and lots of public art in Downtown Los Angeles.
Having a car was so needed. Shout out to Hertz car rental for our GMC Terrain for the whole trip (just over two weeks) from San Fran for just under £500. L.A has 11 locations. Plus Halifax bankers with a MasterCard got a handy little discount this summer. It’s always a good thing to check your inbox :)
Hollywood
Tumblr media
Eat
On the famous Santa Monica Blvd is my possibly my favourite donut ever - Trejo donuts. You cant miss it’s bright pink exterior. The Peanut Butter with a coffee was delicious!
Shop
Visit Amoeba Music - a huge record store. It’s a great place to loose track of time and treat your ears to the sounds of so many favourites and lesser known musicians, be it old or new. It also sells merch and hosts some special gigs so plan ahead.
See
ArcLight Cinemas is one of the favourites along this stretch. I fell in love with its lit up retro exterior at night.
Eat
Below and fairly central on La Brea is République. The Bombalini is insanely good and the coffee and food are excellent. The open plan layout and historic interior styling make you feel like you’ve stepped into a workshop where food is highly respected and a craft. I loved the Pupusa!
Beverly Grove
Eat
To the left of La Brea is Beverly Grove -  a popular shopping haven for small luxury boutiques and the very popular Joans on Third. It’s perfect for picnic treats and coffee but also does a great breakfast burrito too. Sit outside and take in the local neighbourhood. It’s great for a spot of people watching!
Shop
Over the road is Credo Clean Beauty. Perfect for natural beauty. I discovered a local Californian company to boost my night time skin routine. They seem great at celebrating both new and old brands and were able to talk directly to a company when I had a question about plastics and packaging.
Further along is The Button Store. This haberdashers dream comes highly recommended by many and when you step inside, it’s not hard to see why. It’s an incredibly organised treasure trove for anyone looking for something special.
Beverly Hills
Shop & See
The draw of Rodeo Drive from many films led me to discover some famous and unexpected brands. Although it didn’t blow me away like Japan’s luxury stores, it was interesting to see a different side to L.A.
Tumblr media
We were lucky to catch a special Louis Vuitton exhibition detailing some of their well known artistic collaborations. The store had the best interior display and window and I love what they are doing for art and fashion right now.
Of all the exteriors, I really liked & Other Stories building. This minty green art deco-style landmark caught the eye and drew you in.
Of them all, the Taschen bookstore had to be my favourite. The sleek mix of metal and dark wood inside beautifully showcased the quality of their collection of creative books. Some were fantastically big and the store did a great job of celebrating this. It was also geared up to treating us to a special Los Angeles books section.
Downtown Los Angeles
The following day we took the train from Vermont / Santa Monica Station to Civic Center / Grand Park.  For $2 you can get a Transit Access Pass (TAP card) at the machine in the station and add $1.75 for a single trip.
Be prepared for lots of walking. The sun is ever present so a hat, water bottle and fan were packed. It is worth it!
See
Tumblr media
We started the day walking around the Walt Disney Concert Hall and stopped for a moment to read and rest on the rooftop garden. It’s gorgeous from so many angles and I loved how proudly it stood out on the road. Thanks to Frank Gehry for this exciting architecture. I felt energised from this visit.
Beside is The Broad - an exciting contemporary art gallery. I loved the building inside and out.  It’s large perforated appearance is striking and makes the work inside feel extra special.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also loved how the collection peeked out from behind a glass corner in the central stairwell. A real insiders treat.
Tumblr media
On the way out, I couldn’t resist the bookshop. A Keith Haring notebook made it out with me!
Outside, the gallery has the colourful work of Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz Diaz - ‘Couleur Additive’ 2017. His interaction with the crosswalk transforms the area and is a piece of public art that made me smile.
Eat & Drink
For a break, we had really good drinks and snacks outside Otium (just beside). The Crispy potatoes and truffle fries are both savoury deliciousness!
See
For more public art and architecture, walk down the stretch to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Mark Taper Forum - a circular building with distinct architecture and sculpture designed by Welton Becket and Associates on the Bunker Hill section of Downtown L.A. Both stand out and the courtyard between them with fountains are a bit of public space everyone can enjoy.
Eat Drink See
Fairly close by is Grand Central Market. This hub of small stalls is great to wander around and even better for a drink and bite to eat. I loved the neon wall piece inside by Lisa Schulte - filled with symbolic L.A culture icons from illustration by Brendan Donnelly. It celebrates L.A’s long relationship with Neon. Plus, passersby were invited to get involved - for every photo posted with #FrontierWorks, Bulleit will donate to the ongoing restoration project at the Museum of Neon Art.
Art Materials
A side note, for creatives. While I travelling I was working on a bit of embroidery (more on this soon) and found Artist & Craftsman Supply LA (it’s on my Google Map). This store has a huge range of well priced materials - specialist and general, even better than the well known Blick for some things like embroidery hoops. Plus they are a employee-owned company so you are supporting staff by shopping there.
One last thing, If you’re heading North from Downtown late night, one of L.A’s most popular taco spots - TacoZone in Echo Park is only $2 for a taco and almost a rite of passage. Stand and eat until 2am.

How To Choose The Right Fragrance For The Occasion

How To Choose The Right Fragrance For The Occasion
You choose the right shoes for the occasion. The right outfit. Even the right hairstyle. So why should your fragrance be selected with anything less than the same diligence?
Gone are the days when a single bottle was all you needed. Nowadays a man’s top shelf must buckle with an array of wonderfully over-designed bottles if he is to hold any hope of getting on in life.
With a surplus of scents befitting only formal events and others made solely for the casual day-to-day, this is your guide to sniffing out the best for every situation a modern man faces. When it comes to standing out, the nose knows.
At Work
The aim of the nine-to-five slog is to snag the corner office, not whiff like the old leather chair inside it. Any sensible employer would turn their nose up at an over-perfumed staff member whose scent enters the office before them.
So what smells like team spirit? Something light with an aromatic undertone will make the airspace around you fresh, without causing your desk neighbour any headaches. In other words, opt for subtle smells when you’re at the coalface to save yourself getting burned.
Citrus scents are a particularly good choice. However, they do tend to diminish more quickly than others, so keep a bottle or travel atomiser in your bag for a midday top-up.
After Work
Socialising with colleagues (and that includes your boss) is a necessary evil to get on in any industry. But to avoid post-work drinks feeling like groundhog day, it pays to switch up your fragrance when moving from business to pleasure.
Of course, you still want to retain some veneer of professionalism. To do so, opt for something heady and distinctive, which can be achieved by looking for notes such as amber and ambergris. It’s unlikely a colleague will be wearing anything similar.
Or you could play it a little safer with a modern classic like Givenchy Gentleman, which is woody and aromatic, thanks to its heart of patchouli and vetiver, without being so overpowering as to stop anyone from wanting to share your bowling lane.
An Interview
Whether you incorrectly perfumed yourself all the way to a P45 or are simply ready to move onto pastures new, smelling – as well as looking – the business is key when faced with a potential employer.
Unless being interviewed by Google in an airy San Francisco office, you’ll likely be crammed into a cubbyhole of a meeting room, which means that overdoing it with the eau de toilette could gas everyone in the room.
A scent that’s clean and subtle should be your olfactory weapon of choice. An eau fraiche is the weakest of all fragrance compositions (containing just 1-3 per cent essential oils), allowing you to leave a lasting impression but not cause bouts of sneezing over your CV.
Date Night
Your intoxicating personality will do most of the work, we’re sure. But to guarantee a second date, you’ll want to leave a lingering impression in the mind of your companion.
There’s science here. The olfactory memory is the strongest in the human brain. Which, translated, means you want to aim for something your date hasn’t smelled before (particularly on an ex-boyfriend) by picking out unique notes like pomegranate, bamboo and coconut.
Be mindful not to go overboard. Strong fragrances can alter one’s sense of taste and utterly ruin dinner. So where should you spray it? A spritz in each collarbone before getting dressed is enough to have them leaning in for more.
A Dinner Party
If you’re old and wise enough to be attending a dinner party, you should know there are two types of people everyone hates: the self-centred bore and the guy whose fragrance does more talking than all the guests put together.
The challenge here is finding something that has enough muscle to be whiffed over the scent of steaming fish, enough sticking power to save repeat bathroom top-ups, and enough restraint to keep itself to itself.
The solution? Seek out heavy a base like oud that’s been dialled down by lighter notes such as vanilla and rose on top. You’ll have enough back-up to mask wine breath at the end of the night without making people steer well clear at the start.
Off-Duty
The weekend is primetime for letting your mind go into reduced power mode. If what you’re doing doesn’t feel easy, then it’s not right for your weekend. The same goes for your scents.
To save on having to think too much about what you’re spraying on, ensure your grooming cabinet is well stocked with a few of the classics.
Reach for a tried and tested all-rounder from the fragrance hall of fame and you’ll never fail to smell good whether you’re in the pub or out on a walk.
Another Wedding
Once you pass the age of 25, the marriage contagion begins to spread among your friends and family like wildfire. Aside from being an excuse to shine your shoes and button up your best, it’s also a chance to crack out a special scent.
So formal are weddings that it would be remiss not to smell as smart as you look. However, the issue is that most scents have the staying power of a leathered best man.
To go the distance, opt for an eau de parfum. At the opposite end of the spectrum to eau fraiche fragrances, parfums typically hold the highest percentage of essential oils, allowing them to linger until the final slow song comes on at 2am.
Summer Social
If you spend your summer pumping the living daylights out of the same old bottle of musk, you’re doing fragrance wrong. As the days improve in temperament, so too should your fragrance.
Nobody wants to spend a sun-soaked barbecue or session in the beer garden with someone that smells like the inside of a nightclub toilet. So lighten up and evoke the odours of more tropical climes.
Scents that pull on neroli (an oil extracted from the blossoms of the bitter orange tree), as well as notes like Sicilian lemon and jasmine, are essentially a summer holiday in a bottle. Who cares if it’s raining outside?
