#needle phobia journey

Note
could i please have the mercs with someone who has severe trypanophobia, to the point of going into a fight or flight response upon being exposed to needles? sorry if this is dumb or otherwise Bad
Sorry that this took a while!!! 😭 Also, I don't know much about having phobias n stuff so, sorry if I wrote anything wrong
Mercs with an S/o who has severe trypanophobia
Cw: Needles, trypanophobia
Scout
Scout acts like he isn't afraid of needles himself and says they're not that bad, but in reality he has a fear of them too. So, he isn't too confused about his S/o's phobia.
Distracts his S/o by doing tricks and small stunts to get their mind off of the fact that they're getting a shot. Even if it rarely works or doesn't work at all, Scout doesn't give up on his S/o.
If they freak out, Scout freaks out too and there's not a chance either of them calm down. After a single appointment, Scout completely understands just how much his S/o is freaked out by needles. Also, they both go out to get something to eat to put the appointment behind them.
Soldier
Doesn't really understand why his S/o is so afraid of needles, like, not at all. He's seen and experienced way worse than a single, little prick to the skin and he doesn't understand what his S/o finds so scary in it.
Even if Soldier doesn't understand their fear, he still comes to appointments at their request. While he remains non-bothered, his S/o internally worries.
When Soldier actually sees how afraid his S/o is and how they cling to him for dear life, he goes wild and throws away and destroys all needles on sight.
Pyro
Is afraid of needles too, though not as much as their S/o. Pyro doesn't completely freak out, they're just a bit nervous. So when their S/o tells them they have a phobia of needles, they feel very sympathetic.
They try gifting their S/o a plush toy they can hold while getting a shot, maybe something to squeeze or pet while trying to stay calm. Sometimes that plush can be Pyro! They're more than happy to see their S/o overcome their anxiety even a little bit for the better good.
Pyro even tries to motivate their S/o by sucking up their own fear of getting shots and try to show that it's not so bad. Doesn't matter if it actually encourages their S/o or not, they're not forcing them to at all.
Demoman
Not a big fan of needles either. Though it's just a feeling of uneasy-ness and he shies away from the doctor if he needs to get a shot. So, he understands his S/o's fear of needles.
Demo might try to reason with the doctor if there's any way for him to hold his S/o still as they get their shot. It's all for their better health, even though he does feel a bit bad about restraining his S/o.
Demo praises his S/o and lets them know how proud he is of them after an appointment. All he wants to see is his S/o trying to live peacefully with their phobia and even overcome it a tiny bit, so he'll make sure he helps them in that journey.
Heavy
A big, tough man like him can't understand why his S/o is scared of needles which are just quick little pokes in their skin to make them feel better.
Heavy has to hold his S/o in a bear hug every time they go to a doctor's or Medic's office, mainly to catch them if they faint and to hold them still if a fight response gets triggered. They're clinging onto him like their life depends on it.
If his S/o freaks out, Heavy tries to keep them still with his strength, but secretly feels guilty about it. To try to calm them down to endure the prick to their skin, he speaks to them in Russian in a comforting voice to divert their attention.
Engineer
It takes a little while for Engineer to understand his S/o's fear of needles because he's a practical man, but he gets there.
He tries to reason with his S/o, trying to tell them that it's just to make them feel better but he eventually understands it's something more than just a fear.
If he's allowed, he'll hold his S/o's hand to keep them calm when they get a shot. Engie really only understands how bad his S/o's phobia is when he has to handle them as they're hyperventilating and panicking.
Medic
He doesn't know why his S/o freezes up and doesn't respond to him when they stumble into his lab. He stares at them in confusion before realizing what he has on a stool right next to him.
Medic scurries to hide them in a cabinet and welcomes his S/o in. If they've gone into a panicked state, he tries his best to calm them down
If his S/o wants to spend time with him but he's performing a surgery and needs to use a needle, he motions with his hand for his S/o to look away. Though they can still get a bit nervous.
Overall, it's made him dapper up his lab for his S/o to not freak out. Maybe he understands and doesn't understand his S/o's fear of needles at the same time because "It's just a little prick", but he tries, that's what matters.
Sniper
Sniper kind of understands his S/o's fear of needles because he's not the biggest fan of them either. Not to the point of being terrified but more like a slightly displeased feeling of when he needs a shot.
Will come to his S/o's appointments just to make them feel more safe. Sniper can only pull them closer to himself when they grip his forearm.
Awkwardly fumbles when his S/o actually freaks out and tries to calm them down by soothing them and petting their scalp. If he needs to, he will hold his S/o so they can get their shot.
Spy
Spy mostly understands why they're afraid, he's sort of the most understanding too, because he knows phobias can't easy to overcome and can't be controlled at times.
Promises his S/o to give them something nice like chocolates and stuff after an appointment. Basically, if his S/o tries to overcome their anxiety, even if it's just them shaking but not completely freaking out, he congratulates them and praises them that they tried to do something about their phobia.
If his S/o starts to panic because they've been exposed to needles, Spy will be quick to react and will try to calm them down the best way he can. He mainly talks French to them in a soothing voice to try to calm them down and reason with them.

On my laptop BUT Umbrella and Skull for Talesin and Copper plz ovo
OHO! Excellent choices! And since you asked here for them, we're including the Anatole siblings!
🌂 - What genre do they belong in?
Copper: Fantasy-adventure. (Probably a darker fantasy or horror-fantasy as he gets older.)
Talesin: hmmm he's a lot like his dad in that I can see him being in fantasy-adventure like Copper, but probably with more mystery elements when it comes to his journey of self-discovery? I suppose we could also go into deep sea horror if I wanted to really take his character in a darker direction, given his origin.
(and as for the siblings based on the Aristocats kitten trio...)
Marianne "Mari" Anatole: I could see her in either a period romance drama or a modern rom-com!
Toussaint "Tea" Anatole: Feel-good heartwarming comedy is the name of the game, setting is incidental.
Bertrand "Rand" Anatole: Murder mystery or mystery-thriller, I think! Though he could also be interesting in horror!
💀 - Does your OC have any phobias?
Copper: Hard to say? He initially has a deep fear of drowning because he doesn't know how to swim, but he does work to overcome that. The people he loves and treasures coming to harm is another big one.
Talesin: He grows up relatively fearless though I know after he learns the truth of how he was created, he does fear himself for a while. I think his biggest, most secret fear is loneliness. It's so alien to him, he's been surrounded by family and friends with so much love and support all his life, the idea of the antithesis of what he's had all this time is the most frightening monster of all.
Mari: Claustrophobia (fear of tight, enclosed small spaces)
Tea: Trypanophobia (fear of needles)
Rand: He's being stubborn (no surprise, really) and refusing to tell me. He doesn't like people having potential blackmail to use against him. ._.
Also Elena sent me a REALLY good couple of asks and I'm going to be taking my time with that because it's going to be a long one!
Taglist: @tixdixl @inmateofthemind @ramshacklerumble @simons-twsted-children @elenauaurs
@theleechyskrunkly @thehollowwriter @distant-velleity @rainesol (let me know if you want to be added to the taglist for my TWST OCs!)

tomorrow is piercing day!!!
and i'm absolutely bricking it lol.
not because i'm scared of needles or pain or anything like that but just because of going outside.
and i realised yesterday that this is the first time i've actually WANTED to go outside for something that I want to do since early December 2019 when i went to the big Asda at 6am to do some christmas shopping.
any other time i've had to go outside somewhere that isn't my flat is because i've absolutely had to. I had to go to the doctors for covid jabs and I had to go to the dentist or they would've thrown my off the nhs patient list. this is something for me and that's terrifying. there is no other fear factor that blocks out the fear of the outside so my phobia feels exposed?? does that make sense??
i spent last night following the journey on google maps even tho it's a journey i've made countless times in the past because the studio is five minutes from the village where i grew up and is probably a minute from where my sister lives.
i was originally going to get a taxi but my dad is taking me. i told him when i booked that i'm getting my ears pierced again, then slipped in there i'm getting my nose done again. he's not a fan of facial piercings. then i did the whole my body, i do what i want with it and also i'm almost 40 years old, and he just said, 'fair enough, you want a lift?'
anyway wish me luck.

Yandere sorlato with darling with needle phobia? Like they will have a full on panic and cry if they even see one
How would they go about the kidnapping?? 👀
Would they use it against them?
They don’t try to impair your consciousness for the abduction. They want you to be aware as possible so they can gage how much of a fighter you’re gonna be. But once you’re home and safe with them, that’s when they come at you with the needle. They see knocking you out for a few hours as a reward for going through all that, and it also lets them rest for a bit before dealing with your renewed fighting come morning.
If you resisted this with clear signs of a phobia, Sorbet and Gelato would want to know more. They were meticulous in stalking you, noting everything there is to learn about you down to your exact shopping list. They’re surprised to discover something so big about you they didn’t know before.
They’re gonna try and convince you to take the needle anyway because they would rather solve this now than in the future, if drugging you becomes absolutely needed, but ultimately they aren’t going to force you on this occasion. Chloroform doesn’t last as long but is still an option.
Further into the future they probably aren’t going to use it against you massively, but it remains the occasional threat. Mostly the reminder that if you escaped and they had to drag you back, they wouldn’t have any reason this time to keep you awake for the journey. Ultimately, if it does become absolutely necessary to give you an injection to either restrain you or for medical reasons, they’re going to do it. But even if they don’t outright admit it they’ll feel guilty afterwards.

Overcoming Dental Anxiety: Understanding, Coping, and Conquering Fear
Introduction
Dental anxiety is a common but often overlooked issue that affects millions of people worldwide. From a mild unease to severe panic attacks, dental anxiety can manifest in various ways, making routine dental visits a daunting prospect for many individuals. In this article, we'll delve into the roots of dental anxiety, explore coping strategies, and provide insights on overcoming this fear.
Understanding Dental Anxiety
Dental anxiety, also known as dentophobia or odontophobia, is characterized by feelings of fear, nervousness, or unease associated with dental visits or procedures. This anxiety can stem from various factors, including:
Fear of Pain: Past traumatic experiences or anticipation of pain during dental procedures can trigger anxiety.
Loss of Control: Some individuals feel helpless or vulnerable when sitting in the dental chair, leading to heightened anxiety.
Embarrassment: Concerns about the condition of one's teeth, bad breath, or perceived judgment from dental professionals can contribute to anxiety.
Needle Phobia: Fear of needles commonly intersects with dental anxiety, particularly in the context of injections for anesthesia.
Negative Associations: Cultural beliefs, media portrayals, or stories from friends and family members can reinforce negative perceptions of dental care.
Coping Strategies for Dental Anxiety
Fortunately, there are numerous techniques and strategies to help manage dental anxiety effectively:
Open Communication: Establishing clear and open communication with your dentist is crucial. Express your fears and concerns beforehand, allowing the dental team to adapt their approach accordingly.
Gradual Exposure: Gradually exposing oneself to dental environments can desensitize anxiety over time. Start with simple visits for non-invasive procedures and gradually progress to more complex treatments.
Relaxation Techniques: Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or visualization to alleviate anxiety during dental appointments.
Distraction: Bring along headphones to listen to music or podcasts during procedures, or utilize stress balls or fidget toys to distract the mind from anxious thoughts.
Sedation Dentistry: In cases of severe anxiety, sedation options such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or oral sedatives may be recommended to induce a state of relaxation during treatment.
Overcoming Dental Anxiety
While coping strategies can help manage dental anxiety, overcoming it entirely requires patience, persistence, and professional support. Here are some additional steps to consider:
Seek Professional Help: Consider consulting a therapist or psychologist specializing in anxiety disorders. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure therapy have shown efficacy in treating dental anxiety.
Choose a Supportive Dentist: Find a dentist who specializes in treating anxious patients and offers a supportive, empathetic approach to dental care.
Explore Alternative Therapies: Acupuncture, hypnotherapy, or biofeedback techniques may complement traditional anxiety management strategies.
Maintain Oral Health: Regular dental check-ups and preventive care can help prevent dental issues, reducing the frequency of invasive procedures and associated anxiety.
Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge and celebrate small victories along the way. Each successful dental visit builds confidence and reinforces positive associations with oral care.
Conclusion
Dental anxiety is a common yet manageable obstacle that should not prevent individuals from prioritizing their oral health. By understanding the underlying causes, implementing coping strategies, and seeking professional support when needed, it is possible to overcome dental anxiety and reclaim control over one's oral care journey.

Fear To Comfort: Overcoming Dental Anxiety With The Right Dentist
Visiting the dentist is an essential aspect of maintaining good oral health. However, for many individuals, the thought of going to a trusted dentist West Auckland can evoke feelings of fear and anxiety. Dental anxiety is a common issue that affects people of all ages, but the good news is that it can be overcome with the help of the right dentist.
In this article, we will explore the journey from fear to comfort, offering guidance on overcoming dental anxiety and finding a dentist who understands and supports you every step of the way.
Understanding Dental Anxiety
Dental anxiety is more than just feeling nervous about a dental appointment. It can range from mild unease to severe phobia, causing individuals to avoid dental visits altogether, which can lead to neglected oral health. Some common causes of dental anxiety include:
Fear of Pain: The fear of experiencing pain or discomfort during dental procedures is a significant factor contributing to dental anxiety. Past negative experiences or hearing about others' unpleasant dental encounters can intensify this fear.
Feeling of Helplessness or Loss of Control: Sitting in a dental chair and being unable to see what's happening can create a sense of helplessness and loss of control, leading to heightened anxiety.
Sensitive Gag Reflex: Individuals with a sensitive gag reflex may feel anxious about the potential triggers during dental treatments, such as X-rays or impression moulds.
Fear of Needles or Dental Instruments: Some people have a fear of needles or dental instruments, which can escalate their anxiety when faced with dental procedures that involve these tools.

Overcoming Dental Anxiety
If you experience dental anxiety, it's important to address it rather than avoiding dental visits altogether. Here are some strategies to help overcome dental anxiety and find comfort in the dental chair:
Communicate Your Fears and Concerns: Find a dentist West Auckland who prioritises open communication and understands your anxiety. Express your fears and concerns before your appointment so that the dentist can tailor the experience to your needs, providing reassurance and explanations throughout the process.
Seek Distraction Techniques: Many dental practices offer distraction techniques to help patients relax during treatments. These techniques may include providing headphones with soothing music, offering TV screens or virtual reality headsets, or engaging in pleasant conversation with the dental team.
Gradual Exposure and Desensitisation: If your anxiety is severe, consider scheduling a series of shorter appointments to gradually acclimatise yourself to the dental environment. Start with simple procedures and gradually progress to more complex treatments as you build trust and confidence.
Sedation Dentistry: In some cases, sedation dentistry may be recommended to help patients with severe anxiety or phobia. Options may include nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation, or intravenous sedation, depending on the level of anxiety and the complexity of the procedure.
Practice Relaxation Techniques: Before and during your dental visit, practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or visualisation. These techniques can help calm your mind and body, reducing anxiety levels.
Choose a Supportive Dentist: Look for a dentist who specialises in treating anxious patients or has experience in providing gentle and compassionate care. Read reviews, seek recommendations from friends or family, and schedule a consultation to assess their approach to patient comfort.
The Role of the Right Dentist
Finding the right dentist who understands and empathises with your dental anxiety is paramount to your journey from fear to comfort. The right dentist can make a significant difference in your dental experience by:
Creating a Welcoming Environment: A dentist who fosters a warm and welcoming environment can help alleviate anxiety. This includes a friendly and supportive dental team, a comfortable waiting area, and a clean and modern dental office.
Building Trust and Rapport: A dentist who takes the time to build trust and establish rapport with their patients can significantly reduce anxiety. They will listen to your concerns, address your questions, and explain procedures in a clear and empathetic manner.
Offering Gentle and Pain-Free Dentistry: Utilising modern techniques and technology, a skilled dentist can provide gentle and pain-free dentistry. This includes the use of local anaesthesia, numbing gels, and advanced tools to minimise discomfort during procedures.
Providing Patient Education: A dentist who empowers patients through education can help alleviate anxiety. They will explain the purpose and benefits of treatments, discuss alternative options, and provide oral hygiene tips to maintain oral health between visits.
Conclusion
Dental anxiety should not prevent you from receiving the necessary dental care for optimal oral health. By understanding the root causes of your anxiety, seeking the support of the right dentist West Auckland, and employing coping strategies, you can overcome dental anxiety and find comfort in the dental chair. Remember, your dental health is essential, and the right dentist is your ally in maintaining a healthy and beautiful smile. Take the first step towards overcoming dental anxiety today and prioritise your oral health for a lifetime of confident smiles.

MUSE PROFILE: Lake
Tumblr media
Name: Lake
Species: Reflection/Denizen
Pronouns: They/Them
Age: 13
Height: 5′5″
Occupation: Tulip's reflection (formerly)
General alignment: Neutral good
General personality: Resourceful, clever, stubborn, adventurous, open to new ideas,
Family: None
Backstory: Lake was a cracked reflection that had escaped the mirror police, and was granted an exit off of the infinity train after bargaining with the conductor one-one. No longer being bound by the train’s limits, and being free to chose who or what she wants to be.
Being a denizen of the train, Lake really didn’t have much to look forward to while being stuck in their prime counterpart’s reflection. That was until Tulip walked into the chrome car and essentially gave them their one way ticket out of that place. Initially they thought it would be a great idea to just make a break for it and just leave their prime counterpart in the dust, however they didn’t account for the fact that they can’t walk on any surfaces that weren’t reflective. After a bit of a talk with Tulip, Lake decided to trust her to help them get out of the Chrome Car and, after stepping into the reflection of the little mirror on Tulip’s Multi-tool, they were officially free from being stuck in her reflection. Free to have their own opinions, make their own friends, and choose their own path.
Eventually after a big change in appearance, Lake (albeit a little cautiously) set off on their own to explore all that the train may have to offer. Occasionally needing to run from the mirror police in order to prevent from being sanded down into pure dust.
While still being on the run from the Flecks, they met the two companions that would accompany them for the rest of their journey throughout the train. Jesse and Alan Dracula, with Jesse eventually coming back for Lake even after he was granted his exit off the train.  After reflecting Jesse’s number onto their own hand and solving one-one’s little dilemma (alongside killing the last Fleck that was chasing after them.) Lake at long last got the exit ticket that they were so hoping to get. Being bound no longer to the train that was once considered their first “home”.
They now live out in the real world with Jesse and although they can’t experience things the same way he can, they’re still happy to experience it nonetheless.
Extra info: Lake had a phobia of reflective surfaces for the longest time while on the train. To the point that if they saw anything that could be possibly reflective they would either smash it into pieces or spray paint over it to prevent the flecks from tracking them down across train cars.
The little mirror from Tulip’s Multi-tool is still stuck to Lake, they just forgot to take it off after they got off the train.
Because Lake is entirely made of chrome they can’t touch, taste, smell, or feel pain. They’re also extremely heavy due to this and you would need an industrial scale just to weigh them.
Ever since Lake shaved their head on a train car’s wheels, their hair has been made entirely up of needles. Touching their remaining hairs would feel like touching a porcupines backside, or putting your hand on a bed of sewing needles.
Lake prefers experiencing the more mundane things about life instead of just the weird and exciting stuff. They’ve seen enough weird things on the train that the more conventional stuff just interests them a lot more.
Lake has used she/her pronouns before but, they much prefer to use they/them pronouns now that they’re able to choose what they want to be.

I don't know if you remember me, but I submitted an ask ages ago about how Sparklecare was part of my goal timeline for recovering from a (trauma based) medical phobia. I wanted to say thank you again Sparklecare team. I did it! I'm not "cured" but I got my covid shots, and survived an ER visit and quite the medical journey lately - needles, blood and all - and Sparklecare was and is genuinely part of my recovery story. When I started out with therapy a lot of the reasons why I wanted to get better was for scary reasons - be able to get cavities filled so they don't get worse, etc - but Sparklecare was the first thing on my list that made me realize it didn't have to be all scary. I could enjoy things I wanted to even when they have medical trauma in them, and in Sparklecare's case, BECAUSE it has medical trauma in it (and a cast that makes me feel happy and fuzzy in my heart!)
Again it's been forever.... This would have been back in like, 2018 that I sent the ask I think. But it really means a lot to me and I wanted to make sure I shared that weight of how special your art is. Thank you, thank you, thank you. 💖
I can't believe I sent that whole thing and forgot to include that line from one of your recent posts because yes yes yes it's so true. You are more than what happened to you. I hope Sparklecare continues to bring joy to those of us, artists and readers alike, who've been there 💖
thank you so much for the message, it really means a lot. i'm really proud of you for holding on through everything. you've come a really long way since then, and recovery is never easy for anyone. making this story has been a sort of recovery journey for me too, i think it's been really healing for me. i'm glad you can enjoy this comic now, i'm glad it can mean so much to you, and i really hope you and everyone else enjoys the rest of it too.
thank you for reading! 💖

Lee Felix x female reader / 2k words / angst / fluff
Apart of the ‘i’m stuck with a phobia’ series
Warnings: mentions of blood, trauma, needles, fainting
Hemophobia is the extreme fear of seeing blood. Individuals are fearful of getting tests or shots where blood may be involved. This phobia can be very life-threatening if it prevents an individual from going to normal check-ups and important doctor’s appointments.
⊱ ──────────────────────── ⊰
Since you were young, it had always been your dream to follow in your mother’s footsteps in the medical profession since she was a successful doctor. She eventually stepped down when she began to have children and became a nurse practitioner. It wasn’t that you wanted to be a doctor like how your mother was. Still, you wanted to be a nurse to continue in the medical profession in the family. Your family and friends always thought it was a perfect career path for you due to your caring nature, even though, at times, you put others before yourself a bit too much. The adrenaline rush in an emergency setting made you feel alive and alert, always on your feet doing everything and anything you possibly could to help another. Thankfully, after you graduated high school, you qualified for one of the best nursing programs in the country, and you quickly accepted the offer to begin your new adventure.
You knew that once you start this program, you won't be having much social life due to the copious amounts of papers, studying for exams, and long hours in the hospital. Just when you began to get anxious about the program, you met Lee Felix, your saving grace. The two of you met on the first day of your nursing program, asking to sit next to you in class since you looked adorable. As it turned out, your schedules almost completely overlapped. It didn't take the two of you too long to bond at all; actually, it was almost instantaneously. In a matter of a few weeks, he became your solace in life and the one who kept you sane throughout this long and challenging journey.
Felix was shyer at the beginning of your friendship. However, soon, he began to open up and became insanely funny and was also super clingy and cuddly. Truthfully, you didn’t mind one bit since you secretly enjoyed the sweet behavior. Felix was the one who made sure you were balancing out your college life along with a social life. Even on days where you were preparing for exams, he always made sure to pop by for a bit to make sure you’d eat well before joining you on a walk to get some fresh air and sunlight. He always made sure to take care of you, even if it was most minimally. Surprisingly, Felix was very organized when it came to studying, even more, organized than you. He loved to color coordinate his notes and impressive flashcards since he believed it was the most efficient way to learn. To top it off, he knew how much you hated being interrupted in public spaces when you wanted to study outside of your place. So, he’d go ahead and reserve you a private room for a few hours to ensure no interruptions.
Everything was going well with your assignments and volunteer work until you forgot one of the main things nurses or any medical profession came across, drawing blood. The reasoning behind your long-lasting phobia stemmed from your childhood memories when you were younger. One day you were playing outside with your neighbors, and one of them had fallen off the playground and split their head open. You went to help them, but the second you saw the dark blood dripping onto their face, you had immediately passed out from being so shocked. After that, even at the slightest hint of blood in your sight, you'd get nausea and lightheaded, usually passing out from the sudden increase in anxiety. Though, you hoped since you felt so strongly about this profession that you'd be able to overcome this phobia and continue with your life.
"Wait, we have a prac tomorrow? Already?" You froze in your spot from Felix's words, "Didn't we just start? Why are we learning to draw blood already?" You let out a nervous chuckle, resulting in Felix cocking his head to the side out of confusion.
"Did you not listen in class today? The professor mentioned it earlier in the lecture and kind of focused on the topic for the entire class," Felix chuckled at your forgetful behavior.
In all honesty, you had most definitely heard it, but you unconsciously decided to block it out of your mind to help shield yourself from the traumatic thoughts. You hadn't thought you'd have to come face to face with this phobia for a bit longer, at least. It was too soon for you, but it was about time you tried to get it under control if you wanted to continue with a career in this profession. You were going to have to fake it till you made it. You quickly plastered a smile onto your face, "Right. Tomorrow. Okay, hey coffee's on me this time," You changed the subject, which Felix seemed to buy as he cheered out at the thought of free coffee.
Anxiety littered your thoughts as you tried to comprehend how you were going to make it through tomorrow. As you expected, it was a long night. You barely slept a wink and your anxiety was eating you away/. At this rate, you were going to pass out before you'd even see any blood today. As promised, you met with Felix before class, bringing him a coffee along with a chocolate muffin to get through the morning. Felix seemed to pick up on your lack of energy with the way you were acting and how you were picking at your muffin.
"Hey, you good?" Felix asked concern laced in his voice as he examined your facial expressions.
You looked up from your muffin to his brown orbs before forcing out a smile, "Yeah, just didn't sleep too well I guess. I should be okay after this though." Felix didn't buy it, but he let it slide for now and was sure to keep an eye on you throughout the class.
He honestly has never seen you so exhausted like this and he would be sure to talk with you about it after class. As expected, once you made your way inside the lecture room, which was set up like a hospital environment, and the smell along with the sight of the tools immediately made your stomach twist and palms sweat. Your heartbeat quickens, but you did your best to remain calm and took a seat next to Felix as the professor began to speak.
Two hours later, it was time to learn how to efficiently look for the veins, then correctly placing the tourniquet around the arm, and rubbing the alcohol wipe over the accurate area where the needle will be inserted. Felix lets you go first and practice on him, much to your dismay. The idea of needles didn't interest you, you never had a fear of them. Though as soon as the sight of blood came into view, that's when your body reacted before you could even think of what to do. You really must have been an idiot to think this was a suitable job for you.
Felix took note of your shaking hands before he placed his warm, delicate ones on top of yours, "Hey, relax," He whispered, "I know something's wrong since I can read you like a book, and you don’t need to tell me now, but take a deep breath Y/N. Let's just get through this and I'll treat you to a drink later."
You smiled nervously at him before taking a big breath and steadily inserting the needle into his vein. You moved the needle around a little before you nicked the correct spot, and blood began to pour down the long tube. A smile made its way to your lips as you told yourself to remain calm. You gazed up towards Felix, who was smiling brightly at you. Well, that was until you went to remove the needle, which was the incorrect way, and more blood than expected began to escape the small hole on his skin. It wasn't much blood, but in your mind, you thought it was a lot.
"Shit," You mumbled as you collected the cotton balls to place firmly against the wound. However, in your panicked state, your hands were shaking and clammy, and you couldn't think straight, which caused your best friend's attention.
"Hey, It's alright, Y/N. It's a tiny amount of blood," Felix chuckled, trying to calm you down as he saw how panicked you were becoming. His hand went to take hold of the cotton balls from your hands to hold onto his arm.
You looked down at Felix's arm at the trickle of blood that adorned his skin. You felt your breathing becoming complicated, along with your head feeling fuzzy. You could see the way Felix's lips were moving as he placed a band-aid over his arm, yet you couldn't make out a word he was saying.
"Y/N?" Felix asked yet again, though it was as if you were looking straight past him, "Y/N? Can you-," Before he could even finish, you tried to grip onto his shirt as you leaned your body against his, trying to mumble out a few words before fainting, thankfully leaning onto him for support?
A few minutes or so went by before you felt your eyes flutter open as you took in your surroundings, "Lix," You mumbled quietly, needing him as he got up from his seat and made his way towards you.
"Hey, how do you feel? You weren't too good, were you?" He asked softly, feeling bad that he didn’t realize sooner what was going on.
You shook your head to the side before a slight pout formed over your lips, "I thought I was going to be okay, but I guess I was wrong.”
You catch onto Felix's confused state as you thought it was time to talk with him about the issue at hand, "So, I should probably tell you about my small phobia of blood, huh?"
"Small?" He asked with surprise laced in his tone as he gave you a small smile, still very concerned about you.
“Well, what I thought was a small fear, soon turned into a big phobia because of something that happened when I was younger to my neighbor, I always tried to avoid it at all costs because I never wanted it to get this bad. But I guess over time, that’s exactly what happened,” You started to explain to Felix who sat there patiently, hand on yours as he listened to you tell him the events of that day where this fear became about. He didn’t say anything, instead opting for you to finish your explanations before speaking up.
"So, did you think you'd be able to work in the medical field with this kind of phobia, Y/N?" Felix chuckled, which caused you to lightly smack his arm. "Hey! I thought I'd overcome or grow out of it and it wouldn't result in this today," You grinned shyly.
Felix held his hands out for you to take, "I think that after today you’re one step closer to overcoming this phobia. Next time, we'll think of ways to overcome it together and not let it get as far as it did today. Just don’t hide things like this from me from now on, or else I can’t help you.”
"I promise. You're going to help me with that?" You questioned as you took his hand with a smile.
"Of course! We came into this course together and we’ll finish this together. We’re not leaving each other behind after coming this far," He explained as he slowly helped you up and towards the door to leave.
"Wait, where are we going?" You asked, pulling him back to stop while taking hold of your tote bag.
"I promised you a drink didn't I?" He grinned widely, pulling you outside the door this time.
You smiled brightly before letting a small giggle out as you let Felix lead the way to the store down the road. In the few years, you knew Felix and got close to him, you discovered that he was never one to go back on his word. If he made a promise, he would stick by it until it was resolved, there was no backing out of this one. As much as you always tried to avoid this phobia, it was becoming inevitable, something had to be done and your best friend was going to be the one to get you through it.

I’m considering going on T. Which way of taking T has been most effective for the mods? I know that different ways are better for different people but I want to hear peoples experiences before I decide to go on it
Lee says:
The most effective method of T really depends on the person. Maybe your lifestyle is different than mine and you want to do your T once and forget about it for a few months while you go camping; maybe you want to do it daily to minimize hormone fluctuations which can be an issue for some people with certain mental illnesses.
In general, I’d recommend considering the likelihood that you’ll be able to actually be compliant with your HRT treatment with each method knowing yourself and your abilities and so on, consider the practicality, and consider the cost.
1: What method are you able to use?
If you decide to do injections but you have a needle phobia and you avoid doing your shot and go for months without doing it because you’re too anxious, then injections are not going to be the most effective method for you and you should try gel
If you decide to do gel, but you’re not able to consistently apply it every day because you forget or you’re too busy, and you end up only putting it on once or twice a week when you remember, then gel (which requires a daily application) isn’t the best option for you and you should try injections
If you want to do injections but you have motor control issues or other disabilities that mean you can’t hold a syringe and inject yourself safely, and you don’t have reliable access to a caregiver who can do it for you or don’t want to be reliant on someone else, then maybe injections aren’t the best option for you and you should try implantable testosterone pellets
2: What method is best for your particular body?
If you use patches and develop an allergic reaction at the application site, maybe patches aren’t the best option for you and you should switch to gel or injections
If you’re using gel and you don’t experience enough changes and have low T levels, maybe switching to injections is better for you
If you’re on injections and find that having high testosterone levels at the start of the week and low levels at the end of the week/injectable cycle causes mood swings/exacerbates your mental illness/cause PMS-like symptoms from fluctuating hormones, then maybe injections isn’t the best option and switching to gel is better for you. With gel you’ll have more stable T levels that mimic cis men’s levels, and there’ll be a slight high in the morning when you put on the gel and a slight dip at night but overall fewer big swings.
3: What method is most affordable with your insurance?
If your insurance doesn’t cover testosterone gel and you appeal and they agree to cover it but the generic still has a $300/month copay for you, then maybe that is not affordable for your situation and you might end up not being able to pick up your prescription every month because you run out of money and can’t pay for it, so you should do the cheaper injections and pay like $15 per month instead
If you want to have pellets placed, but travelling to the doctor’s office for appointments every 3 months is prohibitively expensive because you can’t afford appointments that often or the office is too far away for you to easily get to without paying a million dollars in uber fares, then maybe pellets aren’t the best option for you
If you want to do injections but want to use an autoinjector instead of your typical syringe and your insurance won’t cover an autoinjector, then maybe you should consider using a typical syringe or switch to another form of T
If you want a longer-lasting injectable form of T that only requires injections every 6 weeks instead of every other week but your insurance doesn’t cover that form, then decide if it’s worth it, etc
I might say that the form of testosterone that was most effective for me personally is weekly subQ injections because I was depressed when I started T and didn’t shower often enough so the gel built up in a gross layer on my skin and didn’t absorb, but if you know that you’re someone who could never stab yourself with a needle on a weekly basis then daily gel is going to be better for you than missing two out of three or four injections every month.
And you don’t necessarily need to stick with the form of T that you start with. Say you start with gel and find it isn’t effective for you. Then you can talk with your testosterone prescriber and raise the dose! If the higher dose works, then great! If it doesn’t work, talk with your testosterone prescriber and switch to shots, or patches, or whatever else you want to try!
It can be a bit of a trial-and-error process to find the right for of medication for you, and it’s pretty typical to switch forms of T at some point on your T journey. So you aren’t necessarily permanently locked into using the form that you started on forever.
There are different pros and cons for each type of T, so there’s no one “best” and most effective way to be on T. How effective it is depends on your body’s reaction and you can’t predict that in advance, you have to find it out as you go along and experiment.
So all things aside, if every form were equally accessible in price and availability and practicality, there still wouldn’t be a universal “best” and most effective option because different people have different bodies.
That being said, most people tend to have good results with injections after finding the right dose so it’s a good place to start if you are comfortable with needles— but some folks are allergic to the carrier oil and need to switch from cypionate to enanthate for example, and there is more than one type of injectable testosterone and more than one way to inject it (intramuscular vs subcutaneous, and even if you choose one type of injection like SubQ there different sites like thigh vs stomach) so even saying “do shots!” leaves you with a lot of choices too, and none are clearly superior, just different.
The various options for testosterone are listed in our Testosterone FAQ, and as always, talk to your healthcare providers about what they recommend for you!

Each year we take a close look at the prompts for Sledgefu Week, for those who may be stuck for ideas or not quite sure about what the prompts could entail. Below the readmore are all seven prompts, as well as a short write-up exploring what they mean and some ideas to help get the creative juices going. Enjoy!!
Sickfic
This is a really popular and well-known fanfic trope that I feel probably needs little explanation, but I’ll write a little bit about it anyway! It essentially covers fic where one character is ill and the other cares for them -- it could encompass any kind of illness at all, (including chronic illnesses) and there’s a lot of room to get creative with it. You can go for angst, hurt/comfort, or fluff: it’s just a really good general prompt that I think works nicely to kick the week off!
It suits for Sledgefu pretty well, considering Snafu’s canon mild hypochondria, as well as the fact that Eugene’s dad is a doctor. It could be fun to lean into it: make Eugene play doctor for an actually-sick Snafu, and it could be just as fun to subvert it! There’s really endless options for canon fic: shrapnel wounds turned bad, heat-sickness, seasickness, illness from bad food or bad water or any kind of tropical disease you can think of (malaria is a big one!). You could make one of them (or both) a medic; you could genderswap them and write the gay field nurse fic this fandom sorely needs. And of course if you choose to branch out into modern AU you can begin to think of what might afflict them outside of a war setting: has Eugene been working too much and come down with a cold? Are they hungover, and need mutual care (and lots of takeout)? A lot of the time sickfic focuses on one character doing the comforting and the other character feeling unwell, but there’s nothing to say they can’t both be feeling shitty! I think we say this every year but there’s really no rules at all, you do whatever you feel inspired to do. With Sickfic, just be mindful to tag anything that others might be affected by eg. vomiting, blood, needles, etc.
Tarot
I feel like Tarot is pretty well-known to the Sledgefu fandom, or at least to those who like to write Snafu or his family a little witchy. In case you just have a vague idea of what Tarot actually is and what its purpose or origins are, I’ll explain it as concisely as I can! Tarot decks started life in Europe as playing cards, but eventually began to be used for divination. It’s made up of four suits, or the Minor Arcana, (Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles) as well as a twenty-two card Major Arcana (the imagery of which you’re probably very familiar with). Commonly, tarot decks and tarot reading is used as a means of communicating with the higher self, deities, or with the universe. They can be used as a way to see the future, answer questions, or to give/receive advice. There are different ways of reading them too, depending on how one lays out the cards: I don’t want to make this too wordy, but if you’re curious I encourage you to check out this site to learn more!
For writers, there’s a lot of places this prompt could take you! Probably the most obvious will be fortune teller fic; a classic. Lean into Snafu’s Louisiana roots and have him telling fortunes in the depths of the French Quarter, or go against the grain and have Eugene reading cards and palms and tea leaves as a practice passed down through his family. Or maybe more casual: modern AU Sledgefu flirting through amateur tarot readings with a deck picked up from a junk shop. If you read Tarot and have a connection to it, you can express that through writing! It’s a pretty open-ended prompt, especially if you consider some of the meanings of the cards; you could even write a story inspired by that! The Hermit: Snafu withdrawing, leaving Eugene on the train to spend the next few months in solitude, working through things. The Moon: Snafu and Eugene hitting a rough patch, hiding things from each other. The opportunities really become endless once you start taking the readings of the cards into account! And for visual artists, this must be such a fun prompt: I feel like it’s so a visually rich, whether you’re re-drawing the cards to encompass Snafu and Eugene within them, or making a collage based around some of the things mentioned above: fortune tellers shops, witches cottages, etc.
Trinket
Every Sledgefu Week we tend to have a couple prompts that are a little more open to interpretation, and this year’s ‘Trinket’ is one of those. It might be difficult to try and think of something to base a whole fic or piece of art around, but we really encourage you to let your imagination run wild! There’s already some great trinkets in the show itself: Eugene’s ring, the lighter that Gunny Haney gave him, Snafu’s stolen gold teeth, or their dog tags. Think of small, special objects that you might have: what imbues them with comfort or meaning? What makes you love them? You could have Eugene giving Snafu his ring, or have Eugene musing over war and death and loss while smoking a cigarette lit by his lighter. If you’re into Modern AUs, how could these objects carry through to modern day? Once you start thinking about it, the ideas start rolling in. Feel free to invent special trinkets for them: or maybe trinkets that they hate and want to get rid of, trinkets that remind them of bad times. Trinkets that remind them of each other, or family, or war. So much meaning can be held in the things we own, and I think it’s such a lovely concept to explore!
Crossover
So this prompt was born from the sheer number of suggestions we had for various movie, TV, and book AUs. We didn’t want to put them all to the poll and risk a lot of you feeling disappointed over the one you wanted not being selected, so thought it’d work best to condense them into a ‘Crossover’ prompt so everyone could do whatever they liked. So this is a very very broad one! It would be impossible for me to really go through the prompt and highlight some things that you could do for it, because you can really do anything you want to! Anything! It encompasses movies, video games, TV, books, musicals... if something tells a story, you can do a crossover. So if there’s ever been a film/book/etc. AU you wanted to do for Sledgefu Week but couldn’t quite get it to match the prompts, now is the time!
Vacation
A pretty self explanatory prompt, and one that I think can appeal to people who prefer canonverse and those who like modern AU too! Do you want to send Snafu and Eugene on the holiday of their dreams, or are they gonna be bickering in a gas station over who gets control of the map? Is Snafu gonna drive across a couple states to surprise Eugene by visiting? Is Eugene gonna do the same? There’s a lot of scenarios you can apply to the backdrop of them vacationing, and a lot of emotional journeys you can take them through! And for the canonverse crowd, you have the extra addition of letting them go have fun on an R&R, or taking a road trip post-war, visiting 1950s Paris... you can really do whatever you like!
Historical
This was another prompt like ‘Crossover’ that came from a lot of various suggestions that all boiled down to a similar thing: different historical events or periods. So like Crossover, I won’t linger too long on it (this post is long enough already) except just to say again: do whatever you’re inspired to do! There’s no rules here, you could even take everyone out of the Pacific and put them over in Germany: give them a different experience of war. In fact, you can do that with any war if you wanted to! Wanna do a M*A*S*H AU but made something else for Crossover? You could do it here! Want to put them in the 1920s? You got it. In the 1850s? Yeehaw, they’re cowboys now. 1969, Summer of Love? 1600s, make Snafu a prince? Literally the world is your oyster!
Horror
Past Sledgefu Week prompts have included things that could come under the horror umbrella (Supernatural, for example) but didn’t necessarily have to be made 'horrific’. For the ‘Horror’ prompt this year, we want to see frightening! Disquieting, uncomfortable; creations that either cross over with existing horror franchises, or lean on horrific things you come up with yourself. Horror movies, or TV shows, or books or podcasts or pieces of art all seek to elicit a sense of fear: this can be done by tapping into common phobias, or nightmares, those things which are universally and almost instinctively scary. We want to see things which lean into that, in whatever way you want to do it!
I’m no horror media expert (not by a long shot) but the opportunities for this prompt are really vast simply because horror has so many subgenres to work with. You could go gothic horror; Dracula, Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights (a personal favourite AU -- Eugene soaked out on the moors, searching for Heathcliff-Snafu? Divine). Or you could go to the opposite end of the spectrum: Jennifer’s Body AU, Final Girl AU -- there’s no set way to do horror, in fact you could even bring horror into canonverse if you don’t like AUs. Think the Terror: some unknown beast lurking beyond the borders of their camp on Pavuvu, or Okinawa. Or you could even take the prompt entirely literally and explore the horrors of war and the toll it takes on them both. Please don’t feel stuck into needing to do Scary: horror is about fear and revulsion and dread, and these feelings don’t necessarily need to come from a haunting! (This is also a prompt ripe for monsterfucking, just FYI).
                                                - - - - - - - - - -
So that’s the prompts for this year! They’re all really really great, and have a lot of potential to make some fantastic stuff :~) And to reiterate something I said right at the start, there are no rules here! I think every year we normally get at least one person unsure whether their idea will be okay for the prompt they’d like to make it for, so I just wanna say here: don’t second-guess yourself! As long as it can be linked back to the prompt in some way or another (can literally be the vaguest way possible) you’ll be absolutely fine. We don’t vet submissions at all, especially not for their content relating to the prompts. All we ask is that you remember to stay respectful in what you’re writing, and when the time comes to post it, you tag and warn appropriately :~)
On the subject of writing respectfully, we’d like to just take a moment to link the document on mindful writing re: race and gender that was made last year. Please take a look at it, even if you read it last year! It’s always good to keep these things at the front of your mind, as fandom is a community sport and we want to keep it fun and safe for everyone involved! So thank you if you’ve made it this far through this whole post, check out the doc, and enjoy the rest of the run-up to Sledgefu Week!

Your stories: Ashleigh's Juvenile Arthritis diagnosis story
In the latest of our 'Your Stories' feature, Ashleigh Clarke shares her Juvenile Arthritis diagnosis journey and talks about the challenges many don't see, including when treatments don't work and overcoming needle phobia. #JIA #arthritis #chronicpain
I was first diagnosed when I was 8 years old. I had noticed that my left knee was swollen. It didn’t improve after keeping an eye on it for a while, so my mum took me to the GP, who sent me for blood tests and an x-ray of my knee. When these results came back, she diagnosed me as having arthritis. I was referred to my local hospital who didn’t have a paediatric rheumatologist, and I was only the…

Hulu New Releases: June 2021
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Hulu’s list of new releases for June 2021 is highlighted by a host of useful library titles and one fascinating original film.
The original film in question is the one that lends its delightful photo of Pierce Brosnan delivering a baby to this post. False Positive stars and was written by Ilana Glazer (Broad City). It sounds like a really fun, creepy time with a synopsis that reads: “After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him, and her own “birth story.” Cool!
Hulu’s other original offerings aren’t too inspiring this month. Only Love, Victor season 2 on June 11 moves the needle much. If you count “FX on Hulu” as Hulu then June 17 sees the arrival of Dave season 2. Dave was one of TV’s best surprises last year and it’s nice to have it back.
After those two, it’s just a bunch of library titles. Thankfully, those library titles are fairly intriguing. Arachnophobia, The Dark Knight, Kick-Ass, and Slumdog Millionaire all premiere on June 1. Willy’s Wonderland, featuring Nic Cage’s battle against animatronic puppets, arrives on June 13.
Here is everything else coming to Hulu this month.
