The Subtweet by Vivek Shraya is a compelling story about two female musicians of color in Canada who connect thanks to social media and become friends. At the time, Neela is a pretentious (sometimes almost out-of-touch), internal, alternative musician, while Rukmini is more of a social media, selfie-taking cover artist. But a leaked album could set their whole friendship ablaze.
This book's language, like Neela, was sometimes annoyingly pretentious. But it was an effective and frustrating story about social media and the way it warps the way we communicate and the way we manage our friendships. On one hand, we think, why won't they just talk to each other? But the truth is that in today's world we are susceptible to instagram messages and liking their photos, subtweeting and counting retweets. Too often we hesitate to text someone directly, or we worry about being perceived as too eager, or we hide our jealousy by not sharing our admiration. Plus, how does social media mess with how we engage with and consume art, or measure our art's value, particularly in communities that already have a harder time reaching the masses? When it seems like it's a constant competition for attention?
I found Shraya's craft choices really compelling—the way she brings in 1st person POV to represent real-life breaking through the social media confusion, or the way one character drops out of the story the moment her social media presence disappears. Shraya encourages us to look harshly at social media, and consider who we're tweeting for and try harder to interrogate what stories we get only over social media.
Content warnings for racism, misogyny.

Captain Saissano M'Zahl (Art thanks to https://instagram.com/sammyoliart?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=)
Name: Saissano M'Zahl
Race: Caitain Female
Position: Commanding Officer, USS Vermont (NCC-64802)
Birthday: February 28, 2345 (37)
Sounds like: Carmen Sandiego from the Netflix series
Backstory: Saissano was raised on Earth by her god-parents (Marc Fuller, a chef and Steve Fuller, a history teacher) in the Boston area after her birth parents were killed in a shuttle accident.  She was socially awkward as a child, and had trouble making many friends, although she remains very close to her two best friends.  She displayed an aptitude for science as a child, enjoying exploring the beaches and parks around her home a lot.
She displayed an altitude for gardening early on, enjoying helping Papa-Marc in his garden.  She read about plants a lot as well.
She applied to Starfleet Academy in the science track, and graduated with honors.
She continued her stories as well while serving, eventually achieving her PhD in Botany.
Description: Saissano is shorter than average, with dark brown fur with light tan on her nose and tip of her tail.  She is somewhat pudgy, and has white hair she usually wears in a mohawk style eschewing the traditional mane look that most female caitains tend to prefer.  She has a lock of hair dyed red along the front.
Personality: She is unconventional with her command, having a fairly casual approach and not standing on ceremony too often.   She loves puns (if she can make her entire senior staff groan, it was a good day).
She likes keeping plants, and has several decorating her ready room, as well as pictures that Emily gives her.
She also loves cooking, renovating the captains suite to have a kitchen area so she can make dinner for the family.
Random Facts about Saissano M’Zahl
-Favorite color is green
-She has done some black ops work in the past.  No one would suspect it looking at her, but she maintains the level of training she had for CQC even when captain, usually practicing in the holodeck.
- Her readyroom has in it, among other things
1) A bonsai tree near the window.
2) A model of the USS Vermont that Jason and Chee gifted to her
3) Several potted plants
4) Any piece of art Emily makes for her (is a very proud mom)
5) Her doctorate in Botany from Tufts University
6) A couple family pictures (her and Neela's wedding, her graduation with her dads, and one of all of them at a Christmas party)
- Even as captain, she makes time for twice weekly calls to her parents (both now retired).
- Her favorite comfort food is mac and cheese tossed with buffalo chicken pieces and jalapeno.
- While on the bridge, usually has a latte of some kind in a mug.
- Her passion for botany was ignites when her dads took her to visit a botanical garden while on a family vacation.
- She loves both of her dads equally, but feels slightly closer to Daddy-Marc, her father who is the chef.
- Papa-Steve, who is a history teacher, helped a lot with her schooling
- Interacting with other Caitains can be awkward for her, as she was mainly raised by humans on earth.  Her overall body language is definitely human, and while she does speak caitain, it's with an obvious accent and stilted cadence.
- Loved playing outside with her friends.
- Was usually the pitcher when playing baseball after school (Has a wicked curve ball)
- Is very much a morning person.  She loves being able to be alone with her thoughts before starting everything.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift is an anomaly in the franchise. Even if you watch it in the “right” order, (which is between Fast and Furious 6… and its mid-credit scene), this feels like a movie that technically fits in the franchise rather than being a satisfying entry.
17-year-old Sean (Lucas Black) gets kicked out of his mother’s home after his latest racing stunt. Sent to Tokyo to live with his father, he becomes fascinated with Tokyo’s signature racing style – drifting. Under the tutelage of Han (Sung Kang) and with the help of his friend Twinkie (Bow Wow) this newcomer might have what it takes to become the DK (Drift King) and win the heart of the prettiest girl in school, Neela (Nathalie Kelley).
To understand Tokyo Drift, we must travel back to 2006. At this point, the Fast and Furious series was without Vin Diesel and directionless. While Sung Kang’s Han was retroactively added to the "family" later on, there are no recurring actors here. If you recast the role and excised a cameo at the very end, you’d think this was a pale imitation of the series rather than a fully-endorsed third chapter. It begins in high school with the sorriest excuse for a teenager in recent memory. You can practically see Lucas Black shaving his beard between takes. There’s no way, NO WAY he’s a teen but the film reminds us numerous times that he’s a minor. I know 2 Fast 2 Furious was dumb, but don’t expect us to be dumb for enjoying it! Not helping are the flat performances. Sung Kang has charisma. Everyone else is running on fumes. They’re either (Bow Wow), or wooden enough to be confused with talking logs.
This is a terrible sequel which ever way you look at it. The stakes are much lower than in Fast and Furious 6. They’re even lower than in 2 Fast 2 Furious, which makes it hard to care about anything. Even with the possible threat of violence and death from a high-speed car crash, this is a high school drama on wheels. When Sean gets schooled at a drifting race by pro drifter Takashi (Brian Tee), you're not surprised." Aww nuts! I guess I won’t impress that girl I like" - the one non-Asian girl in the school, by the way - and "Uh oh! Turns out she’s involved with the very same guy who beat me! What does she even see in him?"
If you’re watching the series in order, you can have fun with Tokyo Drift. Dumb as the plot may be, those Japanese ladies shaking their behinds in front of the even hotter cars is what you came to see. When those rides are in motion and performing those crazy stunts - the kind you’d only dream of - you better grab some napkins to wipe the drool from your chin. What makes those moves particularly spectacular is that unlike the kind of nonsense we're seeing in the franchise nowadays, you could theoretically do what these people are doing. There’s something about seeing something kinda-sorta attainable that resonates.
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift is largely composed of cool car stunts and missed opportunities with a big heaping’ helping of dumb on top. One can’t help but feel strange seeing an American kid travel to Tokyo and become prolific at the art of drifting, particularly in a series that's become so multicultural. No need to delve on that thought too much - no one involved did. Not even director Justin Lin, who’s since gone on to do much bigger and better things. Tokyo Drift is the kind of movie you wind up including in your collection if you like the series but would never watch if it weren’t for a crucial plot development about 2/3 of the way through. We all grew up listening to and strongly believing in the very famous proverb — ‘Rome was not built in a day’. But Dr. Neela Vishnu has proved to the world that with great perseverance, hard work and strong will to do something great not only for oneself but for many others one can achieve great heights.

ER characters as high school teachers
Ooh, okay. I'm going to keep it set in the 90s, so here we go:
1. Kerry is the Vice Principal because of course she is. She started as the AP Chemistry teacher a few years back and went for the job as soon as it became available. It is no secret she is after Principal Anspaugh's job once he retires, but she does a good job of pretending she's not. Supposedly, her parents were teachers at the school many years ago and, while they were both well loved, there is some disappointment that she seems to have inherited her Physics teacher mother's strict (but fair) demeanor as opposed to the goofiness of her Calculus teacher father.
2. Carter is the English teacher that everybody loves. When he starts, he's fresh out of college, so he's only a few years older than the seniors. His classroom is right next to Mr. Benton, who teaches History. Mr. Benton is thoroughly unimpressed with Mr. Carter's antics (he refuses to refer to him just as 'Carter') but he has a quiet respect and possibly even friendship when Carter proves he is a lot more mature and worldly than he seems.
3. Doug teaches PE and has a not-so-secret crush on Carol, the school nurse. He personally escorts every student to the nurse's office when necessary and often times even when it isn't. But just as it's no secret amongst the teachers that they have dated before and Doug messed things up, they can't deny that he seems to have gotten serious about improving his behavior and doing things right should Carol give him another chance.
4. Mark and Susan have neighboring classrooms on the Science hallway. Though they are best friends, there was some animosity when Mark supported the hiring of Kerry a few years back. Susan, who teaches regular Chemistry, had to deal with Kerry correcting and checking on her the first year they worked together. The tension between them turned to begrudging friendship, which eventually turned to romance when Kerry got promoted and no longer had teaching duties. Susan returned the "favor" of Mark incidentally setting her and Kerry up by actively setting him up with the new French teacher (who is actually from the UK).
5. Jeanie is the Guidance Counselor and is sought out for advice both from the students as well as the staff. She is patient and gentle, but is not afraid to stand up and advocate for herself and others. Her guidance is less on which college or profession students should pursue, but making sure that they are taken care of and getting their needs met.
And I know that's five but here are the others that came to me off the top of my head: Chuny (Spanish), Haleh (Choir), Neela (Orchestra), Luka (Geography), Kim (Psychology), Romano (Art)

Hey! Wikathon na! I’ve started reading Relocations by Karen Tongson, about a third through now, but I had to take a little detour through Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir like I said I would. I’ve finished reading HtN but I’m not quite done experiencing it, so I’ll probably pick Relocations back up tomorrow.
But here’s what I read in July! What’s a segue?
1. Haikyu!! Volume 44 and 45 by Haruichi Furudate
A chance event triggered Shouyou Hinata’s love for volleyball. His club had no members, but somehow persevered and finally made it into its very first and final regular match of middle school, where it was steamrolled by Tobio Kageyama, a superstar player known as “King of the Court.”
Vowing revenge, Hinata applied to the Karasuno High School volleyball club… only to come face-to-face with his hated rival, Kageyama!
And with those two volumes, Haikyū has ended. I’m really glad that my cousin got me to catch up to the series because being a part of the sheer joy and love that’s poured out the fandom these past few months has been refreshing to my spirit. I enjoyed the way Furudate brought the series to its conclusion, by giving all the characters a future and room to grow. I hope to hear more from him in the upcoming years.
  2. Looking for Group by Alexis Hall
I read Looking for Group because I was reading up on Alexis Hall in anticipation of Boyfriend Material, which I will talk about later, and saw the synopsis:
So, yeah, I play Heroes of Legend, y’know, the MMO. I’m not like obsessed or addicted or anything. It’s just a game. Anyway, there was this girl in my guild who I really liked because she was funny and nerdy and a great healer. Of course, my mates thought it was hilarious I was into someone I’d met online. And they thought it was even more hilarious when she turned out to be a boy IRL. But the joke’s on them because I still really like him.
And now that we’re together, it’s going pretty well. Except sometimes I think Kit—that’s his name, sorry I didn’t mention that—spends way too much time in HoL. I know he has friends in the guild, but he has me now, and my friends, and everyone knows people you meet online aren’t real. I mean. Not Kit. Kit’s real. Obviously.
Oh, I’m Drew, by the way. This is sort of my story. About how I messed up some stuff and figured out some stuff. And fell in love and stuff.
And I knew that I had to read it. Immediately.
I enjoyed it way too much. The characters were adorable, the conflict was done well, the geeky gamer wrapper was AMAZING and the author never dropped the ball on integrating the online game into the narrative. It was very readable and I enjoyed the atmosphere of the book immensely. I also may have spent a heady week or so thinking of playing WoW, but I avoided that temptation. Made me miss uni too, and the way my friends and I would spend countless hours with each other.
  3. Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall
Wanted: One (fake) boyfriend Practically perfect in every way
Luc O’Donnell is tangentially–and reluctantly–famous. His rock star parents split when he was young, and the father he’s never met spent the next twenty years cruising in and out of rehab. Now that his dad’s making a comeback, Luc’s back in the public eye, and one compromising photo is enough to ruin everything.
To clean up his image, Luc has to find a nice, normal relationship…and Oliver Blackwood is as nice and normal as they come. He’s a barrister, an ethical vegetarian, and he’s never inspired a moment of scandal in his life. In other words: perfect boyfriend material. Unfortunately apart from being gay, single, and really, really in need of a date for a big event, Luc and Oliver have nothing in common. So they strike a deal to be publicity-friendly (fake) boyfriends until the dust has settled. Then they can go their separate ways and pretend it never happened.
But the thing about fake-dating is that it can feel a lot like real-dating. And that’s when you get used to someone. Start falling for them. Don’t ever want to let them go.
I came into this book with high expectations after Looking for Group, and my expectations were mostly met. The few issues I had were ultimately negligible, probably cultural differences or conventions of a genre that I’m not familiar with. The characters were strong, and I found the book funny. I know it sounds as though I’m damning it with faint praise, so I’ll say it plainly: it was an enjoyable read and I was totally invested in the romance. I think it’ll make a really good film as well.
4. The Subtweet by Vivek Shraya
Everyone talks about falling in love, but falling in friendship can be just as captivating. When Neela Devaki’s song is covered by internet-famous artist Rukmini, the two musicians meet and a transformative friendship begins. But as Rukmini’s star rises and Neela’s stagnates, jealousy and self-doubt creep in. With a single tweet, their friendship implodes, one career is destroyed, and the two women find themselves at the center of an internet firestorm.
Celebrated multidisciplinary artist Vivek Shraya’s second novel is a stirring examination of making art in the modern era, a love letter to brown women, an authentic glimpse into the music industry, and a nuanced exploration of the promise and peril of being seen.
If you’re a millennial and if you’ve ever had complicated friendships, this book will ring really true for most of it, I think. I kept wincing at the characters’ actions and “mistakes”, recognising them as things I or my friends have done, but there are portions of the story that I found inaccessible because Neela, the main character, just seems really opaque even when they’re the ones speaking. The music Shraya made as a companion to the book slaps and can be found here.
  5. Empowered 11 by Adam Warren
Costumed crimefighter Empowered finds herself the desperate prey of a maniacal supervillain whose godlike powers have turned an entire city of suprahumans against her.
Not good! Outnumbered and under siege, aided only by a hero’s ghost, can Emp survive the relentless onslaught long enough to free her enslaved teammates and loved ones, or is this–*gulp*–The End?
From comics overlord Adam Warren comes Empowered, the acclaimed sexy superhero comedy–except when it isn’t, as in this volume’s no-nonsense, wall-to-wall brawl guaranteed to bring tears to the eye and fists to the face!
Warren’s tying up a lot of loose ends and answering a lot of questions and I’m wondering if that means Empowered‘s ending soon. I haven’t seen any info regarding this, even though the words “The End” are right there in the summary, because comic books always lean on the whole the hero could die! thing, and more often than not they never do. But Emp has come so far in the past 11 volumes, and I think that she’s ready to confront a lot of the stuff that Warren’s only hinted at in the past. Most of Empowered is about how Emp deals with failure and how she rises above it, and recently it’s become about how other people have failed her, rather than how she has failed, and how she deserves better. I’m worried about her, but at least we are another volume’s worth of evidence for the Emp/Thugboy/Ninjette OT3.
  6. Sex and Vanity by Kevin Kwan
The iconic author of the bestselling phenomenon Crazy Rich Asians returns with a glittering tale of love and longing as a young woman finds herself torn between two worlds–the WASP establishment of her father’s family and George Zao, a man she is desperately trying to avoid falling in love with.
On her very first morning on the jewel-like island of Capri, Lucie Churchill sets eyes on George Zao and she instantly can’t stand him. She can’t stand it when he gallantly offers to trade hotel rooms with her so that she can have the view of the Tyrrhenian Sea, she can’t stand that he knows more about Curzio Malaparte than she does, and she really can’t stand it when he kisses her in the darkness of the ancient ruins of a Roman villa and they are caught by her snobbish, disapproving cousin, Charlotte. “Your mother is Chinese so it’s no surprise you’d be attracted to someone like him,” Charlotte teases. Daughter of an American-born-Chinese mother and blue-blooded New York father, Lucie has always sublimated the Asian side of herself in favor of the white side, and she adamantly denies having feelings for George. But several years later, when George unexpectedly appears in East Hampton where Lucie is weekending with her new fiancé, Lucie finds herself drawn to George again. Soon, Lucy is spinning a web of deceit that involves her family, her fiancé, the co-op board of her Fifth Avenue apartment, and ultimately herself as she tries mightily to deny George entry into her world–and her heart. Moving between summer playgrounds of privilege, peppered with decadent food and extravagant fashion, Sex and Vanity is a truly modern love story, a daring homage to A Room with a View, and a brilliantly funny comedy of manners set between two cultures.
This was the third romance novel I read in July, and that’s honestly the highest concentration of romance novel I’ve ever had in my life. I know that I’m supposed to find romance novels like super kilig and stuff, but so far I am just very anxious for romance novel protagonists all the time. I think that the whole thing about the romance novels I have read is that they’re mostly about how deeply anxious people learn how to allow themselves to be loved and that is tough! I wanted to protect Lucie all the time! I was Invested in her Welfare, and I don’t think I cared about Rachel Chu from Crazy Rich Asians half as much, even if you condensed all my attachment from the entire trilogy. Also, small spoiler, there is a hint that Sex and Vanity is in the same universe as Crazy Rich Asians, which I think is awesome.
  6. Trust Exercise by Susan Choi
Pulitzer Finalist Susan Choi’s narrative-upending novel about what happens when a first love between high school students is interrupted by the attentions of a charismatic teacher
In an American suburb in the early 1980s, students at a highly competitive performing arts high school struggle and thrive in a rarified bubble, ambitiously pursuing music, movement, Shakespeare, and, particularly, their acting classes. When within this striving “Brotherhood of the Arts,” two freshmen, David and Sarah, fall headlong into love, their passion does not go unnoticed—or untoyed with—by anyone, especially not by their charismatic acting teacher, Mr. Kingsley.
The outside world of family life and economic status, of academic pressure and of their future adult lives, fails to penetrate this school’s walls—until it does, in a shocking spiral of events that catapults the action forward in time and flips the premise upside-down. What the reader believes to have happened to David and Sarah and their friends is not entirely true—though it’s not false, either. It takes until the book’s stunning coda for the final piece of the puzzle to fall into place—revealing truths that will resonate long after the final sentence.
As captivating and tender as it is surprising, Trust Exercise will incite heated conversations about fiction and truth, friendships and loyalties, and will leave readers with wiser understandings of the true capacities of adolescents and of the powers and responsibilities of adults.
This is a book I could not stop reading and I felt gross after I finished it. I think that I enjoyed it and that the narrative flips were well-done and it was engaging, but Choi writes teenage trauma in 3D, and you can smell her scumbag characters. Very good will never read again unless looking to feel bad.
  Re-read:
Temeraire: His Majesty’s Dragon, Throne of Jade, Black Powder War, andEmpire of Ivory by Naomi Novik
Aerial combat brings a thrilling new dimension to the Napoleonic Wars as valiant warriors ride mighty fighting dragons, bred for size or speed. When HMS Reliant captures a French frigate and seizes the precious cargo, an unhatched dragon egg, fate sweeps Captain Will Laurence from his seafaring life into an uncertain future – and an unexpected kinship with a most extraordinary creature. Thrust into the rarified world of the Aerial Corps as master of the dragon Temeraire, he will face a crash course in the daring tactics of airborne battle. For as France’s own dragon-borne forces rally to breach British soil in Bonaparte’s boldest gambit, Laurence and Temeraire must soar into their own baptism of fire.
I started re-reading it because I wanted to introduce it to my girlfriend, and I outpaced her very quickly, and selfishly. She’s still at the beginning fourth of Throne of Jade, and I feel like I blinked and gulped down four of the books in quick succession. I had to stop myself after Empire, in a very belated effort to sync up to my gf’s progress. The series is amazing, and I don’t know if I’ll ever read one like Temeraire again. Being able to revisit it should be enough, really, because every time I do it’s as though I’m caught up in a strong and wonderful wind that fills me up with delight and awe. Novik’s starting a new series this September, and I hope it’s just as good.
That’s it for July! I’m probably going to do two books at a time for my Wikathon posts, just to keep things fresh and current, so keep a weather eye out for those posts!
July, next verse, same as the first Hey! Wikathon na! I've started reading Relocations by Karen Tongson, about a third through now, but I had to take a little detour through…

Favorite color is green
She has done some black ops work in the past.  No one would suspect it looking at her, but she maintains the level of training she had for CQC even when captain, usually practicing in the holodeck.
Her readyroom has in it, among other things
A Bonsai tree near the window.
A model of the USS Vermont that Jason and Chee gifted to her
Several potted plants
Any piece of art Emily makes for her (is a very proud mom)
Her doctorate in Botany from Tufts University
A couple family pictures (her and Neela's wedding, her graduation with her dads, and one of all of them at a Christmas party)
Even as captain, she makes time for twice weekly calls to her parents (both now retired).
Favorite comfort food is max and cheese tossed with buffalo chicken pieces and jalapeno.
While on the bridge, usually has a latte of some kind in a mug.
Her passion for botany was ignites when her dads took her to visit a botanical garden while on a family vacation.
She loves both of them equally, but feels slightly closer to Daddy-Marc, her father who is the chef.
Papa-Steve, who is a history teacher, helped a lot with her schooling
Interacting with other Caitains can be awkward for her, as she was mainly raised by humans on earth.  Her overall body language is definitely human, and while she does speak caitain, it's with an obvious accent and stilted cadence.
Loved playing outside with her friends.
Was usually the pitcher when playing baseball after school (Has a wicked curve ball)
Is very much a morning person.  She loves being able to be alone with her thoughts before starting everything.

Writer Questionnaire
Internet hugs to the super talented @eluari for remembering that I exist, even though I’ve not been providing much evidence of the fact lately!
Short stories, novels, or poems?
I’ve written (or at least started!) all three, but I have a bad habit of not beginning a project unless I can see the path to the end, which usually limits me to shorts, or long-shorts/novellas at most.  Usually.  There was this one time when a whole novel plot sprang fully formed from my head… I’m still working on The Anti-Agathics War, I swear!
What genre do you prefer reading?
If I had to pick just one, I’d say SF, but I’m also fond of crime stories, thrillers, and Victorian novels.
What genre do you prefer writing?
Again, probably science fiction if I had to pick just the one, although examples abound of how you can tell almost any kind of story within SF… come to think of it, maybe that’s why I like it so much!
Are you a planner or a write-as-I-go kind of person?
A bit betwixt and between, really: I’ve not had a lot of luck with those writing exercises where you just start writing anything and try and bootstrap your way up to an idea, but on the other hand once I’ve had an idea I don’t need to do a lot of planning to run with it.  This does vary with length, though: I do have a skeleton for TAAW—one or two sentences per chapter, then sometimes divvying up chapters into scenes—whereas I can generally write a short story straight off the back of the idea for it.
What music do you listen to while writing?
Either something instrumental or something with lyrics I know really really well, so the words don’t distract me.  When I’m writing Mass Effect fanfic, as often as not I’ll put the game soundtrack on, since it’s one of the best things about Mass Effect, and has no distracting words!
Fave books/movies/tv shows?
Books: I love Lois McMaster Bujold’s Miles Vorkosigan novels: so much that I can’t pick just one, it has to be the whole series!  I’m also very fond of Wilkie Collins, with my favourites probably being Man and Wife, and the short story collection The Queen of Hearts, although his better-known novels, like The Woman in White or The Moonstone, are great too.  I also likes me some Isaac Asimov, particularly The Caves of Steel.
Movies: My absolute favourite is The Guard (2011).  Thanks to flickchart.com (which I recommend as an excellent waste of any superfluous time you may have hanging around!) I have a top 20, which you can check out at the link if you’re so inclined.
TV Shows: Breaking Bad absolutely deserves the hype, and I’ll always have a sentimental fondness for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, because it’s the Trek series I grew up with.
Any current WIPs?
The Anti-Agathics War is my main ongoing project.  I’m in the midst of the first of two chapters that form the climax of the piece, and I’m trying not to spook myself by angsting over whether I can live up to notes in my chapter plan like “Neela makes an awesome speech”!
I also have another Scene from the Life of Phil Shepard about two-thirds done, and generally I feel like I should keep adding to my Mass Effect fic output until I’ve gone from Phil’s parents meeting and deciding to move to Mindoir, all the way to Terri and Nezzy’s and li’l Ashley’s turn to save the galaxy!
If someone were to make a cartoon out of you, what would your standard outfit be?
Haha, probably chinos and an Oxford shirt.  I'd make up for it with wacky and memorable dialogue.  Hopefully.
Do you like incorporating people you actually know into your writing?
Really no. This was actually one of the things that killed a previous project: I tried joining the hallowed tradition of writing weird and wonderful events set in a university town and lab very much like the one I used to work at, but when I got to writing my viewpoint character meeting a bunch of grad students and post-docs very much like my real-life friends at the time, I found it incredibly skeevy.  Guess I’ll stick to aliens and space marines…
Are you kill-happy with characters?
Well, I did kill off Tali’Zorah, even though she’s one of my favourite canon characters, but no, on the whole I probably err the other way, on the side of keeping my character-babies happy!
Coffee or tea while writing?
No thanks!
Slow or fast writer?
Fast when I actually get down to it, which is at such infrequent intervals that, on average, glacially slow.
Where/who/what do you find inspiration from?
Well, obviously as a fanfic writer I’m inspired by my source material, but more generally my writing tends to owe a lot to whatever I’ve been reading most recently.  My saving grace, in that regard, if I have one, is that usually I know what source I’m riffing on when I do it, so I can turn it into a comment/reference/tribute to some source or other, rather than a plagiarism.
Most fave book cliche? Least fave book cliche?
OK, I’ll admit it: I like the typical Victorian/Edwardian male author’s conception of romance, where the hero loses his heart to the heroine on usually rather less than a paragraph’s-worth of acquaintance, and then suffers agonies of denial and self-doubt for chapter after chapter (in intervals of the plot moving itself along) until finally she admits that she quite likes him too!  I have to add a quote here, because it made me laugh:
'I say again that you are a foolish Robin,' said she, resting her cheek against my shoulder. 'You think your goose is a swan. But go on thinking it, and she will be as near a swan as she can manage, or failing that, a very faithful, affectionate goose.'
I don’t know about least fave, but one cliché I’ve been getting a bit impatient with lately is the one where the protagonist’s parent/mentor-figure dies at the most timely possible moment for the protag to step up and show that they can handle shizz on their own.  The man behind the curtain is so apparent in some of these that I wonder if the author just had really overbearing parents of their own, so that they can’t imagine any way a person could fully grow up without the olds getting killed off.
Fave scenes to write?
Fluffy home and family scenes always feel very self-indulgent, but they seem to go down well.  One of the perks of being a fanfic author, I guess!
Most productive time of day for writing?
This varies so much that I think the only honest answer is “any time when I don’t have something else I ought to be doing!”
Reason for writing?
Oh, some combination of “Liara is best waifu” and “BIOWARE U DUN GOOFED!”, probably…
I declare Omni-Tag!  If you see this and want to play, thou art subject to entagment!

books in july (part 1)
Or, I go off on one unneccessarily about Zadie Smith
Last year or so I had a little Zadie Smith thing. I read NW and was pretty blown away, and realized that for one reason or another Smith had completely passed me by, and it might be time to fix that. So I dived in, but ended up hitting my head on The Autograph Man. What put me off this was its complete and utter fixation on the male psyche. It's a book about boys, and about men, and I, a gay woman, have exceedingly limited amounts of patience for books that are pretty much only about boys and about men. So, though I could see that there was some wonderfully artful writing, I really didn't care, because, if I remember rightly, it failed the Bechdel.
So, but anyway, not entirely deterred but perhaps a little bit so, I had a crack at On Beauty. And here I completely lost my patience, because I can't actually be fucked at all with campus novels, especially not ones that glory in the entrenched middle class intellectualism of successful academics of the previous generation (i.e. those who could actually afford to buy houses of reasonable sizes in locations of convenience, those who would probably be a right pain in the arse in departmental meetings etc). Apparently I only got as far as chapter 7 before giving up.
So it was only after a long long time then, and two bad experiences, that I finally got round to reading White Teeth.
This book. Bloody hell, how does someone who's twenty three or twenty four write a book like this? A book of this scope and range and complexity? Which touches on so many different kinds of world view, which has things to say about religion and science and can evoke a sense of half a dozen or more different historical moments? How is that even possible?
The book is about fate and chance and destiny, and nature and nurture, what we might be genetically programmed to be and what we are or might become through environment and circumstance, about coincidence and accident and the way in which that might relate in the telling of a story to narrative contrivance. It's clever, its playing on this theme, but it's also a bit heavy handed. (I can envisage the writing of lots of very worthy student essays on 'the theme of fate' which unpack the different ways it's riffed on in the book, but I can't see that they'd actually go anywhere all that interesting in the end. Though maybe that's my complete lack of imagination, so.)
But, the thing about this book is that for all its precocious brilliance, for all of its cleverness, for all of its laugh out loud moment (I have disgraced myself in that way on public transport several times in the last few days), there’s something about this book that nags at me.
And it's the same thing that I banged my head on with The Autograph Man.
Despite being written by a twenty three or twenty four year old woman, this is a book that's about men, and mainly about middle aged men at that. There are a handful of really interesting female characters: Hortense, and Clara, and Alsana, and Alsana's lesbian Niece-of-Shame Neela, and Irie. But the novel is not really interested in these (Afro-caribbean and Bangladeshi) female characters.
What it's more interested in is in the stories of men; more than that, for all of its multi-ethnic complexity, it is a middle-aged white man whose actions book-end the novel.
One of the things that I found really weird about the focus on men is this: in order to set a certain chain of narrative events in motion, early-ish, one of the middle-aged male characters falls in lust, and consequently spends a lot of time masturbating.
And part of me's like 'how on earth, how on earth, why on earth does a twenty three or twenty four year old woman get to writing about a middle aged man masturbating?'. And part of me knows exactly why it is. Because literary fiction is about men; is about men and their penises; and from (at least) Leopold Bloom wanking on the beach onwards, is often about men wanking. If you want to write serious fiction, then, you write about men; if you want to be part of the tradition, you write about men wanking. That's how you fit in.
To come at this another way, the late 90s - when Smith was writing the novel - was the post-Bridget Jones era when Chick lit was *the* pejorative term that any (female) aspiring literary novelist might want to avoid. Then, to write about women was, by default, to write chick lit. To write about women, or to write about women's desires was not to write literature. Bridget's desires are no sorrier than Samad's masturbatory longings in White Teeth, but they were deemed to be culturally of a lesser value because she is a woman.
And so, for a young novelist writing in the late 90s, if you want to be a literary novelist, then you don't write about women. You write about men. You show you can play the game. You show that you’re good at the game by writing about men wanking. You're already taking a risk by writing about multi-ethnic societies; why chance it by focusing on women too?
Well, I don't know if any of this is what actually happened, but it's what, looking at the books, feels like could have happened. It's the only way I can really make sense of White Teeth and Autograph Man. And it worked: writing about men enabled Smith to establish herself as a serious literary writer. A couple of years after White Teeth was published it was on TIME's list of the 100 best books published after 1923; it's there in a male dominated list chosen by male critics alongside Roth's wank-fest Portnoy's Complaint and Miller's Tropic of Cancer and that suggests to me that it's played the game and it's done it well (so well that the TIME review mentions no female characters at all...)
Anyway anyway anyway. The reason that I liked NW so much is because it is a novel which focuses on women at least as much as men. It's as if Smith has thrown off the shackles of the male dominated literary canon in which she was educated and the male dominated literary environment in which she first started as a writer. It feels like she has established herself, and she is now no longer constrained by trying to make sure she is taken seriously.
Look, I don't know if this new female-focused direction is where she was always trying to head, or it's where she's just ended up now, but what she's writing now is so much more the kind of thing that I want to read than is the stuff that she was writing c. 2002. And, well, basically, that makes me very excited to go and get myself a copy of Swing Time.
