I went to see the "Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution" premiere at Anime-Expo!
Hey, everyone! I just returned from Anime-Expo where I was lucky enough to've seen the world premiere of the 22nd Pokemon film, Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution. Wanted to share some of my experiences on it!
I'll start with some information about the event, before going into details on the movie itself. First of all, this was (as far as I understand) the very first time any Japanese-language with English-subtitled Pokemon animation has been officially (and legally) released in North America (and possibly outside of Japan in general?) so I wanted to make sure I attended this pretty momentous occasion. The event itself was handled very well by the staff and there was a great bilingual host who oversaw the whole thing and really hyped up the audience. After the film screening was finished, the three related guests of honor, Kunihiko Yuyama (co-animation director), Motonori Sakakibara, (co-animation director) and Rica Matsumoto (Japanese voice actress of Satoshi/Ash) were brought to the stage to answer a few prepared questions and audience questions. Afterward, Rica Matsumoto performed "Mezase Pokemon Master" live for the audience, which was an absolute treat. Finally, after the reveal of Armored Mewtwo's upcoming appearance in Pokemon Go, we took a "family photo" with a mascot Pikachu making an appearance! The whole thing was a total blast.
Some key points involving the Q&A session:
Rica Matsumoto was in particular very excited to visit LA, especially because she had worked on the Japanese dub for Beverly Hills 90210 and got to visit the real location after wanting to for so long! In addition, she was so taken aback by the audience's enthusiasm for "Satoshi", knowing how they were far more familiar with "Ash", but felt a strong connection to them through the character and Pokemon in general. The two animation co-directors Mr. Sakakibara and Mr. Yuyama shared similar comments, being blown away by the audience's emotional reaction. The screening also gave them major nostalgic flashbacks to first working on the original over 20 years ago. They were also so grateful.
I was fortunate enough to be chosen to ask the first of the three audience questions. First, I thanked them for giving us the opportunity to see this film in its original language with subtitles, as this was a tremendous honor to begin with. After mentioning that the American fandom was very appreciative for the English dubbed version of the TV series and movies, I asked if they would be able to give us any other future opportunities to see ANY other Japanese-language Pokemon animation down the line. Mr. Yuyama said they have plans, with Rica Matsumoto following with "Count on it!!" Nothing further than that, but definitely a good sign!
The next question from the audience asked about a trailer featuring footage involving what appeared to be an older version of Misty, why it was cut and what its involvement was to the movie's early stages of development. Mr. Yuyama simply responded with (paraphrasing, here) "While that was meant to show the image of an adult, the character in question was not actually an older version of Misty. The haircut is very similar though, I can see why you would make that mistake!". Rica Matsumoto adds (again, paraphrasing) "It just goes show that there's so many pretty girls in Pokemon, it's easy to mistake them for each other sometimes!" (Personal note: obviously this is sort of 'dodging the actual question', but it's likely they either weren't allowed to go into detail as to what that early trailer was all about, or possibly forgot about the details since it had been so long ago.)
The final audience question asked about what led to the decision to re-do the original film with CG animation. Mr. Sakakibara mentioned that they had wanted to do a CG Animated Pokemon film for a long time, but thanks to the collaboration with the 3D animation studio they worked with (I've forgotten the studio's name unfortunately, sorry!) they were able to finally make it happen. They chose Mewtwo Strikes Back as the experiment piece in order to try pushing the original character animation even further with the expressiveness and emotion.
I'm sure fans of her know this already, but Rica Matsumoto is an absolute ROCK STAR on stage. She loved teasing the audience and getting them amped up, commanding us to get louder and louder! "When I say 'Pokemon', you say 'Getto da ze!'" was a real highlight. To her, "Mezase Pokemon Master" is THE defining Pokemon song.
Next, I'll talk about the film itself. To those of you who don't want to be potentially spoiled on some of the differences between this and the original movie, skip this part!
The subtitle track for the film used all of the official English names of all characters, including the humans, Pokemon creatures, attack names, locations and even the nicknames of the guest characters' starters ("Bruteroot" and "Shellshocker"). For the most part, the translation was very close to the original Japanese dialogue, but there were definitely a few liberties taken at times. Team Rocket's motto was changed to reflect the English adaptation ("Prepare for trouble and make it double" etc.) along with referring to Ash/Satoshi as "Twerp" (instead of "JARI-BOY!"). There was also a very obvious 'joke' on the translator's part involving a new scene where Brock/Takeshi hits on Neesha/Sweet, proclaiming something about his "jelly donuts" (ending in the ol' Misty-dragging-him-away-by-the-ear gag). As this scene had completely new dialogue, I wouldn't be able to cross-check whatever the 100% accurate translation would be off-hand. A couple other liberties taken (in a way), were that certain lines throughout the movie were word-for-word 'translated' as lines from the original English dub of Pokemon: The First Movie. Thankfully these were rare, but one that definitely sticks out was the "I see now that the circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant. It is what you DO with the gift of life, that determines who you are." at the film's climax. Lastly, Mewtwo's words asking "Was I created by God?" and the scientists' response, were adapted in the subtitles as "Was I created by nature?". (Personal note: Likely this was to avoid flat-out religious references.)
The film begins with Dr. Fuji and his crew retrieving the Mew fossil from the ancient ruins. The "Birth of Mewtwo" sequence involving Amber/Ai is NOT included in this version of the story; the following scene leads directly into Mewtwo's awakening in the tube, to which the movie plays out as you remember it.
Dr. Fuji's laboratory is tremendously redesigned, but the same events transpire.
Mewtwo's armor is, as you've noticed, also fully re-designed. We see many re-directed (in terms of cinematography) scenes from the sequence of his servitude to Giovanni/Sakaki, including Gary/Shigeru's from-behind cameo. The main element of difference in the armor's usage is, just before blowing up the Team Rocket base upon defying Giovanni, it transforms into a binding 'prison' sort of state, to keep Mewtwo confined if he ever fought back...of course, he breaks it easily and flies off, just as before.
The first sequence where we see Ash, Misty/Kasumi and Brock starts a little earlier than in the original, showing Ash more excited and offering to help set up the table for lunch. It then cuts to slightly later where he's tired and slumped over the table. The Pirate Trainer "Raymond" appears again (still with all his glorious Engrish), now with a slight redesign involving bigger hair and the theme song battle sequence plays out. Worth noting, during the 3-on-1 against Pikachu, his Golem is replaced with a Drowzee. (Personal note: Likely to circumvent the "Thunderbolt should be ineffective against a Ground-type" argument.) We also see glimpses of Mewtwo and the mind-controlled Nurse Joy viewing the battle. Just before Dragonite shows up to deliver the invitation, we also see a bit of the gang's other Pokemon used in the movie: Vulpix, Psyduck, Squirtle, Bulbasaur and Charizard, eating Pokemon food.
LOTS more trainers in the dock scene. The pier master Miranda/Voyager actually speaks of Wingulls showing signs of how bad the storm is, warning everyone again. We see a few more trainers attempt to travel to New Island, including one who tries Surfing on their Kingler and another who is carried by their Scyther...neither of them make it, along with whoever tried flying with their Fearow like in the original. RIP.
The Vikings-the-mostly-live-in-Minnesota are replaced with an equally-funny costume theme of the Team Rocket trio as some tourist-trap sailors utilizing a Lapras-shaped ferry service. Brock comments on how conveniently they showed up and they all get on. We then get a very Disneyland 3D Attraction-style sequence of the two trios riding through the storm before it crashes and Misty sends out Staryu to try and save the day. Another extended sequence of Ash, Misty and Brock clinging for dear life to Staryu plays out, including a really gorgeous orchestral arrangement of...the Sun & Moon Wild Pokemon Battle theme, of all things!
Ash and the others meet the other guest trainers. This is where the short added scene of Brock hitting on Neesha is added.
In general, while the grand majority of the things that happen in each scene are the same as they are in the original, a lot of the animation is expanded upon and really pushed in terms of expressiveness. Often this makes them longer than how they were before, but it's definitely paced out properly to fit with the adjustments they made.
The battle arena sequence plays out and all 3 of the battles between Venusaur, Blastoise and Charizard Vs. their super-clones are extended with new fight choreography and additional attack exchanges, including with later-added techniques like Energy Ball and Leaf Storm. This scene also features a completely new background music track from the one used in the original film (later used quite a bit in the anime).
The sequence of Mewtwo capturing all of the humans' Pokemon plays out, also with new background music as opposed to the original. A few new shots of the trainers trying to guard their Pokemon from being captured are added.
After the super-clones emerge, Mew appears to save Ash from being splattered against a wall, the Pokemon and their clones brutally beat each other, now with new sweeping camera angles and new music instead of the original.
When Ash rejoins Misty and Brock after climbing down from the castle, a few bits of dialogue are slightly played around with, but leads to the same untimely demise. Some new DBZ-esque glow effects are applied to when Ash is struck by the two psychic blasts and his turned-to-stone state is a bit more like crystal. Pikachu trying to Thundershock Ash back to life lingers a bit more, to show the desperation in Pikachu's attempt. When the other Pokemon begin shedding their tears, their actual sounds aren't heard and the scene is silent minus the background music.
The memory erasure happens yet again, sending everyone back to the docks. From just after Ash sees Mew flying in the sky, commenting on it, up through Team Rocket's sign-off on the now-abandoned New Island, the orchestral arrangement of the Pokemon Red & Blue Credits theme plays. For the movie credits, we're treated to a new remix of "Kaze to Isshi Ni" (featuring Shokotan) along with some 2D paintings of Ash, Misty and Brock traveling. One shows a flock of Wingull near the dock area! At the end, we see Mewtwo and the clones flying off to what appears to be Mount Quena from the "Mewtwo Returns" TV special.
Finally, as is always the case, a very short teaser of the "Pokemon 2020" film, showing a 2D-animated Pikachu in the style of the Sun & Moon series.
There might have been some things I missed, but that's everything I could recount! If you have any other questions, I'll try and answer them as best as I can. To anyone else who was there for the screening, feel free to add anything else you like! Overall, highly recommend folks who enjoyed the original Mewtwo Strikes Back movie to go see this when the English version comes out!

“Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution” English Voice Cast
Tumblr media
Several voice actors have been added to the English dub roster for the upcoming CG remake Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution (2019) according to IMDb. As of this writing, the English language version’s cast is as follows:
Ash Ketchum..........Sarah Natochenny
Pikachu..........Ikue Ōtani
Misty, Jessie, Bulbasaur, Togepi, Psyduck and Squirtle..........Michele Knotz
Brock..........Bill Rogers
James, Meowth and Fergus..........James Carter Cathcart
Neesha..........Lisa Ortiz
Nurse Joy..........Suzy Myers Jackson
Mew..........Kōichi Yamadera
This roster is still missing quite a few key roles. Mewtwo’s English voice actor remains undeclared. Dr. Fuji, Giovanni and the Pokemon trainer Corey are all undeclared. Perhaps it’s worth noting that Jay Goede (credited as Phillip Bartlett) voices both Mewtwo and Dr. Fuji in the original English dub of Mewtwo Strikes Back (1998). Ted Lewis (often credited as Ed Paul) voices Giovanni and Corey in the original dub. It remains to be seen if they will make a return to these roles or if other voice actors will do the same.

Medea Saw Pokemon: I Choose You
Tumblr media
As you all should know by now, I am indeed a Pokemon fan. And have seen nearly any and all Pokemon episodes, specials, and movies up to this date. And that includes making sure my ass is in the movie theaters to see a Pokemon movie on the big screen. I did it for the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and whatever number the Victini movie was. So seeing this movie was a definite must. And just my luck it came out on a Sunday (my usual day off from both school and work).
Being the ever so anxious fan, I arrived in San Francisco an hour early. Guess I got lucky with public transit. No worries, the theater is allowing people to come in early. And when I entered, they were playing Pokemon Generations.
Um...why? Okay, I understand that you want us to have the feeling of Kanto. But the movie we’re about to watch involves Ash and Pikachu. Not (DOTDOTDOT) Red. But luckily, it was only the first 3 episodes of Generations.
Tumblr media
And I can’t say no to seeing Lorelei. Her and her happy tats were on the big screen. And that’s a big plus in my book.
Aside from that was an AMV (I’m calling it that) to the tune of the first OP song featuring footage of the past 19 movies. And of course advertising the first 52 episodes being available on Blu-ray.
So the movie begins a little bit like the first episode. Except we now know the trainers battling. They’re the ones from the first movie.
Tumblr media
You member? Well their names are Neesha and Corey.
The two on the right. Not the other dude. They were on the screen fighting as Ash stayed up late watching in anticipation for the next day as he’s going to become a pokemon trainer.
Well a lot like the first episode, dude oversleeps and breaks his alarm clock, causing him to be totally late to Professor Oak’s and run around town in his pajamas. When he got there, yep, all the pokemon (Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle) are gone.
We saw the back of Gary’s head. And that’s all we see of him. Hope you enjoyed that Gary fans.
But as a shock, we actually saw an image of the other two Pallet trainers. We still don’t have names, but they look like Marina (from the episode Bye Bye Psyduck) and Tierno (from Pokemon XY). I’m not saying they’re them, I’m just saying they look like them.
Tumblr media
So Ash gets Pikachu.
Usual shit, shock, walk, try to catch Pidgey, fail, hit Spearow, flock of Spearow come attacking, Ash and Pikachu are beat-up, get in the pokeball, no, Ash makes declaration to Spearow, Pikachu attacks, sky clears, enter Ho-oh.
And then Ash receives the Rainbow Wing from Ho-oh.
Which I am pretty sure is the reason why Ash never ages. I’m pretty sure Ho-oh’s Rainbow Wings are the fountain of youth in this universe.
AND THEN WE GET THE OPENING! It’s a lot like the video that the Pokemon Company has been showing all week with the footage of Ash and Pikachu. Except they played quite a bit of the song and even see footage of past movies like Lugia and Slowking from the second movie, Lickylicky and Torterra from the 10th movie, and a few backgrounds from the Victini movie.
Now for the rest of the movie that is going to go down a much different route. Be prepared. I’m not holding back. So spoiler warning. This is your one and only warning. GTFO if you don’t want to see...
So Ash goes about by doing some similar things including capturing a Caterpie and battling gym leaders. Well the only gym leader he battled was Erika of Celadon City.
Tumblr media
Yeah, pretty much dressed like this usual attire. And I am pretty certain that she is NOT voiced by original voice, Leah Applebaum.
And to add it off, this is Ash’s 3rd gym battle. Who were the other gym leaders he beat?
Oh well, Ash ends up at a Pokemon Center where he actually calls his mother. And boy is she mad. She’s been calling all over Kanto to make sure her baby is okay. Then Delia mentions Ash being like his father.
...
...It took so much of my energy to stop myself from yelling in the theater, “WHO IS HIS FATHER?” Dammit Delia!
Team Rocket’s there...and they do nothing.
But he soon hangs up on his momma when he learns that a legendary pokemon is prancing around. It’s Entei from the Johto region. So Ash starts running around trying to see if he can battle it. But not before running into our new female, Verity.
Tumblr media
She comes from Twinleaf in Sinnoh. And has a Piplup. And thank the fuck Christ it isn’t as annoying as Dawn’s. So I’m not praying it gets hit by a Draco Meteor. She wants to battle Entei too and they both fight over it until they end up in a world of trouble with a rogue Onix. Luckily Ash saves the day by being his usual reckless self.
Then they meet the other kid lurking around in the Pokemon Center earlier.
Tumblr media
Sorrel from Veilstone in Sinnoh. THIS DUDE COMES FROM THE SAME TOWN AS PAUL AND CONWAY. SOMEONE GIVE ME MORE TO GO ON! Anyways, he leaves because a storm is coming.
While Ash and Verity are running to shelter, they see a Charman...oh fuck, I know where this is going!
Tumblr media
Yeah, Charmander...the stray pokemon. Well we’re about to meet the douche that ditched it on a rock. Well...who knows? He could be a little better than Dami...
And he kicked Charmander.
Yeah, I fucking hate you now.
Tumblr media
Nope. I have no likeness, compassion, or anything for Cross. He could cure cancer, kick Donald Trump in the testicles, and bring peace in the middle east, and I will still hate his fucking guts.
So Ash and Verity save the little Charmander by hiding in a cave. Surprise, it’s the same one Sorrel is hiding in. He ends up saving Charmander with some medicine, and Ash nurses him like a baby throughout the night.
This night in the cave is cold and so the trainers want to put the pokemon back in the pokeballs. Well...Pikachu hates pokeballs and still refuses to go in. And with that Verity and Sorrel’s pokemon don’t want to go either.
We learn a little more about these two mystery characters. Sorrel wants to become a Pokemon Professor and meet rare legendaries on his journey. And Verity has a mother that’s a very powerful trainer.
But wait, there’s more! There’s a scene where everyone else is sleeping and Verity is going through her photos and stops at one of her...mother?
Tumblr media
Wait, wait, wait! I know this chick has Cynthia’s long hair and it looks so much like her...but I can’t remember, does she have an Empoleon in the games.
Fuck it, her mother’s Cynthia, I guess.
And we learn that Sorrel once had a cute little Luxray that watched over him when he was a tyke. And then one day he got hurt in a snowstorm. And Luxray shielded him until help came.
And the Luxray froze to death.
Tumblr media
Dammit movie, you’re trying to break me. But I’m not going down that easy! BUT FUCK, YOU HAD TO SHOW LUXRAY SMILING EVEN IN DEATH! HOW FUCKED UP ARE YOU PEOPLE?!
Retelling of Ho-oh tale, Burned Tower, the three legendary doggies, moving on...
Ash, Verity, and Sorrel survive the night. And Ash ends up catching Charmander.
Entei sighting.
Caterpie evolves.
Verity sees Suicune.
Charmander evolves.
Marshadow stalks.
Team Rocket does nothing.
Ash wins several battles.
Here comes Kicky McDoucheCross. He battles Ash and Charmeleon. Cross uses his JOHN CENNNNNNNNAAAA (Incineroar). And much like the Ash we all know and love, he uses a not fully-evolved pokemon against a much powerful evolved pokemon. And loses.
And much like Ash, he ends up brooding after losing. You know how those go. Ash has many of these moments like when he lost to Gary and Paul and Wulfric and Richie and Brawly and TOO MANY TO FUCKING COUNT!
So he ends up having a pretty bad mood swing and taking his anger out on Verity and Sorrel. And even Pikachu when even he disagrees. And then Ash said something I NEVER thought he would ever say.
“I should have chosen Squirtle or Bulbasaur.”
OW. DAMMIT MOVIE. OW. Nope...no tears. No tears Medea, fight it!
So Ash is alone and falls to sleep. All the while his rainbow wing starts to taint (as it does if the person holding it has a tainted heart). Ash wakes up in...a normal world?
WHAT?!
There’s no pokemon. He’s going to school. Like a regular kid...
NO WAY!
OH MY GOD, AGATHA IS TEACHING AND PROFESSOR OAK IS OUTSIDE AND IN CHARGE.
Tumblr media
Pokemon...have you been tracking me and my story Romance 101. Granted, it’s been around for over 10 years...But that’s so OH MY GOD!
Thankfully this world dies when Ash remembers Pikachu’s name. And not a moment too soon. Jesus “Tap Dancing” Christ. No more Pokemon in School shit! Ash wakes up, he’s sorry for snapping, the feather is back to being all rainbowy. We’re off to a mountain to see Ho-oh.
But then...
Pink Butterfree. FUCK!
Tumblr media
Stop trying to make me cry, movie.
Yeah, Ash’s Butterfree saves the Pink Butterfree from a Fearow. They do courtship dance. Butterfree must go with his ho on the go and leave Ash. They fly away. Ash cries.
Phew...no tears. Okay movie, I’m done with you trying to kill me with feels. You’re worse than a Key Animation anime.
We see Raikou.
Okay, back to journey to the special mountain. They meet an old coot named Banji who’s been a Ho-oh enthusiast for the last 20 years. Ash is ready to be the one to take the feather to the top and summon Ho-oh.
And then Crossfucker comes AND RUINS EVERYTHING! Oh he totally did. Ash and Cross battle and thankfully the results were different from last time as Charmeleon evolved into Charizard and beat Cross and his JOHN CENNNNNNAAAAAA!
But FuckaCross doesn’t take losing well and said he saw Ho-oh once too. But he wasn’t blessed with a feather. So he takes Ash’s feather. And it becomes tainted. And Marshadow appears and just makes shit worse as he gets the pokemon from the area to fight everyone.
This was intense. Like 1st movie intense. There was strangling, biting, and explosions of all kinds!
And this just totally wrecks Ash and Pikachu. Overkill. So once again, Ash is telling Pikachu to get in the fucking pokeball and stand there as these powerful pokemon unleash their attacks on him. Pikachu refuses and ACTUALLY SPEAKS?!
Tumblr media
IT SPOKE.
IT FUCKING SPOKE.
IT WANTS TO BE WITH ASH. THAT’S WHY IT REFUSES TO GO IN THE BALL.
Tumblr media
And just like the first movie Ash brushes with death. Except he dissipates leaving Pikachu sobbing into Ash’s hat.
ALMOST...You almost got me movie!
Ash returns from purgatory.
And here comes Ho-oh to calm everyone down. And Ash finally gets to battle with Ho-oh.
Except we don’t see it. We just know they go back to the Pokemon Center and he mentions battling Ho-oh.
Well it’s time to go on. Verity’s gonna go home to Mama Cynthia. Sorrel is going to search for the legendary birds Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos. And Ash continues his journey with Pikachu.
Then the ending credits. We see Brock. We see Misty.
OKAY POKEMON, LISTEN UP!
I’m fed the fuck up with this shit. Every single solitary time I have hopes of seeing Tracey Sketchit, you guys fuck it up for me. Like the line cuts off when Oak brings him to the phone or he’s away with the Waterflower Slut-Brigade, or fuck if I know. Because he sure as fuck wasn’t there in those two Kanto episodes of Sun and Moon. If you fuckers don’t show my anime husband in the next five seconds Imma quit this whole...
Tumblr media
OH MY GOD!
AM I SEEING THINGS?
Tumblr media
A MOMENT LIKE THIS
SOME PEOPLE WAIT A LIFETIME
FOR A MOMENT LIKE THIS
FOR TRACEY TO FUCKING SHOW UP
OHHHHHHH I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING TO ME
GLALIE-LUJAH! PRAISE ARCEUS! HOT DIGGITY DAFFODILS! TRACEY SKETCHIT! MY LIFE IS FUCKING COMPLETE! HIM. THERE. ON THE BIG SCREEN.
THEY REMEMBERED YOU. I’M SO HAPPY I COULD CRY.
I’M CRYING OF HAPPINESS! I’M CRYING OF HAPPY TEARS!
Tumblr media
NO, FUCK YOU ROBBERT LOGGIA GIF!
TRACEY WAS ON THE BIG SCREEN! THIS NEVER HAPPENS. NOT SINCE MOVIE 4. HE HASN’T BEEN SEEN SINCE 2013. NOW, HERE HE IS!
*inhales*
Okay, so aside from that we also see May, Max, Dawn, Iris, Dento-fruit, Clemont, Bonnie, and Blushy McIdiot...whoops I mean Serena. We see some pokeballs (and a Voltorb) in the credits. Sorrel and Verity for a sec. Team Rocket...again with the nothing.
The End.
Phew...this movie. GO SEE IT. Yes, Gen “Wunners” I’m talking to you. Look, I know you’re sad that this retelling of Ash’s beginning doesn’t have Misty and Brock. But I’m begging you to just look past that imperfection and actually WATCH the movie. I’m almost upset at the fact that the movie theater I went to was nearly empty during the screening. I saw more people at the Victini showing than this. And this movie is so much better than the Victini.
You know what? For years, I’ve always imagined how Pokemon would EVER end. And if it did, I would always imagine it with Ho-oh, Pikachu actually speaking, and Ash either dying or brink of death. And this movie shocked me and gave me all three. I’m at a complete loss of words. I was so hooked on this movie.
The one miss for this movie goes to Team Rocket. Ash never sees them. They literally do nothing. And other than Meowth, we don’t see another pokemon from them except in the credits where we see Wobbuffet. What was their point of being in the movie? This movie would have been perfect if they weren’t in it.
Voice wise, Sarah Natochenny, you KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK. I know I was never a fan of you voicing Ash. I mean, Rica Matsumoto is literally tops. And then Veronica Taylor, I will never forget. But your performance here was wonderful. Kate Bristol, Suzy Myers, Michele Knotz, I’m so happy to hear you all. Jimmy Zoppi...*sighs* all I hear is Weevil. No matter who you voice. Meowth sounds like Weevil. James sounds like Weevil with a cold. Professor Oak sounds like Weevil if he was an old man. I’m never going to get over that.
Shipping wise...AH-HA! Gotcha there, it was Pikashipping. And nothing else!
Music wise, I know they only kept like one original BGM and everything else was tampered. I mean it was okay. The opening still brings back nostalgic feels. The ending theme, kind of sweet really.
Sorry for being all ranty with this entry. But I didn’t want to wait 2-3 years to tell people how I really felt about this movie when I review Sun and Moon. Plus I just saw this movie like 4 hours ago. So I’m still pretty hyped.
I don’t give number scores with my reviews so please just go by what I say here. See this movie. There are 3 more days in the U.S. where you can find a theater to watch this. If not, wait three weeks and watch it on Thanksgiving weekend on Disney XD.
Phew. Now if you’ll excuse me, it’s been a long day and I earned myself some pizza.

Hi! I was hoping to ask you for any recommendations on fanfics, specifically pokemon ones?? I trust your judgement and have read your writing before (It's flipping amazing) and I was just wondering if you had any favorites??? Thanks for your time :)
First, thank you for the compliment about my writing! I really appreciate it! ♥
As far as fic recommendations go, I’m afraid I don’t have too many since, in all honesty, I don’t read very much fic anymore. To be even more honest, I don’t read as much as I should period anymore, even though I know I need to get back to reading within my genre to sharpen my skills for my original works. A lot of it comes down to time, and how I mismanage what little free time I have (i.e. I spend it playing video games, writing my own fiction, watching cartoons, et cetera), but nonetheless, I don’t read nearly as much as I should anymore. I need to get back to that.
With that said, I can at least recommend some old classics that I’ve loved, although only one of them is a Pokémon fic (and it’s a PokéAni fic, at that). Hopefully you’ll find them enjoyable!
Title: PhantomAuthor: PinkFalconFandom: PokéAniGenre: Romance/DramaStatus: In ProgressSummary: “Misty's Training to be a Master in a large, ancient Stadium, but it isn't easy. First the Battle Ghost gets its greedy hands on her Totodile, and now her old friend Rudi is trying to court her. But the Ghost doesn't like that . . .”Rec Notes: This is, as odd as it may sound, a Phantom of the Opera Pokémon AU. Rather than simply transport the characters into an opera house, however, PinkFalcon took the time to adapt the Phantom of the Opera plot to the Pokémon world, while at the same time creating a bunch of worldbuilding to go along with it. So instead of an opera house, it’s a training stadium; instead of a phantom, he’s a “battle ghost” (and a little something extra, on top of that). Pokémon are still a very, very real part of this story, which I find to be incredibly appealing, because AUs where the pokémon cease to exist really aren’t interesting to me. Pokémon are important---that needs to be kept in!On top of that, the characters aren’t simply copy-pastes of the characters from the original musical / movie. Although each character does have a counterpart to some extent (Misty is Christine, Rudi is Raoul, Ash is Erik, et cetera), they’re still very much IC. The only real snag when it comes to in character characterization is Gary, given that he’s one of the primary antagonists, but even that can be accepted if you squint, tilt your head, and remember that his motivations here are rooted in love and loyalty for his grandfather, whom he feels was severely wronged. Either way, Gary’s role is minimal, so that’s easy enough for me to brush by in favor of everything else (which is really, really good). The primary ship for this fic is Ash/Misty, however much the original play and summary might lead you to believe otherwise. With that said, Rudi is treated extremely fairly. This isn’t a case where he’s the asshole boyfriend that you want to die so that Ash and Misty can be together; rather, he’s treated like a real person, his actions and motivations are believable, and there are times when I even feel bad for him despite the fact that I have ship bias for Ash/Misty. (And while Erik/Christine is a ship with a metric ton of problems in the original musical, believe me, Ash is still very much Ash here; there’s none of that gross nonsense in this fic, trust me.) Also, although this is an Ash/Misty fic, rest assured that Pikachu is still a main character and plays a very important role. One of my biggest pet peeves is when PokéAni ship fics either delete the pokémon entirely, or at the very least render them irrelevant. Trust me, Pikachu is not irrelevant here, and his bond with Ash is very real and very important.Overall, this fic is very well-written and easy to get absorbed in, the characterization is excellent, and even if you’re familiar with the original musical, enough is changed to make it original and refreshing. (Again, it’s far and away not a copy/paste of the musical.) The only real catch here is that it’s unfinished, albeit near the end, and hasn’t been updated since 2013. However, that 2013 update came after something like five years of inactivity, so! PinkFalcon is still working on it. It just takes a long time. But each update is really, really worth it, I promise.Overall, this fic is a real winner. I highly recommend checking it out.
Title: The Girl From WhirlpoolAuthor: SilverShineFandom: NarutoGenre: RomanceStatus: In ProgressSummary: “When Naruto's father met his mother, his only impression was that a village out there must have been missing its idiot.”Rec Notes: You know how Kishimoto included backstory for how Minato and Kushina met and fell in love? It’s irrelevant. It’s honestly irrelevant in the face of this fic. This fic is better than the entire Naruto manga and franchise combined, and trust me, I’m not exaggerating. While the only genre listed for this fic is “romance,” this fic is much, much more than that. At 248,299 words, this fic stands not only as a slow burn Minato/Kushina fic, but it begins with how they met as children and grew as individuals throughout all of the events that led up to the start of the Naruto manga. As such, it not only shows them coming together as acquaintances, and then friends, and then eventual lovers; it also shows their other friendships, the wars they both lived through and participated in, and everything in-between. They also each date other people throughout the course of the fic, so trust me when I say that although this is a Minato/Kushina fic, again, it’s more than that. They’re not the only people in each other’s lives, even as their affections for one another solidly grow over time. This fic is, like the one before it, amazingly written and very, very easy to get absorbed into. The prose is excellent, as is the dialogue. Once again, the only snag is that it’s still in progress, and this time hasn’t been updated since 2011. I don’t know if this one ever will be updated again, but the plus side is that it at least doesn’t end on a cliffhanger. Either way, it’s excellent, and as far as I’m concerned this is the canon backstory for Minato and Kushina. The tripe Kishimoto can take a hike, tbh.
Title: The Legend of Zelda: The ReturnAuthor: Rose ZemlyaFandom: The Legend of ZeldaGenre: AdventureStatus: Complete!Summary: “Takes place after OoT with the assumption that Link lost all of his memories of the events in the game when Zelda sent him back in time.”Rec Notes: Okay, so that summary really doesn’t tell you a whole lot. (No offense, Rose, but it’s true!)Essentially, The Return is a sequel fic (of sorts) for Ocarina of Time, taking place in the child timeline. The idea here is that Link lost his memories after Zelda sent him back (as stated), and so he grew up as a mostly normal boy. There are a few catches, however: He was still banished from Kokiri Forest thanks to the Great Deku Tree dying again (from something) and Mido blaming him for it, and as such he grew up under the watchful eyes of the owner of the archery shop, a man named Bruiser. Everyone else who was involved in the Ocarina of Time plot (the Sages, namely) are fully aware of everything that happened over the course of OoT, though this is being kept secret from Link (as is the fact that he’s actually the Hero of Time, et cetera). And unbeknownst to Link (and everyone else), Ganondorf is seeking to make a comeback now, using Dark Link as his primary agent of choice . . .I can’t say too much more about the plot without spoiling all of it. I can say, however, that this fic (and its sequel) are probably my favorite fics of all time. Rose’s writing has informed so much of what I think about the Zelda-verse over the years (I mean, I discovered The Return when I was about thirteen!), and to this day the origin story she wrote for the Gerudo (which is in the sequel, Reconciliation) is what I hold as the canonical origin story for them, particularly with regards to the OoT Gerudo. It just makes so much sense, on top of being beautifully written. The Return features a multitude of original characters, and what is notable about this is that this is the first fic I ever read where OCs have been related to (or in relationships with) canon characters, and yet it works. In fact, it didn’t even hit me that that’s what I was reading until I was at the very end, and then I was like, “Oh. Okay,” and went along with it, because Rose’s characters are actual characters who feel like they belong, versus just being vessels for the writer or reader. All of her characters (canon characters included!) are extremely fleshed out and three-dimensional. The worldbuilding she includes (such as the aforementioned origin story for the Gerudo) is phenomenal. The plot is engaging and easy to get absorbed in, once again. And RR!Link is the best Link, hands down. Of course, I might be a bit biased because I relate with him an awful lot (his snark is my snark), but all the same, I adore him. (As well as Hunter, and Neesha, and . . .)There are a few caveats here. The writing in the beginning is rough. Rose started The Return back in 2001, and as such, particularly when you read her later work and then go back, you can see how her writing is evolved. It’s still not bad, but her earlier writing is not nearly as pretty as her later writing. I implore you to just sort of . . . forgive that, for the time being, because trust me: Her writing really, really improves over time. (Even over the course of The Return, given that she spent two years on it.) There are also place sin The Return where Rose admits that she included certain things she’s not proud of (such as damseling of certain characters) as a result of her feeling like she had to stick to the Zelda formula. She breaks more and more from that over time (especially in the sequel), so it’s just one of those things where you can say, “Okay, that’s not the greatest, but she has learned and it shows.” (It’s also something she’s avoiding in The Warden’s Return, which is her original work based on this series of fics she has written---and trust me, it’s quite original, it’s not a copy/paste!)Overall, you do need to read The Return before going on to the sequel, I feel, but it’s very, very, very worth it. And I don’t want to talk smack on The Return, because it is still quite good! But if there are parts where you feel like :/ about the writing quality or whatever, just know that Rose does really grow as a writer, it vastly improves, and the rougher parts in the beginning are worth sticking through to get to the really, really good stuff later on. I promise.
Title: The Legend of Zelda: ReconciliationAuthor: Rose ZemlyaFandom: The Legend of ZeldaGenre: AdventureStatus: In ProgressSummary: “Sequel to The Legend of Zelda: The Return. Based loosely on A Link to the Past.”Rec Notes: re: that summary: Rose pls.More specifically, this is the sequel to the above fic (obviously), and as the summary states, it’s loosely based on A Link to the Past, despite A Link to the Past not featuring the same Hero in the actual Zelda timeline (but do we care about that when this fic is this good? No, no we do not). Reconciliation takes place three years (iirc) after The Return, and opens with Link, Hunter, and Neesha returning from a “diplomacy mission” that they had been sent on for the past three months before the fic starts. During that time, Aghanim (who named himself regent to the throne of Hyrule) has been up to some awful nonsense, which kickstarts the plot when Link and Neesha return home only to discover that they’re no longer welcome in Hyrule Castletown . . .Again, this is a case where I can’t say too much without spoiling the plot. I can say that, if you’re familiar with A Link to the Past, there will be some things that are familiar to / expected by you (such as Aghanim being a villain, the three towers that Aghanim had constructed in OoT’s Hyrule, Link needing to retrieve the Master Sword from the Lost Woods, et cetera). However, Rose also veers off course from the game’s plot and, much like The Return before it, makes it an original story, and very much her own. All of the characters from The Return make a comeback, and there are a host of new characters (such as Hylian noble Eldrick) who add to the plot as well. The writing is absolutely fantastic (especially as it goes on), the narrative is absolutely compelling, and there are numerous places where your heart will be broken (but you’ll be glad for it---you’re going to suffer, but you’re going to be happy about it). Reconciliation really probably is my favorite overall fic. I adore pretty much everything about it and recommend it to everyone. The only real catch here is that update wait times are immense; Rose began Reconciliation in 2004, it’s still in progress, and the last update was in 2014. It also ended on a cliffhanger. However, the upside is that she is still working on it, it hasn’t been forgotten, and so there is hope! (There are also a lot of drabbles on her prompt blog. ♥) This fic is really, really, really worth it. So is The Return. So are all the drabbles and midquels and prequels. So is The Warden’s Return. Really, Rose’s writing in general is worth it. Go read it.
Title: Catch Me if I FallAuthor: flusteredkeithFandom: Voltron: Legendary DefenderGenre: RomanceStatus: Complete!Summary: “Ever since the five paladins began to really work together as a team, Allura swore to herself that as long as the universe was at stake, she’d always put their feelings above her own, no matter what the circumstances were. She thought it’d be simple—easy, even. What she didn’t expect, however, was for the complications to arise from within herself.Alternatively, Allura tries not to fall for Keith.(Spoiler alert: it doesn’t work.)”Rec Notes: This fic is what really opened me up to the idea of Keith/Allura as a ship, which made me start thinking about it more and more, which made me really come to love it. It takes place following the events of S2, which means that it covers not only the burgeoning feelings between Allura and Keith, but also how Keith comes to take on the mantle of Black Paladin / Leader of Voltron. Everyone is in character (the dialogue in this fic is on point), the slow burn is there and believable, the parallels are nice . . . really, everything about this one is great. It’s also a one-shot, so it’s a lot less of a commitment to make going into it. If you’re curious about Keith/Allura (or even if you’re not but want to give this a chance anyway), I really recommend it. It’s a good read.
Title: Once Upon a Time There Was an OceanAuthor: ABadPlanWellExecutedFandom: Doctor WhoGenre: AdventureStatus: Complete!Summary: “Rose had traveled through so many different parallels, ranging from the mundane to the bizarre, but now, looking out at the familiar London skyline, she wondered if she'd finally found home at last.”Rec Notes: Everything by this author is, dare I say it, absolutely fantastic, but I’m going to go ahead and rec this one as it’s the first one by the author I ever read, and to this day I still think about it (and, once again, find it really easy to get absorbed in it at any point). This fic takes place between the conclusion of the season two finale, and the end of season four, when Rose is (as the summary indicates) jumping from parallel to parallel with the Dimension Cannon. There are multiple fics with this premise by this author (as part of her Certain Dark Things series), but this one in particular stands out because Rose does make it to her original world in this one . . . only at the wrong time. She ends up bumping into the Ninth Doctor before he ever met her, as well as Captain Jack Harkness while the latter is working for Torchwood 3 (makes sense if you remember his timeline after he gains immortality). Though this author does ship Doctor/Rose, this isn’t a ship fic so much as it is, as the genre indicates, an adventure fic with these three all thrown together at differing points on their own timeline, each of them having only pieces of information about each other. There are times when the writing jumps around a bit where it shouldn’t (where the focus character shifts inexplicably, for instance), but overall the writing is good, the premise is excellent, and I really recommend this one. Though as I said, everything this author has done is great, and that’s the truth. Also, it’s Nine, Rose, and Jack; what more could you possibly ask for?
Title: And On the Third DayAuthor: MerryArwenFandom: Harry PotterGenre: RomanceStatus: Complete!Summary: “Eventually, they find a note tacked to the gargoyle who guards the passage to the Headmaster's office. It is in Granger's handwriting and signed by her at the bottom, and tells them that, the danger being over and the initial aftermath winding down, she feels that the three of them need some time alone to recuperate and will reappear exactly three days from that day, at four o'clock.”Rec Notes: I am very, very, very picky when it comes to HP fic, so you can trust me when I say that this one is fantastic. It follows the ending of DH with a slight canon divergence---namely, that instead of just having Ron/Hermione in love with each other, the fact of the matter is that Harry is involved in that relationship as well, i.e., it’s a Harry/Ron/Hermione OT3 fic. And, again, it’s excellent. The characterization is perfect, dialogue is spot on, and the prose flows really, really well. It’s a one-shot, so there isn’t a lot of commitment here, and to this day I sometimes come back to this fic because it is just that good. Really, if you’re open to the idea of a Golden Trio OT3, go read it. I’m sure this fic will convince you.
