#negative comments
Text
I get a fair amount of comments on my fics on ao3 that attempt to correct some aspect of the story. It affects my motivation and my mood a good deal. I have a few questions.
Fellow writers (if this happens to you too):
Does this affect you emotionally and motivationally too?
How do you deal with this when it happens to you (if it does)?
Everyone:
What is the motivation behind leaving comments like that?

It's not a big deal but I got two less than complimentary (but not quite mean) comments on my fics this past week and I'm still in a bit of a mood about it because part of me is insulted and part of me thinks it's funny that 1) there's an AO3 guest user who unironically calls themself "reviewer" and goes around dropping surface-level critique on fics, and 2) someone read 37 chapters of a fic without leaving a single comment until they decided to stop reading😂.
Idk. Mixed feelings!

Note on negativity
Hey, y'all!
So long-time readers may remember me posting shortly after publishing "Actual Proof that Bruce Wayne is Batman" about negative comments and their harm to writers. Unfortunately after publishing "bane" i feel the need to say it again
Ao3 writers write for FUN and for THEMSELVES. They share from a vulnerable and excited place inside and not because they were obligated.
There are also multiple tagging conventions and different styles of tagging fics. For example, I choose to tag slash relationships only on the fics where they are shown, not every fic in a series that may only occasionally feature the relationship, a decision I've gotten flack for in the past.
This recent fic however (bane) DID follow an established ao3 tagging convention. Folks, please:
"Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings" is a glaring signal that there may be a very harsh story below, and is used by writers to preserve a story's tension.
If you cannot handle the unknown, you don't have to read it! If you start and then get nervous, you don't have to finish! If authors provide an optional spoiler in their notes, that is your ticket to determine if this fic is ok for you.
I do understand, believe me, that there are times when we as readers make a judgement call from the warnings and end up getting triggered. I HAVE BEEN THERE. But please stop and consider before you leave an angry, biting, sarcastic, or hostile comment.
There are a lot of young and insecure writers on that site. A lot who were probably terrified to share that fic with a huge and unknown audience. And all of them wrote for their own enjoyment or exploration. You saying cutting things to their faces is hurtful, and could cause them to stop posting or stop writing altogether. That is NOT fair to them, and its also unfair to the people who genuinely enjoy their work.
So take a minute before you rant at them and slam "send." Take five. Write your rant on a piece of paper if you want. But just click away. Dont leave a comment. Dont leave a kudo. Just click off.
Dont risk destroying a writer's desire to write.
Two years ago, some of the comments I've received could have done this to me. They could have caused me really bad mental health spirals, and if Im completely honest, they affected me a little more than I want to admit, even now. But I'm not speaking because I can't take a few snide remarks. Im speaking because I know others out there CANT, and they shouldn't have to.
There's enough out there to tear people down. Don't join it.
Thank you
- sprite
Please feel encouraged to spread this post, but DO NOT bash the bashers. Most lash out from their own hurt, and snapping back is not the answer.

That feeling when you get so excited to post a new chapter, you refresh and check your email constantly, then the first comment comes in and its like this:
The characters have no personality
No surprise there
I can't believe it took you thirteen chapters to reveal something everyone already knew
This was so draggy
Well thanks for the chapter anyway.
Well fuck you.
Yeah well, I'm weak and got super affected. No wonder writers stop writing even after they spend hours/years on their works.
Coping mechanism: I just booked a tattoo appointment for myself. 😂

don’t let that negative comment get to you! You could update your story next year and I’d still be there to read it 😆
Oh my god, that's so sweet, thank you 🥹 I got this weird surge of inspiration for it a week ago, and I've been working on the next chapter ever since. So getting that comment right in the middle of my resurgence (😅🙈) was not ideal. But I try not to think about it as a discouragement, because I've seen other people get it as well. So, it's just someone with nothing better to do than leaving stupid comments online, it's not about me or my story.
Thank you again, your support means so much to me 😍☺️❤️❤️❤️❤️

For Your Negative Comment Needs...
@i-like-turkey is dealing with dumb people. We all get those comments from people that should have hit the BACK button. When you do, I offer you this screencap as a response.

As someone who reads and writes fanfiction, what are your thoughts on receiving negative feedback/advice in the comment section? Do you welcome constructive criticism or do you find it rude when someone criticizes your work, no matter how respectful they may be, because you're ultimately doing this for free?
Difficult.
I do value constructive criticism, but sometimes that is only a "he would never do that" opinion veiled in more or less harsh words.
I think it depends whether it is respectful, and coming from a place of knowledge. I just had a comment like that where someone argued, with examples, that my characterization might be off - and I then explained where I was coming from in contrast to them, and that for example was a constructive discussion imho. But I also had ones in December, that were not that at all (in-between one that was), but full on accusations, because I wrote something they didn't like.
Fanfiction authors are ultimately doing it for free and for enjoyment. For the reader, that means if you do not enjoy, you click the little x on the tab and go and choose another fic.
Or, if you still like the fic "enough"... you suck it up, or note why you didn't like that one thing while saying what you liked. Because...
If the criticism is in regards to writing style or the story connections in general then that can be valuable information, even if it may hurt at first. And sometimes a note from a commenter you know* as to why something is off can help immensely. Imho.
(*that is an important bit for me, too - does the person criticizing you comment regularly? Engage with the story? Or are they only ever coming out to criticize? The emotional impact is very different then, obviously.)
So it... kinda depends on whether the person wanting to criticize is able to do so without becoming personal. Since fanfiction in general can be pretty emotional that is a thin line to walk? And sometimes people confuse criticism with the permission to hate on what was offered...
If you are getting negative feedback and do not wish to have it, then put that into the notes of your fic would be my advice - and tell the commenter, kindly but firmly. Set a line. If they persist, block them, and if they are not logged in put the comments to moderated and delete the comments you do not wish to see on your fic until they've stopped (trolls in general do want their posts published, in my experience these things stop when they aren't anymore. Which is not to say that the person criticizing is always a troll, but this shit happens.) This is your fic, you can decide the level of engagement you allow.
And the level of criticism you wish to have.
And - it is valid to change one's mind about that, too.
Writing should be fun.
And your mental health always comes first (and I know how taxing receiving something like this can be).

I recently discovered your thread on tumblr about Baldwin and Domenico and I have to say I didn't see it in the series but I do love the take you have on it!
Did you ever receive any negative comments about the pairing and if you did how do you deal with it? I have DOW fiction in mind and I know people will not receive it well I but I need to have it gone from my mind!
Onions have layers and so does this answer 😂
So first of all thankyou for reading my crack ship!
So i never really received any serious negative comments about Baldwenico but there was deffinitely some mixed responses and confirmation that i would burn in hell for the ship. But that was from mutuals so its all done in jest 😂
I did receive some comments on other fics, unwarrented (rude) constructive criticism on my trilogy and some "vile" comments on my Rebecca x Domenico.
I aint the type to walk away from shit. Im not going to back down and certainly not to a tumblr troll. But thats how I am in real life, idgaf who you are I back myself in confrontational/negative/rude situations. You come to my space and come for me, you best be prepared for me to come back hard and i wont stop until they back down or block me.
You do you. You want to write something, write it. You have this idea in mind, post it. Dont be afraid of the vultures waiting to pick at you. Fuck em. There will be others out there that share your interest. You have an idea that you nurse for so long and you love it, then do it. Open up a word doc and write it. Do what makes you happy.

Shadowbugs and Negative Comments
Some humans who have Shadowbug companions will sometimes post cute pictures or videos of these big, lovable goofballs onto the internet. This could be of them wearing funny costumes, playing with kittens, or even just being themselves.
The response from the public is often mixed, but is mainly positive. However, some very unhinged people do find these videos and leave some nasty, nasty comments. Some are like "I hope that monster and its little hellspawns get burned alive" or "You should be shot for associating with those bastards".
Obviously, a Shadowbug would be quite upset upon reading those comments despite the fact those unhinged people are behind a screen (especially if the comments are about their friends or family).
There was an incident in which one of these unhinged people doxed someone who had a Shadowbug and showed up to his home with a flamethrower, only to get yeeted into oblivion by said Shadowbug (which proves that karma doesn't play around).

Tumblr media
You don’t like it? Don’t read it. Better yet go write your own damn story. And stop leaving idiotic comments on mine. I really could care less about losing one annoying ass negative commentator.
