A couple months ago now I was fortunate enough to buy a used switch lite from my friend, and even luckier to obtain a copy of Pokemon Scarlet at the local pawn shop at a very reduced price (plus a couple other things but that's not the point rn). So, we go right from the earliest generation of pokemon to the newest back to back, with possibly just as many bugs and glitches, to my gen 9 team!
Team stats and general gameplay info under the cut:
"Nila", Meowscarada, ♀, U-Turn - Play Rough - Flower Trick - Night Slash
"Quaord", Clodsire, ♂, Poison Jab - Earthquake - Liquidation - Megahorn
"Guache", Grafaiai, ♂, Slash - Knock Off - Poison Jab - U-Turn
"Stella", Luxray☆, ♀, Volt Switch - Spark - Crunch - Ice Fang
"Étoile", Pyroar☆, ♀, Flamethrower - Hyper Voice - Swift - Crunch
"Pharle", Farigiraf, ♂, Crunch - Shadow Ball - Twin Beam - Tera Blast
General Playthrough Notes:
Okay look I need to level with you all right off the bat, I don't like the vast majority of the pokemon introduced in gen 9. They feel like such first drafts to me. I normally go into these games with a team plan but this time I literally had two slots missing going in, I just could not think of what to put in there. And I already planned on using two poison-types and two normal-types! Normally I avoid doubling up on types as much as possible! After a bit I used the codes to get a bug-tera mew and a cetitan and was just thinking "I guess they'll be mainstays??"... then I immediately ran into a shiny shinx. Then a shiny litleo. They happened to slot right into the team and I've never been fortunate enough to use shinies in a playthrough (except my soulsilver randomized apocalocke but shhhhh we aren't there yet), so I put them on. But if they hadn't shown up and essentially saved my ass I would have been hard pressed to fill up a team of six (look I literally just used a mew I'm not in a hurry to use it again, at least it's been a couple years since I used luxray in a playthrough).
Anyways, despite all that, I had fun! I knew going in it wouldn't be too difficult and would have its lion's share of glitches, so I was just along for the ride. I like the friend group you form in this game! I like vibing with koraidon as an honorary team member! It's just a pleasant time.
Back to shinies for a moment, overworld shinies without any sound effects to indicate them is evil. I spent so much time staring at groups of pokemon trying to tell if one of them was off-palette. Thankfully, I never ran into any shinies other than the ones I caught.
The raids are neat, though since I don't have Nintendo Online and no frequent enough local players it isn't super interesting with just the npcs. Caught a few neat fellas though, including a steel-tera breloom and a fighting-tera azumarill.
Speaking of, when I first started playing those mewtwo raids were going on and I wanted to participate in them so bad. I barely missed my window, though from what I've heard I wouldn't have stood much of a chance anyway, haha.
I wish there was more post-game other than the raids. I've redone the tournament like half a dozen times now; I wish there was a battle frontier or something. To be fair, I haven't caught all those ruin legends yet; though the one I have caught I managed to get in the first ball, lol.
Do I have the dlc yet? No! I can't just throw around that kind of money willy-nilly. Maybe someday though.
Picnics are really cute though I wish I could pet my pokemon instead of just wash them. Also why can't I sit down on the chairs that are set up around the picnic table??? Still don't really get the sandwich hype, I might mess around with it a bit though, I want to give it a fair shot.
"Hey Nel, why haven't you talked about the Elite Four? You usually start these notes with them?" The E4 is very unremarkable, sorry. I won't bore you by being the billionth person to rag on how Geeta is objectively the worst champion. Also when I rematched all the gym leaders I didn't have to terastilize or heal my pokemon. They were a bit more impressive the first time around tbh. The gym puzzles were neat though!! Except for Tulip's. Fuck her.
Oh yeah, terastilizing is a thing. Mega evolution is still better.
I wanna hang out with my friiiieeeennnds more, both my irl friends and Nemona, Penny, and Arven. It would be so fun to do raids with them or something like that.
Cold take but the uniforms suck I wanna customize my outfit like Nemona, Penny, Arven and Team Star do
(Normally this is where I'd show a screenshot of me finishing the game, but I'm one of the few weirdos who can't use captchas and haven't found another way to transfer files from my switch to other devices. Have a picture of my cat instead; his name is Prince.)

kid-aimed magical girl anime never got the respect it deserves in the english-speaking anime fandom and market outside of sailor moon and, to a lesser extent, cardcaptor sakura and that sucks ass (especially so since i feel that's a big reason why a lot of casual sailor moon fans still react to other magical girl franchises by accusing them of being rip-offs)
it is 100% the fault of the fact that the majority of what anime that aired for kids was stuff aimed at boys cuz people thought 'well girls might watch a boys show, but boys wont watch a girls show' imo, it's why kids wb edited cardcaptor sakura even further from the already edited nelvana dub to make the show appeal to boys too

So I know I’ve already posted this pic once, and there I listed all of the reasons why I love it so much. But this time I wanted to mention how great it was to work with @xsunnysoftx (Alan) the artist who did it as a commission for me. Here’s his commission info: https://at.tumblr.com/xsunnysoftx/okay-im-just-gonna-say-fuck-it-and-post-it-here/7tm0js03946x First, most importantly is that I love the art.  That kind of speaks for itself though.  But it was also helpful that Alan enjoys the Nelvana Care Bears movies, because seeing the Care Bears art he posted inspired me to ask him for the commission.  So it made me comfortable asking for the exact pic I wanted. Second, he was very clear and transparent about everything.  It was easy giving him the info, he has a clear TOS, his prices were clear, and knowing how to the payment was straightforward. Third, he was very pleasant, courteous and kind throughout the whole process.  This made me feel very comfortable and he was easy to talk to. Fourth, he took all of the info and refs I gave him and was able to give me exactly what I wanted. And finally....he showed me his work one step at a time and was very open and flexible to making edits.  He showed me a rough sketch, the line-art, and the basic coloring before he moved on to the next step. When he showed me the line-art, I wanted to make some edits to make the picture fit exactly what I wanted.  He happily made the edits and patiently sent me updated versions.   The same happened with the coloring. This sometimes makes the difference between a pic being great and being fantastic.  It really made me feel like I was able to get exactly what I wanted. Many artists are willing to do that, but not all of them.  It really makes the whole process extremely enjoyable. So I just wanted to mention all of that to say how happy I am not only with the pic, but Alan as an artist and the whole process.  It really gives you a lot more confidence that you’ll be happy with the result. So even though I don’t usually do this, I definitely wanted to recommend anyone who is interested in Care Bears art to consider getting a commission from him.  I don’t get commissions very much these days, but in this case it was completely worth it. I’ll also re-blog his commission info.  I usually reserve my page purely to Care Bear posts, but it’s definitely worth an exception in this case.

my favorite piece of beylade trivia is that -- because of the nature of the dub, which was done by nelvana and as such cast canadian child/young adult actors rather than the usual suspects of anime dubbing -- my two favorites of the main characters (rei and kai) were played by actors who both ended up being in mean girls around the same time they were dubbing the show.
rei was played by daniel desanto, a pretty prolific child star who is proably more famous for playing carlos on magic schoolbus and being one of the are you afraid of the dark kids. he plays gretchen's sleazebag boyfriend. the guy who gets hit in the face with the stereo during the Christmas play.
Tumblr media
david reale, who plays kai, does not have a speaking role. he is extremely "iconic" (as the kids say) however, because that role was in fact that of four candy cane-holder glen coco. usa today CONFIRMED.

Mayblade day 10: song (reminder that Nickelback was once featured on official Beyblade merch)
Nelvana and Hasbro decided they wanted to make Beyblade be more than just spinning tops with a tie-in anime series. After several attempts, I think they kinda gave up because non of them were successful. Beywheelz, Beyraiderz, and Beywarriors all flopped (despite some cool ideas). Their trading card game back in the og series is so obscure that I can’t get any info on it besides “it existed” and “it seems poorly thought out.” And at one point they got into music. After finding this YouTube playlist with Beyblade songs (openings, endings, the dub insert songs, etc), I noticed that for some reason it included How You Remind Me by Nickelback, California by Phantom Planet, and an AMV. After some research, I found that those songs were released on official Beyblade CD’s back in 2001-2002. So I’m gonna give some thoughts on every single song in that playlist in the context of Beyblade (also to make up for yesterday’s shorter post since I didn’t have much time)
Normally I'd add a cut here but my laptop's still broken and I don't know enough about the Tumblr app to use it properly
Catch a Cannonball by White Pony: This song is considered lost media and if anyone can find it please DM me or something
Let’s Beyblade by Sick Kid ft Lukas Rossi: The original series English dun opening. It’s very early 2000′s and serves as an opening pretty well. I just wish there was an extended/ full version
Fighting Spirits by System-B: As a standalone opening, it’s pretty good. As far as Beyblade goes, it’s wildly different than any opening we’ve gotten since, which makes it stand out even more
Cheer Song by System-B: Not sure how I feel about the song itself, but if it works for anything, it’s as an ED. Also, it’s so different from Fighting Sprits that I had a hard time believing they were both made by System-B
Beyblade by Giorgio Vanni: The Italian opening for the first season. The combination of rock with what sounds like bells(?) later in the song create a weird but interesting feel to it. Also “Boy-blade” is such a stupid pun that it had to have been made ironically, right. Right?
OFF THE CHAIN by TOSS & TURN: Song is a banger. I have no idea who thought it’d fit Beyblade as an opening. Love how it’s in ALL CAPS. Also I don’t speak a word of Japanese but there’s enough English that I can kinda guess what the song is trying to say
URBAN LOVE by Shiori: Another song in all caps, this time as an ED. While I’m normally not a fan of less energetic songs, this is pretty good
Jet by Fairy Fore: The scream at the beginning of the song makes you think you’re gonna get a much harder song than the first verse. And the it slowly ramps up until by the end, you’re back to the same energy as the beginning. Brilliant
What’s the Answer? by Retro G Style: Like OFF THE CHAIN, there is just enough English for me to get a vague idea of what the song is about. I like it, but wish that they had used the song by Retro G Style in G-Revolution for obvious reasons
Beyblade vforce by Giorgio Vanni: IMO a nice improvement over the first Italian opening, but goddamn “Boy-blade” is still here. Why?
Poroporo by Hana Hana: The ED for the V-Force movie. Every other beat is out of tune but it’s done on purpose so I can’t consider it a flaw. It grew on me over time but the decision to be out of tune on purpose is still weird
Victory by Dynamite SHU: I couldn’t find official information on the artist but someone said Victory was performed by Dynamite SHU so I’m rolling with it for now. Also it may be called Victory or Victoria. It’s unclear. It’s also part of the V-Force movie soundtrack and honestly I think it’d make a better ED than Poroporo, if only because Poroporo isn’t really enjoyable on your first listen (even if it really grown on you later)
Go Ahead by Motoko Kumai: Amazing OP for G-Revolution. Probably my favorite from Bakuten Shoot. It gets you pumped for the episode and it fits the tone of early G-Rev perfectly
Oh Yes!! by Sista with Yuka: As an ED, it’s pretty good. It’s also a great way to conclude the early episodes of G-Rev
Kaze no Fuku Basho by Makiyo: Somehow manages to be an improvement over Oh Yes!! while also fitting the middle portion of G-Rev better
Identified by Springs: Finally we learn that the G in G-Revolution stands for Good. It’s also the perfect OP to end the original series on
Sign of Wish by Makiyo: Like Identified is the perfect OP to end on, Sign of Wish is the perfect ED to conclude the original series. I know that the last episode used Kaze no Fuku Basho for the epilogue, but Sign of Wish was perfect for the BEGA arc, itself a great conclusion to the original story
Never Gonna Take Me Down by Anthony Vanderburgh: I’ve been fighting every night an day. I’m gonna do my best to put you away. It’s perfect for more friendly but intense (like most of the minor battles in tournament arcs). Like most of the dub insert songs, they’re bangers but sadly misused
Round After Round by Jason Dean Bennison: Like Never Gonna Take Me Down, it’s perfect for battles where both bladers want nothing more than to just fight each other
All Across the Nation by The Black Europeans: The fact that this was used for any battle in the season 1 tournaments (you know, the ones with multiple countries) is weird, but the song itself is still good
Let’s Go Beybladers by Krystal Band: The vocals have this strange quality to them, like the musical equivalent of a 2004 homemade video project made by a high school student. Objectively bad but charming in its own way
Swing Low by Jason Dean Bennison: The vocals feel out of place, but damn that bass is epic. Also you can kinda hear samples from Fighting Spirits in the background (that “DORAIGA” scream is hard to miss after a few listens)
Underdog by Mudd: In all honesty it’s a shame Mudd didn’t go one to have more success after Beyblade. Underdog was great
Always Be In the Game by Jason Dean Bennison: Normally I’m not a fan of rap vocals over rock instrumentation but Jason pulled it off. Not sure how or why, but it works
Switchblade by Lenz: Good song but someone messed up when they rereleased it. Also the contrast between the music and the lyrics in the chorus is fairly specific. Maybe it was written to be a character theme?
Hang On by Chris Szczesniak and Mike Dunca: It took 20 years for this song to be released. Amazing bass, amazing vocals, and I can’t think of a song that better fits Kai vs Brooklyn (the time where Kai wins, that is)
Rise Above the Storm by Daniel LeBlanc and Creighton Doane: Oddly uplifting yet very energetic. When I say this is one of the most uplifting songs I’ve ever heard, I am not exaggerating
I’m Not Going Down by Jonathan Evans and Gerard Tevlin: If Hang On fits Kai vs Brooklyn, then I’m Not Going Down fits Tyson vs Brooklyn. It’s just a powerful declaration of victory, being the musical embodiment of that final battle
Start the Circus by Far From Heroes: Good song but I don’t see what it has to do with Beyblade. Still a banger
Cinderella by Adam Crossley with 9 Point Landing: Just like Start the Circus, a banger that is completely unrelated to Beyblade
What the Girls Say by Jennesy: For a show with such a skewed gender ratio for characters, this song feels extremely out of place. It’s good, but manages to feel more “off” than Cinderella
Running Away by Project Wyze: A friend of mine likes to say that early 2000′s music was 80% pop rock and 10% rap metal. Running Away is part of that 10% and it is the perfect example of what rap metal is. If you like rap metal, you’ll like this song. If you don’t like rap metal, you won’t like this song
Let It Rip by Ego Massive: It truly relates to Beyblade and it isn’t an insert song. I’m surprised. The song itself is alright, but pales in comparison to some others
Split the Atom by Edwin and the Pressure: Great song. Unrelated to Beyblade. I’m starting to notice a trend
Pretty Girls by Prozzak: Good song and I have though the glass break sound effect was real and in my house on one occasion
Girls & Boys by Good Charlotte: This song is 50% less out of place than What the Girls Say
Year 3000 by Busted: Possibly a warm take, but the Jonas Brothers’ cover of the song was a downgrade
Buck Rogers by Feeder: I first heard this song playing Gran Turismo and forever associate it with that game. I can’t judge the song on its own because of that
Movies by Alien Ant Farm: Honestly it’s probably the weakest song that released on that CD. It’s not bad per se, but it’s less good than the rest
Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus: Hit early 2000′s song that was shoehorned into Beyblade merch and honestly, it wasn’t a bad idea
Nothing by A: Google “A Nothing” and see if you find this song. Other than that, it’s great. Love it
How You Remind Me by Nickelback: It’s Nickelback. That’s all there is to say. Take that how you will
California by Phantom Planet: If only Beyblade saw the US as more than New York and Las Vegas (and later, Moab, Utah). The west coast isn’t even acknowledged. Had they made one of the characters be from California (like any of the All-Starz), this would’ve been more fitting
Metal Saga by Clifton David: While the English OP for mfb isn’t bad, it feels like a remix of the Japanese OP, but without being different enough to stand out
Metal Fight Beyblade by YU+KI: YU+KI did an amazing job in every season of mfb, and the first opening is no exception
Boys ~To the Radiant Tomorrow~ by MASH: I thought Boys was the artist for far longer than I should. It’s a great ED, and has IMO some of the strongest visuals for a Beyblade ED even though it’s very simple
Beyblade Metal Fusion by unknown artist: I don’t know who made the Italian opening for Fusion but it was pretty good
Galaxy Heart by YU+KI: It takes everything that made Metal Fight Beyblade good an multiplies it tenfold. Absolutely amazing
Oozora wo Koete Yuje by Odoriba Soul: Pretty good ED. It kinda gives me similar vibes as Oh Yes!! but I’m not sure why
Beyblade Metal Masters by unknown artist: An improvement over the Italian Fusion opening, taking it from good to great
Spinning the World by Noa: Love it. Great ED for the Sol Blaze movie. Probably on the same tier as Kaze no Fuku Basho for me
Kokoro no Yuki by YU+KI: the 4d opening slaps even harder than Galaxy Heart
Destiny by YCHRO: Just like Kokoro no Yuki managed to outdo Galaxy Heart, Destiny managed to outdo Oozora wo Koete Yuke. God 4d had great music (if only it wasn’t a shortened season)
Shine On by unknown artist: Absolute banger. That’s all I have to say about it besides that the artist deserves to actually be credited
Let It Rip by The Lodge: I did not expect bars of this level from a song made for a toy commercial. Even though the dub adding rap in anime is usually an unpopular decision, this was good
Game Changer by the Lodge: Another banger
To the Extreme by the Lodge: Why couldn’t the XTS toyline go as hard as this song?
Deploy and Destroy: This song is great and makes Stealth Battlers seem a lot cooler than they were irl
Own the Dome: Somehow a team of people got Hasbro’s worst stadium ever, and made the best commercial out of it. And part of that has to do with this absolute bop of a song
Stunt, Race, Crash by the Lodge: Like To the Extreme, Deploy and Destroy, and Own the Dome, this was a great song that advertised a terrible product
Zero-G Bey! Go! by YU+KI: I’d rank it between Metal Fight Beyblade and Galaxy Heart. It’s good, but not as much as the previous Japanese OPs (granted the bar was pretty damn high)
Looking Up Smiling (We Go!) by YCHRO: It manages to be just barely better than Destiny, which is pretty impressive
Beyblade: Shogun Steel by Sugar High Bunny Punch: Does it fit Beyblade? Not really. Is it good? Maybe not great, but better than I’ve seen people give it credit for
Let the Games Begin by Arunachal: The Beywheelz OP that was used for the English and Japanese versions alike. Like the English OP for Shogun Steel, I think it’s better than given credit for. Although like Beywheelz, it pales in comparison to the other seasons
A Better Place by Jonathan Evans: One of the guys behind I’m Not Going Down makes his return. A Better Place is a pretty good ED< even if it doesn’t stand out
Beyraiderz Theme by iSH and Nicholas Walsh: I’ll be honest the chorus is the only part I like from this. The rest is serviceable as an opening, but I wouldn’t call it good
Come Around by SPACEMAN MUSIC: I like Come Around, and consider it an improvement over A Better Place, but I don’t think it fits Beyraiderz as a season
Beywarriors: Cyborg by unknown artist: A better OP than Beyraiderz, but still a tad below Let the Games Begin
Hold Tight by unknown artist: Like anything relating to Beywarriors, the artist name is hard to find. It’s a strange ED, but I can’t put my finger on why. Like Poroporo, it’s interesting, even if I’m not sure whether I like it
Burst Finish! by Tatsuyuki Kobayashi: A good OP that fits the first season of Burst. It’s great
Believe by SHIKURAMEN: The only Burst ED to get a full version, and it’s certainly deserving of it. Like Burst Finish! it fits the first season of Burst perfectly
Our Time by Steven Allerick Chen: A great opening in par with Burst Finish
Battle Above My League by Fenwick & the Futures: The instrumentation is ok I guess. The vocals have this weird feel to them, like lofi but not really. Like Poroporo and Hold Tight, this song interests me because I don’t quite understand what I’m hearing
Evolution Burst! by unknown artist: The Beyblade Burst God OP is great. I'd call it the best of Japanese Burst openings but Cho-Z exists, making Evolution Burst! a worthy second
Beyxercise by Señor Hanami: If we ignore the visuals in the ED (so no Markiplier dancing), it goes from hilariously good to just regular good. The beat is catchy, but the vocals really make this song. It's performed by Hanami's VA, which makes that last "BASUTO FINISHU" so much better
Beyxercise 2 by Señor Hanami: It's Beyxercuse but again. The beat is different, and a bit of a slightly downgrade, but everything else is as good as the original Beyxercise
Evolution by Dave Vives and Steven Pagano: It's a great opening. Not much to say other than it's really good
Made for This by Vaski and Ian Everson: Amazing. Absolutely amazing. It's hard not to sing along and go "We were made for this"
Chouzetsu Muteki Blader by Ryosuke Sasaki: Easily one of my favorite Beyblade openings ever. Everything about it is fantastic
Bey-Pop! by Shun Kusakawa: Catchy and cheery is the best way to describe this. Lovely song
Bey-Pop Swing! by Shun Kusakawa: It's Bey-Pop bit more energetic. Still catchy and cheery, but with a tad bit more excitement
Turbo by Nate Wants to Battle: Best of the English OP's according to many, and a very close second best in my personal ranking. Nathan Sharp has delivered everything one could ask for from an opening
Gatti'n'Roll by unknown artist: I genuinely dkn't know why anyone though this was a good idea. I guess they thought they couldn't beat Chouzetsu Miteki Blader at its win game and went in the opposite direction, being very cheery rather than adrenaline-pumping. For what it's trying to be, it's pretty good. It just doesn't really work as an OP
Rise by Jonathan Young: IMO the best English opening in all of Beyblade. Jonathan Young made a high-energy OP that gets you pumped for the anime. Also his JJBA OP covers are great
Journey Into Tomorrow by Tony Rodini: I have a hard time deciding between this and Made for This for which is the best eyecatcher theme. Journey Into Tomorrow is just as good as Made for This and Made for This was great
Sparking Revolution by unknown artist: Not a bad OP but it doesn't really stand out. It's good, but it's just "there"
We Got the Spin by Konrad OldMoney and Johnny Gr4ves: Like Gatti'n'Roll, they were trying to go in the opposite direction of the previous opening. However, GT was a more lighthearted and comedic season, while Sparking is more serious than its predecessor. This means that to fit the season, we'd need something as intense as Rise, or at least Evolution, and instead we get this. And unlike the original series or mfb using rap on occasions, We Got the Spin lacks the energy present in songs like Shine On and Always Be In the Game
Clash! Dynamite Battle! by NORISTRY: Great opening. Probably my second favorite Japanese Burst OP behind Muteki Blader
We're Your Rebels by Nate Wants to Battle: Massive step up from We Got the Spin, and it's just what we expected from the guy that made Turbo

Summer of Strawberry Shortcake: Muller/Rosen vs. Nelvana
While I never really dwelt on it as a kid, watching the specials in order drives home the contrast between the first three and the last three.
The first three very much feel like stand-alone specials, which to be fair, each one probably was. However, the Nelvana specials feel like they could be episodes of a Strawberry Shortcake TV show, as they have more character continuity. One could even consider the Nelvana specials the first SSC reboot, what with the redesigned characters, changed voice cast, and slight changes to the characters' personalities.
To elaborate, while Strawberry Shortcake has basically the same personality in all the specials, positive and outgoing, in the first three specials she's a more passive character, often letting others step in to solve her problems, and being driven to tears at least once due to the circumstances of the plot. In the Nelvana specials, however, she's a much more proactive character, leaping into action whenever the Peculiar Purple Pieman and Sour Grapes' scheme is revealed. She's a little more feisty in the Nelvana specials, too, though never to the point of losing her sweetness.
Speaking of The Peculiar Purple Pieman and Sour Grapes, the biggest change for them between the first three and the last is that Nelvana streamlined their motivations. Sour Grapes first shows up in the third special, so it's hard to say what changes she went through in the transition to Nelvana, but The Peculiar Purple Pieman became a more cartoony villain, though the seeds for that were actually sown in the third special. But in the first he was rather sinister, and even in the second he was a legitimate threat, the stakes were just rather low. But his motivations were all over the place. In the first special he was after berries for his pies, which he escalated to all the berries in Strawberryland, and in the second he really, really wanted to win that gazebo. In the third one he wants to win the pet show for reasons, but Sour Grapes comes up with a better plan: to run Strawberry Shortcake out of town! Basically, their motivations were whatever would ruin things for Strawberry Shortcake. In the Nelvana specials, however, their motivations are always the same: to become rich and famous, though it's always Sour Grapes who is the main driver of whatever scheme they're executing. And in the last two, their schemes have nothing to do with Strawberry Shortcake at all, they just intersect because otherwise there wouldn't be a plot.
Another difference between the first three specials and the last three are how they handle the rest of the cast. The first three only gave distinct personalities to the characters who were newly introduced (and sometimes not even then, in the case of Pets on Parade), which makes sense considering how many new characters were added each time. But it is disappointing if your favorite characters happen to be from the first special, since none of them get to do anything significant in the other two specials.
Nelvana, on the other hand, only gave a couple of characters distinct personalities, but usually gave them something to do in more than one special. The rest of the cast, sadly, are rather interchangeable, with lines and actions that could be said by any of them. Again, it's understandable due to how many characters there were by then, but it's still a little frustrating.
One last note: I have only just now realized that in the last special, The Peculiar Purple Pieman didn't do his trademark song and dance! (Yatatata, etc.) Clearly the special worked just fine without it, if it took me until now to even notice, but it feels strange, especially since that was the very last time he'd have the chance.

If Disney was a Canadian company
There are some people who replied to the question to what would happen if Disney were Canadian, it would’ve most likely turned out differently due to the socioeconomic and cultural circumstances in Canada. Walt Disney himself had Canadian roots, especially through his father. The one Canadian multimedia company that I can think of that has come close to America’s Walt Disney Company is Corus Entertainment, it’s behind two kid orientated brands such as Nelvana and Kids Can Press. Even if a Canadian Walt Disney Company were to become a multimedia conglomerate, it would’ve turned out more like Corus Entertainment in many regards.
Global enough to have some outreach, but due to Canadian law it wouldn’t be as big as its American counterpart is. Tim Hortons is a successful Canadian restaurant chain, but even then it’s nowhere as big as America’s Dunkin is worsened by that the former failed to take root on American soil. One damning possibility of a Canadian Disney company is that Mickey Mouse would be kind of different, even if he were to remain a mouse as he is but because Canadian culture is kind of different so this Mickey Mouse would most likely reflect a specifically Canadian sensibility. Same thing goes for Donald Duck and because his uncle Scrooge McDuck is Scottish, so Donald’s Scottish links would be played up more.
He could easily come from Nova Scotia, which was a Scottish colony by the way. This leads to an interesting logical possibility that because Canada’s home to a French speaking province, to the point where Mickey Mouse would become the Quebecois René Rat and Minnie Mouse would be Renée Ratte/Rongeuse by then. I could even imagine how the Canadian versions of these characters would have a stronger provincial quality to them, since in the American version both Mickey and Donald seem to live in cities that occur in the US west coast. This makes me think what would happen if Marvel too was also Canadian and got bought by this Disney.
In the case with Canada, there are superhero publications. But historically most of them tend to have rather sporadic publication histories, strangely enough the longest running Canadian superhero comic story is called Angloman but tends to satirise Canadian politics a lot that even if it were possible to do Canadian superheroes, because superheroes tend to have an outlaw/vigilante quality that any Canadian take on the superhero genre would turn out differently. It becomes more blatant when it comes to Northguard and Captain Canuck, the former is even created by the same people behind Angloman so both of them do commentary on North American politics.
A Canadian Marvel, one that is bought by a Canadian Disney, would turn out rather differently too. Toronto could come close but doesn’t have the same catch as New York does, so I think there will be just as strong a provincial quality to the characters like there would be for a Canadian Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. After all in Northguard, we have the Quebecoise Fleur de Lys and again with Captain Canuck’s Kebec. Whatever rivalry Donald might’ve shared with Mickey would become a commentary on Anglophone and Francophone Canada, also Cyclops would’ve come from Nunavut and Gambit would be…Quebecois.
Admittedly I’m not sure where Spider-Man would’ve come from if he was created by Canadians, but like as I said Toronto doesn’t have the same flair as New York City does so a Canadian Spider-Man would’ve turned out differently. I feel if both Disney and Marvel were Canadian, even if their characters would seem to remain the same they’d turn out rather differently due to the way Canada ended up as.

Sometimes I wonder, what Cardcaptor Sakura: The Sealed Card would have looked like if it was dubbed by Nelvana, much like they dubbed the first movie? Would they have kept the romance between Sakura and Syaoran? If not, how would they have worked around it? They removed most hints of it from Cardcaptors but truth be told, the romance wasn’t nearly as prominent in the series as it was in the movie. It was easy to cut scenes that showed Li’s one-sided crush on Sakura and his confession to her...
But in Sealed Card, we see Sakura beginning to fall in love with Syaoran too. It’s a major plot point. She confesses her feelings to him at the end of the movie. I wonder how Nelvana would have handled that.

Weekly Anime Comics: Cardcaptor Sakura - page 34
Blah blah blah African or European blah blah blah your mother was a hamster. MONTY PYTHON QUOTES!
But seriously, these were some really weird questions for a "scavenger hunt."  Also, I kept trying to remember how on earth Nelvana tried to work around all the Japanese puns for their English translation... only to realize this was one of the episodes they just skipped completely. Yeah, that's probably for the best, even if that IS a gutsy thing to do with the next to last episode of a season. And speaking of which, there's only one page of Cardcaptor Sakura comics left!  Don't forget to take part in the vote to pick what show I do next!  Ya'll have got until the end of the month to become patrons and place your vote.  Don't miss your chance!

Back at it again with another pokemon playthrough, this time going all the way back to gen 1 and playing yellow! I had been playing this on and off again for a few years now, but finally wrapped things up a couple months ago. Those old sprites are fascinating. Similarly, I thought it would be fun to shake up the usual team drawing doing this in the original Game Boy colors!
Team stats and general gameplay info under the cut:
"Sunnie", Pikachu, Thunderbolt - Quick Attack - Double Team - Body Slam
"Frumky", Primeape, Strength - Dig - Low Kick - Rock Slide
"Spesk", Parasect, Slash - Mega Drain - Leech Life - Spore
"Memoire", Mew, Earthquake - Metronome - Surf - Psychic
"Beast", Flareon, Fire Blast - Sand-Attack - Smog - Quick Attack
"Leece", Dewgong, Headbutt - Surf - Rest - Ice Beam
General Playthrough Notes:
Gameplay total settled at nearly 20 hours! One of the shorter ones, I'd say; though, then again, there isn't really much to do in this game aside from the gyms and Team Rocket stuff.
We went in to the E4 with the whole team at level 45! Something that didn't go well in my old LeafGreen playthrough, but was perfectly fine here. The E4 wasn't that bad at all, honestly.
Kanto is not nearly good enough to deserve all the times I've played through it. I am so tired of Kanto and I'm not even done with it yet (I'm midway through a SoulSilver randomized apocalocke which, of course, has Kanto in the postgame, and I'm doing another LeafGreen run for some reason).
Okay okay so look you can see the mew on my team, I thought it'd be fun to have a mew! I missed the spots you're ideally supposed to perform the glitch in. I had just finished Cerulean City and then realized that the trainers I needed for the glitch were in that city! And I had already beaten them! I ended up using a dugtrio in diglett cave instead. It wasn't very consistent, took me a few tries, but eventually I got it.
Fun fact! At one point I was going to do a yellow nuzlocke! I ended up getting bored and realized I just wanted to play through yellow regularly, so here we are. In that run I caught Frumky though, which is actually what won me over enough to want to use her again in my actual yellow playthrough. It was actually that save where I traded with myself to get an alakazam back in my gold playthrough.
Gen 1 is so funny with how broken it is. I got so much joy in describing to my roommate all the fucked up things that were happening in-game.
Hey. Come here. Listen closely: I don't think parasect is as bad as everyone says it is. Even with the multiple x4 weaknesses in gen 1. Spesk was the mvp in a lot of fights, they packed a punch. Lovely little critter.
...Wish I could speak high praises for gen 1 flareon though. I enjoyed using Beast! But they really just don't get access to a lot of good moves. Beast had their moments, but ultimately didn't get as much screen time as I had hoped.
Similarly, dewgong? Not as good as I hoped. It really isn't quite as beefy as I had in mind. Poor thing. Again, still had fun with them on the team!
Having pikachu following me around and checking in with them whenever will never not be cute. We've been robbed of quality following pokemon in the modern games.

Cartoons of the Great White North: The Backyardigans
Welcome back to Cartoons of the Great White North. We got a big one today.
The Backyardigans is a Canadian-American cartoon produced by Nickelodeon and Nelvana. It aired from 2004 to 2010.
General Plot: The show stars five animal kids who go on fantasy adventures in their backyard. Each episode has four songs related to the theme.
That sounds simple when written out, but like Grossology, they go above and beyond with this concept and give us amazing plots. I ask of you what other show out there will give you episodes about a diner in outer space, or a monster mash birthday.
Characters: The show has five main characters; main protagonist Uniqua, secondary protagonist Pablo, tritagonist Tyrone, and deuteragonists Tasha and Austin.
Uniqua is energetic and spunky; a great match for a fantasy show with lots of imagination. Pablo and Tyrone are a great duo, as well as hilarious on their own. Tasha can be bratty sometimes, but her sweet side often far outshines her bad side. Austin is such a sweetheart, and doesn’t get the screentime he deserved.
Animation: In the very early episodes, the animation was rather wonky, as to be expected from a 3D show in the early 2000s. However, the colours are vibrant, the costumes are great, and things improve as the shows go on. One interesting thing to note is that this show uses motion capture for the dance moves, which creates a beautiful effect not seen in many other shows.
Voice Acting: This show uses almost exclusively child actors, all of which give a fantastic performance. The speaking actors give a lot of life to their characters, and the singing actors make the songs even better. Particularly impressive is Jonah Bobo as Austin (speaking), who was only seven years old when the show premiered and still gave a great performance.
Overall Verdict: The Backyardigans is among the best shows that Nick Jr has ever produced. It’s creative, well-animated, and all around fun.
General Plot: 9/10
Characters: 7/10
Animation: 9/10
Voice Acting: 8/10
Final Score: 33/40 (Great)

Hello From Care Bears (DiC) to Unlock the Magic. What series is your favorite the most? you will be categorized if you do 😁
I would say that I love ALL of the CB series.
I discovered the Nelvana series back on VHS when the 2002 Care Bears reboot was underway and Cheer Bear, my first CB plush, came with a VHS tape that contained two episodes of the series, The Gift of Caring and Bedtime For Care-a-Lot. I watched theses all the time when I was little and I still watch them to this very day ever since I saw they were uploaded along with othe classic episodes of this series on the CB YouTube channel.
Adventures in Care-a-Lot...I have a BUNCH of nostalgia with this series!
I actually remember one Christmas of 2007, I received my first AiCaL plush of Oopsy. Oopsy was one of my favorite Care Bears in the show but I did like all the other bears as well as the evil villain in the show, Grizzle and his adorable sidekick, Mr. Beaks. Speaking of Oopsy, I even had a Christmas book about him and it came with a mini plush of him wearing a Santa hat and holding a plush stocking. But anyway back to the series, I loved watching it every morning when I would wake up on the weekends.
But I do have a soft spot in my heart for the DiC series because I had a box set that contained all the episodes, I watched them all time while also recreating them with my 2002 CB figures. Welcome To Care-a-Lot was also an adorable series I watched when I was 12 years old. I loved it as well.
Unlock the Magic is a cute show too. I actually checked out one episode that Funshine Bear was doing impressions and I LOVED IT! It was really funny. Also, Cheer, Funshine, Wish and Bedtime are all my favorite CB!

13 Month update:  Back in business!
Well, I know for me, I SUPER enjoyed my month of reflection.  For me, it was incredibly satisfying to look back on all of the memories and things I’ve experienced on my blog. I know some of you may have gotten tired of all of my re-blogs and old posts, so I thank you for bearing with me and humoring me as I dove into my month of self-indulgence.  But it was something I needed to do, and I hope at least some people got some enjoyment out of it as well. But now that I’ve completed it, I’m ready to move on into year 2!  To be honest, I don’t think there’s any way it can be as good as year one.  But I’m hoping to continue to come up with posts that I and others enjoy. As I mentioned at the beginning of August, one change I’m making going forward is that I will only be making a new post every other day instead of every day now.  That tremendously lowers the work and pressure on myself and will allow me to sustain a pace that works for me over the next year. However, I will continue to answer asks more frequently than that, and I will still reblog things whenever I have a desire to.  I will alson continue to take requests. Speaking of which, I’m behind on answering asks and I have a request that I’ve been putting off, so I will be getting to those soon!  Hopefully over the next week or so. In other news, there’s a slim chance Boomerang may put up some new UtM eps.  We also continue to get Unlock the Music videos every Tuesday, and we should until probalby the end of the year.  In addition, the Care Bears youtube channel has been posting clips of some of the “new” episodes on Saturdays, so that’s cool. So yeah, even though it will be every other day, I will be making new posts again!  I have about 50 in my queue and plenty of ideas for more.  I have a lot of Nelvana ideas, I’ll have some posts of the Unlock the Music eps, and I have plenty more Incorrect Quotes ideas. And, to cap it all off, the streams continue to go well and I think we can ride it out at least until the end of the year. That’s a whole lot to be happy about.  Thanks again everyone for continuing to be here to support my blog.  I’m so happy that we all can continue to enjoy our love of Care Bears together. As always, remember.....keep caring!

Thomas In Name Only
Okay, you know how I posted a thing yesterday talking about “Season 25″ of TTTE?
It got worse.
I have the Sodor Island Fansite article here. Please read through it as many times as you need for comprehension and take a short break to keep from destroying your electronic device before returning to this rant.
https://thesifblog.blogspot.com/2020/11/thomas-2021-what-to-expect.html
Is everyone cool now? Good. Let’s talk about this. Even if you don’t want to read the rant under the handy “Keep Reading,” please reblog this post and share this article with every fan of the show you are in contact with. With what was revealed, it is almost guaranteed that Thomas will not see 100 if something doesn’t change for the better and soon.
Apologies for the length of the following rant, but I think this all needs to be addressed. If you make it through, I encourage you to reblog and add anything I missed. From what I’ve seen, the man who spoke doesn’t know anything about Thomas or what makes it tick.
To set the stage, this was a conference call arranged to talk about the new series. This was in the form of an interview with a Mr. Campbell Bryer, who will be one of the show’s directors on Nelvana’s side. While we did not get any new visuals, we got a mountain of information. And, once I read through it, I was glad we didn’t get any visuals.
First off, let’s make the tone of the show clear. This is a reboot, plain and simple. The stories will be more about the engines playing than doing their jobs. There will be little to no railway realism whatsoever, even less than the recent seasons have been showing. From what I am understanding, the engines will have little to no responsibilities and will be free to do whatever they choose.
I also want to mention how much of the heritage they are intentionally stripping away. As we all know, Sodor is located off the coast of England, Barrow-in-Furness specifically. However, in this new iteration of the show, Sodor’s location will not be mentioned, and characters who speak will likely not have an English accent. This is a grave insult to the history of this series, which started in England. EVERYTHING about Sodor and its history has been incorporated into British history. Even the name “Sodor” comes from a British bishop!
Not only does this remove the history, but it also cuts off an essential aspect of the engines themselves. A lot of the original and most popular engines are BRITISH locomotives. As an example, Gordon is an A0, the prototype to the A 1/3. His only surviving sibling, Flying Scotsman, was the first engine recorded at 100 mph. To strip the island’s location is to deny the heritage of the characters we know and love.
While we’re on the subject of characters, the line up of characters is looking likely to change. The article mentions that we are likely to see more focus on the childlike characters, like Thomas and Percy, and even less focus than currently on older, more mature engines. Who does this rule out? I can think of three engines on the standard gauge lines right now.
Edward - Edward is the classic example of the mentor character. In most of the stories and episodes he is featured in, he approaches things with a level head and a fair bit of logic. He will likely completely disappear.
Duck - Duck typically thinks things through logically, like Edward, though he gets into more scrapes than the blue tender engine. It’s safe to say that Duck will be relegated to cameo appearances if he doesn’t disappear altogether.
Henry - Henry’s been on thin ice for a while now. While he’s not typically portrayed as wise, he could be considered the more level headed of the Tender Trio of Henry, Gordon, and James. With this, Henry has a real chance of never being seen again.
With this revelation, I have to wonder about the Skarloey Railway’s fate, where many of the engines are more on the mature side. I have a feeling that any railway that is not standard gauge will also disappear.
This brings us to another aspect of Sundrian life. What about the humans? The short answer is that they will become nonexistent. To start, the engines will be moving without any assistance of crews. This completely removes an aspect that has been seen throughout the show’s run, even if the existence of an engine’s crew was downplayed in certain eras. In general, humans will not have a forward role, meaning we also lose out on essential functions such as stationmaster, guard, and signalman.
The only exception is, of course, Sir Topham Hatt. As we currently know him, he is the leader of the railway and a father figure to the engines on Sodor, doling out praise and punishment as needed. However, in this new series, Sir Topham Hatt is relegated to the role of a joke, despite supposedly still being in charge. The article describes him as “really flustered and all over the place,” nothing like what we would expect.
With the mature engines leaving and Sir Topham Hatt reduced to an idiot, who will take charge of the engines and fill in a father figure’s role? Well, that would fall to Gordon, of course!
No, I’m serious. Stop laughing.
Gordon will be the father figure the other engines look up to. Gordon, the bully. Gordon, the snob. Gordon, the engine with one of the shortest fuses. Gordon, the engine that refuses to do work outside of what he prefers. Gordon, the engine who is known to harass engines (namely Henry) who are having problems. Gordon, an engine who is not known for being a role model, will be the father figure in this reboot.
One of the most significant causes of controversy in the latest few seasons of the show was the engines’ movement. While this was disorienting, the article promises that it will look tame compared to the reboot. We have been promised that not only will the engines twist and move similar to how they currently do, but those movements will be even more exaggerated than before. The engines will also be able to jump. Yes, you heard that right. Ant this is not described as small hops, no. The article mentions explicitly the engines turning while jumping. The only minuscule relief is the promise that the engines will not “use [their] wheels as hands.”
While those are the primary concerns, there’s more stake here. To start, this reboot will not have a narrator. Thomas’s stories began as bedtime stories to children and have had a storyteller in some shape or form throughout the show’s run. The series will also lean heavily on action and fun to convey stories, instead of the more action-and-consequence type of storytelling we see in the Railway Series and early seasons.
Probably the thing that is the most unforgivable to me is that they think this monstrosity will appeal to a “broader audience.” They say this as if older fans of the show haven’t been telling them for years what has or hasn’t been working well. We have posted and shared our concerns and they have either tossed them aside or did not take them into serious consideration. This is the worst I have ever seen Thomas, and this is saying something, considering the engines bouncing in the last couple of seasons made me feel PHYSICALLY ILL.
We can’t let this continue. If you have any method of contacting Mattel, utilize it. If you know someone who works at Mattel or Nelvana who might have any say in this, talk to them. Don’t directly attack, but bring up your concerns in a calm, rational manner and be willing to listen. If this new format does make it to air, don’t watch it, don’t buy any merchandise, and don’t go to Day Out With Thomas so Mattel can see just how much we are displeased with them. If this is the end for Thomas and the North Western Railway, we can at least say that we did just about everything we could.
And not only are we losing a beloved franchise, but we may also lose rail travel as we know it. I can’t speak for everyone, but I can easily look back and say that Thomas was my gateway into a lifelong love of rail transportation, especially steam engines. A lot of heritage railways rely on the Day Out With Thomas events to bring in visitors. If this franchise fails, they will eventually lose out on a significant amount of revenue. This will likely significantly hurt them and, while railways like Strasburg in Pennsylvania might be able to handle it, others may be forced to close down.
All I can say now is that it saddens me to see what has happened to the show that started a lifelong love of rail travel. I have to wonder what the Awdrys and Britt Alcroft have to say about this...

I genuinely want to know what happened to the budget that they had after season 1. Like Bakugan was REALLY popular and made a lot of money.
Why couldn't some of it be put into the anime??? Promotion in Japan???? Seasons longer than 52 episodes????? The show actually looking like a modern day anime?(okay yes 2006 was a while ago,but GI has no excuse for how low quality it was)
Im am in no way an expert on animation but I really like MS's animation. But it was still dull and bland colour wise. Take yugioh zexal, for example, the show Is bright and colourful(and realesed around the same time as GI.)
But I also have some positives ofcourse, the 3d animation was very good to be fair(Dryoid hit different)
The bakugan were really expressive in every season past 1, in ball form. Remember that really bad drago? I do.
Also, I really want a dub of Bakutech but the likeness of that happening is next to nothing.
In conclusion, thank god for the reboot actually being C R I S P, and doing something with its budget.
Ok. I’m no expert on this, and I know nothing about Nelvana, especially about what they did with the series before it was rebooted, but, if I had to guess...
The budget was probably spent on the anime after season 1. The bakugan had CGI models and were no longer drawn as blobs, and the other characters, especially Shun, had consistent designs (I’d like for everyone to look the boy up and see his reference sheet; his hairstyle was never consistent, except for in the VG, where he had a model.)
This is a personal thing, but I vastly prefer the legacy art style to the reboot art style. I also vastly prefer organic beings with flesh and keratin feathers, to organic beings that look like robots.
The aesthetics in the reboot aren’t great. They look... how to put it... it doesn’t have much bite? It appears like it’s supposed to look cute and cool at the same time, and misses both marks, to me. They look squishy; kind of like a melted chocolate bar?
I’m whole heartedly ignoring the whole Shun debacle. That could’ve been solved by not calling him Shun Kazami, or having a different character who actually emulated legacy Shun, but eh... I like both versions of the boy, I just wish that they weren’t the same character in name.
I think the quality in Legacy came down to Dan’s plot armour, and power scaling. Drago especially threw a wrench into that, and then there was Farbros’ 4600gs. Power scaling really stung the series, even if most bakugan literally explode if they exceed 1000gs by too much. Naga. We saw Naga explode because he got too powerful for himself to handle.
(I don’t know what the specific number would be/is? Whatever, if a bakugan is too powerful, its body literally explodes because it can’t hold the power it has efficiently enough. It’s the only defence the series internally had against power scaling, that is until we get into lore mechanics that override that defence, like the mechtagon, and “ultimate” bakugan in general. Not to forget the Descendants; Dharak and Dragonoid. They can infinitely evolve because they’re descended from Eve’s first bakuga-- ugh... it’s messy and was unnecessary.)
While the stories of neither are nothing to write home about (none of us like to see MS as canon, and for good reason), I find Legacy to be better.
Speaking of BakuTech and dubs/adaptions... I’m surprised that there were no attempts to make an anime adaption/special based on the VGs, especially given that the first VG was actually written by the show writers.
Or, and while I’d prefer not to mention it, but it was only ever in manga form, The Evo Tournament. I’ve heard it’s a little fanfictiony (obviously; it wasn’t written by the show writers? I believe the “fanfictiony” comment was to do with fanfic that was written when Legacy was still going. Wattpad is a goldmine for this, if anyone is curious about the quality bar for Legacy contemporary fanfics.)
The main point of contention for the Evo Tournament is characters being out of character (mostly in lieu of Shun), and the protagonist, Katie Lowery, being Y/N-like. She’s childhood friends with Shun, if that tells you anything (if it does, then it should tell you that all the battle brawlers are Y/Ns! They’re all childhood friends with him!)
Bringing this back to the question. While the reboot is doing damn good for the TCG, the anime is not great, to me at least, even if it’s doing things with the budget. Doing things with the budget doesn’t always equal quality, even if it usually does.
