Hera as nurse, mother and employer of monsters
Hera is connected with quite a few monsters in Greek mythology, especially with serpents and serpentine creatures. This aspect of her doesn't seem to get much attention, but it is certainly interesting.
She was nurse to the Lernaean Hydra, the many-headed, venomous water snake which Herakles had to subdue: "Her [Echidna's] third child was the loathsome Hydra of Lerna, and she was nurtured by white-armed Hera whose wrath at mighty Herakles was implacable." (Hesiod, Theogony)
She raised the Nemean Lion, apparently for no reason other than causing trouble for mortals: "the Lion of Nemea, who was reared by Hera, the glorious wife of Zeus, and settled on the hills of Nemea as a scourge to mankind." (Hesiod, Theogony)
She gave birth to Typhon, father of most monsters, in an attempt to produce a child more powerful than Zeus: "And once from golden-throned Hera she received and reared dreadful and baneful Typhaon, a scourge to mortals. Hera gave birth to him in anger at father Zeus, when the son of Kronos gave birth to glorious Athena from his head;" (Homeric Hymn 3. To Apollon)
Hera sent the Sphinx to terrorise the Thebans: "While he [Kreon] was king, quite a scourge held Thebes in suppression, for Hera sent upon them the Sphinx, whose parents were Echidna and Typhon. (Apollodoros, Bibliotheke)
She appointed the hundred-headed serpent son of Typhon as guardian over her tree of golden apples: "This is the large serpent, the one that lies between the two Bears. They say that it is the one that guarded the golden apples and was killed by Heracles; it was placed among the constellations by Hera, who had appointed it to guard the apples in the land of the Hesperides. For according to Pherecydes, ... because the daughters of Atlas constantly stole the fruit, she stationed this enormous snake there as a guard." (Hyginus, Astronomy)
She sent two serpents to attack Herakles: "... then sent the wily Hera two dire monsters of serpents, bridling and bristling and with azure coils, to go upon the broad threshold of the hollow doorway of the house, with intent they should devour the child Heracles." (Theokritos, Idyll 24).

The Nemean Lion, a mythical Ancient Greek monster with an impenetrable hide and claws that could tear apart armor. It was defeated by Heracles as his first labor. Heracles, quickly realizing his weapons were useless, wrestled the lion, using his bare hands to unalive it, then using it's impenetrable hide as a protective cloak while continuing his next labors

Thought I'd draw out a reference for Alex's lion form, this won't appear in the story anytime soon, this is totally different to her normal lion form.
Tumblr media
This form only appears in very bad circumstances, where the Nemean Lion itself will surface and she will lose control. While in this state Alex will use huge amounts of stamina, to the point that it can put her life in danger.
At this point Alex is actually completely unaware of it's existence.
As to what triggers this transformation that's spoilers.

Cats have long played a significant role in superstition and folklore around the world. At times they have been said to be bad luck, in collusion with witches, and even (mistakenly) believed to have been worshipped as gods. While Ancient Egyptians did not actually worship cats as gods, they were considered sacred due to their connection to the gods, in particular the goddess Bastet. Compared to some of humanities other domesticated companions, such as dogs or horses, cats were only domesticated within the last 10,000 years (dogs, for comparison, being domesticated approximately 23,000 years ago), but despite their relatively recent addition to our households, cats have still gained a firm place in both our homes, and our myths...

My favourite Nemean Lion origin is where the Titan Goddess of the Moon, Selene, raised the Nemean Lion then gave him to Hera.
I just imagine Zeus being his Zeusy self, poor Hera having to deal with it all and being so stressed. Selene sees her friend is having a hard time, so she just “Here’s a golden kitty to keep you company”  Hera gets a bit worried “Oh no, I can’t let a creature like that in my home, little Ares leaves his weapons everywhere, I wouldn’t want it to get hurt”  “Nah girl, my little baby here is invulnerable, he’ll be fine. All he needs is some love and affection <3 also keep him off the curtains, his claws are sharp asf”
No wonder Hera hated Herakles so much, he kills her cat. Fortunately she loved the kitten so much she places him amongst the stars
The Nemean Lion’s parents are up for debate, but whether or not Selene is it’s mother she’s usually the one giving Hera the lion. Although I do prefer Selene being the mother, because that means the Nemean Lion is basically a God and I just love that idea.
